Life is an ever-changing ocean of motion, and we may have many iterations of ourselves throughout our lives, so I think purpose can take on many looks and feels. We can have a sense of purpose throughout our day as we serve others or achieve our goals; we can pay attention to life with purpose so that we are more present in our day-to-day or in the case of today's guest, we can feel an innate draw to something and follow that calling, and sometimes that becomes our way of life. Even though Bryan Mineo was raised 250 miles away from the nearest ocean, he felt a love for the ocean from as early as he can remember. He dreamt about swimming in its waters and spending time on its shores but also a distance between what was calling him and his physical surroundings. He bridged the gap as best he could with pool swimming, then open water swimming in lakes, and eventually moving to Southern California's Pacific coast and, over time, into the purpose that he lives today, bridging the gap for people between living on land and the great element of water. Bryan is the founder of The Swim Mechanic and One with the Ocean, which is centered around improving humans' relationship with the ocean. If you have been following our stories, you know we've been joining the Sunday morning open-water workouts at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas. They are incredible training sessions; they are so much fun and also relevant to improving triathlete skills. Admittedly, we knew about Bryan and his incredible organization, but joining the group took us a few years. Why? We really don't have a good reason, but we trust the divine orchestration of the timing of our connection and this episode. Thank you, enjoy the show! And afterward be sure to check out NEW PATREON tiers to support this and the Awake Athlete podcasts, let's keep both commercial-free! In this episode, we discuss: - Bryan's happy place in Grand Cayman - communing with the ocean - ocean connects our global family - first traumatic open water experience - first awareness of ‘breath' - deep-rooted fears about the water - importance of creating a first, positive experience - ocean is our teacher - the beauty of the impact zone - hold your breath or let it go - learning the frequency of the wave - SHARKS and the truth - what is the dream? Purpose comes in unexpected ways, but as I reflect on my life experience, I see a million moments that logically led to where I sit today. For our guest today Shaleen Shah, it started many decades ago with a love for horses. A love that led to a rescue of a horse named Haa-lee led to another rescue and eventually to the creation of Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary located in Erie, Colorado. To date, Luvin Arms has rescued over 800 animals from circumstances of neglect, abuse, and the systematic terror of animal agriculture. They have exponentially raised awareness among humans that animals are individuals with families, emotions, and community needs. They have taught tens of thousands that these sacred beings have the same right as people to live peaceful and loving lives in their natural habitats. Steeped in the principle of Ahimsa, Luvin Arms is dedicated to a way of life that embraces nonviolence toward all living beings. As stated on their website, they provide exceptional lifelong social, emotional, and cognitive care to rescued farmed animals, and advocate for those who have not been rescued by sharing our residents' stories to inspire, educate, and empower others to embrace a more compassionate and sustainable lifestyle. Shaleen and his wife Shilpi founded Luvin Arms in 2015 with zero ideas of how to build a sanctuary. They faced an extraordinary task ahead but could not deny the circumstances that unfolded or the knowing that the universe was asking them to step into a completely new purpose in life. So with a deep calling on their hearts, two young children, and a mountain of obstacles ahead of them, they went for it. We are so grateful for the conversation before you; admittedly, my heart was deeply touched while researching for this show, and I shed a few tears along the way. Thank you for tuning in. In this episode we discuss: - a day in the life at the Farm Sanctuary - dairy industry practices - discovering and figuring out veganism - cheese addiction - rescuing horses from auction - cannot deny calls from the universe - how Luvin Arms was born - scariest moments in the transition from entrepreneurship to saving animal lives - stories of first rescues - animals learning to trust humans again - commitment to the practice of ahimsa - compassion for all beings - purity is within us, peace is within us - inspiration for the creation of Open Sanctuary - how to start a sanctuary - the purpose of antibiotics in the farming industry - living a full ahimsa life Thank you to all patrons on Patreon for keeping this podcast commercial-free, we are grateful for you. On August 12th Travis Soares completed perhaps the craziest FKT attempt in the history of FKTs when he finished climbing the Sierra Peaks Section List in the fastest known time. 247 peaks in 117 days, 8 hrs, and 34 minutes over 700,000 ft of climbing, all the while raising funds to support the Bishop Paiute Tribe Food Sovereignty Program, which aligns with Travis's passion for decreasing food waste and making more environmentally responsible foods accessible to those who need it. Before Travis discovered his love for the mountains, he spent many years growing up as an oddity in his hometown of Barrington, RI. Getting in trouble for not wearing shoes and skipping school to meditate were commonplace for Travis as he navigated an innate knowing that he was not where he wanted to be. We are super