Aurora Leon-Conde, along with her partner Joaquin, joined Jess and BJ to debrief her recent finish of the Tahoe 200. The journey was not without massive resistance, all of which Aurora overcame in the end using the power of her mind. Aurora is a pillar of strength and a long-time member of Team YogiTriathlete. She has completed many epic feats throughout the year and serves as a leader in the YT Community for doing hard things with grace. Aurora discovered running while studying medicine in New York, eventually leading her to run the NYC marathon in 2011. Through endurance sports, she realized that she was capable of accessing parts of her mind that were dormant in regular life. She became fascinated by this and started running longer distances to see what else she could access. Her most recent endeavor, and the catalyst for finally having her on the show, was her successful finish of the Tahoe 200. There is so much more that this woman has accomplished, and her list of future accolades continues to grow. We hope that she inspires you as much as she inspires us. We're fired up to have ultrarunner Jake Jackson with us for this episode following his maiden voyage of Cocodona 250, although, in the weeks following, Jake was already on the top of the podium at the Nanny Goat 12-hour and at the time of this recording, days away from the San Diego 100. Jake is a dad of three, husband, full-time professional with UPS, and former smoker-partier who realized alongside his wife that they needed to adopt a healthier lifestyle. So they traded their cigarettes for running shoes. After road running and finding success as a fast runner, Jake turned to the trails. His ultra sign-up CV is long, reporting his first trail race in October of 2014, although he had already been lacing up his shoes for several years at that point. Jake has twice represented Team USA in the 24-hour World Championships, been last man standing at a last-man-standing race, taken wins and stood on the podium countless times, grinded away miles and managed to get it all in despite working full-time, being a dad, and giving space to his wife, Missy, to hit the trails and get in her training. He's credited with a reputation for positivity and lifting others up along the way, and we are certain you are going to love his laid-back, no-excuses demeanor. Like many of you, the YogiTriathlete team was glued to this year's coverage of the Cocodona 250, and today, you get to hear all about it from first-time finisher Dandelion Dullvio-Scott. Chris Thornley, the founder of Squirrel's Nut Butter, introduced hosts Jess and BJ to Dandelion, their fellow SNB Adventure Teammate, after her grueling 105:28:27 journey from Black City Canyon to downtown Flagstaff. This point-to-point foot race, the Cocodona 250, is not for the faint of heart, with over 40,000 feet of vertical gain and 34,000 feet of loss over the 250 miles. It culminates in a challenging climb up Mt. Elden before a final descent into town to the finish line. From her mountaineering roots, Dandelion stepped into trail racing in 2018 with her first fast-pack event and has accumulated countless miles and finishes over the years, but Cocodona was her first race of the 200-mile flavor. Jess and BJ sit down with triathlete Sebastian Radilla, who recently captured the overall win at the now-infamous Ironman 70.3 Morro Bay. This year's race will go down in triathlon history as having some of the most chaotic conditions, which resulted in DNF rates close to 400. Most of these occurred during the swim due to a current that we heard was about 5 knots. The conversion is 1.15 miles per hour x 5—almost 6 miles per hour, which is faster than most people can swim. Sebastian, who swam competitively throughout high school and has continued to work on his swim through triathlon, came out of the water first in his age group and then moved through the field to capture the W on the day. Jess and BJ dive in with this champion to get a first-hand recount of his day and insight into what it takes to be a champion. Six years ago, Hannah Hoetmer had zero climbing experience and could barely run a mile. But here she is now, a professional alpinist for The North Face. Hannah is involved in her own adventure goals but also deeply invested in the success of others and breaking down barriers in the climbing world by providing accessible training, resources, and support for climbers with diverse needs. She is also a big champion for women achieving their dreams and is endeavoring to complete a project she calls 30 before 30, which is to mentor 30 women before she turns 30 next year. Many years ago, 2009 to be exact, YogiTriathlete founders BJ and Jess took the double win at a local triathlon in Boulder, CO taking home the grand prize of two big burritos. Since that day, every time they both take the win, they refer to it as the "Big Burrito Win" and they almost had another just a few weeks ago at the Mission Bay Triathlon in San Diego. However, BJ's first-place ranking quickly moved to second place as the results rolled in, and then was left to watch how his mind wanted to cling to the top step of the podium. Oh, the work of taming the mind is never done but it assuredly does become easier to let things go along the way. This episode is a great reminder to all triathletes and the triathlon-curious that swim, bike, run is a triathlon at any distance. On this particular weekend, Team YogiTriathlete athletes spanned the distances from the Ironman World Championship full distance of 140.6 to the mini kids sprint in the birthplace of triathlon. So no matter the distance, no matter the pace triathlon is meant to be celebrated, not minimized. Today, we have not one but two of the most sought-after