Earlier this week, leading Republican prospect Donald Trump journeyed to the Long Island town of Massapequa, New York. His mission was to be by the side of Stephanie Diller, now a widow, and their toddler son. The Diller family was grappling with the sharp sting of tragedy as their beloved Jonathan, an NYPD officer, had fallen in the line of duty in Queens on Monday, tragically shot down by a hindered deviant repeat offender. Trump, in the aftermath of his visit, didn't shy away from expressing his views to the press. His earnest call was for a swing back to the heydays when 'law and order' reigned supreme, hinting at his intent to lead this return to order. Earlier accounts from the DC Enquirer clarified the tragic events that lead to Officer Diller's untimely demise, as he and his partner had been otherwise engaged in a routine traffic patrol, stopping a vehicle unlawfully parked at a bus stop with two suspects inside. Unfortunately, their responsibility saw them face an unexpected retaliation. One of the suspects, a 34-year-old individual identified as Guy Rivera, was found unlawfully armed. Fearing yet another prison sentence, Rivera pulled the trigger, catching Diller just underneath his safety gear. Rivera's ill-fated attempt at evading law enforcement was met with retaliation as Diller's partner returned fire, inflicting a critical injury upon him. As Rivera was brought under control, an immediate effort was launched to save Diller, who was hastily escorted to Jamaica Hospital. However, despite the best efforts of the medical team, he succumbed to his devastating injuries. Rivera, who had been taken into custody at the same hospital, was listed as stable despite his priors - a lengthening list of 21 arrests.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We talk about how it can be (counterintuitively) harder to advocate for our dogs around loved ones than strangers, that it's okay to focus on humans-only activities sometimes, what our visits have looked like lately, and my very best advice for anyone who gets overwhelmed at social gatherings

9 - 21 - 23 VISITING FAMILY AND IS JAY THE BAD GUY by Maine's Coast 93.1
Summer is here, which means family vacations and, often, an increase in the time we spend with our extended family. Have you ever found yourself reverting to a younger version of yourself when you're around your family? I know we have! It's a complex dynamic that many of us grapple with. In today's episode, Andrea and Jessica get honest about how these dynamics can often overwhelm us, leading to behaviors that seem out of sync with our adult selves. We introduce you to Internal Family Systems, as people, NOT as therapists, to better explain our different parts and their protective roles. Throughout the episode, Jessica dives deeper into the psyche of her 14-year-old self. A protective part that often shows up when visiting family. We all have that adolescent within us, scared and vulnerable, stepping up to shield us from perceived threats. But do they still need to shoulder that burden? We discuss how to speak to these parts and reassure them they're safe now. Lastly, we explore the paradox of our need for connection and the tendency to withdraw when navigating family dynamics. We emphasize how understanding our needs, communicating them effectively, and extending compassion towards ourselves can make a difference. We also highlight the power that lies within us in influencing how others perceive us. Join us on this journey of self-discovery, and vulnerability, as we learn to embrace our younger selves with compassion and understanding. Welcome back to the Open and Honest Show, where BJ and I dive into life, racing, training, and coaching every month. Sometimes we turn off the microphones and feel uneasy because with honesty comes vulnerability. But time and again, as we breathe through the discomfort and hold steady to our promise, to be honest, we find that vulnerability has an important place in our roles as coaches and athletes. Without it, it's hard to be fully open and honest. We hope you enjoy this month's episode of the OH Show and please let us know your questions or topics of delight so we can dive in next month. In this episode we discuss: - watering seeds of potential - easeful efforting - a new way of training the mind - love over ego-driven need to be right - selfless service - east coast visit - one-day yoga retreat recap - thank you Patreon community - training camp January 12-16, 2023 - Big Bear Lake race recap - racing at elevation - tiny house living - consistency is the cornerstone of success - the "all or nothing" mindset Thank you to all patrons on Patreon for keeping this podcast commercial-free, we are grateful for you. Lately, a lot of people who grew up with childhood trauma are going “no contact” with their families and loved ones. I hear people talking about it with relief and sometimes a sense of accomplishment. For many people, the abuse was egregious and may be ongoing; in these cases, walking away for good may be necessary and courageous. For others, going no-contact is an emergency form of self-protection that, over time, may not need to be permanent. Heather just got back from her first vacation as an "Intuitive Eater," and she learned a lot about herself and her food habits. Today, Heather talks to Erin Todd and Char-Lee Cassel of the Intuitive Eating for Christian Women podcast. Heather's coaches take her on an unexpected journey talking about food, body, family, approval, disappointments and so much more. Here Are Some Places We Go in our Discussion of Intuitive Eating on Vacation: How eating breakfast changed things on vacation for Heather. How Heather didn't feel "addicted" or out of control with sweets even under stress. How Heather had been operating under results from a decade-old test about food sensitivities and avoiding things. The relational aspect of food on vacation and how Heather's recognizing some unloving tendencies. How to handle comments/compliments or lack thereof with family members. Breaking away from the need for approval from family members approval of our appearance. The pressure to make vacation perfect and how that can spoil our time away! Why do we feel like we need a vacation to be "the best" time of our lives? How to keep your cool and not be super triggered if you find yourself in the middle of dieting conversations. What does it look like to give grace to family members that aren't on the same page with food? Why dieters love the food freedom of vacation, and how Intuitive Eating can give us that all year long. Takeaways from this episode: - Caregivers should prepare family and let them know what to expect, so the holidays are enjoyable for everyone. - You may need to modify how you interact with your loved one. Their diagnosis may change how they express themselves and relate to others. - Prepare a place away from the main action where your loved one can enjoy company on their own terms without becoming overstimulated. - Find a way to let your loved one be part of the preparations in a way that fits their desires and abilities. - Alzheimer's is a brain disease and not only impacts memory and communication, but also their senses. I have always wondered what small-town life was like outside of Berlin in the GDR. In this episode of Radio GDR, Bill Blosen and I sit down to talk about his experiences traveling to Görlitz, a small medieval town on the East German-Polish border. Photos at www.radiogdr.com/30 He went there to visit family as a young man in the 1980s before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Bill and I both work in technology and recently got to talking about our respective language skills. When Bill said he spoke German, I mentioned my recent travels to Germany and interest in the GDR and was pleasantly surprised to discover his personal journey behind the Iron Curtain. He tells us about his grandparents' concern over approaching Soviet soldiers during World War II, their experience with shared housing after the founding of the GDR, his travels through checkpoints at the Inner German border and on the cobblestone Reichsautobahn to Görlitz and the lessons those trips taught him about gratefulness and freedom. From East German speed radars to tips on getting blue jeans past pesky border guards, Bill's story will fascinate you.

