In this episode, Ceri talks about cultural curation with Salma Tuqan, Director of Nottingham Contemporary. From her early days at Art Dubai to influential roles at the V&A and beyond, Salma shares her views on how cultural institutions can evolve, adapt, and remain relevant in challenging times. Salma explores everything from collection strategies to institutional sustainability while highlighting the importance of collective effort and generosity in creating inclusive cultural spaces. KEY TAKEAWAYS Salma's leadership philosophy focuses on building collective effort, demonstrated through her work at Nottingham Contemporary where she leads a team of 70, prioritising collaborative decision making and community input. Throughout her career at the V&A, Salma challenged traditional museum structures by working to integrate Middle Eastern art across departments rather than isolating it, showing her commitment to breaking down institutional silos. Drawing from her Palestinian heritage and early exposure to diverse cultural practices, Salma approaches curation with an understanding that Western categorisations of art aren't universal. In her role at the Delfina Foundation, Salma developed innovative funding models for under resourced regions, creating pools of resources from multiple small contributions to support artists from areas like Central America. At Nottingham Contemporary, Salma prioritises long term artist relationships over one off exhibitions, allowing creative partnerships to evolve naturally from small collaborations to major shows. Rather than arriving with preset plans at new institutions, Salma's approach is to first listen and understand the existing ecosystem before developing strategies collaboratively. Through projects like "While We Wait," Salma demonstrates her commitment to considering the afterlife of exhibitions and ensuring local communities can access the art they inspire. As a director facing multiple contemporary challenges, Salma emphasises the importance of maintaining joy as a form of resistance while building solidarity networks with other cultural leaders. BEST MOMENTS "I'm a big believer in collectively working, and that's a big part of the ethos of my leadership style as well. I believe that things happen with people." "When we look around the world and with everything that's at stake, there's never been a moment where the role of institutions is as important as it is." "There's a lot of focus around the public facing aspect of institutions, particularly thinking about the artistic program and what does that mean when you're platforming artists who are talking about labour issues and simultaneously cutting the hours of the lowest paid workers." "I think joy is also a key form of resistance too." "The V&A is a huge entity, a huge institution, and I spent a lot of time developing relationships first and listening to people." "I really believe that the best work happens and is developed collectively." Contemporary Arab art doesn't always get the attention it deserves or needs. Alia Al-Senussi — cultural strategist and arts affairs advisor — talks to us about the power that museums hold in informing and shaping cultures, forgiving and healing from the pasts, and building resilient economies. Focussing on Saudi Arabia's cultural revolution in motion, she explains why everyone seems to be obsessed with the so-called “creative economy” and how her own relationship with art started as a tourist, delineating between modern and contemporary art. Finally, she highlights the critical role that artists and their art play as “interpreters of our time” and the difficulties of building private and public collections, and shares her “playbook” for building a successful cultural institution. For art lovers and curious minds alike, Alia also shares her favorite museums, cultural institutions and galleries, and communities from across the region as well as her favourite North African artists. Alia Al-Senussi is a cultural strategist and art world affairs advisor with nearly 20 years of experience in the field. Artist Jumper Maybach talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about his mission to be a part of the solution to help end hate, bullying and intolerance globally. Jumper believes that a person's trauma defines the individual. Maybach's journey came to a head in 2010 after suffering decades of emotional abuse and being marginalized for his sexual orientation. He found himself on the brink of an emotional precipice which was instrumental and vital to his healing process by releasing his pain as well as his joy into his artwork. The art is a constant evolution of color and complete abandonment of the paint. The complexity of the abstract style comes from deep within. Jumper is unashamed to teach the world a lesson in compassion. His art is a beacon for ending hate, bullying and intolerance in the world. Maybach's art is about turning darkness into light. Not long after Jumper began his career as an artist he started to receive national and international recognition for his work. In 2013 Jumper held his first gallery show which ultimately led to an invite to attend Art Dubai 2013 as a VIP guest. Jumper exhibited in Dubai, UAE in 2015 and in 2017 at the prestigious Alliance Française. It was there that he received a documentary film opportunity and was dubbed the Jackson Pollock of the 21st century. Episode Summary:In this episode, together with our co-host Kiana Talebpour from Milan based MdA design agency we meet Hormoz Hematian founder of the Dastan - a multidimensional program focusing on Iranian contemporary and modern art, including Dastan's Basement, Dastan+2 and Dastan:Outside, as well as Teer Art Tehran, a private-sector initiative that runs Teer Art Fair and Teer Art Week. By means of this genuine and crucial conversation Hormoz takes us on a journey to Iran, where even though art is classified as “informational material”, meaning it is technically exempt from sanctions, the situation poses great obstacles for the country's artists and galleries. Yet, Hormoz remains positive about Iran's vibrant artistic environment and the region's collecting patterns, as well as discusses with us the notion of Iranian artists gaining momentum on the international stage, both commercially and critically; the domestic art market that has been stymied by the state's isolationism at the same time being a subject of high viewership; and what solutions the spaces are considering at the moment to maintain relevance and connection with their communities and the rest of the world. What has triggered the Renaissance in Iranian art locally and internationally? How strong is the exchange between Iranian art scene and that of overseas? And how do you deal with the freedom of expression?