coaches in the world. Lawrence Van Lingen and Erin Carson have risen to legendary status in the world of endurance sports by following their curiosity and not worrying too much about what the mainstream says about mobility and strength for athletes. Guided by intuition and strong intellects, these two coaches are staples in the lives of A-List athletes like Jan Frodeno, Rudy Von Berg, Taylor Knibb, and Paula Findlay. Erin is making her three-peat appearance on the show today, having first come on the show back in 2018 for episode 114 and then just a few months ago for episode 373. Lawrence first came on the show in 2019 for episode 184, which was also his first podcast ever. After recently speaking to Erin and then learning that Lawrence has left his So Cal contingency for the athletic mecca of Boulder, Colorado, we were inspired to get these two on together. They eagerly said yes because they are amazing and love this community, and we love listening to the passion they have for everyone to realize free movement in their body. We hope you take many nuggets of gold away as you listen, and if you desire more community in your life, perhaps joining Team YogiTriathlete is your next step. We'd love to have you with us! When YogiTriathlete first came to be over two decades ago, it was "The YogiTriathlete." There was always something that felt limited about the name as we both knew YogiTriathlete was meant to serve many. Years later, we dropped the first word, and it became a business in 2016, but even before this, we had many followers who did not identify as athletes but very much felt aligned with the community. This has continued and serves to remind us that YogiTriathlete is more than sport. It's a recipe for life that hits all the bases: body, mind, and spirit. And so, after many years, we are thrilled to announce our Wellness Coaching offering, which brings physical movement, mental health, and vibrant nutrition together as you wish in a supportive relationship that is meant to transform and grow. It's become obvious that it is a fantastic option for athletes who want to take a break from traditional sport specific training or are healing from something in their life but want to remain in good health and wellbeing. We talk about this new coaching option towards the end of today's show. Thank you for listening. Be sure to check out NEW PATREON tiers to support this and the Awake Athlete podcasts; let's keep both commercial-free! In this episode, we discuss: - going against the grain - we'll get knocked down until we say "no more" - going in when the energy outside intensifies - memories and finding truth - what is unacceptable in others is actually unacceptable in us - our senior quotes - vocalizing struggles reduces the hold they have on us - becoming the master of your response - IM World Championship in Nice - reflections - takeaways from BJ's Ironman 70.3 Santa Cruz - BJ's process to create race stategy - running pain free - introducing wellness coaching - Awake Athlete season 4 podcast is coming! - Next stop: Malibu Triathlon and Super League Namaste- Jess

Melissa is the newest addition to YogiTriathlete's coaching team. She started with us on January 1st, and her magnetism as a coach has attracted spectacular athletes to her roster so far. We love having her on the team alongside coaches Daniel, Chef Lynda, BJ, and myself. The other piece we love so much is how it all went down. Melissa and I connected on Instagram a few years ago, and I had the honor of spending seven nights and eight days with her on a retreat last year in Costa Rica. Of course, I now understand that experience poured the foundation for our expanded relationship that began last fall. On November 28th, we launched the OH Show, announcing we wanted to hire a running coach. On December 5th, Melissa posted on Instagram that she was looking to take on athletes for coaching, a post I saw the following day. I immediately sent her a DM to see if she was open to talking, which she answered absolutely! But even before her response, I knew the person I described in my ask to the universe was just delivered. However, in all that is universal love, Melissa is everything we asked for and more. She is a long-distance runner, coach, triathlete, and herbalist currently finishing her Master's in Clinical Herbal Medicine at the Maryland University of Integrated Health. Melissa's coaching surrounds running, strength training, cross-training, mobility, whole-body wellness, and herbal consultations for athletes who seek optimal human performance. Her philosophy focuses on "pushing the boundaries we draw for ourselves and stepping past resistance." Thank you to our patrons who support this podcast and the Awake Athlete podcast on Patreon. Guiding athletes to supersede the limitations of the mind is what YogiTriathlete was founded on. Living a more vibrant life through a clear mind is synonymous with better performance, and as Beej and I continue to clean up our inner mud, we have realized a better world from the inside out. I'm so excited about our conversation today because our guest aligns with our core belief: to reach athletic potential, we must train our minds with the same, if not more, tenacity as we train our bodies. Lauren Ammon started swimming at age five and nearly two decades later retired after graduating college and swimming for a D1 school. She has an impressive single sport legacy, but what truly piques our interest is that she walked away feeling she never reached her potential, like she had more to give. This dissatisfaction led to a personal quest to figure out how to overcome the obstacle of her mind and the eventual creation of Performance Reimagined, where she supports elite