Additive manufacturing and robots are parallel technologies, both digitally enabled tools for manufacturing that are advancing in adoption. But they also enable each other. 3D printing can provide the grippers, end effectors and other specialized tooling that robots require to serve production. And robots are driving AM forward as well. Collaborative robots or cobots are being used to tend 3D printer farms, sometimes mounted on autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) for a fully mobile, as well as automated, solution. And robots are opening opportunities for larger and more complex part production, by providing the motion for a growing number of large format additive manufacturing (LFAM) systems. In this episode of AM Radio, Gardner Business Media Robots & Autonomy editor Julia Hider joins Stephanie Hendrixson and Pete Zelinski to discuss how AM and robots interact, and specific examples of this interaction.   Find photos, video, related links and the transcript for this episode on AdditiveManufacturing.Media.   This episode is brought to you by The Cool Parts Show. #28: Advanced manufacturing: Using 3D printing, new materials and optimized designs to produce large-scale components

Power of ERDC

Play Episode Listen Later May 1, 2024 52:43

As America's civil works infrastructure facilities age beyond their initial design lives, so do the thousands of individual components that keep them functioning. These original components were often fabricated using vintage material and manufacturing methods, making them costly, burdensome and time-consuming to replicate. However, if one of these parts were to suddenly break, that failure could shut down a facility for months, causing significant national economic damage.  Faced with this challenge, the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) is studying how innovative techniques, such as additive manufacturing (large-scale 3D printing), advanced materials and design optimization can be used to replace vintage infrastructure components faster and at a lower cost while maintaining, and even improving, their properties. This research resulted in a recent collaboration with the USACE Detroit District and Lincoln Electric to manufacture the largest U.S. civil works infrastructure component produced by a 3D printer – a 12-foot-long, 6,000-pound metal part for the ship arrestor system on the Poe Lock, one of two active locks on the Soo Locks facility. We discuss ERDC's advanced manufacturing research with Dr. Robert Moser and Dr. Zack McClelland from ERDC's Geotechnical and Structures Laboratory. Moser is a Senior Scientific Technical Manager for Materials, Manufacturing and Structures, and McClelland is a research mechanical engineer. We talk about the existing state of aging infrastructure and the role additive manufacturing can play to meet this challenge (3:49), how ERDC became involved in 3D printing and how that capability has evolved (7:09), ERDC's focus areas for advanced manufacturing R&D (11:36), and the project to manufacture the largest U.S. civil works infrastructure component produced by a 3D printer (18:40). We also discuss how ERDC is working to overcome some of the challenges of 3D-printing large infrastructure components (25:27), how ERDC's high-performance computing capability boosts this effort (28:49), how it has benefitted from military research (39:02) and what the future holds (49:11). In the modern utility landscape, rapid response and thorough follow ups are key when major events occur, and that requires the teaming up of various corners of the industry. To assist in that process, the Electricity Subsector Coordinating Council (ESCC) serves as the primary liaison between the federal government and the electric power industry in preparing for and responding to national-level disasters or threats to critical infrastructure. The ESCC may fly under the radar but the impact of its work surely does not. In this episode of the Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast, Kevin Wailes, CEO of Lincoln Electric Systems and member of the ESCC joins to discuss the evolution of the ESCC, its priorities, and actions in response to the changing landscape of the power industry. 3D printing for repair and replacement is an underappreciated but potentially very valuable application for this technology. The ability to add material only where necessary and to do so in an automated fashion allows worn surfaces to be rebuilt with less human labor, keeping items such as aircraft blades in service for longer. Additive manufacturing offers an avenue for manufacturing parts no longer in inventory or production, by skipping over tooling to arrive more quickly (and often, more affordably) at the needed component — it be a brush mat, bearing housing, mixer blade, clamp or tractor tread. But a 3D printed replacement part is rarely a 1-to-1 swap; changing to this production method almost always introduces additional benefits. In this episode of AM Radio, Pete Zelinski and I discuss these examples and more, plus why a 3D printed replacement is almost always an upgrade.  