Today, we are thrilled to welcome professional ultra trail runner and Ironman triathlete Lucy Bartholomew to the show. Lucy has talked so openly about the high highs and the low lows of doing what she is called to in this life, and yet she continually persists to, as she says, uplevel to a new devil. At age 27, Lucy is already a trail running veteran with course records, podium finishes, and many lessons along the way. Lucy has crossed the finish line at the most significant events in the sport, like the Tarawera Ultramarathon, Western States, and, most recently, Ultra Trail Du'Mont Blanc, where she placed 10th. She has also embarked on solo adventures that have taken her to the limit, like the 231 K trek along the Larapinta Trail in Australia's Northern Territory. Salomon Running created a fantastic film, Running Out, which documents this incredible feat. But the piece that caught our attention was last year when Lucy crossed the finish line at Ironman Western Australia and qualified for the Ironman World Championship, which takes place in Kona, Hawaii, in just a few weeks. Trail and triathlon, they said it couldn't happen, and now it is all the time. We love the crossover, we love what we've seen in following Lucy's story, and we're so grateful to have this beam of sunshine with us today. We hope you enjoy the show. Thank you for listening. Be sure to check out NEW PATREON tiers to support this, and the Awake Athlete podcasts; let's keep both commercial-free! In this episode, we discuss: - Finding flow again at Tarawara - UTMB and Ironman World Championship - Pinnacles of the sport side by side - Endurance sports is problem-solving with a little exercise in between - Happening "to" you or "for" you - Process and privilege of getting gritty - The honor of knocking on the pain cave door and being let - Calm, confident, curious - Outrun the love of running - When you think you know it, you don't - All gear, no idea - Biggest learning from Ironman Western Australia - Nutrition changes from ultrarunning to triathlon - Lucy's dad's experience at Western States 100 Endurance Run - Trusting intuition to fuel the body with plants - Favorite dish from her cookbook - Dahl - zero waste recipe - Resonating with professional athlete Heather Jackson - Favorite moment of UTMB Namaste- Jess

Terenzo Bozzone is one of the world’s greatest endurance athletes… with over 47 wins including 33 Ironman 70.3 and numerous ironman victories. He has 5 World Championship titles in Triathlon, duathlon, and his 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Title. It hasn’t all been smooth sailing, he’s had enormous setbacks with Achilles injuries and eventually surgeries and a frightening accident in 2018 when he was taken out by a truck on his bike. But he continues to rebound and rebuild and come back stronger and better.Never a smile off his face, you’d be hard-pressed to meet a better man. We’ve been mates for almost 20 years and raced each other for over a decade. In this episode, Terenzo describes the difficult mental, physical, and emotional journey back from an almost career and life-ending accident. He struggled with Concussion symptoms for months after the accident... headaches that would last a week at a time. He won Ironman Western Australia 5 months after the accident using the desire to show his kids the importance of never giving up even when the chips are down to empower him to victory. He discusses his hopes of going to the Olympics but missing out due to politics in sport. He regrouped and went on to win the 2008 Ironman 70.3 World Championships the same year as the Games. We discuss sleep and recovery, mountain biking, supplements, and mental strategies and so much more.

On this week’s episode Haley and Alyssa are chatting with rookie pro triathlete Ruth Astle. Ruth took her pro card last year after winning the amateur race at the 2019 Ironman World Championships. She jumped straight into the pro ranks, taking on her first race as a professional at Ironman Western Australia just a few weeks later. Ruth tells us about the lessons she took away from that race, and what she is continuing to learn as a new pro. Like the rest of the triathlon world, Ruth’s 2020 race plans were drastically changed, but she didn’t let that stop her. She tells us how she was able to readjust her plans to get to some start lines this year - which included an incredible 4-week build to prep for Ironman Florida, where she finished in an impressive 4th place, setting a new bike course record. Ruth also received an invitation to race at the PTO Championships this december in Daytona, and she tells us what it has been like training in Florida these past few weeks compared to her home in the UK. Alyssa and Haley recap some of the highlights from the Outspoken Women in Triathlon virtual awards ceremony, and dish on what 2020 fashion trends they are getting on board with. Oxygenaddict Triathlon Podcast, with Coach Rob Wilby and Helen Murray - Triathlon coaching by oxygenaddict.com

