THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta)@andoryukesuta In October 1988, twelve-year-old Bill Denbrough crafts a paper sailboat for Georgie, his six-year-old brother. Georgie sails the boat along the rainy streets of small town Derry, Maine, only to have it fall down a storm drain. As he attempts to retrieve it, Georgie sees a clown in the drain, who introduces himself as "Pennywise the Dancing Clown". Pennywise entices Georgie to come closer, then bites his arm off and drags him into the sewer. The following summer in June 1989, Bill and his friends Richie Tozier, Eddie Kaspbrak, and Stan Uris run afoul of older bullies Henry Bowers, Belch Huggins, Patrick Hockstetter, and Victor Criss. Bill, still haunted by Georgie's disappearance, calculates that his brother's body may have washed up in a marshy wasteland called the Barrens. He recruits his friends to investigate, believing Georgie may still be alive. Ben Hanscom, one of Bill's new classmates, learns that unexplained tragedies and child disappearances have plagued the town for centuries. Targeted by Bowers' gang, Ben flees into the Barrens and meets Bill's group. They find the sneaker of a missing girl named Betty Ripsom, while Patrick is killed by Pennywise while searching the sewers for Ben. Beverly Marsh, a girl bullied over her rumored promiscuity, also joins the group; both Bill and Ben develop feelings for her. Later, the group befriends orphan Mike Hanlon after rescuing him from Bowers. Each member of the group has encountered terrifying manifestations of the same menacing clown who attacked Georgie: a headless undead boy (Ben), a sink that spews blood only children can see (Beverly), a diseased and rotting leper (Eddie), a disturbing painting coming alive (Stan), Mike's parents burning alive (Mike), and a frightening phantom of Georgie (Bill). Now calling themselves "The Losers Club", they realize they are all being stalked by the same entity, which they refer to as "It". They determine that It appears as their individual worst fears, awakening every 27 years to feed on the children of Derry before resuming hibernation, and moves about by using the sewer lines, which all lead to an old stone well hidden under an abandoned house on Neibolt Street. After Pennywise attacks them, the group ventures to the house to confront It, only to be separated and terrorized. As Pennywise gloats to Bill about Georgie, the Losers regroup and Beverly impales Pennywise through the head, forcing the clown to retreat. The group flees the house and begins to splinter, with only Bill and Beverly resolute in fighting It.

You probably know the broad strokes of the Donner Party Saga: In 1846, a group of migrants traveling to California got stuck in a surprise October snow storm. After exhausting all their resources, they turn to cannibalism to survive. It's a grisly tale ... but the way it's often told is incomplete. We'll delve into the details many leave behind, and explore what happened to the Donner Party survivors after they escaped the snowy Sierra. This notorious disaster struck deep at the heart of everything California held dear — and came to represent everything it wanted to forget. Our guest for this podcast is Mike Hanlon, Founder and CEO of Abett. Abett helps employers, who pay about a trillion dollars a year for healthcare on behalf of employees, to gain control over their healthcare data and become more savvy consumers of healthcare. Abett works with some of the biggest employers in the country and this helps them dramatically reduce healthcare expenses. NextGen Venture Partners is a proud investor in Abett.