student-athletes to train their minds and overcome the mental blocks that keep them from their potential. If you enjoy the ongoing theme of mind training on this podcast, settle in because this is another deep conversation. In this episode, we discuss: - impact of the Olympics in 2020 - perspective on why she was better at practice swimming - breaking the cycle of perfection - taking your power back to make choices - being right where you are supposed to be - thoughts lead to emotions, lead to choices - when did you become ‘aware' - leaving corporate America - working through tough swim sets, facing doubt and fear - stress or pause - attachment to the result or outcome - when reaching your goal is not enough - being conditioned for negativity - breathing practices for athletes - building self-worth but through experience - secret weapons for athletes Namaste- Jess
Today we welcome all of the YogiTriathlete coaches to the show. We have come together to answer questions and dive into topics we've been working with athletes on as they endeavor to achieve their goals through physical, mental, and nutritional training. BJ and I are sharing the mic with Liz McHutcheon or Running On Venti, Daniel Reintjes, otherwise known as the Vegan Burrito, and Lynda Layng or Chef Lynda, as she is known in the Awake Kitchen. We hope you enjoy the unique voice of each coach as we deliver a similar message on the topic discussed. In this episode we discuss: - starting from right here - pay attention to what you're doing while you're doing it - nutrition practices and/or diets - what's the next best thing I can do? - tiny changes are the profound changes - does goal setting hurt or help you? - releasing the timeline - how to come back to the moment - letting go of rules - nutrition hacks - detachment vs not caring - healthy meal prep hacks for athletes - go-to sauces - how to fill your cup before serving others - transition wisely Thank you to all patrons on Patreon for keeping this podcast commercial-free, we are grateful for you. We are grateful to have professional triathlete Amber Ferreira with us for this episode. We've followed the story of this well-accomplished athlete for many years. Amber has raced triathlon as a professional for over a decade and has stepped onto more podiums already than most will ever experience, including 4x at the National Snowshoe Champion. But Amber is not only a pro triathlete, as many overachievers tend to do; she wears many hats. She holds a doctorate in physical therapy; she is a coach, a business owner, a wife, and most recently, mom to Charlie. She is the head coach and owner of Granite State Endurance which has a large contingency within New Hampshire and the country. She hosts training camps and team races throughout the year. Amber has a contagious laugh and an easy-to-be-with demeanor. We hope you find that same. Thank you for listening and for all those who support the podcast through Patreon. In this episode, we are joined by fellow Team YogiTriathlete athletes Chris Elmore and Daniel Reintjes. We recorded this episode about 48 hours after the completion of Ironman 70.3 Oregon. We love to capture these conversations when we still have fatigue in the brain, soreness in the body, and relative remembrances of the feels of race day. Chris or CJaye is the creator of Endureus, which helps organizations protect the planet by donating all proceeds from products, donations, and earnings collected through Endureus initiatives. He has a huge YouTube following and just completed documenting his 16-week build-up to Oregon. We highly recommend checking out Chris's offerings. Also with us is Coach Daniel one of our triathlon coaches here at YogiTriathlete and the founder of Vegan Powered Athlete. This powerful movement expressed itself through Daniel after the sudden loss of his mom to chronic lifestyle disease. VPA's mission is to influence, educate and provide resources for an athletic vegan lifestyle, so nobody has to face the pain of losing a loved one to a disease that is highly preventable with proper diet and lifestyle changes. These two athletes are not just crushing workouts and races, but BJ and I feel honored to say that they are both furthering YogiTriathlete's mission to create a better world. Coach “Beej” has a zeal for life that is infectious and a deep passion for serving others to achieve their greatest dreams. He works one-on-one with his athletes to empower them to be active participants in their process of physical and mental growth. When he's not swimming, biking, or running, he's found in the yoga studio standing on his head, making room to answer life's epic questions. BJ is a 17x Ironman triathlete, Ironman and 70.3 World Championship Qualifier, Boston Marathon qualifier, triathlon, and running coach with major street cred. He is a 200-hr Live Love Teach trained yoga instructor and certified in Plant-Based Nutrition from the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies. Being aware that our thoughts are packets of potential is critical to succeeding in realizing our goals because how we water those seeds of potential weighs heavily on how our reality plays out. The truth is that most people in our modern society are fighting for their limitations which comes from a deep fear that they may be a great success. And although that seems contradictory to an athlete's character, self-sabotage fueled by fear of success is commonplace these days.In this episode, I share a story of how I recognized fear of success within my own story and the signs and symptoms that parallel fear of success. Also, I touch upon how changes in the racing environment are not helping us let our yes be yes. Fear of success manifests in ways that we are not