This event is part of Critical Conversations, a new series on the age of misinformation by Intelligence Squared and Sage & Jester, hosted by Sophia Smith Galer. Have you ever clashed with someone on social media or even a loved one? Conversations can easily escalate in a time where everyone is consuming different media with wildly different messaging. At Truth Hurts: From Conflict to Connection, we tackled the most divisive topics in our day-to-day lives and how we can all become better conversationalists. How can we productively engage with those who have opposing views? How can we de-escalate emotionally-charged conversations? And how can we engage others to create a more ethical, kind and sustainable world? We dove into clever strategies for critical thinking and taught you how to dodge sneaky traps; whether you're scrolling through your newsfeed or navigating tricky conflicts. We also explored techniques for managing emotions and sparking meaningful, empathy-driven conversations that actually get somewhere. Social cohesion researcher Dr Julia Ebner was in conversation with host Sophia Smith Galer live at the Pleasance Theatre in London. Learn more about your ad choices. This event was part of Critical Conversations, a new series on the age of misinformation by Intelligence Squared and Sage & Jester, hosted by Sophia Smith Galer. Sometimes the best way to expose a lie is to laugh at it. Satire is a force to be reckoned with in any democracy and artists are essential in shedding light on the truth. Comedy has long been a way to bring difficult conversations to the fore, and to challenge narratives. At Tricks, Trolls and LOLs, find out how humour and creative expression can serve as a counterbalance to misinformation; how satire can dismantle it, why authoritarian regimes fear comedians, and how art can be a powerful antidote to propaganda. In May 2025, we were joined by host Sophia Smith Galer and comedian Rachel Parris at the Pleasance Theatre in London for the first event in our our Critical Conversations series, in partnership with Sage & Jester. This week we welcome the supremely talented Georgie Bailey to Starving Artists. George is a playwright, poet, producer and co-founder of Chewboy Productions. I have always admired Georgie as a writer since seeing the wonderfully surreal 'Tethered'. Not only is his work moving, truthful and often absurd (in the best of ways!), but I think he challenges the conventions and form of theatre itself in many of his pieces. His next project is 'these words that'll linger like ghosts till the day I drop down dead' at The Pleasance Theatre, Islington and I'M IN IT!! Please come along and support. 13th-24th June, tickets can be found here: https://www.pleasance.co.uk/event/these-words-thatll-linger-ghosts-till-day-i-drop-down-dead Art of the Week: Figure 8 by Elliott Smith (Song) - Georgie's pick The Madness of Grief by Reverend Richard Cole (Book) - Dan's pick Artist Spotlight of the Week: Max Porter (Writer) - Georgie's pick Steven Bartlett at Diary of a CEO (Podcast Host) - Dan's pick Georgie's Artistic Role Model: Chris Sonnet (Artistic Director) If you enjoy this podcast then please consider supporting us on Patreon patreon.com/user?u=30855788 or Buy Me a Coffee buymeacoffee.com/starvingart . Schools in the Indian state of Karnataka reopened yesterday after protests broke out in response to the state government trying to ban women wearing the hijab in classrooms. The issue gained widespread attention after videos and images of girls wearing hijab getting heckled while being denied entry to school went viral. Protestors took to the streets to condemn the decision, and women have marched in solidarity in cities across India. Divya Arya, BBC woman's affairs journalist and Sumayyah Khan, a law student at the Aligarh Muslim University in Uttar Pradesh join Krupa Padhy. It's been announced that children aged between 5 and 11 in all four nations of the UK are to be offered a low dose of the covid vaccine. Children are at a much lower risk of becoming severely ill from a Covid infection, so the health benefits of vaccinating them are smaller than in other age-groups. Also, many will have some protection from already having caught the virus. The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), which advises governments across the UK, have been weighing up the evidence for immunising five to 11-year-olds. It concluded vaccination should go ahead to prevent a "very small number of children from serious illness and hospitalisation" in a future wave of Covid. Dr Elizabeth Mann, an immunologist at the Lydia Becker Institute at the University of Manchester and Naomi Grimley, BBC Global Health Correspondent discuss. Isabelle Farah is a British Lebanese actor, comedian, and writer. Following an undergraduate degree in French and Film Studies, she trained as a classical actress. She started doing stand up comedy in 2017 and has since gigged across the UK and internationally. Her one woman comedy show, Ellipsis, about grief, authenticity and punchlines, enjoyed a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Fringe last summer, and is currently on at the Pleasance Theatre in London. She explains the personal event that inspired it. New research funded by the Home Office has found that a tenth of domestic abuse cases involve parents being attacked by their children. These findings are based on almost 67,000 reports investigated by Lancashire police, of which 7,171 involved a child over 16 abusing a parent or parental figure. The reports show that abuse was more likely to be intimidating or coercive behaviour than outright violence and the age of the abuser averaged at 27 years old. Nicola Graham-Kevan is a professor of criminal justice psychology at the University of Central Lancashire and led the research. Kat Wilson is a senior support worker at Woman's Aid. Did you know there is a LGBTQ+ homelessness crisis? This week, Thomas has been meeting the Vicky Moran (writer and director) and James Haymer, who plays Alf in 'No Sweat' which has been running at the Pleasance Theatre in London and is shortly set to hit other theatres around the country. The play examines the story of three friends who find themselves homeless and staying in a sauna for shelter, examining the nature of an invisible crisis in the UK.From the play's website: "It's unseen. No one's telling the stories. You don't see us on the streets because saunas and Grindr mean that gay men don't have to be homeless in the traditional sense. It's all hidden."Working together with young LGBTQ+ ex/homeless people in London, Vicky Moran's new play shines a light on a forgotten generation of homeless