Ep 275 Start With Your Inadequacy—Overcoming Barriers to Hospitality with Dr. Janice Brown

Make It Count: Living a Legacy Life

Do you feel inadequate regarding doing hospitality? That's the best way to feel! I know I talk a lot about hospitality and if you've been around awhile, you know why I do.  It's not the same as entertaining. Do you understand the difference enough to go ahead and open your home, for heaven's sake? Today we have Dr.Janice Brown to talk about rethinking Biblical hospitality.   Dr. Brown is a specialist in the work of C. S. Lewis and Dorothy L. Sayers. And she's taught on the college level as well as High School English, some of the time for missionary kids in Papau New Guinea with Wycliffe Bible Translators. She's a wife of 56 years, mother of 3 and grandmother of 6. Origninally from Newfoundland, she currently resides in Pennsylvania.  Some gems from our conversation: We are more like God when we invite in our creativity, whether it's something physical we make as  in making dinner or in making someone feel loved and seen as God loves and sees us. Hospitality is to invite someone in—but in a wider, deeper sense, it's to give of yourself, your space, your focus, your concern and your attention. When we do hospitality, God uses us, the host, in a grand and simple way to provide stability for someone who hasn't had that resource growing up.  God uses what we have and makes that enough. There's a preciousness in the idea that out of our poverty or sense of inadequacy that God uses us.  Poverty fosters generosity of spirit and motivates us to share more. We honor others' individuality by inviting them into our homes even when it feels hard to "put up" with what we feel is strange or uncomfortable.  The meal is the vehicle to engage with others and foster intimacy.  Follow Dr. Brown on her writer's page on Facebook under Janice Hudson Brown. In this compelling fourth lecture of the series, Acharya das reframes well-being through the lens of timeless wisdom, drawing from sources like the Bhagavad Gita to reveal a powerful three-dimensional model: body, mind, and the often-overlooked spiritual self. With precision and clarity, the talk exposes a universal truth—no amount of success, relationships, or material gain can resolve the subtle but persistent sense of emptiness that many experience. This is not a personal failure or circumstantial issue; it is a signal pointing toward something deeper. The Bhagavad- gītā verse quoted in this talk:In this world, there is nothing so sublime and pure as transcendental knowledge. Such knowledge is the mature fruit of all mysticism. And one who has achieved this enjoys the self within himself in due course of time. - Bhagavad-gītā 4.38Such a liberated person is not attracted to material sense pleasure or external objects but is always in trance, enjoying the pleasure within. In this way the self-realized person enjoys unlimited happiness, for he concentrates on the Supreme. - Bhagavad-gītā 5.21One whose happiness is within, who is active within, who rejoices within and is illumined within, is actually the perfect mystic. He is liberated in the Supreme, and ultimately he attains the Supreme. - Bhagavad-gītā 5.24Chapters00:00:00 Introduction and Three-Dimensional Well-being Paradigm ‎ 00:02:22 The Universal Experience of Emptiness and Advertising Manipulation ‎ 00:04:38 Personal Counseling Example: Fear of Being Alone ‎ 00:06:44 Behavioral Patterns of Avoiding Emptiness ‎ 00:08:38 Life Clutter and Hidden Loneliness‎ 00:11:19 Emptiness as Spiritual Protection and Indication ‎ 00:13:18 Material Wealth and Relationship Status Don't Eliminate Emptiness ‎ 00:15:01 The Inadequacy of the Material World ‎ 00:16:37 A Woman's Honest Blog About Emptiness ‎ 00:23:47 Attraction to Beauty, Happiness, and Love ‎ 00:27:00 The Ice Cream Sundae Metaphor ‎ 00:28:52 Spiritual Malnourishment and the Fish Out of Water Metaphor ‎ 00:30:31 The Inward Journey and Purpose of Human Life ‎ 00:33:07 Bhagavad Gita Verses on Transcendental Knowledge ‎ 00:35:56 Liberation Through Spiritual Understanding ‎ 00:37:59 The Self-Realized Person's Experience ‎ 00:39:30 The Perfect Mystic and Spiritual Attainment ‎ 00:41:08 Two Simple Practices: Yoga Wisdom and Meditation ‎ 00:42:16 Spiritual Sound and Its Purifying Effects ‎ 00:44:15 The Signal of Inner Longing ‎ 00:45:41 The Futility of Material Investment ‎ 00:46:55 Invitation to Kirtan Practice ‎