This episode of the AM Radio podcast is brought to you by PTXPO. Mentioned in this episode: Acme Manufacturing's automated aircraft blade repair system using Optomec directed energy deposition 3D printing Video showing Optomec's 3D printer applying material to a worn blade Tractor treads replaced with polyurethanes printed directly onto steel The 3D printed "carpet" made by OPT Industries to replace a brush mat for a vibratory separator Lincoln Electric's WAAM-printed bearing housing and mixer blade for a decades-old machine used in the production of flux 3D printed replacement clamp for an F-16 aircraft The "Mighty Duct" developed by HP and Siemens Helicopter oil collector upgrade produced by Allegheny Technologies Inc. In this episode, you will learn about Ryan Eubank and his mission in life. Ryan has a hidden disability to most people. As a kid in elementary school, he saw that learning was easy for most other kids. Other kids. And when those other kids saw kids like him who struggled with reading and writing, the words “little dummies” rang in his ears. It may not have been every day, but Ryan could see it and hear it from afar, and he knew who the other kids were talking about. He remembers that when he was in second grade, the school was trying to figure out if he had ADHD or dyslexia. The diagnosis was dyslexia, a learning disorder marked by an impairment of the ability to recognize and comprehend written words. Throughout Ryan's school years, he was put into special classes called Learning Disabled (LD) classes, setting apart those who had learning disabilities from “regular-education” students. In elementary school, a learning disability was a label you wore during the school day because you would leave the regular-ed classroom. Ryan went to special-ed classes for his reading disability or for extra time on assignments. He also received special tutoring and speech therapy because of a speech impediment called tongue thrust. Ryan has struggled through school his entire life and truly understands what it is like to suffer during school. Ryan has become a master welder and teacher. He has taught at the high school level, college, and international levels as well as Lincoln Electric. Ryan has taught thousands of individuals and has helped them become not only great welders but high-character individuals. He will soon be going to Tanzania to help create a welding school for their country so they can help revitalize their industrial needs. And so with me in the studio is a familiar voice, Bill Yates.... BILL YATES:  Hi, Wendy.  Good to be here. So you may notice that Nick Walker is not in the room, he was here for the first 100 episodes.  And Nick was actually, he acquired so much knowledge as a project manager, he's taken a new gig as a project – just kidding.  He has retired, and he has moved closer to family so he can be with his grandkids, and he and his wife can spoil them. WENDY GROUNDS:  I think he actually mentioned he was project managing a wedding coming up. BILL YATES:  That's true. WENDY GROUNDS:  So, yeah, he's using those skills. BILL YATES:  Yes, that's absolutely true. Meet Carrie WENDY GROUNDS:  You know Bill, we've all had those difficult conversations, those conversations where the stakes are high and everyone has a different opinion and then emotions get involved. Well, on this episode, we're talking about just those conversations. Crucial ones and our guest Carrie Woods is going to describe to us how facts and stories drive our emotions and also how we can move from those crucial conversations to getting results.  Carrie is an author, speaker, master trainer, and executive coach as well as a Certified Platinum Level VitalSmarts Trainer in Crucial Conversations.  Carrie, welcome to Manage This, we're so glad you could join us today. CARRIE WOODS:  Thank you.  Thank you so much.  It is absolutely fantastic to be here today. WENDY GROUNDS:  Well, we're happy to have you. So could you just tell us, what brought you into this line of work, and what makes you passionate about it? CARRIE WOODS:  Absolutely, so about 14 years ago I transitioned from the corporate world into being a full-time writer, of all things. And with that, as my client base grew, I moved into instructional design, and from instructional design moved into facilitating the content that I was developing for various organizations, and so today we work with companies like Amazon, Volkswagen, Lincoln Electric, helping develop leaders at all levels to be more effective. Getting into Crucial Conversations BILL YATES:  Well, so one of the things we're excited about is this whole topic of Crucial Conversations, and it comes from a book, a very popular book, something that a lot of life coaches and others put to work.  And I'm excited about seeing how we can relate this to the world of project managers.  How did you first get into this Crucial Conversations?  Did you read the book?  Did somebody recommend it?  Or how did you become a master trainer with this? CARRIE WOODS:  Oh, my goodness, so several years ago, actually, the book was recommended to me, and as I shared – so we work with all kinds of companies. And what we found, especially with  my background as a writer,

