Imagine accidentally being put off from a career in engineering by your brilliant grandfather who, without realising, made a career in the sector sound unreachable. Hepzi Rattray is a structural engineer with the global engineering company Ramboll, but for many years, she attempted to avoid following this career trajectory. In this penultimate podcast of 2024, we follow Hepzi's journey from school, where she turned down the offer of a top private school to attend Lady Margaret's, a church-state school in Parsons Green, West London. Some unexpected AS results forced something of a rethink and pointed her towards a somewhat unique engineering degree at Glasgow University.Even as Hepzi progressed through the course, she was still uncertain if this was the career for her. Her mind finally made up when she undertook a placement at Ramboll, and everything finally dropped into place. In this conversation, you will hear Hepzi's passion for her work, the strong relationship between engineering and her other passion, music, and why she is determined to use her position to inspire others into the profession. So pull up a chair, grab a drink and a mince pie (there must be one left), and enjoy Designed for Life in conversation with Structural Engineer Hepzi Rattray.  https://www.ramboll.com/Thanks as always go to The Edge Foundation for their unwavering support that makes this podcast possible.

She was one of England's highest members of the nobility. The niece of two king's of England, a cousin of Queen Elizabeth of York, Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury was one of only two peeresses in her own right. She was the royal governess to Princess Mary, she was the wealthiest woman in England, with sons who were popular and beloved members of Henry VIII's inner court, and yet, in the end, all of this went against her, for Margaret could not escape the blood that ran in her veins, which eventually put her, and her family, on an explosive collision course with the most volatile man to ever sit on the throne of England.

Shakespeare mentions “covenants drawn between's” in Cymbeline, and mentions covenants again in Henry VI when the King is negotiating a marriage to Lady Margaret, and then it concept comes up further in both Richard II and and in Taming of the Shrew. Covenants were a key player in the Protestant Reformation that was going on in Shakespeare's lifetime, but it was also a word that could meant to promise or form a contract. The history of the time period tells us that Swiss Reformed theologian Johannes Oecolampadius (1482–1531) was teaching in the 1520s what would later become known as “the covenant of redemption” A few years later Heinrich Bullinger (1504–75) published the first Protestant book devoted to explaining the covenant of grace, and of course there's John Calvin, who died the year Shakespeare was born, writing about the covenant of redemption, the covenant of works and the covenant of grace. All of these concepts heavily influenced not only the Church of England, but also The Kirk, the Church of Scotland in defining what it meant to be Protestant. In 1560, The Scottish Parliament designated the kirk as the sole form of religion in Scotland, and adopted the Scots Confession, rejecting Catholic teachings and practices. James VI argued the king was also head of the church, governing through bishops appointed by himself, and in 1603 when he became King of England, he also became head of the Church of England. Eventually Scotland would adopt what's known as the National Covenant, springing from different perspectives on who held ultimate authority over the church, and this National covenant incorporated the text of another famous covenant that was drafted when Shakespeare was just 17 years old, known as the Negative Confession (1581). Its authors used pieces from the sixteenth-century covenant ideas involving familiar actions and assigned gestures as part of the ritual of what it meant to take a covenant. Our guest this week is an expert on the history of 16th century covenanting and we are delighted to welcome Neil McIntyre to the show to help us unpack the religious history that was finding its' feet during Shakespeare's lifetime, as well as to help us understand what Shakespeare would have been referring to or what his audience would have expected to see when they heard and saw the ideas of covenanting appearing in plays like Henry VI and Cymbeline.  Get bonus episodes on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Thanks for joining us for our 14th season of Holy Donors, featuring another little-known Catholic philanthropist named Margaret Haughery. Margaret was an astute businesswoman who responded to God's call to serve children in need. Books and online sources have nicknamed Margaret “the mother of orphans”,“friend of orphans”, and more; yet we turn to our hosts to decide if Margaret meets their holy donor criteria of generosity, humility, and faithfulness. Like many of our other holy donors, Margaret was an Irish Catholic immigrant who came to the U.S. as a child, yet her first years in her new country were marked by tragedy. She lost most of her immediate family to yellow fever, and in a Cinderella style story, Margaret was orphaned and sent to live life as a young servant. Margaret never learned to read or write, yet as will be seen in her later years, Margaret was proactive and wise far beyond her formal education. When she was 21 years old, Margaret married Charles Haughery and, together, they had a child named Frances. Unfortunately, Margaret's string of tragedy continued, and both Charles and Frances passed away within a few years. With all of her immediate family gone again, Margaret turned to volunteering at a Sisters of Charity orphanage in New Orleans. In her efforts to serve and care for the children at the orphanage, Margaret showed her skills in fundraising and business. She saw problems and found solutions. Her passion to serve led her to do whatever it took to make sure the orphans in her charge were well cared for. At the end of this episode, however, Margaret and the orphans are facing eviction. What will happen next? How will Margaret solve this seemingly insurmountable problem?---Recommended reading: "Margaret, Friend of Orphans" by Mary Lou Widmer ---Holy Donors is brought to you by Petrus Development (petrusdevelopment.com) in cooperation with RED-C Catholic Radio (redcradio.org).For more about Holy Donors please visit our website at holydonors.com or find us @HolyDonors on Instagram and Facebook.