Maintaining practice is a must for yoga and meditation teachers, as well as serious practitioners of all sorts who are interested in spiritual growth. Establishing and maintaining the habit of practicing regularly is often hard won. It doesn’t take much to disrupt a daily routine, so what happens when holidays arrive? What happens when we travel for work or go on vacation? How does our practice life fare when we are among family we rarely see, or who don’t understand—or worse, don’t value—our path? Knowing that consistency is key, we need to be clear about the circumstances that crowd out opportunities to practice or that tend to challenge our dedication, as well as the strategies that help us honor our commitment as practitioners. In this episode we share our stories and approaches from standing meditation in the shower to practicing in airport corners and keeping the peace with family. We also consider issues around practicing in public (beaches and airports) and identifying and attending studio yoga classes in faraway cities.Share your tips for maintaining your practice outside your normal rourtine on Facebook and Instagram, or send us a note at feedback@skillfulmeanspodcast.com. Tag us at @skillfulmeanspodast and we’ll share your tips with our listeners. Everyone wants a perfect holiday. The candlelit dinner with the gorgeous turkey and delicious pumpkin pie dessert; the immaculately wrapped presents with bows that were made by a bowdabra; the family memories of adorably dressed children with matching holiday outfits; they are all part of the Norman Rockwell painting version of Christmas you aspire to create each year. Christmas is the holiday of holidays. Between the presents, the food, the crazy relatives – it can be super stressful to try to make Christmas perfect. How do you manage your visiting family and enjoy the most stressful holiday of the year? Listen or read more at https://www.hidethechocolate.com/perfect-christmas-with-visiting-family/

Stay on Track While Visiting Family and friends is a challenge most of us have faced at one time or another, and for some it's a constant struggle. Because there is so many challenges when visiting family and friends when you're trying to make lifestyle changes for your health, I thought I'd put together 5 tips that will help. #1. Be Up Front The best thing you can do when making lifestyle style changes which include starting to workout or be more active on a regular basis, or making healthier nutrition choices is to be upfront. Tell your friends, tell you family. You'll need them for support at one time or another so don't hide this from them. This will make traveling to their home for a gathering that much easier. They'll know ahead of time that you are making these changes and will most likely accommodate. #2. Bring Your Own Food There's nothing wrong with bringing a dish of your own. Even if your family or friends decline, bring something anyways. Tell them you felt bad not bringing something and this way you know there will be at least one healthy option there. #3. Eat Before You Go We all know what it's like to starve ourselves before a big gathering because we know there will be tons of food there. Remember that many times the food choices aren't healthy, which is why it's important to eat something before you go. If you eat something before hand you won't be so inclined to overindulge in the not so healthy appetizers and even meal. #4. Plan to Leave at a Certain Time We know very well that at the end of a meal and especially late into the evening they don't bring out healthy snacks, drinks or alternatives. This is a good time to leave and if you plan before hand this won't be so difficult when the time comes. #5. Have Food Ready for When You Get Home If you have food ready for when you get home you won't stick around for that extra dessert, you have an extra serving of mashed potatoes and gravy thinking you're not going to eat again before the night is over, because you have a meal planned. This tip right here will change your entire outlook so be sure to have a meal ready for when you get home. "Honor your father and mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and that it go well with you in the land the Lord your God is giving you." ~ Deut 5:16 We each have a family that we have come from, our family of origin, and sometimes they are very different from us. Because of this, visiting with grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and in-laws can be stressful, but connecting with extended family is extremely important for the well-being of our children. In this podcast, we talk about the importance of visiting family, but also some issues that couples need to discuss ahead of time. “Life is short, family is forever”
