Join us for "Saturday Matinee" on Vintage Classic Radio as we celebrate the spooky season with a show of comedic Halloween capers. Starting with "The Abbott and Costello Show" in the episode "Night in Haunted House" where the comedic duo finds themselves embroiled in a series of spooky and hilarious hijinks in a supposedly haunted mansion. Originally broadcast on May 8th, 1947, the show stars Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, alongside supporting voice talents that bring the eerie setting to life. Following that, we dive into the "Screen Guild Theater" presentation of "Arsenic and Old Lace", a delightfully macabre tale aired on November 25th, 1946. This episode bring the dark comedy of Mortimer Brewster, who discovers his charming aunts' penchant for poisoning lonely old men as an act of charity. The cast features a lineup of stars from the original movie starring Cary Grant as Mortimer Brewster, with Peter Lorre and Josephine Hull reprising their film roles, adding to the authenticity and excitement of the radio adaptation. Concluding our Halloween lineup is "The Sealtest Variety Hour" with the episode "Happy Halloween", which originally aired on October 28th, 1948. This episode is marked by the guest appearances of Boris Karloff and Jack Carlson, adding a touch of star-powered spookiness. Karloff, known for his iconic horror roles, and Carlson bring a mix of humour and horror to the show, making for a memorable Halloween celebration. Each show captures the essence of classic radio entertainment with a spooky twist, making this Saturday's lineup a perfect homage to the spirit of vintage Halloween radio programming.

In this episode, Tom discusses his career, local politics, and the proper role of journalism. He's covered all things Davis County while managing editor of the Davis County Clipper and now Editor for The Davis Journal. Tom began his journalism career working with Senator Orrin Hatch. Of his experiences he wrote: "I met Orrin Hatch in 1976, when I was interviewing candidates campaigning for the Republican nomination to run against three-time Democratic incumbent Frank Moss. It was in July, the state convention had been held and Hatch had emerged slightly behind favorite Jack Carlson but with enough delegates to earn a spot in the September primary. Both Carlson and Hatch were making the newspaper interview circuit, including to the Daily Herald in Provo where I was a reporter. Hatch came into the newspaper along with his campaign manager, a guy named Mac Haddow. Hatch's interview with me was much different than Jack Carlson's. He looked me in the eyes when he spoke, his answers seemed more sincere and genuine. Two weeks later, Haddow called me and said, “What do you think of my boy?” I told him I was impressed. He told me Hatch was impressed by me, then asked if I had a desire to help with Hatch's campaign. It would be volunteer work – no pay and after hours – and I'd have to drive back and forth from Provo to Salt Lake City several times a week to their headquarters. Their office was in a rented house on 400 South across the street from Chuck-A-Rama (the houses were torn down years ago and a hotel now sits on the site). Being a political junkie in those days (as I still am), I jumped at the chance. So for no pay, on my own time, and simply for the experience, I worked with Orrin for the next eight weeks prior to the primary election. I accompanied him on several public appearances, helping with a few press releases from his campaign, giving him a little media coaching, etc. In turn, I did enjoy some free meals at Chuck-A-Rama and some great experiences working on a national campaign." -"Remembering Orrin Hatch and our First Meeting In Provo" by Tom Heraldson https://www.valleyjournals.com/2022/05/12/400102/remembering-orrin-hatch-and-our-first-meeting-in-provo

Over the past six years, Carlson and his team have democratised the clothes most associated with stuffy Ivy League and Oxbridge sporting institutions, giving them a new lease of life. We talk about this at length this week, as Aleks explores just how Jack has built a brand that feels fresh and inclusive as opposed to elitist and stuffy. This is Superlative: A Podcast about watches, the people behind them, and the worlds that inspire them. This week our host Ariel Adams is joined by Jack Carlson of Rowing Blazers. They start the show talking about the book “Rowing Blazers” that Jack wrote in 2014 and how that led him from the Rowing community to the Fashion Industry. They talk about the difference between blazers specifically for rowing and regular blazers, how they were originally made for rowing, (specifically one club in the beginning), and how it grew into a wide spread article of clothing. They talk about his time at Oxford studying Archeology to get his Doctorate, how Indiana Jones may have influenced that career passion, and what two ancient civilizations he focused on. They spend some time making comparisons of humans from the past to now, and some of the things humans were able to accomplish without modern technology, and how little he gets to talk about these passions in the fashion world. As they get into the clothing brand that is Rowing Blazers, they talk about their customer base, the pop-up stores that are happening, some of the struggles of entrepreneurialism, and the 3 watches that are coming out as a collaborations with Seiko. If there's such a thing as a *normal* path to founding a fashion brand, Jack Carlson didn't follow it. Before he was a designer and best-selling author, Carlson was an archaeologist who rowed at a national level. But as we discover in this dive into the fascinating and occasionally weird and tradition-bound world of rowing, there's a rich history that blurs the lines of sports, fashion, and cultural anthropology. For Carlson, research turned into a book (celebrated by none other than Mr. Ralph Lauren himself), which turned into Rowing Blazers. We talk about what the brand is, how the distinctive identity was formed, and who it's for (hint — not just rowers), as well as the joys of a good watch and what it feels like to watch TV and see Tan France wearing your blazer. Or the surprise in finding out that multi-Grammy winning rapper Macklemore, has been one of your best customers since day one! Make sure to listen to the end because there's an Easter egg in there for watch fans. This episode is made possible by our sponsor, eBay. Jack Carlson’s background is in rowing (he was so good he was on the US national team), but he’s found a new calling in gear. The self-described “streetwear omnivore” built a brand mixing the worlds of preppy style with youthful sportswear, offering everything from hardy, colorful rugby shirts to patchwork Barbour collabs and cheeky send-ups of finance bro style. This all is represented best at the Rowing Blazers flagship store in SoHo, which has been closed due to Covid-19. But now Carlson is using his brand as a platform not just to combat coronavirus through making masks from leftover fabric, but also a way to stand up against racism and acknowledge the influence Black culture has had on taking prep style to a whole new level. Stay tuned for new episodes of Vibe Check every Tuesday and Thursday.

