As the end of 2023 approaches, Not A Bomb has decided to go out with a bang. On this week's show, we discuss not one but two bombs by the same director, Guy Ritchie. This was a rough year at the box office for Mr. Ritchie. Both Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre and Guy ritchie's The Covenant didn't make their production budget back during their theatrical run. Critics definately liked one movie over the other. And audiences, who did see the films, liked both. We couldn't take on two films in one show without some help. Nate, friend and family member, jumps on to share his thoughts on Guy Ritchie's filmography and help us decide if these two films deserve more attention. If that wasn't enough, we also reveal our 5 best and worst films of the year. Brad followed the instructions. Troy did his own thing. Nate gives everybody a shock with his take on Jackie Chan's Ride On. You are going to get a lot of recommendations from these lists! We also want to take a minute and thank all of you for an amazing year and all of the wonderful support. We are truly humbled by our community and appreciate all the feedback. Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jason Statham, Aubrey Plaza, Josh Harnett, Cary Elwes, Bugzy Malone, Eddie Marsan, and Hugh Grant.Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is directed by Guy Ritchie and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Dar Salim, Antony Starr, Alexander Ludwig, Emily Beecham, and Jonny Lee Miller. Also, this is the last week to let Not A Bomb know your best/worst films of 2023. Head over to Not A Bomb and submit your choice! If you want to leave feedback or suggest a movie bomb, please drop us a line at NotABombPod@gmail.com or Contact Us - here. 2023's Guy Ritchie's The Govenant During the war in Afghanistan, a local interpreter risks his own life to carry an injured sergeant across miles of grueling terrain. We differ on this movie, it's a good war movie but it's not as much of a Guy Ritchie movie as we may have wanted. There's lots of fun dicussion and differing oppinions. Cheapseat Reviews the podcast that explores the Hollywood film industry for the greater good.
It would be easy to assume that Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is both a war film and a retelling of real-life events, but neither is the case. Loosely based on the experiences of American soldiers and their interpreters in Afghanistan before the withdrawal of US troops in 2021, the film follows fictional Master Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his interpreter Ahmed Abdullah (Dar Salim) as they forge a reluctant bond hunting IEDs as part of a US Army task force, and later through a grueling survival ordeal as they're pursued across kilometers of desert by unwavering Taliban militia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=02PPMPArNEQ&t=83s... Guy Ritchie cowrote, produced and directed this war thriller that stars Jake Gyllenhaal & Dar Salim. The movie set during 2018 in the Middle East. After many Middle Eastern soldiers and or refugees join the US Army as interpreters, one is dispatched to a team that is looking for a warehouse that may be holding a explosives cache. The staff Sargent of the group is a little apprehensive about this new interpreter but is put to the ultimate test after routine inspection goes very wrong. This movie was slated for 2021 but due to studio issues and buyouts, the film was released in theaters during the summer of 2023 and then made available on Prime Video in September of the same year. The studio added Ritchie's name to title to avoid confusion with the 2006 film, “The Convenant”.

Aber was davon stimmt denn jetzt eigentlich? Filme.”

In this episode, Kade and Gray sit down to react to the movie they just watched, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant. The Covenant, a 2023 American war film, was written and directed by the English filmmaker Guy Ritchie. The movie is about a local interpreter working with the US military during the war in Afghanistan who goes through hell to save the almost dead Sergeant, John Kinley, across miles of grueling terrain. After being saved, John Kinley has a debt he feels must be paid back. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/crwncinema/support

