Immer wieder stellen wir uns die Frage: "War früher wirklich alles besser?" Aber wann ist eigentlich "früher"? In unserer Kindheit?

Some (real and joke) events were announced, such as the Salem Sh!tshow and Interplanetario 2023 where random lists would be used. Cortex and I decided to make up for lost time after the delayed previous episode by knocking out another one quick-like, and here it is! Catching up on what we can of the last couple of months of MeFi, and also ranting and philosophizing a little bit about recent seismic changes in the social media sphere and also about design skeuomorphism and the semiotics of interfaces? That last bit is probably overselling it a little? Anyway, runs about 90 minutes.Helpful LinksPodcast FeedSubscribe with iTunesDirect mp3 downloadMisc - Do some last minute holiday shopping at The MeFi Mall - Jessamyn's hone game memory was Kubrix Jobs - Setting up and moderating a Mastodon instance (but not hosting) by Shepherd - Business Process Automation Specialist by chiefthe - Software development guru by Dansaman Projects - Daily MRRP! by ignignokt - Finishing my grandfather's work: stained glass menorah by cortex (MeFi Post) - Part I of my graphic memoir "Growing In My Gray" by DMelanogaster (MeFi Post) - Get Blogging! by bwerdmuller (MeFi Post) - You've Been Played: How Corporations, Governments, and Schools Use Games to Control Us All by adrianhon - More "More Info" for Netflix (desktop web) by staggernation MetaFilter - Dear Twitter Advertisers by autopilot - Subterranean birdsite blues by nthdegx - a comment by mark k - Cohost, a new social media site by brainwane - Mastodon is having its moment in the sun by toastyk - Sick of Musk? by dobbs - PSA: do not use services that hate the internet by mecran01 - We knew this was coming by May Kasahara - Advent Incremental by juv3nal - No, that can't be done.... I talk a little bit about my recent decision to transition away from running MetaFilter (but we'll, inter alia, keep podcasting); Jessamyn and I talk about MeFi stuff as per usual; we establish that she started watching the wrong show and couldn't figure out why people liked it; and we chatter about at least three words we're not sure how to pronounce and establish, once more, that neither of us can read IPA. We got a rootin' tootin' podcast here. Darn tootin'. Can you both rootin'- and darn'- something that's tootin' in the same paragraph like this? I don't know. I really don't know. I accidentally wrote "make a podcast" on a colander instead of the calendar, so on the downside this episode is pretty late but on the upside it has been thoroughly rinsed. Is that anything? Can we do anything with that? Anyway, here's a podcast, it's about 90 minutes, and it involves me and Jessamyn getting off on at least a couple different tangents on the subject *of* getting off on tangents, so it's a very MetaFilter podcast indeed.Helpful LinksPodcast FeedSubscribe with iTunesDirect mp3 downloadMisc - look at this pretty and invasive Emerald Ash Borer - I still think Louis DeJoy sucks honestly - the kids on TikTok have been confounding me lately with what, it turns out, is audio of Adam Driver saying "good soup" - I feel like jessamyn's sister Kate isn't contributing enough - at some point we said something about librarycarpentry.org - also I am supposed to watch The Unbelievable Truth but I do not remember which one now - a flowchart of distractible storytelling Projects - 1,228,178 genetic variants, 2 million years by clawsoon - Datasette Desktop (macOS application) by simonw - Copying a mid-century stool....mid-14th century BCE by brachiopod (MeFi Post) - Wildcard Bicycle Novelties by adamrice - Invisible Sun by cstross - A channel vocoder walkthrough by ignignokt MetaFilter - What I learned about my writing by seeing only the punctuation by eotvos - "Also would've accepted Nine Inch Oates" by carrienation - DO YOU REMEMBER - Can someone explain how this video has 4.1M Views but has 200 likes????? by theodolite - "If we make more angry content, we get more engagement." by They sucked his brains out! - Rewild Your Attention by MonkeyToes - One Woman's Mission to Rewrite Nazi History on Wikipedia by cgc373 Ask MeFi - Can you help find the current location of this old Vienna address? by Miss T.Horn - Can you solve this mystery about a book? by grumblebee - a comment by pocams - Should my child's school's PTA accept cryptocurrency? by Toddles - Nervous system hacks/resets by danceswithlight - What's the oldest thing I can buy, just to have? by tiamat - "Y'know, this stuff is kinda wasted on just ponies..." by Wordshore - Preventing maggots in trash by Anonymous - a comment by Jack Karaoke - Looking for 90s sci-fi story about a librarian & all-knowing computer by kaisemic - Please help me solve a VERY DUMB plumbing emergency. by centrifugal MetaTalk - Metatalktails: Must be the season of the ... which? by taz

