This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit paulpodolsky.substack.comMan has always asked the question: what is it all about?J. Krishnamurti, 1969Stories are intrinsic to being human, a survival mechanism. Some forms of story—poetry—can be created virtually for free and others—movie making—cost millions of dollars. But just because we need something, doesn't mean it's easy money. What's a good business? Monopolies (toll bridges), massive economies of scale (big tech), products people are addicted to (cigarettes), and services you are legally obligated to buy (insurance) all offer good cash flow even if some of them, like cigarettes, are terrible for you. Making movies is far cooler than any of these businesses but faces a structural challenge. Supply is unlimited and demand (our time) is fixed. That's why I wanted to talk to Mike D'Alto, the founder of First Gen Content, a film finance and production company that has made the films Bird, Catch the Fair One, Call Jane, and On Swift Horses. Mike co-founded the company with three others: Claude Amadeo, Randal Sandler, and Chris Triana. Mike and I both share a passion for stories and business. Many storytellers don't understand finance; many business people don't understand stories. Mike is the rare person with an understanding of each. The basic issue is stories and businesses operate on different time frames. You can only measure good art over long time frames, like centuries. Does it have staying power? Yet, we measure business acumen in quarters or years. Any storyteller who is not independently wealthy must navigate these opposing realities. Also, before turning to the investment update, I want to share that one of the previous podcast guests, George Manahan, testified before Congress, the link to his testimony is here, before the passage of the National Plan to End Parkinson's Act. I'm hopeful this podcast gave him a platform to share his message. Investment Update

The Abortion Counseling Service of Women's Liberation, codenamed “Jane,” performed an estimated 11,000 low-cost abortions in Chicago in the years immediately preceding the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Jane began in 1969 as a counseling service that connected people with doctors willing to terminate their pregnancies. But soon enough, its members started assisting with the procedures, and by the end of 1971, were themselves providing as many as 90 abortions a week in addition to basic gynecological care. None of the Jane volunteers—all of them women—were doctors. They simply believed that women should take reproductive care into their own hands, as they had done for centuries prior to the advent of bans on abortion. In The Story of Jane, activist Laura Kaplan tells the story of the legendary service, of which she herself was a member. Director Phyllis Nagy discusses her new film, Call Jane, with fellow director Sarah Pirozek in a Q&A at the DGA theater in New York. In the conversation, Nagy discusses directing actor/directors, the intentional performers who make up the soundtrack, and how restrictions make for interesting choices. Set in Chicago in 1968, the film follows Joy, a conservative housewife and mother who is faced with a devastating diagnosis when her second pregnancy leads to a life-threatening heart condition. Unable to get an exemption for a legal abortion, she turns to a clandestine group of women for help. Please note: spoilers are included. Francis echoed the theme of his September address at an ecumenical meeting in Kazakhstan – where he denounced “proselytism and indoctrination” – saying that “it is not enough to grant permits and recognize freedom of worship; it is necessary to achieve true freedom of religion.” Guest Seg. - Dennis Knapp In short, I am very concerned that the faithful's voice was silent in the creation of this report. This report will eventually combine with other reports of similar messages from around the word and presented to Rome. The intent of such reports is clear: an attempt to change Catholic teaching on human sexuality, marriage, and ordination through the Synod of Synodality. I contend that those who lead this effort seek to appeal to sensus fidelium in their attempt at doctrinal change. The thought is that if all the "faithful" throughout the world agree, the Pope must listen and move towards change. My hope and prayer is that this is not how the faithful truly think. I hope this is merely another attempt by dissidents within the Church at radical change. 2nd Guest Seg. - Tito Edwards – BigPulpit.com - - 19 Church's close in Columbus, OH - Papal Posse SLAMS Newly Released Working Document on Synodality Joe Social Media IG: @TheCatholicHack Twitter: @Catholic_Hack Facebook: Joe McClane YouTube: Joe McClane Rudy Social Media IG: @ydursolrac Youtube: Glad Trad Podcast Adrian Social Media IG: @ffonze Twitter: @AdrianFonze Facebook: Adrian Fonseca YouTube: Adrian Fonseca YouTube: Catholic Conversations Visit our website to learn more about us, find a local GRN radio station, a schedule of our programming and so much more. http://grnonline.com/

On this week's Scoop we tell you all you need to know about the recent Paul Pelosi attack dominating the news cycle, including why liberal journalists don't bother to investigate or ask for proof as you would when reporting on an alleged crime. We then chat with comedian Lou Perez to discuss his book “That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore: On the Death and Rebirth of Comedy.” In other media malfeasance, we share a New York Times article on fake Indians that fails to mention two very famous Americans of recent years, and examine a new abortion touting film “Call Jane” that is failing at the box office. We also share a powerful sermon from our recent travels about not separating your faith from your public life, given by none other than late Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia's son. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ap-scoop/message