The Agenda
This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
IT's here..... Mike Hanlon is the focus of this discussion today. His character adaptation from the novel to the film is one of the biggest “mishaps” in modern cinema. Between IT Chapter One and Chapter Two there are close to five hours of perfect book portrayals. For everyone except... Mike. Another IT episode? That's right, two episodes dedicated to film adaptations in as many months. The legendary novel by Stephen King gets adapted much more competently in Andy Muschietti's very ambitious film series. If you are listening to this as a precursor to It: Chapter 2, fear not-- we announce when our discussion gets into spoiler territory. 2017 stars the magnanimous Bill Skarsgård as It / Pennywise, Jaeden Lieberher as Bill Denbrough, Jeremy Ray Taylor as Ben Hanscom, Sophia Lillis as Beverly Marsh, Finn Wolfhard as Richie Tozier, Wyatt Oleff as Stanley Uris, Jack Dylan Grazer as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Chosen Jacobs as Mike Hanlon. Not only do we discuss easter eggs, nods to the books, and these actors' great performances, but we discuss the casting process for the sequel. It: Chapter 2 stars Jessica Chastain as the adult Beverly Marsh, James McAvoy as "Big: Bill, Bill Hader as Richie "Trashmouth" Tozier, Isaiah Mustafa as Mike Hanlon, Jay Ryan as Ben "Haystack" Hanscom, James Ransone as Eddie Kaspbrak, and Andy Bean as Stanley "Slice 'Em Open" Uris. We discuss the film, our impressions, and where the franchise can go from here. Director, Andy Muschietti, is actively campaigning to do a supercut of both films combined, returning the deleted scenes, and even adding new ones. So yes, it is wholly possible that Slashers will do yet another episode on It... Beep beep. This week's "Hidden Track" is Moon Tooth with their song Trust. IT Chapter Two Makes a Swift Return to Derry IT Chapter Two is back and the wait to see how it all ends is over. Right from the beginning, director Andy Muschietti drops the audience back into the atmospheric Derry with an unsettlingly sequence that sets a dark tone. This dynamic opening merely hints at the twists, turns, quips, and mayhem to come for the remaining 2 hours and 49 minutes. It's twenty-seven years later and the Loser's Club made a pledge they're going to need to keep because the boogeyman is back with a vengeance (punny I know). (L-r) BILL HADER as Richie Tozier, JESSICA CHASTAIN as Beverly Marsh, JAMES MCAVOY as Bill Denbrough, JAMES RANSONE as Eddie Kaspbrak, ISAIAH MUSTAFA as Mike Hanlon, and JAY RYAN as Ben Hascomb This second installment takes pains to quickly reacquaint the audience with the main characters and then draw them back to Derry. For purposes of cohesiveness between the two films, this makes sense. But from a storytelling perspective, the truncated glimpse into their lives doesn't fully establish a connection. Adult Bill (James McAvoy), Beverly (Jessica Chastain), Eddie (James Ransone), Richie (Bill Hader), Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), and Stanley (Andy Bean) needed deeper development to balance with their child counterparts. JEREMY RAY TAYLOR as young Ben Hascomb, JACK DYLAN GRAZER as young Eddie Kaspbrak, SOPHIA LILLIS as young Beverly Marsh, WYATT OLEFF as young Stanley Uris, JAEDEN MARTELL as young Bill Denbrough, FINN WOLFHARD as young Richie Tozier and CHOSEN JACOBS as young Mike Hanlon Under Delivering on the Plot's Momentum The majority of the film capitalizes on flashbacks and uses a short (and at times unnecessary) scavenger hunt through Derry to set the stage for the big showdown and allows needed memories to unfold. But, these flashbacks once again put the emotional heavy-lifting on the shoulders of the pre-teen versions of this crew. It makes for intense, and at turns, hilarious encounters with IT and the supernatural landmines seeded throughout Derry. The downside to this tactic is the rhythm to certain encounters started to become predictable and the resultant story felt more than a little haphazard. Chapter Two gets dark quickly The story direction for the second installment unveils more sinister Pennywise (Bill Skarsgård). Skarsgård once again proves himself worthy of the Pennywise mantle with every word and onscreen moment. This time around, Pennywise is murderous and fully invested in the mind games that are his stock and trade. These moments are dark and twisted in good ways. Although Skarsgård brings his A-game, there are times, however, that the action around him feels forced and out of sync with the needs of the story. You'll laugh more than you thought, recognize some hat-tips to the Stephen King universe along the way and wish for a better explanation of IT's motivations even after the credits roll. BILL SKARSGÅRD as Pennywise in New Line Cinema’s horror thriller "IT CHAPTER TWO,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release. But overall, the tenor of Chapter Two is a great foil for Chapter One, it's very enjoyable, albeit not as scary as hoped for by some of the MTR crew (we know, we go problems), and creative use of the source material. Not everything lives up to the promise of Chapter One but as far as mainstream horror movies go this one is still a good bet. IT Chapter Two may be flawed but it's still a solid take across both films and a well-done conclusion to the story Muschietti set out to tell. Kriss, Phenom, and Ro had thoughts, feelings and "what-ifs" all over the place in their spoiler-free