Why One Part of Work Energizes You (and Another Drains You) Have you ever crushed one part of your job and completely dreaded another? Felt energized by a project one day, then wiped out by a different one the next? And then wondered what's wrong with you? Here's what most high-achieving professionals don't realize: That uneven energy isn't random. It's a signal. So many successful people aren't unhappy because they're failing. They're unhappy because they've normalized tolerating work that doesn't match how they're actually wired to thrive. And over time, that looks like burnout, anxiety, a loss of confidence, or wondering why the success you worked so hard for doesn't feel the way you thought it would. In this episode, Blake explores why stress is often friction, not failure, and what it really means when work feels harder than it should. She explains why being adaptable can quietly become self-abandonment, and the personal story from her Stitch Fix days that changed how she understood misalignment for good.   Episode Highlights Why Work Drains You: It Isn't Always About Workload  [00:45] – Tolerating misalignment looks like burnout, frustration & numbness  [02:10] – What the Kolbe assessment reveals about how you naturally solve problems  [03:30] – When adaptability becomes self-abandonment   The Hidden Cost of Being Highly Capable  [04:55] – Why capable people get handed more and carry it silently  [06:20] – How performing well can hide the real cost of misalignment  [07:40] – The Stitch Fix story: same title, completely different energy   Misalignment vs. Inadequacy  [09:00] – "It felt like a fish trying to climb a tree" and what that actually means  [10:15] – Why "I should be able to do this" is often the wrong question  [11:30] – How understanding your Unique Fingerprint for Success™ changes everything   Strategic Realignment (Without Blowing Up Your Life)  [12:20] – You don't have to quit- you need alignment, not a reset  [13:10] – Clients see meaningful shifts in 4–6 weeks  [14:00] – In alignment, you're two to three times more effective   Powerful Quotes "Adaptability without self-awareness very often becomes self-abandonment." — Blake Schofield "I thought the stress meant something was wrong with me. But it didn't. It meant there was a mismatch — misalignment, not inadequacy." — Blake Schofield "The people who will continue to thrive are not the ones trying to be everything to everyone. It will be the people who deeply understand how they create their highest value." — Blake Schofield   Resources Mentioned Let's explore what's possible for your team: If your company is investing in burnout, wellness or adaptability initiatives, but seeing rising burnout, disengagement, or retention risk, it may be time to address the root cause. Daily Devotional By Archbishop Foley Beach

Life Beyond This One! MESSAGE SUMMARY: Today, we delve into the profound mystery of the Holy Spirit and its vital role in our Christian walk. We're reminded that it's not just about having the Holy Spirit, but allowing the Spirit to have us - to lead and guide our lives. The message emphasizes three key sins against the Holy Spirit: grieving, quenching, and blaspheming. When we choose bitterness over love, or hold onto unforgiveness, we grieve the Spirit. Every time we sin, we quench the Spirit's flow in our lives. Yet, there's hope in confession, which reopens the floodgates of the Spirit's presence. This teaching challenges us to examine our hearts: Are we truly yielding to the Spirit's guidance? Are we living holy lives that honor God? It's a call to deeper surrender and a reminder of our constant need for the Spirit's empowering presence in our faith journey.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love. In Jesus' name, amen.    Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 132). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. Dr. Allan Moseley delivered a message from Exodus 3 and 4 focusing on God's call of Moses and how it demonstrates that God can use us in His redemption plan when we obey Him. The sermon centered on two major truths: first, that God sees our suffering and has a plan to rescue us, as evidenced by God's declaration in Exodus 3:7-8 that He had seen the affliction of His people in Egypt and had come down to deliver them. Second, God overcomes our inadequacies to use us for His good purpose, despite our feelings of unworthiness or inability. Dr. Moseley systematically examined Moses' six objections to God's call: "Who am I?" (feeling unqualified), not knowing God well enough, fear that people wouldn't believe him, inability to speak well, wanting God to send someone else, and concern for his family. To each excuse, God provided patient answers and assurance of His presence and power. Dr. Moseley emphasized that God delights in choosing unlikely people—shepherds, fishermen, teenagers from small towns—to accomplish His greatest work, so that no human being might boast in God's presence (1 Corinthians 1). The message concluded by contrasting Moses as an imperfect human deliverer with Jesus as the perfect, eternal deliverer who came not just to redeem Israel, but to be "the Savior of the world" (1 John 4:14).   WE'D LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU! The Gate of Inadequacy explores Matthew 16:13–18 and Jesus' declaration that the gates of hell will not prevail against His Church. Gates are defensive, not offensive—meaning hell is on defense and the Church is advancing. Yet many believers live held back by insecurity and feelings of not being enough. This message unpacks how inadequacy is not a disqualification but often God's starting point. Through the lives of Moses, Gideon, Jeremiah, and Paul, we see that weakness becomes the platform for God's power. Instead of comparing ourselves to others or waiting until we feel qualified, Scripture reminds us that our sufficiency comes from Christ alone (2 Corinthians 3:5, John 15:5). Inadequacy doesn't cancel your calling—it drives you into deeper dependence on God. When we surrender our insecurity at the foot of the cross, we discover that God uses surrendered, available people to advance His kingdom.