It's a very special BEHIND THE LENS Halloween show as STEVE LEE talks about some big doings with THE HOLLYWOOD SOUND MUSEUM. Plus, I talk about a very important film for our time, especially with midterm elections upon us, the Phyllis Nagy-directed CALL JANE. And Oscar winner RICHARD ANDERSON surprises us with a call to not only talk sound but give us some tidbits on the upcoming political dramedy LEE'D THE WAY which he directed! Sound guru and founder of The Hollywood Sound Museum, STEVE LEE, was in-studio with us once again to announce some very important reveals and surprises about the Museum! And just what was the big announcement Steve had for us all? The Hollywood Sound Museum is having its first pop-up! Long a goal of Steve's to start with some smaller pop-ups on the sound experience as he works up to the physical museum, everyone will be able to experience a sonic montage of some of cinema's most famous sounds at the upcoming LOSCON festival! Steve's got all the skinny for us on Loscon and more Museum happenings. Plus, we get a big surprise when Oscar-winner RICHARD ANDERSON (the man behind Indy's whip in "Raiders of the Lost Ark") calls in to join in the Halloween hijinks and give us a tease for his upcoming directorial narrative feature, LEE'D THE WAY. But first, we take just a few minutes to talk about the new film CALL JANE and hear an excerpt of my exclusive interview with director PHYLLIS NAGY (Oscar-nominated for her screenplay for "Carol"). With midterm elections a week away and balloting taking place in many states already, CALL JANE is an important film for our times. Written by Hayley Schore and Roshan Sethi and directed by Phyllis, CALL JANE stars Sigourney Weaver and Elizabeth Banks in this summer of 1968 story of a married woman with an unwanted life-threatening pregnancy unable to get a legal abortion who finds help and an alliance with a group of suburban women dedicated to providing clean, safe medical care, and loving support to women in need. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com
Actor Elizabeth Banks discusses her film “Call Jane” about The Jane Collective of Chicago, which provided abortion health care pre-Roe v. Wade, the dangers and desperate situations people find themselves in when they don't want to be pregnant, and her goal to destigmatize abortion procedures. It's sort of a low-key week around here as we wait for Black Panther to return on Breakfast All Day. Christy and Alonso review “Call Jane,” about the underground group that helped women secure safe abortions in 1968 Chicago, starring a terrific Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver. We also catch up with the toxic romance “Stars at Noon,” the latest from master French filmmaker Claire Denis, which is now streaming on Hulu. In news, we discuss Elon Musk buying Twitter, the “Wakanda Forever” premiere (and keep an eye out for our YouTube livestream discussion on Nov. 12), the weird Matthew Perry-Keanu Reeves beef, James Gunn taking over DC Studios and more. And over at our Patreon, recaps of this week's excellent episodes of “Andor” and “The Handmaid's Tale.” Thanks as always for hanging out, and save some Halloween candy for us.

The new movie “Call Jane” is a period piece about abortion and reproductive activism in the years before Roe vs Wade was enacted. But given our post-Roe world and the very real consequences of abortion bans across the country, the plot — about a suburban housewife who desperately needs an abortion but can't get one in her state — sounds like it could be ripped from our 2022 headlines. What can a story about our past struggles teach us about our present circumstances? Why is levity a convincing tool in the fight for bodily autonomy? Can a movie like “Call Jane” affect the fast-approaching midterms? On this episode of Next Question with Katie Couric, Katie talks with the movie's director, Phyllis Nagy, and its star, Elizabeth Banks, about the movie's poignancy, some of its blood-boiling scenes, and why the movie's not just preaching to the choir. “Call Jane” is in select theaters starting Oct. 28. For more information about abortion access in this country, check out Katie's six-part podcast series on the subject, Abortion: The Body Politic. Some of the real life Janes are featured in Part Two. In the years before Roe v. Wade, the group known as Jane helped more than 11,000 Chicago women get abortions. We look back at the group and talk with one of its members as activists and health advocates mobilize in anticipation of the end of Roe.Read more:In the years before Roe v. Wade guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion, a group of women banded together in Chicago to help others access the procedure illegally. Their fliers read things like: “Pregnant? Don't want to be? Call Jane.” Jane became the group's code name. They estimate that between 1969 and 1973 they helped around 11,000 women get abortions, and many members of the group learned to perform abortions themselves. Laura Kaplan was a member of Jane from 1971 to '73 and wrote a book on the group's history called “The Story of Jane: The Legendary Underground Feminist Abortion Service.” Today on the show, we talk to Laura about the dangers women faced before abortions were constitutionally protected, how the underground group evolved, and how she's making sense of this moment as activists and health advocates mobilize in anticipation of the end of Roe.