WHA and NHL Tough Guy, Hall of Fame Referee, Cancer Survivor, Paul “Stewcat” Stewart may be the most interesting man in hockey, but he made his mark well beyond the sport -- inspiring people from all walks of life to find, in themselves, the will and the courage to achieve and survive even the most dire of circumstances. Incredibly, Paul climbed to the top of the NHL ladder twice — as a player and referee. In Episode 19 of the Pro Hockey Alumni Podcast, we focus on Paul's playing career -- an incredible journey from Zamboni Driver at Philadelphia Flyers practices to a respected enforcer in the big leagues. Paul delivers fascinating tales from his days slugging it out in the wild “Slapshot” era of minor league hockey and his eventual climb to the big leagues with the WHA Cincinnati Stingers and NHL Quebec Nordiques. What fueled Paul's unlikely drive to the top? You'll get a good idea in his stories about meeting hockey legend Eddie Shore and and heartfelt letter he received from former puglistic foe Jack Carlson. This podcast is crammed with entertaining hockey stories and life inspiration as as is Paul's new book titled “Ya Wanna Go?” which is sure to be a best seller. The book is available on his website —YaWannaGo.com, amazon.com and wherever great books are sold. This book is a must read for any hockey fan. This week's Dropcast is all about giving back. Hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas are joined by Jack Carlson, published author, actual rower, and founder of Rowing Blazers, to talk about his recent charitable collaboration with Noah clothing and Row New York. Also joining them is Ball Boyz co-host Ian Servantes—who apparently had nothing better to do. Jack talks about the best part of the collaboration—helping out underserved kids in the five boroughs of New York City. The collab is donating a portion of sales to help out Row New York, a nonprofit organization that makes the elite sport of rowing more inclusive and accessible to students from all walks of life—and goes as far as helping them get into college. We also asked Dropcast listeners to weigh in with a confession: What's the most you've ever spent on a jacket? Now that it's finally outerwear season in the Big Apple, we were expecting to hear a ton of voicemails flexing on us—and we were right. Dr. Matt Harris has uncovered that apostle Bruce R. McConkie wrote Official Declaration 2, which allowed for the first time in 120 years, open ordination of black church men, and allowed blacks access to the LDS Temple ordinances. This may seem especially ironic, given the fact that McConkie had long justified the ban through the Curse of Cain and Curse of Ham in his book, Mormon Doctrine.https://youtu.be/I7n9Ku5MzaEMatt: President Kimball knows what he is doing. He needs to get Elder McConkie's buy-in. When he gets Elder McConkie's buy-in that the ban needs to be lifted, I mean he feels that there is a tremendous weight off his shoulders. This isn't to take away of course any of the spiritual aspects of the temple and the revelation, and the things that the apostles will recount afterwards about it being the most magnificent spiritual experience of their life. I think that's all very authentic and genuine, but it just speaks to President Kimball's remarkable leadership, that I order to do this, “I've got to really work with my associates and massage them and help them to understand that this is the right thing to do." To me that is an incredible, remarkable exercise in leadership on President Kimball's part, because he doesn't want to create a schism in the Twelve like President Woodruff had under his leadership.I am sure as the church president that President Kimball could have just done something unilaterally. But if there is no buy-in, what is the point? Right? If people don't realize that this is the right thing to do, that's really one of the most remarkable things is that he gets the buy-in from Elder McConkie. Not only is there buy-in from Elder McConkie, the biggest doctrinal hardliner, but it is Elder McConkie who writes the Second Official Manifesto that will be added to the Doctrine & Covenants. That is his language. We will also discuss a candid discussion between President Kimball and an official from the Carter Administration, who expressed displeasure with the ban. Matt: Also, going on behind the scenes is President Kimball's meeting with a man named Jack Carlson. He is Ph.D. in economics from Harvard. He is a liberal Mormon democrat. He is one of the proud three in the ‘70s! {chuckles} He works in the Carter Administration. He calls Jack Carlson into his office, and just has this very candid discussion. This is in I think '76-77, somewhere in there. He calls in Jack Carlson and his wife, just the three of them: President Kimball and the Carlsons. He says, “Jack, why do the Carter people hate us so much?”He said, “President, don't you get it?“No, tell me. That's why you are here.”He said, “They hate our views on ERA, our views towards women and ERA.” This is in the midst of the ERA movement. Of course, Utah was the holdup, arguably one of the states that kills the amendment, to be honest. The church was against it, and that galvanized opposition. “The other thing is, they don't like our views towards black people.”President Kimball, without missing a beat, says, “We've got to change this policy, but I can't. I am worried. I am worried about how the saints in the South will take this policy.” It's the same thing McKay had to deal with, you remember? “I am worried about my brethren in the Twelve.” That's what he said.Matt gets into some other interesting details as well, such as Merrill Bateman's mission to Nigeria in the early 1970s. This is an interview you don't want to miss (in addition to our previous discussion of Pres Kimball!) Did you know Elder McConkie wrote Official Declaration 2?Check out our conversation….[paypal-donation]
