GM yesterday unveiled a Chevrolet Corvette concept car with a 3D printed body. Not only is the body lighter, but additive manufacturing would allow GM to reduce the part count. According to GM Authority, the carmaker sold a little more than 33,000 Corvettes in the U.S. last year, and advancements in additive manufacturing can already suit applications with volumes in the low tens of thousands—and this one is in the future, so who knows what will be possible then, or, if there will be one. GM's UK team created the concept as part of an advanced design study that includes multiple studios currently preparing to reveal additional Corvette concepts throughout the year.

President Xi Jinping has urged the Macao Special Administrative Region to fully leverage the institutional advantages of the practice of "one country, two systems", work hard and be bold in making innovations to create a brighter future for the cherished pearl of the motherland.Xi made the remarks on Wednesday afternoon as he arrived in the SAR amid eager anticipation of people from all walks of life ahead of the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland, which falls on Friday.Xi, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, and his wife, Peng Liyuan, were warmly welcomed by hundreds of young people and representatives of the public, who flanked the red carpet waving the national and regional flags as well as colorful bouquets."Every visit to this beautiful place has been very delightful for me," Xi said in a brief speech at the airport. This is the seventh time in 25 years that Xi has set foot in Macao, which has a land area of 33.3 square kilometers and is located close to Zhuhai in Guangdong province. In 2019, President Xi attended a gathering celebrating the 20th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and the inauguration ceremony of the fifth-term government of the Macao SAR. At that time, he called on all sections of society to build on what Macao has accomplished and take all undertakings in the SAR to the next level."This time, I'm here to celebrate with fellow compatriots the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland and see Macao's new developments and new changes in these years," he said.On behalf of the central government and Chinese people of all ethnic groups, Xi extended sincere greetings and best wishes to Macao's residents, and said that Macao's development and the wellbeing of its residents is always on his mind.Over the past 25 years, the practice of "one country, two systems "with Macao characteristics has achieved success widely recognized by the world, showcasing great vitality and unique charm, Xi said.It is the glory of Macao's residents and the pride of all Chinese people that the motherland is developing rapidly in an unstoppable way with each passing day and Macao is making steady progress with a promising future, he said.Xi added that he will spend time visiting different places in Macao during his three-day stay and hold extensive and in-depth exchanges with friends in Macao to discuss the region's development.Wong Ho-ian, a student of Escola Choi Nong Chi Tai, who stood near the podium when Xi was delivering his speech, held a bright yellow "pearl" in her hands — a prop she used during the dragon and lion dance performances held to welcome the president and his wife."Although I'm only a high school student, I have learned a lot about how the motherland has supported Macao's development. I was very happy to hear him say that Macao is like'a pearl on the palm of the motherland'," Wong said, adding that the way Xi described the city struck a chord with Macao's residents.Wong Kit-cheng, a lawmaker in Macao, said that Xi's visit represents the central government's best wishes for the SAR.Wong, who also serves as the vice-president of the Women's General Association of Macao, said the president's arrival will set a clear path for Macao's development in the new era and the work of the new SAR government. "It also reflects the central government's high attention to Macao's sustained prosperity and stability," she said, adding that the motherland has always been a strong supporter of Macao.Duarte Alves, president of the General Assembly of the Macanese Youth Association, said it is a great honor to have Xi visit Macao for a gathering to mark such an important date. "Macao today is a result of the vision of the country's leaders for decades and we, as people in Macao, are very proud," he said.

We are aiming not for something, but for someone—the King of Kings, Jesus, the savior of the world. Being part of God's purposes for our world is often difficult as we run counter-cultural to the world. We get so distracted with a million other purposes rather than the one purpose God has called us to. The issue comes down to our affections. Are our affections in the things we do? Or who we follow?

Shoot us a Text.Welcome to Tuesday! Paul's hanging out at Vincue Unleashed, Kyle's at his desk and we've got news to talk about, like how the US's new rule on Chinese software in cars could affect OEMs, how Stellantis is going about its CEO search, and how Google is making Gemini a part of all Workspace accounts.Show Notes with links:The U.S. Commerce Department is considering a new rule that could block automakers like General Motors and Ford from importing vehicles made in China. The move is part of a broader effort to curb the use of Chinese technology, particularly software and hardware, due to national security concerns.GM's Buick Envision and Ford's Lincoln Nautilus, both assembled in China, would be directly impacted and the rule could also affect other automakers, including Volvo and BYD.GM sold about 22,000 Envisions, and Ford sold 17,500 Nautilus crossovers in the U.S. during the first half of 2024.Automakers would need to move production outside of China or apply for specific authorizations to continue selling affected models.Liz Cannon from the Commerce Department said, "Any vehicle manufactured in China and sold in the U.S. would fall within the prohibitions."Stellantis announced it has begun the search for a successor to CEO Carlos Tavares, with his contract expiring in January 2026. While Tavares has led the company since 2021 and made it highly profitable, recent issues in North America are driving the company to refocus. The CEO search is routine, but the company faces pressure due to declining North American sales and profits. In response, Stellantis is slashing vehicle inventories by 100,000 units by early 2025 and has already reduced 40,000 vehicles.CFO Natalie Knight said inventory and pricing discipline are key strategies to weather the EV transition, with some models, like the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Compass, seeing price cuts.Tavares has implemented aggressive cost-cutting measures, including job cuts and a plan to source 80% of parts from low-cost countries by 2028.“We are living in very difficult times where there are going to be winners and losers, and a lot about being the winner is being the last man standing," Knight saidGoogle is making its Gemini AI a central part of its Workspace productivity suite, a move that could significantly boost the chatbot's user base across various industries.Gemini AI will now be included in Workspace Business, Enterprise, and Frontline plans starting in Q4, eliminating the need for a separate Gemini add-on, streamlining AI use for Workspace customers.Google assures that Gemini won't use organizational data to train its AI model and complies with enterprise-grade privacy standards like SOC 1/2/3 and ISO 27701.Workspace Administrators will manage data storage for generated responses and user prompts, adding control and security.Google is also introducing the "Security Advisor" tool to help IT administrators protect againstHosts: Paul J Daly and Kyle MountsierGet the Daily Push Back email at https://www.asotu.com/ JOIN the conversation on LinkedIn at: https://www.linkedin.com/company/asotu/ Read our most recent email at: https://www.asotu.com/media/push-back-email