*In collaboration with MdA Design Agency, this episode is dedicated to the dilemma of multiculturalism in relation to the current global isolation. The Speaker:Hormoz Hematian founded the gallery Dastan's Basement in 2012 in Tehran to showcase emerging and experimental Iranian art, later Dastan+2, dedicated to established artists and, most recently, Dastan: Outside, a program of curated pop-up exhibitions across Tehran. Together, the three initiatives cover the full spectrum of Iranian contemporary and modern art practices. In addition to an extensive local program of shows, pop-ups and eclectic collaborations, the Dastan group of galleries can be regularly sighted at established international venues such as Frieze New York, Art Basel Hong Kong, Art Dubai and Contemporary Istanbul. Aside from his work at Dastan, Hormoz Hematian is the founder of Teer Art Tehran (est. 2018). Teer Art Tehran is a private-sector initiative to promote modern and contemporary Iranian art through two sister events: Teer Art Fair and Teer Art Week. Once a year in June, Teer Art creates a space connecting local and international galleries, art collectors, industry professionals and visitors to engage in Teer Art Fair.Follow Hormoz's journey on InstagramHost: Farah PiriyeCo-host: Kiana Talebpour, MdA Design AgencySign up for ZEITGEIST19's newsletter at https://www.zeitgeist19.comFor sponsorship enquiries, comments, ideas and collaborations, email us at info@zeitgeist19.com

It’s a 13-hour flight to Dubai. Not the kind of travel to be taken lightly but worth it for the experience of Art Dubai. For visitors like me, Art Dubai represents more than the other fairs like the Armory Show or Miami Basel because the fair was the best excuse I could come up with to visit the Middle East. Like all art fairs, Art Dubai was primarily focused on sales, however, there was a consolidated effort by the fair to extend beyond the walls of the fair itself in order to become an entire art world event representing the region as a whole. Proof of this was in the number of the auxiliary programs, the many parallel events in the city that were directly supported by the fair, and the “Global Art Forum” lecture series that made the fair feel less like a sales driven event and more like an all encompassing cultural event. Art Dubai fully supported the Al Bastakiya Art Fair, the one official fringe art fair, by running a bus between the fairs and encouraging all visitors to spend time at both fairs. Art Dubai even ran programs in other cities like tours of the Sharjah Museum, or programs in Doha. The fair fully supported the START program, a Middle East based program that helps orphans, refugees and street children in the MENASA (Middle East North Africa South Asia) region, through creative development. While at the fair, I participated in one of START’s programs and helped introduce local autistic children to art-making and the fair itself. While the fair is not in charge of what any individual gallery chooses to show, there were some excellent pieces on display. Some of the highlights included El Anatsui’s “In the World But Don't Know the World” piece at London’s October Gallery booth. El Anatsui’s metal sculpture made from tens of thousands of bottle-tops that evoked sublime awe at its sheer enormity while also provoking a dialog about the cultural, social and economic histories of West Africa.By far, the most provoking and stimulating piece at Art Dubai was created by the winner of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize, Kader Attia and his curator Laurie Farrell. The Abraaj Capital Art Prize provides $1 million dollars in funding to three curator/artist pairs from MENASA to produce unique pieces for Art Dubai. Algerian born artist Kader Attia and curator Laurie Farrell produced “History of a Myth: Le Petit Dome du Rocher” which is an installation based in deep understanding of history and philosophy. In the piece, the viewer enters a darkened room to see a live camera feed projecting a sculpture of a bolt and nuts enlarged many times its size. The projection of the sculpture evokes the architecture of the Dome of the Rock and in so doing refers to Arab-Muslim history and all of the complexity of issues that surround representations of that history. The most amazing part of the installation is that it is an installation that cannot be accurately described in words, but a viewer must be in the room itself to feel the piece. Throughout the installation, there is a gentle breeze and sounds of nature that are subtly vibrating the sculpture and thus the projection as well. Kader Attia’s piece provides a peaceful space of contemplation where the viewer can mediate on the myriad of issues surrounding historical, architectural, political or aesthetic interpretations. The piece is simultaneously peaceful and provocative, troubling and soothing, pensive and visceral. Creating a piece that refuses to fit into any preconceived binary is definitely a piece that should not be missed.Next year’s Art Dubai fair should be even bigger and more comprehensive than this years and is definitely worth 13 hour flight.