This week, your hosts Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey interview Jerome Block of Levy Konisberg LLP ( https://www.levylaw.com/ )and Mike Shepard of Shepard Law ( https://shepardlawfirm.com/ )   Remember to rate and review GTP in iTunes: Click Here To Rate and Review     Case Details:   Levy Konigsberg LLP partner Jerome Block and Shepard Law founder Mike Shepard explain how they worked together to try this first lung cancer case against tobacco and asbestos product companies for claims of exposure. Their client, Louis Summerlin, became addicted to menthol cigarettes before the first official health warnings were issued in 1966. Despite the fact that RJ Reynolds Tobacco Company knew their cigarettes were addictive and could cause lung cancer, the company continued to market their products, which contained nicotine levels far beyond the addiction threshold and failed to properly address potential health hazards. Years of smoking menthol cigarettes, in combination with nearly 25 years of exposure to asbestos-lined brakes while working as an auto mechanic, resulted in Summerlin suffering the synergistic effect of two major causes of lung cancer: cigarette smoke and asbestos. He died as a result. A Boston jury returned a verdict of $43.1 million, including $13.1 million for Summerlin's family and $30 million in punitive damages against RJ Reynolds.     Click Here to Read/Download the Complete Trial Documents     Guest Bios:   Jerome H. Block   Jerome (Jerry) Block is a partner at Levy Konigsberg LLP and specializes in representing people diagnosed with asbestos-related diseases including mesothelioma (cancer caused by asbestos exposure) and lung cancer (cancer caused by both asbestos exposure and smoking). Jerry is one of the only attorneys in the United States to have won multiple jury verdicts against both the asbestos and tobacco industries. Jerry is a fierce and passionate advocate who views his cases as battles for public health.   Jerry tries his cases in courtrooms throughout the country and has successfully defended his jury verdicts on appeal in courts including the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, the New York Appellate Division and the Delaware Supreme Court. Jerry's mastery of the law and rules of evidence have resulted in an extraordinarily high winning percentage at trial and the rare distinction of never having a jury verdict reversed on appeal.   Over the course of his career, Jerry has obtained hundreds of millions of dollars in jury verdicts and pre-trial settlements. Jerry is known for his willingness to take on the most challenging cases, and has won trials against numerous large corporations who made asbestos, talc and/or tobacco products including (in alphabetical order): American Tobacco Company, Anaconda-Ericsson, Brown & Williamson, Dana Corporation, Exxon-Mobil, Ford Motor Company, Foster-Wheeler, Hobart Brothers, John Crane, Inc., Johnson & Johnson, Johnson & Johnson Consumer, Inc., Johnson Controls, Lincoln Electric, National Grid, Okonite, Philip Morris, R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, and Spirax Sarco.     Read Full Bio       Michael Shepard   I founded Shepard Law on the principle that personal relationships matter. We represent real people who are suffering from serious injuries. Our clients usually aren't familiar with the way the legal system works—they never planned to be dealing with the problems that they suddenly have to face. They want someone to talk to them in plain language like a real person, someone who will listen to their story and who understands what they're going through. They want to be heard—to get help tailored to their unique situation, not be treated like an asset that's passed off to another law firm. I've made it a personal promise that no client will ever feel that way when they work with myself or any of the attorneys at Shepard Law.   For over 25 years, I've represented plaintiffs in personal injury cases. And every year, my firm achieves millions of dollars in verdicts or settlements for clients. Along the way, I've come to know wonderful people who have gone through some extremely difficult ordeals. I've had the chance to spend time with WWII veterans, construction workers, mechanics, and folks from many other trades and occupations whom I might not have had a chance to meet, let alone help, had I chosen another career path. I've learned something from each and every one of them.   If you choose to partner with us at Shepard Law, I look forward to learning something from you too.   Read Full Bio       Show Sponsors:     Legal Technology Services - LTSatlanta.com     Digital Law Marketing - DigitalLawMarketing.com     Harris, Lowry, and Manton - hlmlawfirm.com       Free Resources:   Stages Of A Jury Trial - Part 1 Stages Of A Jury Trial - Part 2