Voluntary carbon markets have been in existence for over three decades, and the industry could well be set for future growth despite a recent bump in the road. But its potential to combat climate change may never be fully realised without a rethink of some key mechanisms, industry veteran David Antonioli believes. The founding chief executive of Verra, the world's largest carbon credit certifier, sees at least two key areas where change is needed. First, the market should adopt an “end game” for emissions-saving initiatives to become economically viable without carbon financing. Someone will need to define the “positive tipping point” at which this happens in each sector – be it sustainable agriculture, reforestation, or clean energy – rally participants towards the goal, and then disallow the sale of carbon credits thereafter. Second, Antonioli thinks that project approval rules should be simplified to help initiatives get going faster. This means approvals should be based on simple lists of eligible activities, instead of complex mathematics, PhD-length reports and multiple rounds of checks that are currently required. Antonioli shared these ideas in a recent series of reports published by his advisory firm Transition Finance. He had earlier spent 15 years at Verra, and had helped mainstream many of the carbon market rules used today. He was also in the hot seat last year when Verra was accused of having rules that allowed developers to massively oversell forest carbon credits – a charge Antonioli rebutted prior to his leaving last summer. How would Antonioli's ideas work, and will the market accept them, given that its participants are still polarised on issues of integrity, scrutiny and the worth of carbon offsetting? Tune in as we discuss: - How the idea of a “new paradigm” for carbon markets came about - Who has the authority to define positive tipping points for various sustainability sectors - The unique circumstances surrounding nature-based projects - Whether the market will accept a push for efficiency, given its hunger for scrutiny - Antonioli's next steps

But Dante can't make them out . . . until the poet intervenes with an invective and the envisions these penitents as works of art.Join me, Mark Scarbrough, as we explore the hall of mirrors that Dante's theory of art is becoming even on the first terrace of PURGATORIO.Here are the segments for this episode of WALKING WITH DANTE:[01:31] My English translation of the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto X, lines 112 - 139. If you'd like to read along or drop a comment to continue the conversation, please go to my website, markscarbrough.com.[04:00] The prophetic denunciation in the center of the passage hopes for a collective redemption out of individual sin.[10:08] Dante's and Virgil's eyesights are first compromised so that they can't comprehend what they see.[12:30] Art's power to interpret the realities of what is seen leads to Dante's hall of mirrors in which art is interpreting the real while being based on the real.[18:01] Rereading the passage: PURGATORIO, Canto X, lines 112 - 139.

The setting is Velocity TX, once a cold storage complex now reimagined by Rene Dominguez and his team at the Texas Research and Technology Foundation (TRTF). They're igniting growth in the city's near East side with a focus on bioscience and healthcare. Dominguez reflects on TRTF's four-decade journey since General McDermott's ambitious vision for a research park akin to North Carolina's Research Triangle. Despite initial challenges attracting tenants due to its remote location, TRTF pivoted towards creating an urban innovation district that thrives on proximity and collaboration. Velocity TX emerged from this shift – both as a physical hub fostering startups through robust programs like accelerators and incubators, and as an economic powerhouse generating revenue streams for further development. With plans to unify under one brand, they've already attracted significant players who are pioneering stem cell manufacturing within their campus. The organization isn't stopping there; it has acquired historic properties like Allan & Allan Lumber with intentions of preserving San Antonio legacies while fueling their mission financially. As Dominguez transitions from public service to leading Velocity TX, he envisions not just an innovation district but also honoring G.J. Sutton's legacy in future developments. With strategic partnerships and community support, TRTF aims to convert 70 acres into thriving mixed-use spaces centered around health sciences – potentially anchored by military medical research consolidated under Defense Health Agency. This bold plan promises job creation and invigorated economic activity for San Antonio's east side. Velocity TX website bigcitysmalltown website
The technology known as CRISPR is considered one of modern biology’s biggest breakthroughs. It allows scientists to edit genes, similar to how you cut and paste text in a word processor. More than a decade after pioneering CRISPR, Nobel laureate Jennifer Doudna of the University of California, Berkeley, is applying it to big problems, like chronic disease and climate change.Marketplace's Lily Jamali recently met up with Doudna at Berkeley’s Innovative Genomics Institute. It's a cluster of lab stations, researchers and very loud refrigerators where CRISPR is used to edit microbiomes.