youth.Combining real stories, verbatim interview clips and an original score, No Sweat reveals stories from within the world of gay saunas - a common place for young homeless people to seek accommodation. In a world where stability is a second from slipping through your fingers, austerity combined with prejudice sees young people putting themselves at risk all too often. We invite you inside our very own sauna. Here you'll meet Tristan, Alf and Charlie who will show you the ropes when it comes to survival. But how long can they battle against the system? No Sweat is an examination of friendship, family and the fight for recognition.Welcome to Up The Arts, a weekly podcast for those proud to be be involved in theatre, music, art and literature in the LGBTQ+ world! Another day, another crime solved by our favourite drunk detectives in front of a packed Pleasance Theatre. This week actor, writer and intrepid traveller, Rebecca Root grabbed a gin or 3 and joined the ranks and cracked a case only an escapologist could see their way out of. This week's historic case involves not just one, but TWO famous figures from history, which could be still arguing beyond the grave. To round things-off a member of the audience shares a crime which left everyone in the room a little slack-jawed. Catch Drunk Women Solving Crime at the Edinburgh Fringe 2019, tickets (and merch) available from: drunkwomensolvingcrime.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Comedian Jayde Adams joined in the detective work and shared a story of a house of ill repute which could be screwing the chance of a decent inheritance. The gang meanwhile crack a case which is as cold as an ice bucket full of prosecco AND as always, a member of the audience gets a crime from their lives solved - you're welcome! The Drunk Women were unaware they were inviting sleuthing royalty on the show when comedian Thanyia Moore joined in the fun at The Pleasance Theatre, where Thanyia revealed that her mum is 'the black Jessica Fletcher!"And we also find out that if Thanyia and Catie's mothers joined forces, they would be the most feared crime fighting duo the world has ever known. This week's case involves a writer whose own detecting skills could never be described as 'elementary' and an audience member shares the time a crime quite literally slid into her DMs.To buy tickets to Drunk Women Solving Crime live at Edinburgh go to drunkwomensolrime.com and whilst you're there, why not visit the merch shop? Best known as Coronation Street’s Cilla Battersby-Brown, actress Wendi Peters has been treading the boards for 30 years. Wendi is currently playing Sylvie in Call Me Vicky at the Pleasance Theatre in north London. We chatted in her dressing room about how she started out improvising on stage at the Piccadilly Theatre when it was a club on a Saturday night in the 80s, how she went from being a dresser on the West End production of Into the Woods to playing in it as part of Sondheim’s 75th birthday celebrations, and how Coronation Street stopped her being seen for certain roles. Call Me Vicky is on at the Pleasance Theatre until 9th March. Tickets are available here. Don’t forget to subscribe and follow the podcast on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The Drunk Women held court in The Pleasance Theatre for this episode, joined by a rather well-oiled crowd and the one and only comedian, actor and writer extraordinaire - Olivia Lee! Olivia proved to be not only rather adept at getting-to-grips with a true crime, but she also knows her way around a bottle of gin - our kind of sleuth. The case itself is one of towering proportions (when you listen you'll realise that was quite clever) and it's got a dodgy Count, which seems to be a staple in the world of historic true crime. Plus we get another terrifying insight into life on The Isle Of Wight, thanks to a plucky audience member - sacré bleu! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
As this episode lands on Boxing Day, The Drunk Women wanted to put something festive in your stocking, so thought you might like more London Hughes! Not only is she back by popular demand, but she's live and unleashed in another episode recorded at the Pleasance Theatre. Taylor hosts this week, with a crime that proves staying in on New Year's Eve is definitely the safest option and although we didn't think London could top the last crime story she told us, somehow she manages it....As it's Christmas, the serving suggestion with this episode is a large glass of Baileys. Happy Christmas from The Drunk Women, thanks for all your support so far! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Drunk Women went back to the Pleasance Theatre in London, armed with a crate of gin, a little festive cheer and comedian Suzi Ruffell - who also lent her considerable sleuthing abilities to the occasion. Guest Suzi kicks things off with a crime against mindfulness, whilst host Hannah presents a case which will never let you view Santa in the same way. To round things off an audience member shares a past mystery, which had it happened in more recent times would have had a VERY different ending! Suzi is on tour February, March, April & May 2019 - for tickets visit: suziruffell.com. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The Drunk Women thought it was high-time they had a night out and decided to solve the case of The Yorkshire Witch in front of a sellout crowd at The Pleasance Theatre in London. They were joined by legendary comic and top detective (she brought a notebook), Jenny Eclair! Jenny told us about the time she got conned by a taxi driver and car jacked at knife point. Plus the gang get to the bottom of a very polite crime from a member of the audience- making him the first man to appear on the podcast!Don't forget to like, subscribe, and send us any crimes you want us to solve in an iTunes review or tweet us @drunkwomenpod See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Nick Helm is a man so rock'n'roll the discipline is not even big enough for him. A fine musician - in fact his latest album, Nick Helm is Fucking Amazing is out this month - he's also made his name as a comedian and actor, providing heavy entertainment to the masses. His star has shone brightest in hit comedy Uncle, in which he plays a layabout musician trying to make it big and he discusses how nerves could've killed the whole show off. Ahead of his All Killer Some Filler live show at the Kentish Town Forum in London, I quizzed him on the music he couldn't live without. A massive film buff, Nick tells of his love of Kevin Costner and what his most dubious video shop rental was as we meet at the Pleasance Theatre.