chat. Like what you hear? Subscribe so you don't miss an episode! Head on over to www.xlvacx.com to check them out. Thanks! We apologize in advance for the sound quality of this episode at times, as we had an issue with the Skype connection. This episode we are joined by Brendan Foley of Black Sun Dispatches and our first returning guest John Wren of The Mandate (both of which are available at www.cinepunx.com) to help us tackle Andy Muschietti’s recent cinematic interpretation of Stephen King’s magnum opus: It. We begin by talking about what horror related things we had done lately. Brendan talks about his recent rewatching of An American Werewolf In London for Cinapse’s Two Cents feature, and John talks about his rewatching of the Evil Dead trilogy. Justin is lame as hell and hasn’t done anything, but Liam discusses watching Paranorman with his daughter! We open up by discussing our first introduction to Stephen King’s novel and the 1990 miniseries. Justin has already talked about his feelings on It in this piece he wrote for Cinepunx and the review he wrote for It as well as the episode of Test Patterns he wrote into the matter, so we don’t need to hear from him at all on the matter. Brendan talks about reading the book for the first time in middle school and how it was his introduction to horror, but also admits to not revering the book the way many King fans (like Justin) do. He discusses the shortcomings of some of King’s longer works, and how often King does best when he’s writing short and streamlined works. John talks about how he read the book relatively early on as well, as it was introduced to him by an uncle who got him into Stephen King. He talks about how in his opinion It is the best representation of Stephen King, and how the book actually magnifies many of King’s strength as a writer. Justin briefly talks about how the weird cosmic Lovecraftian stuff at the end of It was actually what sold him totally on the book, and how Bill Denbrough’s dream at the end of leaving Derry for the first time is an incredibly powerful scene for him. There is some discussion on King’s style vs. Lovecraft, in that King falls short of Lovecraft in that he explains too much and it loses some of it’s impact. Liam tells a very tender and personal story on his introduction to It that you need to listen to and won’t be summarized here. He also talks about how he realized only recently how deeply the book affected him as a person. There’s talk about how Muschietti’s version of the film failed to grasp the deep racism that is present in King’s novel and how that racism is essential to Henry’s relationship with Mike Hanlon. We begin the actual discussion of the movie with John talking about how this movie went above and beyond his expectations. John briefly discusses his distaste for remakes, and how Muschietti went about remaking It the way they ought to be done. We talk about how John came around on this movie, and how one of his biggest problems with the film was the lack of Eddie Corcoran’s death. We talk briefly about the effectiveness of Eddie’s death in the book. We talk about some of the stuff Muschietti changed from the book, especially how Stan is kind of the focus of It’s activity and how that may use that focus to explain why Stan makes the choices he may or may not make in chapter 2. Muschietti’s choice in keeping Bill Skarsgard separate from the Losers in order to harbor a true fear in their reactions in coming face to face with Pennywise for the first time.
Most people will recognize Stephen King's It as the one about the killer clown. Which it is. But at 1100 pages, it has to be more than that, you know? In his dedication King writes: “Fiction is the truth inside the lie”—which, I'll admit, I still don't fully get—but that's nevertheless a good place to begin investigating one of It's running themes: extracting the truth from the lies, particularly the ones we tell ourselves. Centered around a group of raggle-taggle tweens, It is a story about growing up and facing fears, about selectively remembering (and discarding) our early painful memories. What the characters develop, as their first line of defense against the killer clown in question, is an elaborate but ultimately fragile method of narrative construction that carries them into adulthood: Mike Hanlon, one of the story's protagonists, explains, “We lie best when we lie to ourselves.” It's true for all of us. With the recent deluge of social studies concerning #confirmationbias, and with the self-righteousness of American politics cropping up wherever we look—not to mention moral dispatches from Starbucks cups—there's never been a better time to take a second glance at the stories we tell ourselves. If spun right, “taking control of your narrative” can sound just as liberating as “taking a trip to Aruba”; but the late David Carr, in his memoir, The Night of the Gun, illustrates the exhausting side of this self-embossed coin: “You spread versions of yourself around, giving each person the truth he or she needs—you need, actually—to keep them at one remove.” So let's get all our narratives in one place and talk about them, Friday, April 28, 3:30PM, at the 10th Annual Mockingbird Conference. We'll discuss some of the best stories told by liars and madmen, including some by me and some by you. And—of course—we'll talk about the great, final page-turner that illuminates the truth about us and pulls us into it, not as tragic heroes but as pardoned villains.
