May has broken down many other barriers throughout her career and continues to do so with her production company, Lotus Media House, which currently produces “Shoes Off Inside”, a vodcast (video-podcast) that explores the API experience and beyond with hosts May Lee as well as veteran actors Kelly Hu and Tamlyn Tomita. May's work in API activism and education was recognized by Forbes when she was named one of Forbes 50 over 50 women leading the way in impact in 2021. Along with her media projects and activism, May served as adjunct instructor at USC's Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism and Artistic Assistant Professor at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. May's many other previous professional roles include LA-based correspondent and host for international network CGTN-America, talk show host for Oxygen Media founded by Oprah Winfrey, and lead anchor for CNBC in Singapore. May is a graduate of Mills College in Oakland, CA where she attained her BA in communications. She has authored two books, “May Lee, Live and in Person”, originally published by John Wiley, and “So You Want to be On-Air? A Guide to Anchoring, Hosting, Voiceovers and more”, published by Cognella, Inc., which was released in July of 2023. Kelly Hu is an actress from the island of O'ahu. She is a former fashion model and beauty queen who was crowned Miss Teen USA in 1985 becoming the pageant's third titleholder in history and its first Asian American winner. She then won Miss Hawai'i USA in 1993 becoming the first former Miss Teen USA to win a Miss USA state title. As an actress she starred in numerous films including The Scorpion King, Cradle 2 The Grave, X2, Finding ‘Ohana, and TV shows like The Vampire Diaries, the CW series Arrow, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Disney Channel's animated series Phineas and Ferb, and currently BMF on Starz. Kelly also co-hosts a podcast called Shoes Off Inside, a show that rattles cages and dismantles tired old stereotypes about race, age, sex and culture. As a powerlifting champion, three-time ‘Miss Fitness' winner in Japan and an action film star, Michiko Nishiwaki has been on quite a journey. When she left school to start working in human resources for the Mitsubishi bank in the 1970s, her life goals were similar to many other Japanese women in her position; to find a husband and have children. But for Michiko - obsessed with gymnastics, karate, fitness, singing and the arts from an early age - she decided to take a different path. Following her brother into the fitness industry, she became a gym owner in Japan and a pioneer in women's bodybuilding. At the height of her fame in the 1980s, she used her celebrity to break taboos, confronting the traditional image of women as the ‘weaker' sex in Japanese society, and using film and television to promote the health benefits of weight-training. Her fame caught the attention of Golden Harvest in Hong Kong, who invited her to make her big-screen debut in the 1985 action comedy, My Lucky Stars, alongside Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. A career as a Hong Kong martial arts star beckoned, mostly portraying evil Japanese gangsters in an array of wild, ‘girls with guns' action movies. In the late 1990s, she relocated to Hollywood, becoming a stunt performer in films like Charlie's Angels, Rush Hour 2 and Kill Bill, and doubling for the likes of Lucy Liu, Kelly Hu and Zhang Ziyi. Now, aged 64, she is making a comeback after over a decade away from the industry, working as Michelle Yeoh's stand-in for the bonkers 2021 smash hit, Everything Everywhere All at Once. As she approaches her film career with a renewed focus, what does the next chapter in Michiko's already incredible and multifaceted career look like? Ageism is no joke, especially for women and CTV news anchor Lisa LaFlamme is the latest victim who was punished for embracing her true self by going gray. As a fellow silver-haired broadcast journalist, this story got May really fired up so she called up her fellow fabulous silver sisters, Kelly Hu and Tamlyn Tomita, to break down the stereotypes of what women are supposed to look like, according to age old societal definitions (created mostly by men). Kelly, Tamlyn and May share their experiences with insecurity in their youth and how they grew into their own mature identity. Their stories are honest, authentic, powerful and rarely spoken about in such a public way, especially by AAPI women. We need to change the narrative about women and aging and it starts with this episode!