Henry VII (Welsh: Harri Tudur; 28 January 1457 – 21 April 1509) was the King of England and Lord of Ireland from his seizure of the crown on 22 August 1485 to his death. He was the first monarch of the House of Tudor. Henry attained the throne when his forces defeated King Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field, the culmination of the Wars of the Roses. He was the last king of England to win his throne on the field of battle. He cemented his claim by marrying Elizabeth of York, daughter of Richard's brother Edward IV. Henry was successful in restoring the power and stability of the English monarchy after the civil war. Henry is credited with a number of administrative, economic and diplomatic initiatives. His supportive policy toward England's wool industry and his standoff with the Low Countries had long-lasting benefit to the whole English economy. He paid very close attention to detail, and instead of spending lavishly he concentrated on raising new revenues. New taxes stabilised the government's finances, although a commission after his death found widespread abuses in the tax collection process. After a reign of nearly 24 years, he was peacefully succeeded by his son, Henry VIII. Henry VII was born at Pembroke Castle on 28 January 1457 to Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond. His father, Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond, died three months before his birth.[1] Henry's paternal grandfather, Owen Tudor, originally from the Tudors of Penmynydd, Isle of Anglesey in Wales, had been a page in the court of Henry V. He rose to become one of the "Squires to the Body to the King" after military service at the Battle of Agincourt.[2] Owen is said to have secretly married the widow of Henry V, Catherine of Valois. One of their sons was Edmund Tudor, father of Henry VII. Edmund was created Earl of Richmond in 1452, and "formally declared legitimate by Parliament".[3] Henry's main claim to the English throne derived from his mother through the House of Beaufort. Henry's mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, was a great-granddaughter of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, fourth son of Edward III, and his third wife Katherine Swynford. Katherine was Gaunt's mistress for about 25 years. When they married in 1396 they already had four children, including Henry's great-grandfather John Beaufort. Thus, Henry's claim was somewhat tenuous; it was from a woman, and by illegitimate descent. In theory, the Portuguese and Castilian royal families had a better claim as descendants of Catherine of Lancaster, the daughter of John of Gaunt and his second wife Constance of Castile. Gaunt's nephew Richard II legitimised Gaunt's children by Katherine Swynford by Letters Patent in 1397. In 1407, Henry IV, Gaunt's son by his first wife, issued new Letters Patent confirming the legitimacy of his half-siblings, but also declaring them ineligible for the throne.[4] Henry IV's action was of doubtful legality, as the Beauforts were previously legitimised by an Act of Parliament, but it further weakened Henry's claim. Nonetheless, by 1483 Henry was the senior male Lancastrian claimant remaining after the deaths in battle, by murder or execution of Henry VI, his son Edward of Westminster, Prince of Wales, and the other Beaufort line of descent through Lady Margaret's uncle, the 2nd Duke of Somerset. Henry also made some political capital out of his Welsh ancestry in attracting military support and safeguarding his army's passage through Wales on its way to the Battle of Bosworth.[5][6] He came from an old, established Anglesey family that claimed descent from Cadwaladr, in legend, the last ancient British king,[7] and on occasion Henry displayed the red dragon of Cadwaladr.[5] He took it, as well as the standard of St George, on his procession through London after the victory at Bosworth.[8] A contemporary writer and Henry's biographer, Bernard André, also made much of Henry's Welsh descent.[7] In reality, his hereditary connections to Welsh aristocrac --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support