pumped to have former professional triathlete Leanda Cave with us today. Leanda is a multi-time world champion, coach, an absolute legend in the sport of triathlon, and most recently, an Ultraman athlete. Leanda placed 2nd overall at Ultraman Canada, beating the first male overall by 11-minutes which means that women claimed the first two podium spots. So very, very cool. Five years later, she moved into long-distance triathlon, winning her second world title at the ITU long-distance world championship. And then, in 2012 became the first woman in history to complete the double when she won the Ironman 70.3 and 140.6 World Championships just five weeks apart. So needless to say, we're super excited to be having a conversation with yet another, spectacular physician from Plant-Based TeleHealth. I met IzzyB shortly after I moved to San Diego with a new purpose to complete my first ultra-marathon, and since knowing her, although we don't see each other often, I have watched her level up in so many ways. It's always a treat to join one of her UltraBuds group runs or when I run into her on the trails, which happens occasionally. Izzy plays so many roles in this life and is another guest who leaves us with no excuses. She is president of Janovick Communications, a marketing strategy firm, founder of UltraBuds running group, and co-founder of Ghost Runners Coaching alongside YTP guest Vera Stepina from episode 196. Izzy is an ultra runner herself and an obstacle course racer training for and has since completed, the Dallas Spartan Ultra 50k, which includes over 60 obstacles. I would describe Izzy as driven. She completes what she starts and continues to grow past her limitations as I see her empower her athletes to do the same. When she's not out there crushing it for herself or her athletes, she's in service of others. She recently paced a friend at the Badwater 135 and just announced that she is the race director for the North County Beer run. So how did she get here? Well, that's what we dive into during this episode and more. In this episode, we discuss: - Spartan racing - Wimpy gyms - her upcoming and first 100-mile trail run - the intersection of strength and endurance running - from a broken back to trail running - mental training techniques - burpees everyday - nutrition for athletes - “F” macros - balancing a love for beer with a commitment to fitness - carb loading - heat training - pacing at Badwater Thank you to all who keep this podcast commercial-free through your pledge on Patreon. We then recorded a YTP mini with her in June 2020 as BJ, and I watched her business expand within a global pandemic. We are so excited to have Michael Wardian back in the house today; we first sat down with Mike in 2016 for episode 25, where we talked about relentlessly pursuing passion and pushing the limits of what has been made possible. Mike is an international shipbroker, speaker, coach, business owner, dad to two boys and two vizslas, Rosie and Bash, and of course, a very well-known ultra runner, which almost feels too blah of a descriptive for this guy. His resume on UltraSignUp dates back to 1998. Anyone who knows of Mike never seems to be surprised at his FKT attempts, robust race schedule, or solo adventures like his Guinness book world record attempt for the fastest known time for a marathon in a highland dress. Still, I have to say, his win at last year's Quarantine Backyard Ultra was one of the most epic challenges I've witnessed, thanks to social media. It was a virtual race that started with over 2,400 runners from more than 50 countries. It ended over 60 hours later with only two runners left, Mike and Radek Brunner, who missed the start of the 63rd lap, making Mike the winner after 422 kilometers of running. As I said, the resume is massive, and we're super pumped for you to listen in and hear what he is relentlessly brewing up for the future. In this episode, we discuss: - winning the quarantine backyard in 2020 - FKT for the run across America - coming back from injury - injury as an opportunity - grow incrementally and stay consistent - do weird things that you wouldn't normally do - limiting yourself because you don't want to learn something - mental game crossover of ultra running and chess - perspective on engineered nutrition for racing - pickleball training for a high altitude ultra - unique challenges of a graduate-level 100-miler - running on the moon Thank you so much for being so supportive of the show; if it has made a positive impact, please consider pledging on Patreon, where you will be assisting us in keeping the YogiTriathlete and Awake Athlete podcasts commercial-free. Jackson Foster is our guest today and someone who has lived an odyssey that is undoubtedly against the grain of consensus thinking in just shy of three decades on this earth. Despite growing up in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles, Jackson always felt a deep pull to be outdoors. During his high school years, he found the High Mountain Institute, where he spent a semester connecting with nature on a deeper level, and he was hooked. Returning to his upscale private high school only further confirmed his need to take the road less traveled in life. His biggest adventures started between high school and college when he rode his bike across America, traveled to Asia for a backpacking adventure, volunteered at an orangoutang orphanage, and apprenticed with a master potter. All of which sealed his knowing that he had to continue to live an alternative and adventurous lifestyle. Jackson is a visionary who is bringing his visions to manifestation. He is a yogi, a vegan advocate, a farmer, most recently an ultrarunner, and a voice for all to take risks and dream