Terenzo Bozzone was in the form of his life in early 2018, winning back to back 70.3's and breaking the course record at Ironman New Zealand, and was building his training towards Kona with the podium in his sights. Tragically, he was hit by a logging truck in July while out bike training, and thoughts of racing were put on hold while he tried to heal his body.Left with severe concussion, ongoing headaches, a broken cheek bone, facial plastic surgery, a broken hand and numerous other injuries, Terenzo focused on doing what he could each day, feeling grateful for the fact he was still alive, his kids and his family. What followed was one of the most remarkable stories of coming back from life threatening injuries ever told. Entering 70.3 Western Sydney on less than two weeks of run training, just with the aim of finishing the race, he surprised everyone - himself included - by taking the win! Inspired by that, he eight days later he entered Ironman Western Australia - and took the win after an epic battle with Cam Wurf on the run. This is a fantastic story of how a positive attitude, and gratitude for what we have each day, can transform the darkest of situations.Show Sponsors:https://www.precisionhydration.com/ - Leaders in triathlete sweat testing and hydration, with multi-strength electrolytes that match how you sweat. In my first conversation with Nathan, the lasting impression he made was “man that guy knows his numbers”. He knew his metrics back to front, any question I asked about previous performance and mishaps, he could answer and identify what contributed to “X” result. This meant that our wellness consultations were more succinct, impactful and lasting while we worked together to formulate a nutrition, wellness and race nutrition & hydration plan. As a fellow data nerd, I thoroughly enjoyed todays conversation. We set out with the purpose to help share Nathan's story and how data and metrics have paved his journey from age group to professional Triathlete. Very successfully I might add. Athletic Highlights; Age Group Ironman World Champion (25-29) 2016 Ironman PB of 8:18 (Ironman New Zealand 2018) Multiple age group wins and podiums 2015 National Long Course Champion (25-29) 5th Ironman World Champs 2015 (25-29) 1st Amateur, 14th Overall and amateur course record, New Zealand 2016 2nd amateur and 38th overall, Ironman World Championships 2016 5th place pro Ironman Western Australia 2017 6th place pro Ironman New Zealand 2018 What also contributes to Nathan's success, is the changes he has made to his nutrition and metabolic efficiency along the way, while adopting an LCHF lifestyle. I have no doubt you're going to learn a lot from this one! We discuss: Nathan's journey as a successful age group Triathlete What he learnt from his 1st & 2nd age group IM that paved the way to his first Kona experience. Learning from race mistakes Utilising and document data for purpose of race planning Functional Threshold Power (FTP) and testing protocols Aerobic Decoupling & identifying limiters Intensity Factor (IF) for race planning / training Training Stress Score (TSS) and how it builds your Chronic Training Load (CTL) Acute Training Load (ATL) and Training Stress Balance (TSB) Nathan's shift to whole foods and Lower Carbohydrate Higher Fat (LCHF) lifestyle Metabolic Efficiency impact on performance and nutrition planning Show note links: Nathan Shearer Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nathanshearer/ Training Peaks Analysis Kona 2016: https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/kona-power-analysis-male-25-29-age-group-winner/ Coaching Profile: https://www.tzeromultisport.com/nathan-shearer.html

In todays Fat Black podcast Pete and I get to speak with Luke Mckenzies better half Beth Gerdes. The biggest take home from this interview with Beth would have to be her looking at the opportunities in things and having gratitude. Great lessons.  What we cover: Training through pregnancy. Managing being a new mum and training for Ironman. Support and Aunty Jackie. We talk IMWA, the race and the mental side of it. We talk fast AG men and how it affects pro women on the bike. What drives Beth. We go into Beths background as a school psychologist. The lessons. Beths biggest 'failure' ... this one is deep! And of course her greatest and proudest achievement so far.