Today is the anniversary of the death of sixty-six-year-old Lady Margaret Beaufort on 29th June 1509, just four days after she enjoyed the coronation celebrations of her grandson King Henry VIII and his queen consort. Catherine of Aragon. Margaret Beaufort was the matriarch of the Tudor dynasty and was an amazing woman, in many ways, yet she is surrounded by myth and it seems fashionable to see her as a religious zealot. But who was this influential Tudor lady? What did she do? In today's video, Claire Ridgway, founder of the Tudor Society, fleshes out Margaret Beaufort with a few facts about her and her life. You can see this podcast as a video at the following link:https://youtu.be/RGbjeIrxtKc You can find Claire at:https://www.theanneboleynfiles.com https://www.tudorsociety.comhttps://www.facebook.com/theanneboleynfiles/https://www.facebook.com/tudorsociety/https://twitter.com/AnneBoleynFiles https://twitter.com/thetudorsociety https://www.instagram.com/tudor.society/ https://www.instagram.com/anneboleynfiles/

One of the towering intellects of her day, Cavendish was a prodigious writer who was by her own account painfully shy, but whose works were revolutionary in their imaginativeness and insight. In this episode, we will explore the life of this remarkable woman, the story of her family during the tumult of the English Civil War, and how she navigated the male-dominated intellectual world of Stuart England.

This is the story of the field hospital at Merrion Square that was hastily set up during the Easter rebellion to cater to the wounded from both sides of the battle. Sir Robert Woods and his wife, Lady Margaret, lived with their family at No. 39 Merrion Square. Sir Robert Woods was an Ear Nose and Throat specialist and a surgeon at Sir Patrick Dun’s Hospital. His medical clinic was located at No. 40 Merrion Square. As casualties mounted during Easter Week, this building was hurriedly converted into a field hospital. Robert Woods, grandson of Dr. Robert Woods, reads from a long and detailed letter written by his aunt, Molly Woods, about her day by day experiences during the Rising. She is writing to her brother Thornley who is fighting with the British Forces in Flanders and who is later to lose his life in the Great War. Into the letter she has drawn some detailed diagrams of the positions of the Irish rebels and of the British forces in the area close to her home. Dorothy Dunlop, who now lives in Belfast and is the daughter of Molly Woods and Professor Gilbert Waterhouse of Trinity College Dublin, describes the memories and the extraordinary stories handed down to her through her family. Fascinating details are provided about the running of the temporary field hospital at No. 40 Merrion Square and about the defence of Trinity College by her father and others during the Rising. At that time he was a lieutenant in the Dublin University Officer Training Corps. After the fighting, he was presented with a sword by the grateful business people of Grafton Street for his efforts in preventing the destruction of the street, and saving it from the dire fate of nearby Sackville Street. The sword remains with the family today.

The Screen Director's Playhouse. From 01/09/49 to 09/28/51 this series was greatly enjoyed by the radio listening audience. It opened as NBC Theater and was also known as The Screen Directorâs Guild and The Screen Directorâs Assignment. But most people remember it simply as Screen Directorâs Playhouse. THIS EPISODE:WATERLOO BRIDGE is perhaps best described as one of a number of films "with an English accent" that played to American sympathies for England in the years when England largely stood alone against Nazi Germany. The story itself has a wartime setting: Beautiful ballerina Myra (Vivien Leigh) meets and falls passionately in love with officer Roy Cronin (Robert Taylor), only to be parted from him when he is called to duty during World War I. Alone and increasingly destitute, she learns that he has been killed in action--and so, broken hearted and unconcerned for herself, she drifts into prostitution, plying the world's oldest profession along Waterloo Bridge. Although Robert Taylor is a bit miscast, Leigh carries the film with a truly remarkable performance. In the opening portion of the scene, she is at the height of her youthful beauty, and cinematographer Joseph Ruttenberg makes the most of it; later, when experience has hardened her, she turns the graceful charm of her earlier scenes upside down to create the bitter, brassy tart that Myra has become. The cast also features an exceptional performance by Lucile Watson as Lady Margaret and notable turns by Maria Ouspenskaya, C. Aubrey Smith, and a host of others. Although less well known than such tragic romances as Garbo's CAMILLE, WATERLOO BRIDGE is easily the equal of such and considerably better than most. The romantic aura is powerful, the production values are meticulous, the direction, photography, and script are first rate. And at the center of it all we have perhaps the single most beautiful actress of her era, Vivien Leigh, in one of her finest performances. You'll need a box of tissues for this one; don't miss it.