extreme. In this episode, we discuss: - climate change and policy around the environment - embracing trouble & experiences - try many new things to find who you are - follow your childhood dreams - detach from expectations - his longest run yet - lifestyle of gratitude - 50k fueling as a vegan - Costa Rica permaculture farming - upcoming retreat offerings - Maggie - the vegan dog Thank you so much for being so supportive of the show; if it has made a positive impact, please consider pledging on Patreon, where you will be assisting us in keeping the YogiTriathlete and Awake Athlete podcasts commercial-free. To sum it all up, she is a medical doctor in this modern world who believes that a whole food plant-based diet is often more potent than her prescription pad, and we want to shine a big ole light on that. Megan Searfoss is a business owner, seasoned triathlete, runner, coach, wife, and mom of three daughters who learned to run because she found it an inexpensive, time-saving, and mostly mind-saving exercise. As described by one of our friends who live in Megan's hometown, "she is so remarkable, a ring leader of the local triathlon community. Positive, even-handed and supportive of all other businesses, nonprofits and individuals". We know a bit about her background from our digging around, and we know that although her positivity may be innate, her life experience has not been without challenge. Each week for five years, this podcast has shined a light on people who are looking, finding, and living their purpose. For some, it takes some years of sifting and sorting, while for others, it comes with one decision that shifts the trajectory of their lives. Bottom line, we are all here on purpose; there are no mistakes and if you are feeling like you are still sifting and sorting, know that every moment is your purpose of finding your purpose, and you never know when it will show up. Today's guest is Ellie Salthouse, undeniably one of the fastest triathletes in the profession right now. She is no doubt someone who is on purpose with what she came to this earth to do, and it all began at the age of 11. One morning while munching on her cereal Ellie noticed an ad on the cereal box for the Weetabix triathlon. She had her mom sign her up, she completed the race, started training with a coach the following week, turned pro at 17, and now resides under the esteemed guidance of Siri Lindley, our beloved guest from episode 39. Initially an ITU pro, Ellie turned to half distance triathlon in 2016 and finished her first season with four titles, multiple podium finishes, and a top 10 at the 70.3 world championship. At 28 years old, she is a veteran in the sport of triathlon, and we are so excited to be in the company of such a fantastic athlete whose beautiful personality only makes her light shine brighter. We are excited to have Shoshana Chaim of PlantTrainers back on the show today. BJ and I shared with mic with Shoshana and her husband Adam in early 2019, and we went deep right off the bat. An organic dive into their story brought to the surface important and tender topics like PTSD and mental wellness. So if you have not listened to that episode, it’s 148 and linked up in the show notes. It’s a compelling story that started with two seemingly healthy people that faced two devastating diagnoses that threatened to end Adam’s life before the age of forty. Doctors told them to cross their fingers, which for Shoshana meant, prepare for the worst. Pregnant with their second child at the time and entirely overwhelmed by the unknown of their future, Shoshana experienced a day-to-day trauma that led to perhaps the greatest battle of her life; to regain her mental health. Shoshana is a public speaker, podcast host of the PlantTrainers podcast, health and wellness guru, and author with a brand new book we will learn today. She is on a mission to heal people from the inside out and dedicates her time to spreading the messages of eating well, living well, and healing as individuals and families. We hope you enjoy the show! Matt Dixon is a world-class triathlon coach with a background as an elite swimmer and exercise physiologist. Matt is a former professional triathlete who is all too familiar with the highs and lows of athleticism. I have heard him describe himself as the example of doing a professional career very poorly, a heavy admittance that he has since used to his advantage to learn and grow. Matt has evolved into one of the most sought-after coaches in the world. He has seen great success in applying his methodology to guide athletes to the very top of triathlon. Matt is the founder of Purple Patch Fitness, an international community of coaches and athletes; he is the Purple Patch podcast host and author of The Well-Built Triathlete and Fast-Track Triathlete. We are excited to share our conversation with Matt because although his focus may appear to be athletic potential, it is ultimately about reaching human potential, which is something we believe we are all meant to realize in this life. There are so many people in this world making powerful and positive impacts, and today we get to share the mic with one of those gorgeous beings. Holly Skodis is a yogi who has studied the ancient science of yoga for the past two decades, a practice for living that typically begins on the mat but through repetitive practice has the power to transform the lives of its practitioners. Holly is a yoga instructor, certified vegan lifestyle coach and educator, podcast host, and Yoga founder of Yoga is Vegan, a project focused on inspiring yogis to go vegan. This project started with a collection of articles from vegan yoga teachers and students sharing their perspectives on why Yoga is Vegan.