InternCLE Episode 027 - Intern Interview – Nick KopycinskiLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/nicholas-kopycinski-5a159813b/Nick is a student at The Ohio State University in his senior year, studying Mechanical Engineering. I saw Nick’s posting on LinkedIn about the internship experience he had at Lincoln Electric and messaged him to see if he would consider being interviewed for the show. He was kind enough to say yes. Nick is a bright young man, whose future will be bright – and in the CLE no less! Nick used internships to identify the specific areas of Mechanical engineering that he is interested in. Nick has worked in 3 companies and completed 5 semesters of internships. He has completed co-ops during the school year and in the summer. Nick began his internship search early. He went to the career fair his Freshman year. Early on he looked just for his “1st job” and then as time went on, he was able to be more intentional about what he was looking for in an experience. For Nick, It was important for him that a company or internship program would trust him to contribute. He wanted to be provided the opportunity to complete valuable work and he wanted to learn more about the careers in a Mechanical Engineering field. His first internship was with Lincoln Electric, in a manufacturing setting. Next he interned in a product design position. Nick learned that the pace was faster in the manufacturing setting, because product design can often be a long process it takes time to see the finished product. His internships have given Nick the confidence in his chosen career path. Nick has enjoyed working in Columbus, Canton and Cleveland. Cost of living attracts him to the region, as well as the current energy of the cities. Nick encourages involvement in student organizations that are related to your chosen profession. Nick gives interns the advice to use your downtime well, don’t sit around on social media – go to your supervisor to get something to do. For employers, he says keep people busy and stay involved with the internship experience. Students need these experiences to learn about their profession. It is hard for an intern to approach an employer and express that they are not learning or enjoying the experience. Promote learning too, whether its workshops or lunch and learns. Interns who have good experiences, return as stronger new hires. Upcoming events:NEO Makers: Oatey Co. Content Marketing Quickie

Hey, it’s Stiles from Brand Content Studios and here’s your Content Marketing Quickie for the week of June 11, 2019.   -You’re probably getting ripped off. That’s right, if you buy digital ads for your company you are definitely getting ripped off, it’s just a matter of how badly. Cybersecurity company Cheq just released a study that shows advertisers will blow more than $23B globally to ad fraud this year alone. For every ad dollar spent, 10-15% of it winds up in the pockets of companies who are actually supposed to protect you from digital ad fraud. Now if you’re Polyanna and think it couldn’t possibly be that bad, you’ll embrace another study that was done using the exact same methodology by the Association of National Advertisers. They say yeah, you’re getting robbed, but it’s only costing advertisers $5.8B, and that’s down from 2017. You’re supposed to feel good about that. But the fact that two studies who approached it the same way came to two wildly different conclusions only underlines the truth…digital advertising is such an in-the-shadows, slight-of-hand shell game ecosystem that you can’t get to the truth. And when you’re stealing money from people, the last thing you want is for things to be clear and trackable. That’s just a little tip for all you amoral kids from Uncle Mike. Guy Tytunovich is Cheq’s CEO, and he used to be with Israeli intelligence by the way, he said, “We wouldn’t have run this research if it wasn’t for other research pieces we strongly disagreed with and, in some cases, felt were inadvertently misleading.” Cheq found up to 30% of digital ads are affected by fraud, so that’d be around 21T per year. It’s actually campaigns with cheaper CPMs that get hit the hardest. And did you know for every impression served, at least 20 different companies have their hands in the digital ad ecosystem pot, all taking a cut? If nothing is done about ad fraud, and don’t hold your breath, it’s going to reach $26B next year, then $32B by 2021. Roberto Cavazos, a University of Baltimore economics professor isn’t holding his breath, He says, “There’s little regulation or disincentive against fraud.” And the final nail in the coffin is, marketers don’t seem to care! They paid a boatload of the company’s budget to buy digital ads, they checked the box, and nobody seems interested in whether they got what they paid for. So I guess everybody wins? https://adage.com/article/digital/report-ad-fraud-hit-23-billion-isnt-going-down/2174721   -Well I hope I didn’t leave you too disillusioned about digital ads in that last story but if you’re a publisher, hang onto your headgear because it gets worse. You know