Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  Today we talk about the great Debra Winger! Our B-Sides include Legal Eagles, Betrayed, The Sheltering Sky, and Forget Paris. Our guest is the inestimable Murtada Elfadl, Culture Writer, Critic, and Film Curator. We discuss Winger's stratospheric rise to stardom, her indescribable performance in Terms of Endearment, and her (unfair?) reputation for being “difficult.” There's also plenty of discussion about Rosanna Arquette's documentary Searching for Debra Winger, a film in which Arquette speaks with many famous actresses about aging in Hollywood. The motivation of the piece was partly motivated by Winger's exodus from the business for over half a decade in the mid-1990s. There's also conversation about Shirley MacLaine's 1984 Oscars speech, Tom Berenger being deeply proud of Betrayed and his performance in the film, and all those NBA players that appear in Forget Paris. Janet Maslin and Roger Ebert's superb reviews of Betrayed are mentioned, as is Debra's perfect laugh. Finally, we touch on when Raquel Welch sued MGM and won for being fired from Cannery Row (Winger replaced her in the role), Winger's dropping out of A League of Their Own after Madonna was cast (bonus Patti LuPone on Evita clip here!), Melanie Griffith and William Hurt being director Bernardo Bertolucci's first choices for the leads in The Sheltering Sky, and Debra Winger's infamous Watch What Happens Live episode.

Hello! Although we're still taking it easy for the summer, we couldn't let a white savior movie this blatant pass us by. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (yes you have to say the whole thing) is the story of a soldier so racked by guilt after his Afghan translator saves his life, that he goes back guns blazing to bring him and his family to America. It's the grounded and subtle storytelling Guy Ritchie is known for.  Jordan sat down with culture critic and podcast host Murtada Elfadl (The Izzy and Murtada Picture Show) to discuss just how crazy it is that Dar Salim's character dragged Jake Gyllenhaal 62 miles on foot, how the hell you make an apolitical movie about Afghanistan, and much more.  You can find Murtada on Twitter at @ME_Says and read his work all over at places like AV Club and Variety. He also helps put on NewFest, an LGBTQ+ festival in New York which will be starting today! Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars and not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones they made in between. Today we bring in a heavy hitter - Murtada Elfadl of Sundays With Cate - to discuss the most-accomplished actress in the history of Hollywood: Meryl Streep. Among her TWENTY-ONE Oscar nominations, there are 4 B-Sides we dig up to examine: The Seduction Of Joe Tynan, Falling In Love, Before and After, and Prime. We marvel at the cultural moment in which Alan Alda was a HUGE movie star, how handsome Bobby De Niro is in Falling In Love, how Alfred Molina nearly saves Before and After, and the wasted potential of Prime. Also noted is the limited, impressive career of director Ulu Grosbard and the propensity for movie studios to adapt provocative, best-selling novels in the ‘90s. It's impossible to talk 1982 film AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN without discussing its electric female lead (and the person who "started it" for Murtada's love of actresses) Debra Winger. We talk the gender politics in Hollywood, acting styles, Sylvester Stallone's wooden delivery of weird awards showbanter and the fascinating and singular career of Debra Winger. (Richard Gere, who also appears in the film, is briefly discussed as well.)We also talk race in Hollywood, specifically Black actors and the Oscars. From Lou Gossett Jr.'s historic win for AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN in 1982 as the first person ever to win Best Supporting Actor, all the way up til now and what Murtada hopes the future holds. An interesting, informative and funny discussion of formative movie star fandom.Read Murtada's work at The Film Experience (http://thefilmexperience.net/blog/author/murtada)Support the show (https://twitter.com/YouStarteditpod)
