If you've ever wondered what the heck you're doing here in vetmed, then this episode is for you. We get to dive deep with veterinarian and author, Dr. Mike Bugg, about his new book, You're Gonna Get Peed On:  How Veterinarians Can Keep Their Dream Job From Becoming a Nightmare While Working Less and Earning More. I can't recommend it highly enough - so make sure to check it out and don't miss the awesome bundle of goodies that he is giving away on The Veterinary Project website until the end of April!...About Michael Bugg, DVMDr. Michael Bugg is a full-time real estate investor and veterinarian with over a decade of clinical experience in veterinary medicine. After graduating from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008, he practiced as a mixed-animal veterinarian before shifting to a small-animal general practice.Like many of his colleagues, Michael struggled with the unique demands of veterinary clinical practice. Overwhelmed and burned-out, he often felt as if his career was spiraling into a nightmare. He struggled to get ahead financially despite the long hours he spent at the clinic. His entire life was impacted by his career stress—so much so that his wife gave him the moniker Miserable Mike. This, along with working amid the early 2000's financial crisis and witnessing once-retired veterinarians picking up shifts, motivated Michael to take back control of his life.In 2012, Michael and his wife, Rosalie, began building their real estate portfolio while working in their respective careers. Eventually, this real estate portfolio allowed Michael to cut back his veterinary hours to part time. In 2018, he decided to take the leap into real estate investing full-time and explore new ways to be a part of the veterinary community.Michael believes that the greatest way veterinarians can combat burnout is by taking charge of their personal finances and aligning every aspect of their lives with their veterinary vision. He is the cofounder and cohost of The Veterinary Project podcast, which aims to help other veterinarians thrive in their careers and intentionally design more joyful, fulfilling lives.Michael lives with his wife, Rosalie, daughter, Riley, and son, Ethan, in Saskatoon,Saskatchewan, Canada.Learn more at his website, The Veterinary Project or follow him on Instagram!...Resources that we mentioned or used in this episode:You're Gonna Get Peed On by Dr. Michael BuggThe 5 Minute Journal from Intelligent ChangeThe Miracle Morning by Hal ElrodSet Boundaries, Find Peace by Nedra TawaabConnect with Stacey or find more from The Whole Veterinarian!www.thewholeveterinarian.comIG @thewholeveterinarianListen on your favorite podcast player hereThank you for your time and support!

Jonathan has scaled and grown many practices and was responsible for some of the largest specialty hospitals in Western Canada. I consider Jonathan a polymath and is well versed in several disciplines, so our conversation goes in various directions. You'll enjoy this one! The backstory of how Dr. Leicht arrived at his position today and the experiences that shaped that journey. The "blue ocean" of veterinary medicine for veterinarians today. The corporate and non-corporate world of veterinary medicine - the advantages and disadvantages of each. Scaling to beyond oneself as the "doctor" of a clinic. How does ownership align interests? Staffing and payroll challenges as inflation heats up. How to think about price increases. Spending $ on facilities, equipment, and CE for the business. A graduate from the renowned Colorado State University Veterinary program, Dr. Kwane has been a California practicing vet for 22 years. He has worked in nearly every part of the profession - honing his clinical and business expertise. His journey started in '97 as an associate and emergency clinician in San Diego. From there he climbed the ranks quickly, becoming the Chief Medical Officer of Vetco Hospitals, Inc. Later he would take the reins of a struggling municipal shelter as County Veterinarian and reverse one of the worst euthanasia rates in the country. Most recently, he completed a six year stint as the Chief Veterinary Officer of American Humane, and Director of their legacy program, No Animals Were Harmed®, protecting over 100,000 animals every year around the globe on film and TV sets. Today he serves as the Chief Medical Officer and head Veterinarian for Papaya Pet Care. He has been sought for his expertise by many media outlets and major companies – including Disney, United Airlines and Sea World – for guidance to improve their animal care standards. He is known for his outspoken, compassionate, charismatic and genuine nature. Today, his career has evolved into another new journey. His true calling…helping pets and people in need. Many years ago, during a five-year tenure as a Shelter Veterinarian in a struggling, depressed area of California, Dr. Kwane began to form a true appreciation for those that struggle to afford health care for their pets. One day, on a whim, he headed downtown with some medical supplies. He set up a table near a homeless food bank, and invited anyone with a pet to be examined and treated at no charge. It was the most memorable day of his career. Afterwards, he made more consistent efforts to find Homeless people, wherever they were, and give free medical aid to their pets. Now, years later, his journey is now being chronicled on a new television series, called “The Street Vet”. It follows him as he travels the streets of California helping pets, and people alike, while retrieving some of the most remarkable and inspiring stories of sacrifice and hope. In this wide-ranging conversation with Dr. Stewart, we cover: The origination of Project Street Vet Working with the homeless and their pets Being committed to care The bond between pet and homeless person How working with the homeless changed the trajectory of Kwane's career Happiness within homelessness Hollywood or homeless: pet lovers are the same Funding veterinary care on the streets The role of pet insurance Making contributions - how can you do it? Dr. Cindy Barnes graduated from Colorado State University in 2012 with five kids in tow. In 2015, she founded Northern Arizona's first 24/7 Emergency Animal Hospital. As a practice owner, she realized that the practice management programs available on the market were antiquated, time consuming, and anything but user-friendly. This was the genesis of Shepherd Veterinary Software, founded in 2016. Dr. Barnes self-funded Shepherd until 2019 when Synergy Pet Group partnered with her to help grow the platform to where it is today. Although Dr. Barnes is no longer the CEO of Shepherd, she remains an integral part of the company's future while continuing to create new ventures in veterinary medicine, helping spur the next generation of veterinary professionals on to the same success she's enjoyed.
