The debut LP of Wax Trax sleaze peddlers extraordinaire, My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, is the subject of this month's commentary podcast. Between the duo of Buzz McCoy and Groovie Mann getting in on the ‘darkened 60s psychedelia' angle years before it went mainstream, to their placement within Wax Trax and industrial music overall in the late 80s, to the more restrained (and dare we say tasteful?) sounds which crop up in the band's early work, there's plenty to discuss.

Jamie and Deb of Leo Graphics Chicago (4200 W. Diversey) join me for conversation and food from the remarkable Hermosa Restaurant (4356 W. Armitage). We're joined by Hermosa Restaurant owner/visionary Ethan Lim. Ethan has built up Hermosa on his own terms, and his warmth and authenticity are present inside the space and in every bite he prepares. As we talk, we dig into the sandwiches that everyone is talking about: Hermosa's Cambodian fried chicken sandwiches. Before you even listen or watch, take the time to order ahead and get one of them in your belly this week. This is a “top five” sandwich for Chicago; no exaggeration. Ethan's story, history and perspectives are refreshing, and I think you'll enjoy hearing what he has to say. As for the Leo Graphics team: Jamie and Deb are a blast to hang out with. We talked about their independent print shop business, which fuels and supports the local music community. They explain the process and economics behind their work in making record jackets (they share highlights from the likes of King Gizzard and Vortis), and the benefits of focusing on smaller-batch orders.  They also shared examples of the work they do on physical records; if you're watching the video version, you'll love seeing what they did for artists like Naked Raygun and My Life With the Thrill Kill Kult. The Leo Graphics chat came to a crescendo when Jamie and Deb show what they brought for “show and tell”: Car Con Carne stickers of all sizes & a cool banner! They do fantastic work, and if you're looking for print work: signs, album jackets, decals, drum heads, stickers … whatever … give them a shout! Jamie and Deb are also in 13 Monsters. If you see this in time, check them out at Cary's Lounge (2251 W Devon Ave) on Saturday, May 11! Car Con Carne (a Q101 podcast) is presented by Alex Ross Art. Vanillaphase are a four piece electronic band from Cleveland, Ohio who believe in the cross pollination of musical ideas from diverse genres. Harnessing the power of bone-shaking beats welded with catchy melodies, lush harmonies, and spacey atmospherics, Vanillaphase are tour-de-force in musical surrealism and have been described as “a musical portal to a blissed out galaxy”. Formed in the quarantine days of late 2020, Nico Denaldo, Taylor Ripley and Rick Taggert quickly released their sultry debut EP, “One Trick Pony”, as well as the uptempo, full-throttle single, “Almost Supernova” in early 2021.  They further showcased their unique vibe with a string of livestream performances during the pandemic, the latest of which was highlighted by the late-summer addition of their new female vocal powerhouse, Generic Goth Girl. Their heavy, yet polished electronic sound is a satisfying, seamless mix of trip hop and post-industrial, touching on elements of their collective influences, ranging from Thrill Kill Kult and Meat Beat Manifesto to Aphex Twin and The Orb.  They released their new album Magic Suitcase on August 12th, 2022. https://www.facebook.com/Vanillaphase https://twitter.com/_mr_jackpots https://www.tiktok.com/@vanillaphase https://soundcloud.com/vanillaphase https://www.youtube.com/channel/@vanillaphase https://vanillaphase.com/press-kit/

The power of Satan compels you... to listen to this month's episode of The Classic Horrors Club podcast! You'll learn how, at the peak of 1970s "Satanic Panic," three movies had more in common than simple devil worship: The Brotherhood of Satan (1971), The Devil's Rain (1975), and Race with the Devil (1975.) . Jeff and Richard have one of their biggest disagreements about one of them, but escape the podcast without bloodshed. Chicago had a reputation for producing some of the notable heavier bands of the 1990s, including Ministry, Smashing Pumpkins, The Jesus Lizard, Shellac, and My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult. You can now add Wicker Man to that list. Not familiar with the band Wicker Man, you say? We're here to help, thanks to one of our knowledgeable Patreon patrons. The band managed just one full-length, their 1995 self-titled debut for Hollywood Records, and it's both hard and easy to understand why the band is all but forgotten. The quality and craftsmanship is clear, heavy riffs that touch on power metal, stoner rock, post-hardcore, and more that could satisfy a wide variety of metal fans. But looking back on 1995, it's also easy to see how the band was out of step with the emerging nu metal and industrial scenes, which makes rediscovering the band all the sweeter.   Songs In This Episode: Intro - You Annoy Me 19:26 - Party Grrrl 26:56 - Don't Believe A Word 29:58 - Hey Hey Hey 39:47 - Brainfreeze Outro - Sugarfoot   Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. It's a space belonging to you alone, that you can curate as the hub for your online presence as a musician. If someone sees your video on YouTube or hears your music on Spotify, they Google you and your website comes up. From there, you can capture their attention and engage them with your music and your brand. Artists tend to undervalue the power of websites just as much as mailing lists. Facebook is not a website. Bandcamp is not a website. Fans want a one-stop shop where they can listen to your music, watch your videos, learn about upcoming shows, and find out more about you. The easier it is to find you, the easier it is to follow you. Creating and maintaining a proper website isn't just for your fans, either. Talent buyers, music journalists, and all sorts of industry professionals are more biased towards artists who represent themselves well with a professional-looking online presence. -- Today, we are discussing websites and why artists need them. -- Intro to Bandzoogle Purpose of a Website How to Set Up Your Website Website Insights to Understand Your Fans Monetization & Ecommerce Tools Driving Traffic to Your Website (connect to SEO and Email Marketing and EPK) Creating a Mailing List The #1 Mistake -- “A website is really where the rubber meets the road for artists. Just a few hours before their show, I sat down with Frankie Nardiello, A.K.A. Groovie Mann, vocalist for My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult. It was almost 30 years since I had last seen the band perform. I caught them early on in their career and have been a fan ever since. Groovie is one of the nicest rock stars you're likely to ever meet. He always stays after the shows and visits with fans and signs items. Thrill Kill Kult are veterans of the industrial, electro-rock scene and have been incredibly influential on many other bands. The band was one of the lucky few to be a part of the now-legendary Wax Trax Records! The band released a new album this year entitled "In The House Of Strange Affairs". Groovie gave me the scoop on recording this album as well as his take on the music business, touring and so much more.

Devil's Night may not be until October, but that's no reason not to FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP! On this episode of The O/S/T Party, we discuss THE CROW, the 1994 dark comic fantasy that served as Brandon Lee's tragic swansong, and launched the goth phase for a million terrible 90s kids. This soundtrack was one of the surprise hits of the mid-90s, mostly remembered now for Nine Inch Nails covering Joy Division, a pretty decent soundtrack cut from The Cure, and another appearance from our pals My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult! But did you know this soundtrack also features Rage Against the Machine? Or Rollins Band? Or Pantera? Or Violent Femmes? Why, you ask? Well, we don't really address it in this episode, but it just goes to show how many heavy hitters they managed to cram onto one disc. SHOW NOTES: Devil's Night Intro: "Dance Rocket" by Jesse Spillane Outro: "Color Me Once" by Violent Femmes Have a soundtrack you'd like us to cover? Email us at OSTPartyPod@gmail.com
