Demi Knight Clark joined us on The Fabricator Podcast to talk about her efforts to open career pathways in the welding and manufacturing industries to people of all backgrounds and genders. She talks about how her grandmother's work as a Rosie the Riveter during World War II fueled Clark's own interest in the trades, pivoting from a career in construction, focusing on workforce development initiatives that engage underrepresented populations, and partnering with welder Nate Bowman on initiatives with Lincoln Electric, Goodwill Industries, Marketing Metal, and more. Clark emphasizes the need for more inclusive recruiting, welcoming environments, and mentorship to attract and retain a diverse workforce in the skilled trades. Her mission is to "put welding in places where welding is not" and inspire the next generation to see the opportunities in modern manufacturing. Lincoln Electric is a storied, large company in welding. The company collaborated with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop a welding technology that is now actively used in production. Lincoln Electric manufactures oil and gas pressure vessels, industrial components, and submarine parts. In this episode of the 3DPOD, Mark Douglass, Business Development Manager for Lincoln Electric Additive Solutions, shares insights about the company's journey in additive manufacturing and its growth ambitions. Lincoln Electric utilizes Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM), and Mark explains when this technology is the optimal choice and when it is not. The sheer size of the objects Lincoln produces—ranging into the thousands of pounds—is truly impressive. This podcast will likely inspire many to take a closer look at WAAM.

Additive manufacturing and robots are parallel technologies, both digitally enabled tools for manufacturing that are advancing in adoption. But they also enable each other. 3D printing can provide the grippers, end effectors and other specialized tooling that robots require to serve production. And robots are driving AM forward as well. Collaborative robots or cobots are being used to tend 3D printer farms, sometimes mounted on autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) for a fully mobile, as well as automated, solution. And robots are opening opportunities for larger and more complex part production, by providing the motion for a growing number of large format additive manufacturing (LFAM) systems. In this episode of AM Radio, Gardner Business Media Robots & Autonomy editor Julia Hider joins Stephanie Hendrixson and Pete Zelinski to discuss how AM and robots interact, and specific examples of this interaction. As America's civil works infrastructure facilities age beyond their initial design lives, so do the thousands of individual components that keep them functioning. These original components were often fabricated using vintage material and manufacturing methods, making them costly, burdensome and time-consuming to replicate. However, if one of these parts were to suddenly break, that failure could shut down a facility for months, causing significant national economic damage. Faced with this challenge, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is studying how innovative techniques, such as additive manufacturing (large-scale 3D printing), advanced materials and design optimization can be used to replace vintage infrastructure components faster and at a lower cost while maintaining, and even improving, their properties. This research resulted in a recent collaboration with the USACE Detroit District and Lincoln Electric to manufacture the largest U.S. civil works infrastructure component produced by a 3D printer – a 12-foot-long, 6,000-pound metal part for the ship arrestor system on the Poe Lock, one of two active locks on the Soo Locks facility. We discuss ERDC's advanced manufacturing research with Dr. Robert Moser and Dr. Zack McClelland from ERDC's Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory. Moser is a Senior Scientific Technical Manager for Materials, Manufacturing and Structures, and McClelland is a research mechanical engineer. We talk about the existing state of aging infrastructure and the role additive manufacturing can play to meet this challenge (3:49), how ERDC became involved in 3D printing and how that capability has evolved (7:09), ERDC's focus areas for advanced manufacturing R&D (11:36), and the project to manufacture the largest U.S. civil works infrastructure component produced by a 3D printer (18:40). We also discuss how ERDC is working to overcome some of the challenges of 3D-printing large infrastructure components (25:27), how ERDC's high-performance computing capability boosts this effort (28:49), how it has benefitted from military research (39:02) and what the future holds (49:11). In this insightful episode, Matt Fieldman shares the success and strategies behind the America Works program, focusing on strengthening the manufacturing workforce across the United States. Through collaboration with the Manufacturing Extension Partnership system, community colleges, and other stakeholders, America Works addresses critical workforce challenges by improving recruitment, upskilling current employees, and implementing company-focused strategies. Fieldman discusses specific examples of innovative partnerships, like those with Lincoln Electric and the Uniquely Abled Project, that demonstrate the program's commitment to creating inclusive opportunities for diverse and often underestimated populations. These initiatives not only fill immediate labor shortages but also contribute to the long-term sustainability and competitiveness of the manufacturing sector. The conversation highlights the program's broad reach, from inner-city youth apprenticeships to supporting workers with special needs, illustrating a comprehensive approach to workforce development that leverages the strengths of local communities and industries. In this week's episode, Beau chats with Michael Klee, a technical sales rep with Lincoln Electric who had quite the journey to get to the position he is in today. He reached out because he heard us talking about the Hyperfill system on a previous podcast and wanted to explain exactly what it is and how long it has been around. He tells us about the kinds of industries that would use this new system and its benefits over other high deposition processes. He gives us a background on how he learned to weld and then pursued a career as a welding engineer instead, talks about how his work with Lincoln has taken him around the world, and then leaves us with some advice to keep your mind open to opportunities and the importance of networking.