Surely the dumbest name for a movie ever, given this unexpectedly superb step out of his comfort zone for Mr Ritchie, can only be hamstrung by wedding itself to his signature style. Both leads Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim are excellent, but the shock is Ritchie getting the tone so right for a serious post Gulf war film, sonically and visually - it's closer to Lone Survivor than anything in his filmography. I once derided him but the last four films are his best run.
Today, RNZ's Sam Hollis reviews The Flash and Guy Ritchie's The Covenant.
Guy Ritchie's The Covenant – yes, he has put his name in the title of the film During the war in Afghanistan, a local interpreter risks his own life to carry an injured sergeant across miles of gruelling terrain. Extraction 2 Back from the brink of death, commando Tyler Rake embarks on a dangerous mission to save a ruthless gangster's imprisoned family. The Covenant (also known as Guy Ritchie's The Covenant internationally) stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a Special Forces sergeant who is saved by his interpreter, Ahmed played by Dar Salim, after a mission in Afghanistan goes awry. The Covenant appears to be one of a wave of films that attempt to tackle the Western withdrawal and the subsequent Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. Its themes include loss and brotherhood through combat but does the film live up to the hype? Join us to find out. Follow us on Twitter @FightingOnFilm and on Facebook. Another jam-packed edition of the freshly award-losing Empire Podcast this week, folks, with three separate interviews, and four incredible guests. First, Chevalier star Kelvin Harrison Jr. talks French accents and violins with Neel Bhatt (making his pod interview debut!). Then, Eva Longoria — director of Flamin' Hot and possessor of one of the best laughs in the business — sits down on Zoom with James White to talk about her feature film directorial debut. And then Chris Hewitt is visited in studio by Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts stars Anthony Ramos and Dominique Fishback, and gets one of them hopelessly addicted to M&S Phizzy Pigtails. Be warned: there are sounds of chewing during this interview, which we know puts some people off. Forewarned is forearmed and all that. Then, on either side of those interviews, Chris is joined by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer to discuss which film director owns the 90s, the week's movie news (such as it is), and review Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts, Chevalier, Flamin' Hot, and Guy Ritchie's The Covenant. Enjoy!
James Cameron-Wilson takes Simon Rose through the UK box office figures, up 68%, with Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse taking a whopping £9.1m over its opening weekend. Despite the success of this, the longest animated movie ever, James hated it, praying for it to end within 10 minutes of its 140 minute running time. At #5 is The boogeyman, a clichéd and unscary haunted house horror. To his surprise James found Guy Ritchie's The Covenant on Amazon Prime, a character-driven two-handed war movie, impressive and moving. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Hello! Although we're still taking it easy for the summer, we couldn't let a white savior movie this blatant pass us by. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant (yes you have to say the whole thing) is the story of a soldier so racked by guilt after his Afghan translator saves his life, that he goes back guns blazing to bring him and his family to America. It's the grounded and subtle storytelling Guy Ritchie is known for. Jordan sat down with culture critic and podcast host Murtada Elfadl (The Izzy and Murtada Picture Show) to discuss just how crazy it is that Dar Salim's character dragged Jake Gyllenhaal 62 miles on foot, how the hell you make an apolitical movie about Afghanistan, and much more. You can find Murtada on Twitter at @ME_Says and read his work all over at places like AV Club and Variety. He also helps put on NewFest, an LGBTQ+ festival in New York which will be starting today! Go to NewFest.org for more! As always, you can find us on Twitter at @White_pod and at whitepeoplewontsaveyoupod@gmail.com More coming soon, including info on live watches, reviews, and more fun things. Happy Pride, and we'll see you soon!

DON'T PANIC! Hello friends! We've been at this thing for almost 2 years now, no skips, and we love doing the show. However, it's a lot of work on our end putting things together on our own. So in the interest of not burning out and keeping things going, we'll be taking a little summer break. DON'T PANIC What this means is there won't be any regular episodes as you know them in June and July, but that doesn't mean we're ghosting you. Welcome to another episode of Filmmaker Compass Podcast! To Statt, D-Man, and CP talk about watching Star Wars Return of the Jedi, back on the big screen, for the 40th Anniversary! An impromptu session of Total Rewind follows as they discuss how well the movie holds up. Then CP talks about recent releases like Guy Ritchie's The Covenant and the new Netflix special Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once and Always! Then D-man looks at Hoosier Movies or movies that take place in Indiana. The guys discuss how accurately those films reflect the Indiana that they know. Finally, the episode ends by asking, "What's in a name" - well, title. What makes a great movie title? What are some of the guy's favorites? What are your favorite movies titles?
Before we get started, wanted to share a cool little thing I learned literally yesterday. Typically at a movie theater—or, at least, the movie theaters I've been to—the handicapped seats are just empty spots where you can fit a wheelchair. At the Crystal City Alamo Drafthouse, they're actual chairs that can be taken out to provide a space for wheelchairs. There's a cool little animation on the site and everything. I bring this up because there are only 11 seats left for Across the Movie Aisle's live show on May 16th (two weeks from today!) and they're almost all in that handicapped row. I think it's okay for the non-wheelchaired to pick them up at this point, given that it's basically a sell-out show? On this week's episode, Sonny Bunch (The Bulwark), Alyssa Rosenberg (The Washington Post), and Peter Suderman (Reason) talk about the WGA strike. Why are writers hitting the picket line? What don't studios want to give up? What will the industry look like after this work stoppage? All that and more during this discussion. (Full disclosure: we taped this Monday afternoon, more or less assuming that the strike would happen.) Then we reviewed Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, an almost shockingly earnest war movie from the king of Brit-gangster movies. We'll talk more Guy Ritchie on the bonus episode this week. And speaking of bonus episodes: last Friday's got lost in the shuffle, so we just posted it this morning. You can listen here if you're a paid-up member of Bulwark+. And if you aren't, you should be!