God Is Your Heavenly Father; and You Can Speak to Him, in Prayer, as if He Were Your Earthly Father MESSAGE SUMMARY: God is your Heavenly Father and the Creator of the Universe; however, you can talk to Him as your father, and remember that He loves you. Imagine climbing up into His lap and imagine Him wrapping His arms around you – He is God your loving father. As God tells you in 2 Samuel 7:14-15: “I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you.". You need to start talking to God as the best dad there could ever be. Talk to Him about your life; your concerns; and your needs. You need to ask God for His counsel, and you need to ask Him questions regarding His will for your life.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, you know how difficult it is for me to be in silence before you. At times it feels almost impossible, given the demands, distractions, and noise all around me. I invite you to lead me to a quiet, silent place before you — to a place where I can hear you as Elijah did. In Jesus' name, amen.     Scazzero, Peter. 2026-01-23 | UPDATES #111 | Zelensky blasts Europe's inaction, in a fiery speech at Davos, as Russia “weaponizes winter” cutting power, light and heat to millions of Ukrainians, in the depth of the worst winter the country has seen in decades. Has the enemy's “energy genocide” broken his diplomatic posture? Is he justified in calling out the hubris, complacency and lack of urgency amongst Ukraine's allies – inaction that is contributing to Ukraine ‘bleeding out' on the home front and the front lines, in a way that is entirely preventable? In this episode, we ask if there is any difference in terms of substance between Vance who screamed to Zelenskyy's face, in the Oval Office, about not showing gratitude and being disrespectful, and between the European diplomats, analysts and journalists, that say the same, but in muted tones and behind Ukraine's back. How are the discrete murmurings of disapproval from certain quarters in Europe, hinting at Zelenskys's inappropriate tone, and unseemly directness, really difference from what Vance said, in terms of substance? Those same diplomats and politicians will say there is all the difference in the world – but it's rank hypocrisy and hubris, revealing a lack of imagination and leadership. Because these are the same sentiments, that same self-righteous wounded pride on display, the same manipulations of narratives and sentiments, designed to reinforce the idea that Ukraine is a second-tier ally, and how dare they speak out at our generosity that enables them to bleed on, but not win, stay in the fight to keep the Russian horde from our doorstep, but not to achieve victory. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: Reuters — Davos: Quotes from Zelensky's speech criticising Europe (Jan 22, 2026). Today's Fear-Laden Events and “Noise” Will Not Matter If You Practice the Presence of God as You Live Your Life MESSAGE SUMMARY: You cannot practice the presence of God when you practice the presence of fear. You may be inclined to fear for the future of our country or fear about your personal finances or family or health issues. If you practice the presence of God, you will have peace in amidst your life-storm and trauma. The “Presence of Jesus” in your life begins with persistent prayer to the end that you constantly and consistently seek to include Jesus, through the Holy Spirit, in all aspects of your life. “Practicing the Presence of Jesus” in your life will prove to be life changing a rewarding. Jesus provides comfort for your anxieties in Mathew 6:33-34: “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.". Also, in Mathew 11:28-30, Jesus makes it clear to you that He wants to walk with you in your times of trouble and fear so that you can offload to Him, the Creator of the Universe, some of those issues that drive your fears: “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.". If you practice the presence of God, it will not matter what this world or the devil throws your way.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, everything in me resists following you into the garden of Gethsemane to fall on my face to the ground before you. Grant me the courage to follow you all the way to the cross, whatever that might mean for my life. And then, by your grace, lead me to resurrection life and power. As we kick off 2026, we're diving into the Old Testament story of the Exodus, which reveals God's overwhelming desire to set His people free. God not only wants to set us free; He desires to see us live free.

Here You Are in Your Sins Without One Plea for Innocence; Would You Rather Plea for God's Justice or Mercy? MESSAGE SUMMARY:  We do not deserve it; but we are able to come to God, in a Personal Relationship with Him, to plea for His Mercy. We are all sinners. As Paul tells us in Romans 9:18: “So then he has mercy on whomever he wills, and he hardens whomever he wills.". With God's Justice without His Mercy and His resulting Grace, you would face only eternal death as Justice for your sins. We can never enter God's presence for prayer when we are in our pride with our focus on ourselves. Also, Paul reminds us, in 1 Corinthians 1:30-31, that, in your Salvation through God's Grace, Jesus makes us “boast” only in the Grace provided us by God: “And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, so that, as it is written, ‘Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.'”. We can only enter God's presence when we humble ourselves in Jesus. Humility and penitence before God invite His presence – here I am, Lord; just as I am without one plea; have mercy on me a sinner.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Surely it is God who saves me. I will trust in Him and not be afraid. For the Lord is my stronghold and my defense, and He is my savior. Therefore, you shall draw water with rejoicing from the springs of salvation. And on that day, you shall say, “Give thanks to the Lord and call upon His Name; make His deeds known among the peoples; see that they remember that His Name is exalted.”. Amen. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Inadequacy. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Abundance. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Not all fear is the same. Some fear protects you from real danger—and if you've experienced religious trauma or spiritual abuse, those fears are legitimate. But other fear is trickier: it's the voice telling you you're not capable, not worthy, that you can't trust yourself. This sermon explores how to tell the difference between protective fear and the fear of inadequacy that keeps you small.   Drawing on the stories of Mary and Jeremiah—both of whom faced genuine, life-threatening risks—Antonio offers a framework that doesn't gaslight you about danger but also doesn't let fear of your own potential win. The goal isn't moving forward fearlessly, but faithfully. Baby steps count. And yes, you can say yes while still trembling.