Jessamyn and I do what we do best: manage to show up and record a podcast despite it all. We talk about (a) a bunch of COVID stuff and (b) a bunch of stuff that has nothing to do with COVID and (c) the whole process of trying to navigate that balance. I drink most of a tall beer. It's podcast time, and it's a (relatively) brief, (relatively) under-produced episode this time, with me and Jessamyn chatting about MeFi stuff for about 70 minutes because my voice was a little worn out.Helpful LinksPodcast FeedSubscribe with iTunesDirect mp3 downloadBecause I just want to get this dang thing out the door, there are no extra musical bumpers this episode, but I assure you there's lots of good stuff to listen to over on MeFi Music so if you feel so inclined you should probably just hit pause on this every twenty minutes or so and listen to something. Sheesh, it's a week into the year and I still keep trying to write "2018" on my podcasts. But it's the new year, and Jessamyn and I catch up on what's happened on the big blue linky sea lately. Also occasionally featuring my neighbor's rented wood chipper! But also, more importantly, featuring messages from a whole bunch of MeFites who called in to share well wishes, new year greetings, old year ass-and-screendoorings, and some lovely and heartfelt thoughts about where they are, where we are, and hoping for us all to keep getting there together in the next year.Helpful LinksPodcast FeedSubscribe with iTunesDirect mp3 downloadIf you want to hop straight to the call-in bits to hear each other's voices, I've included them all in two chunks, starting at about 14 minutes in and then again at about 62 minutes in. Usually, at 18-year-old online community MetaFilter, a U.S. presidential election year means a big increase in heated political discussion. But once a victor is declared, and the transfer of power occurs, things go back to normal. Not this time. The 2016 presidential election – MetaFilter’s fifth – has created a situation where, six months after the election, they are still dealing with far more political discussion than they would normally be seeing. For a community that isn’t focused on politics, this is an incredible burden on moderators and has “measurably affected both the distribution and tone of discussion,” according to owner Josh Millard. It has become the election year that will not end. We also discuss: MetaFilter’s recent ownership transfer from Matt Haughey to Josh Member suicide deaths and the impact they have had on the community How MetaFilter has addressed casual sexism, racism and transphobia Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “‘How did this happen? How did we not know? Is there something we could have done?’ [Suicide in an online community] can leave people rethinking their assumptions about the place as a community. You stop and think, ‘This person, who was a long time contributor here, it turns out that they were suffering. They were really not doing well, and we didn’t know.’ Or maybe, there were signs. [They left] comments that they were maybe struggling a lot lately, but we didn’t really know to do something. We guessed that something was up, and then this happened. That can be really challenging. That can be really emotionally devastating to find yourself second-guessing your relationship with that person.” -@joshmillard “As much as we’ve been getting steadily better on [casual sexism and misogyny at MetaFilter], in general, it has remained an incremental process because you have to get people on board. You have to set that expectation, you have to do education. You have to teach people to question things that they had taken for granted previously and that includes things like, who is impacted when you’re just joking? Who actually takes the brunt of your disinclination to re-examine the stuff that you learned in middle school? It’s very step-by-step. Every once in a while it feels a little three steps forward, two steps back, because you can’t teach everybody and new people join and some people come out of the woodwork and something sets someone off. Even when people are trying, it’s really easy when you’re dealing with discussions of isms, in general, for someone to have a fairly defensive reaction to being told that they’re doing something, even if their intent is reasonably good, even if they aren’t a real jerk.” -@joshmillard “The last thing we want [at MetaFilter] is to say, ‘Good enough. We’re pretty not sexist, we’re pretty not racist. Everybody just chill. I think we found a good compromise.’ It’s going to keep being a thing. It’s going to be an ongoing, difficult effort because that’s how improving at this stuff works.” -@joshmillard About Josh Millard Josh Millard is an artist, musician, programmer and generalized weird-creative-stuff-maker from Portland, OR. Darrell Becker returns to build off the methods of Non-Violent Communication and the Trivium, now we’re looking at the way we think and the way we talk in a little more depth. Here are the methods and notes Darrell and … Continue reading →
Part four, and the last of the foundational episodes, in our series examining the concept of scientific consensus and contrasting it with the voices of dissenters who find value in minority scientific opinions, theories and conclusions. It will also ask the question: is there any way to bridge the gap? Darrell Becker will be co-hosting all episodes in this series. Discussion: In the second installment of this series, we explored strategies for more constructive and connected communication with others. Today we discuss strategies for better communication with ourselves. We discuss some of the meta-talk in this climate change "debate" Dimensions of the Habits of Mind Value: Choosing to employ a pattern of intellectual behaviors rather than other, less productive patterns. Inclination: Feeling the tendency to employ a pattern of intellectual behaviors. Sensitivity: Perceiving opportunities for, and appropriateness of, employing the pattern of behaviors. Capability: Possessing the basic skills and capacities to carry through with the behaviors. Commitment: Constantly striving to reflect on and improve performance of the pattern of intellectual behaviors. Policy: Making it a policy to promote and incorporate the patterns of intellectual behaviors into actions, decisions, and resolutions of problematic situations. 7 Ways to Deal with Uncertainty to be Happier and Less Anxious 1. Replace expectations with plans. 2. Prepare for different possibilities. 3. Become a feeling observer. 4. Get confident about your coping and adapting skills. 5. Utilize stress reduction techniques preemptively. 6. Focus on what you can control. 7. Practice mindfulness. Source: http://tinybuddha.com/blog/7-ways-to-deal-with-uncertainty/ See Brett's notes here. Series Background: "My thesis is that the criteria by which individuals are deemed qualified or unqualified to become professionals involve not just technical knowledge as is generally assumed, but also attitude—in particular, attitude toward working within an assigned political and ideological framework. I contend, for example, that all tests of technical knowledge, such as the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), are at the same time tests of attitude and that the examinations used to assess professional qualification are no exception. I consider in detail how the neutral-looking technical questions on such examinations probe the candidate's attitude. The qualifying attitude, I find, is an uncritical, subordinate one, which allows professionals to take their ideological lead from their employers and appropriately fine-tune the outlook that they bring to their work. The resulting professional is an obedient thinker, an intellectual property whom employers can trust to experiment, theorize, innovate and create safely within the confines of an assigned ideology. The political and intellectual timidity of today's most highly educated employees is no accident." -Jeff Schmidt, Disciplined Minds Bumper Music: "Lucky Man" The Verve Look Closer: Darrell's Site: Voluntary Visions - http://voluntaryvisions.com/ Darrell's Communication Glossary - http://schoolsucksproject.com/practical-definitions-voluntary-communication-by-darrell-becker/ Scientific Consensus and the Argument From Authority - https://skeptoid.com/blog/2013/04/09/scientific-consensus-and-the-argument-from-authority T&H Trivium Resources - https://www.tragedyandhope.com/trivium/ Logic Saves Lives Series - http://schoolsucksproject.com/category/podcast/logic-saves-lives/