Happy new podcast day listeners! For Reel Film Nerds Episode #320 we chat about a very serious war film, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. Not serious topics include 420, we have a brand new giveaway (hint it's Scream VI), and Champagne or Champagne of Beers? War is always a difficult topic to cover in any medium. Film, especially a really well done war film shows the horrors, brotherhood, and victims of war to those of us who will never experience such tragedy. Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is one of those war films that sparks a conversation. Centered on the Afghanistan War, specifically the bond between soldiers of different countries, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant opens the viewers minds and eyes to bear witness to the duty and love soldiers have for one another even from different countries. Jake Gyllenhaal does an incredible job. He is a fantastic actor with a huge range and has starred in war films before. Dar Salim though was on another level. He steals the spotlight from Jake and he deserves it. What an incredible job he does as Ahmed, an Afghanistan translator. The shots, cinematography, and stunts were all top notch but not award winning. The story though, inspired by true events, not based on a true story, is just incredible. It really makes this film what it is. Matt and Mike both agree Guy Ritchie's The Covenant is a must see film. They both award it 4 out of 5 Reels. Next week we continue with war movies with our chat on Sisu that takes place towards the end of WWII. Don't forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #10 at the end of this incredible podcast. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week! You know those mixed nuts people serve at parties? There are several varieties in there and although you may think the hosts aren't being very original you appreciate that there's something else to eat other than devilled eggs. And the nuts go very well with whatever you're drinking. Well this week's movies and shows are also a very wide variety and there's something for everyone. And much like the nuts, we can be very salty at times. First we've got "Guy Ritchie's The Covenant" It stars Jake Gyllenhaal and takes place during the war in Afghanistan, when a local interpreter risks his own life to carry an injured sergeant across miles of grueling terrain. Then we have the horror/comedy "Renfield." It stars Nicholas Hoult as Dracula's henchman and inmate at the lunatic asylum for decades who longs for a life away from the Count, his various demands, and all of the bloodshed that comes with them. And Nicolas Cage plays Dracula - c'mon! There's also the historical drama "Chevalier" which is based on the true story of composer Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, the illegitimate son of an African slave and a French plantation owner, who rises to heights in French society as a composer before an ill-fated love affair. For you streaming show fans we look at the second seasons of "Barry," "Single Drunk Female" as well as "Obsession." And for history buffs we've got "War Sailor." There's a lot to feast on, so listen in!This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4137244/advertisement

Decades after he first broke out with “Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrels,” film fans probably think they know what a Guy Ritchie film is going to look and feel like. Well, when you bring Jake Gyllenhaal into the equation, Ritchie throws all of those preconceived notions out of the window, and you end up with “The Covenant,” a no-nonsense war film about a life-altering debt and the lengths someone will go to shed a curse, of sorts. And in this episode of The Playlist Podcast, Jake Gyllenhaal and Guy Ritchie discuss their new war film and the interesting relationship that forms the heart of the story. Guy Ritchie's “The Covenant” stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a highly decorated soldier, Sergeant John Kinley, who finds himself trying to fight for his life alongside his interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim). Through the struggle to survive, the two form an unlikely bond. But when Ahmed finds himself held captive, Kinley has to risk it all to pay back this enormous debt and save his war partner. It's a Guy Ritchie film that sheds a lot of the filmmaker's hallmarks and really is a lean, sometimes brutal story about a life-altering bond between two people. In our discussion with Gyllenhaal and Ritchie, the director talked about tackling a war film for the first time and what drew him to “The Covenant,” in particular, among many other various topics. Here we are again, it's like Mike and Matt do these things every week. For this week's pod Matt and Mike, and Ma Hinshaw and Matt, chat about the latest Nicolas Cage and Nicholas Hoult film Renfield. Not Dracula topics include Moviepass is getting better, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and putting kids to work. Dracula has been a horror icon for generations and Renfield finally gives Nicolas Cage his chance at playing the mythical creature, and he kills it. Renfield is like two films smashed into one. You have the story of Renfield, Dracula's familiar, and his struggles to confront his narcissistic boss and grow as a person. Then you have the story of a cop trying to live up to her father's reputation and take down a large crime family while combating cop corruption. They are both great stories but are smashed together to create an odd script for Renfield. The acting is fantastic and not just from Nic Cage but also Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina, and Ben Schwartz. The sets are colorful and creative, but the action and gore is where this film really shines. It's just so much fun and over the top it reminds you of a video game. Matt and Mike both agree Renfield is a blast and worth a watch in the theaters. They both award the film 3 out of 5 Reels. Next week we check out the new release Guy Ritchie's The Covenant starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Dar Salim. Don't forget to check out Ma Hinshaw Loses Her Cookies Episode #9 at the end of RFN Episode #319. Thank you for listening and we will chat with you next week! Join us for TPP 148 as we warp into The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Jake Gyllenhaal tries to turn things around in Guy Ritchie's The Covenant, and make sure you say Guy Ritchie's The Covenant and not just The Covenant. Nicolas Cage is Dracula in Renfield and as usual he looks like he is hijacking the movie with his acting choices. Dungeons & Dragons reboots itself into theatres with Chris Pine giving it some clout and some charm. Sisu, the finnish John Wick arrives in the five hole with some Turbo Kid style violence against Nazi's because once you establish Nazi's are involved you can pretty much do anything you want to them.