You Put Down the Drink, But Now You Can’t Stop Thinking About Food. Here’s Why. If you’ve traded your nightly wine for nightly ice cream binges, you’re not alone. And no, it’s not just about willpower or “getting your act together.” In this episode, I sit down with Ali Shapiro, creator of the Truce with Food methodology, to unpack the real reasons we turn to food and sugar in recovery—and it goes way deeper than you think. Ali shares her personal journey from childhood cancer and pesticide exposure to developing a complicated relationship with food that mirrored so many of the patterns we see in addiction. We dive into the difference between food addiction and disordered eating, why belonging (not hunger) drives most of our food choices, and the four emotional triggers that send us straight to the pantry. This conversation will change how you think about food forever. We talk about the TAIL framework (Tiredness, Anxiety, Inadequacy, Loneliness), why protein is your secret weapon against sugar cravings, and how self-trust—not perfection—is the real foundation of recovery from any substance. If you’ve ever felt crazy around food, ashamed of your eating habits, or wondered why you can’t just “eat normal,” this episode is for you. HERE ARE THE 3 KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE: 1️⃣ Food Isn’t the Problem—Belonging Is —  Understanding this invisible string changes everything. 2️⃣ The TAIL Framework Reveals Your True Triggers — When you can identify what job food is doing for you, you can address the real need underneath. 3️⃣ Protein Is Your Anti-Craving Superpower — It’s not about willpower—it’s about physiology. Jesus Followers Seek First God's Will, and then They “Die” to their Self-Ambitions and Self-Appetites and Take Up Their Cross MESSAGE SUMMARY: In a time in which we hear so much about self-help, self-image, and self-actualization, Jesus is saying self-denial is the way to life for Jesus Followers. Jesus tells us, in Matthew 16:24, that self-denial is a key element in following Him: “Then Jesus told his disciples, ‘If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.'". “Taking up one's cross” means to die to self-ambitions and self-appetites. When we die to our self-ambitious and self-appetites, we put them on the cross; and  Jesus' life moves through us: “Not my will but Thy will.”. By denying self, we become alive in Jesus; and His Spirit flows through us – we experience eternal life and abundant life.     TODAY'S PRAYER: Most merciful God I confess that I have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what I have done, and by what I have left undone.  I have not loved you with my whole heart; I have not loved my neighbors as myself. I am truly sorry and I humbly repent.  For the sake of your son Jesus Christ, have mercy on me and forgive me; that I might delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of Your Name. Amen.  TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Inadequacy. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Abundance. “I am the vine; you are the branches. Love Lives Here – Week 8The Fear of Inadequacy (John 15:1–5)The fear of inadequacy tells us we will never be enough to do anything that truly matters. But when Jesus says, “I am the vine; you are the branches,” His perfect love answers, “I am enough in you.” In John 15, we see that His pruning prepares our growth, His presence produces our strength, and His power bears lasting fruit. When we abide in Him and believe we are fully accepted and fully loved, we find that our adequacy comes not from our ability, but from His life at work within us.

Daily Devotional By Archbishop Foley Beach

He Was When We Were Not! MESSAGE SUMMARY: In this powerful exploration of Jesus' identity, we delve into the profound High Priestly Prayer found in John 17. This prayer reveals Jesus not just as a teacher or prophet, but as one who shares in the divine nature with God the Father. We're challenged to consider: Who is Jesus to us personally? The prayer showcases Jesus' unique relationship with the Father, calling Him 'Father' over 160 times in the Gospels. This intimacy extends to us as believers, inviting us into the very fellowship of the Trinity. As we contemplate this, we're reminded that our unity as Christians is rooted in our union with God Himself. The prayer also reveals Jesus' eternal existence and His role in creation, emphasizing His divinity. This understanding transforms how we view the cross - not as a tragedy, but as our salvation. Let's reflect on how this deeper knowledge of Jesus' nature can impact our daily walk with Him and our relationships with others.   TODAY'S PRAYER: Lord, I now take a deep breath and stop. So often I miss your hand and gifts in my life because I am preoccupied and anxious. Grant me the power to pause each day and each week to simply rest in your arms of love.