about tracking the users of publisher websites, right? Advertisers will pay the publisher to get personal info on the site’s users, then they’ll combine that with data they buy somewhere else to form these pretty intense profiles they use to follow people around the web and target them with relevant ads. The idea is that this makes the publishers a lot of money so they can continue offering their content free to readers, who of course are paying, they’re just paying with their privacy. It’s a nice idea but it’s not that true. New research found selling out their readers with this kind of tracking actually only gets publishers a whopping 4% more revenue than good old-fashioned ads based on context. That works out to $.00008 per ad. Wow, somebody’s getting a new coffee maker for the break room! This isn’t exactly breaking news, it’s long been doubted the user data selling and reader tracking helped much. So it boils down to the ad tech industry getting a huge favor from publishers while all publishers get is a slimier reputation with their users. How big of a favor? Some earlier studies found advertisers pay up to 500% more for targeted ads than contextual ads. Doing a little math here, if content publishers only benefit 4% of that, carry the one, calculate out pi to 7 decimals…hey where’d that other 496% go? Some people point out that tracking even demonetizes publisher audiences because their readers are simply followed to lower value sites where they can be targeted with ads for less. And as if all that weren’t a big enough kick in the pants, guess who’s accountable for privacy and data protection laws. That’s right, the publishers. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/06/research-shows-publishers-benefit-little-tracking-ads   -Alright enough about all that, let’s talk influencer marketing. What if you wanted to do influencer marketing, but there were no influencers out there that are just right for what you do? Craig Coffey had that problem. He’s director of marketing communications at Lincoln Electric. This may shock you, but there just aren’t that many influencers with large established audiences around welding. By the way, if you want a solid income and job security, let me be the first to propose a prosperous career in welding to you. Only .01% of the world’s population knows how to do it. I’m not kidding. Because of that, Craig knew it didn’t really make a lot of sense to try to become the biggest influencer in and amass a huge welding audience. But that didn’t mean the company couldn’t become the kind of influencer they needed but couldn’t find. They thought broader than welding and established Spring Make, an event that brought together not just welders, but makers of all kinds, like woodworkers and blacksmiths. Score. People came out of the woodwork – ha, see what I did there – to not just talk about what they do, but to broaden their maker skills into these other areas. There were classes in making things, but also classes about how to make something else…content. And if they’re out there making content, who are they going to see as the leader in the space? That’s right, Lincoln Electric, who put on the event. In fact, Spring Make quickly became a content brand itself, separate from Lincoln Electric. And why not? The event generates enough content to carry them through an entire year. If you do big events but you have no content strategy for it and aren’t getting any content assets out of it by the way, we need to talk. Needless to say, Craig’s happy because they made themselves the influencer in all things maker. Craig throws these fun stats at us. 40% of customers are using ad blockers. 70% of millennials prefer products endorsed by non-celebrity bloggers. And influencer marketing delivers 11x higher ROI than traditional marketing. Write it in lipstick on your mirror, “You can be the star you’re looking for.”   -And lastly and quickly, you know I’m always blabbing on about how content should make people feel something. Anything. If it doesn’t, all you’ve done is add to the meaningless noise out there that makes life harder for everyone. Well new research out of Finland says not only can you make people feel emotions, those emotions physically show up in different ways in the body. In other words, they’re so powerful they are literally felt. Ever have your heart broken? That happened in your mind but it’s felt in the chest. Same with stress, which is felt in the neck, and anxiety which shows up in the stomach. Of course, different people process emotion differently depending on their tolerance and history, but still, this is something to keep in mind for those of you who still think the content you make doesn’t have to play to human emotion. https://in.mashable.com/science/3966/decoded-why-people-feel-emotions-in-their-bodies   That’s the Content Marketing Quickie for this week. If you think it was any good, and if you think good content should get a little help, a review or a subscribe would be great. Let other content marketers know about this mess. Be back next week.