conscious of, behaviors and patterns that are sure signs of self-sabotage and fear of success. Typically it occurs when we are stepping into the unknown, but it is essential to remember that although the unknown can be scary, this realm is where the potential for our success exists. The study referenced in this episode: Science has shown that mindfulness is linked to present moment focus which is the essence of the psychology of peak performance in sport (Jackson & Csikszentmihalyi, 1999; Ravizza, 2002).Interested in joining other like-minded athletes on the path to mastery? One of our earliest missions with YogiTriathlete was to spread awareness that living a more vibrant life is within reach for all. I think we can all agree that our general nutrition has a large stake in the vibrancy of our life. After all, what we put in us, becomes us. So needless to say, we're super excited to be having a conversation with yet another, spectacular physician from Plant-Based TeleHealth. Dr. Amy Zacharias is a board-certified family and lifestyle medicine physician who realized that the most important aspect of her job was to assist her patients in preventing disease. As she opened to this mindset, she realized that it was not just food but other lifestyle components that equal a healthy life. Today, she finds great interest when working with patients to reach their ideal weight and athletes to reach peak performance by following a whole-food plant-based diet. We hope you enjoy the show! In this episode, we discuss. - Amy's journey to a plant-based diet - slowing down and be mindful to make lasting change - gratitude practice - benefits of a plant-based diet for athletes - removing oil from your diet - happiness factor - permission to not be perfect - not eating enough calories - milk doesn't do the body good - misinformation from coaches - future of medicine and nutrition - patients have the power to help themselves - "I wish I had done this sooner" We hope you enjoy the show. We are so excited to have Michael Wardian back in the house today; we first sat down with Mike in 2016 for episode 25, where we talked about relentlessly pursuing passion and pushing the limits of what has been made possible. Mike is an international shipbroker, speaker, coach, business owner, dad to two boys and two vizslas, Rosie and Bash, and of course, a very well-known ultra runner, which almost feels too blah of a descriptive for this guy. His resume on UltraSignUp dates back to 1998. Anyone who knows of Mike never seems to be surprised at his FKT attempts, robust race schedule, or solo adventures like his Guinness book world record attempt for the fastest known time for a marathon in a highland dress. Still, I have to say, his win at last year's Quarantine Backyard Ultra was one of the most epic challenges I've witnessed, thanks to social media. It was a virtual race that started with over 2,400 runners from more than 50 countries. It ended over 60 hours later with only two runners left, Mike and Radek Brunner, who missed the start of the 63rd lap, making Mike the winner after 422 kilometers of running. As I said, the resume is massive, and we're super pumped for you to listen in and hear what he is relentlessly brewing up for the future. In this episode, we discuss: - winning the quarantine backyard in 2020 - FKT for the run across America - coming back from injury - injury as an opportunity - grow incrementally and stay consistent - do weird things that you wouldn't normally do - limiting yourself because you don't want to learn something - mental game crossover of ultra running and chess - perspective on engineered nutrition for racing - pickleball training for a high altitude ultra - unique challenges of a graduate-level 100-miler - running on the moon Thank you so much for being so supportive of the show; if it has made a positive impact, please consider pledging on Patreon, where you will be assisting us in keeping the YogiTriathlete and Awake Athlete podcasts commercial-free. Any amount helps and is greatly appreciated. Namaste- Jess
Jackson Foster is our guest today and someone who has lived an odyssey that is undoubtedly against the grain of consensus thinking in just shy of three decades on this earth. Despite growing up in the concrete jungle of Los Angeles, Jackson always felt a deep pull to be outdoors. During his high school years, he found the High Mountain Institute, where he spent a semester connecting with nature on a deeper level, and he was hooked. Returning to his upscale private high school only further confirmed his need to take the road less traveled in life. His biggest adventures started between high school and college when he rode his bike across America, traveled to Asia for a backpacking adventure, volunteered at an orangoutang orphanage, and apprenticed with a master potter. All of which sealed his knowing that he had to continue to live an alternative and adventurous lifestyle. Jackson is a visionary who is bringing his visions to manifestation. He is a yogi, a vegan advocate, a farmer, most recently an ultrarunner, and a voice for all to take risks and dream extreme. In this episode, we discuss: - climate change and policy around the environment - embracing trouble & experiences - try many new things to find who you are - follow your childhood dreams - detach from expectations - his longest run yet - lifestyle of gratitude - 50k fueling as a vegan - Costa Rica permaculture farming - upcoming retreat offerings - Maggie - the vegan dog Thank you so much for being so supportive of the show; if it has made a positive impact, please consider pledging on Patreon, where you will be assisting us in keeping the YogiTriathlete and Awake Athlete podcasts commercial-free.