At the AeroDef conference in Long Beach, Calif., Lincoln Electric’s Mark Douglass talks about acquiring Baker Industries, experimenting in additive manufacturing—and planning to specialize in large-format metal AM: parts that are larger than a microwave. AM is a significant “growth leg” in the 124-year-old firm’s just-hatched 2025 plan, he noted. Among the concrete examples in AM his firm can point to already: Oakridge National Labs now has three of Lincoln’s robotic AM systems for producing large metal parts. Lincoln is set to this year open a 3D printing facility in Cleveland.

The Fortune 1000 company is headquartered in Euclid, Ohio, United States and has a worldwide network of distributors and sales offices covering more than 160 countries. It has 42 manufacturing locations in North America, Europe, Middle East, Asia and Latin America. It also operates manufacturing alliances and joint ventures in 19 countries.[1] Lincoln started in 1895 by two brothers – John and James Lincoln. 11,000 employees worldwide but with a small family feel. Amy is a consummate recruiter and advocate for students. Her passion for helping students find a home that matches their career goals is evident throughout the interview. In the Cleveland location Lincoln hires about 75 interns and co-ops year-round. Interns are hired at other locations as well. There is a summer internship program and a fall and spring co-op program. Challenges: Lincoln is not a household name to some degree, so that can be a recruiting challenge. Getting all the hiring managers to submit their requests. What Lincoln does well: Assign interns a “Peer” instead of a mentor – this is not someone who is supposed to tell them what to do – it’s someone close in age or experience to them that is just a resource. Programming – offers a good deal of training to interns, for example backpacks to briefcase training. Hyland’s new global focus poses recruiting and HR challenges. They work on those issues locally and rely on their in-country HR resources as well. Challenges – Sourcing the requisitions from managers within Hyland to determine how many and what type of interns are needed. Using new forms approach to keep track. What makes a strong candidate? Looking at technical skills, educational background, also soft skills are just as important. “You can’t always teach those soft skills” teamwork, communication and being adaptable are importantOrientation – Looks like a full time hire really, attend meetings, work with their teams, also have weekly intern specific events – lunch and learns, service day, socials. Managers meet weekly or bi-weekly for feedback for the mentors. HR checks in mid-summer and at the end of the summer. Hyland asks interns for feedback as well and it can be anonymous. What makes the internship Rock? Being able to extend offers for full time hire or continued internship makes the program great. Be it legs, or wholesale frames. I'm curious to get your input on buying a beginner priced machine (140a) vs. The Lincoln 210MP. I see a lot of benefit to going with the 210MP (particularly in the dummy proof set-up), but at double the premium, it's a hard pill to swallow if a 140amp machine will get me through most projects.I don't do this full-time, but my commisions are fairly steady. The most immediate example is I had some logs milled up this fall. I will likely end up making some simple slab style tables with them, so some square or trapezoidal legs are probably in order.I don't remember you talking about your machine on the podcast except saying that you bought it a year early because the 210MP came out the following year at near the same price point. If you've gone into more details and I've forgotten, I apologize. I know Johnny is firmly in the 210MP/buy once, cry once camp...I'm just curious to get your take on how much value the cpu set-up and higher amperage adds for light duty furniture fab.I've been researching over the past month and am sort of blown away by the constant backtracking on where a 140amp machine is limited. There's a lot of great welding tutorial info out there. And a lot of great info as it relates to things like pipe fitting and auto work. But far less info when it comes to furniture fabrication.Anyway, I appreciate all that you do/inspiration.
