Since she was a child, Shilpi Kapoor has always been an independent spirit that has defied conformity and taking paths of least resistance. This plus her equally altruistic spirit and drive for universal accessibility, has led her to break barriers of incredible impact. In this conversation, Shilpi talks about what it was like growing up in Mumbai in the 1980's, her struggles with school, and the role her father played in helping to develop her love for coding and technology; opens up about some early entrepreneurial ventures and one of her biggest "failings," a life-changing experience during a data hacking internship that led her to starting a computer training center for the blind, and her pivot to digital accessibility testing and starting the still-thriving BarrierBreak in 2004; and dives into critical dialog on the ubiquity and universality of accessibility, how it shows up everywhere in both the digital and physical world, and the immense benefits it provides to everyone regardless of ability. Throughout, Shilpi illustrates how vital exposure is for changing attitudes and dismantling stigma, the power constant evolution can have on realizing great impact, and why it's so important to not always take the normal path in life. The Axonius solution correlates asset data from existing solutions to provide an always up-to-date inventory, uncover gaps, and automate action — giving IT and security teams the confidence to control complexity. Learn more at axonius.com/hackervalley Shilpi, can you talk about the idea behind the talk you had at CyberCon?  The inspiration behind Shilpi's conference talk was supply chain issues. Titling her talk, “Who's Protecting Your Software in Supply Chain,” Shilpi hoped to further educate and advocate for security in the supply chain process. An estimated one in two companies will experience a supply chain attack in the coming years. Instead of fearing such a statistic, Shilpi hopes her talk inspired further security action to protect our supply chains.  “One staggering fact that I read is that one in every two companies is going to have some sort of a supply chain attack in the next three years. So, who's going to look after the supply chain? Is it going to be the organization? Is it going to be your third-party vendors?” —Shilpi   Ashish, what about your talk at Cybercon? In contrast, Ashish's talk was about the triple paradox of zero trust. When talking about and implementing zero trust, Ashish realized many companies don't implement the cultural changes needed for zero trust and/or only talk about zero trust as a technology process. Zero trust has numerous layers beyond technology, and requires time and major changes in culture and technology to implement in most companies.  “I feel bad for bashing on finance, marketing, and HR teams. They're all smart people, but if you're going to add four or five layers of security for them, they almost always say, ‘I just want to do my job. I don't really care about this. It's your job to do security.'” —Ashish   Where would you recommend starting when it comes to trying to implement the ideas in your respective talks? When push comes to shove about where cyber companies can start first with supply chain and zero trust, Ashish and Shilpi agree that companies have to discuss business priorities. When company leaders can take the opportunity to look at and understand their cyber hygiene, the next steps might look very different from another company's tactics. Knowing what a business has is the foundational piece that impacts any new process in cyber.  “If I were to go back to the first principle of what we do with cybersecurity professionals, one of the biggest assets that we're all trying to protect is data. You can't protect what you can't see, that's the foundational piece.” —Ashish   For anyone that wasn't able to make the conference, what is one thing that you would want to share with the audience at home?  There were a lot of conversations taking place at Cybercon this year. Ashish wants the audience at home to know that cloud native, zero trust, supply chain, and leadership positions like CISOs were the main themes in many talks, panels, and conversations. Shilpi wants those who couldn't attend to watch out for more talks and conversations about cyber from those outside of the industry to understand that the issues impacting cyber influence the world.  “I think there's that interest about cybersecurity being more than just a cybersecurity problem. Cybersecurity is not just a technical problem, it's a societal problem, a cultural problem. I very much agree, because a lot of the things that we're dealing with impacts everyone.” —Shilpi --------------- Links: Keep up with our guest Ashish Rajan on LinkedIn Keep up with our guest Shilpi Bhattacharjee on LinkedIn Listen to Ashish and Shilpi's Cloud Security Podcast Connect with Ron Eddings on LinkedIn and Twitter Connect with Chris Cochran on LinkedIn and Twitter Purchase a HVS t-shirt at our shop Continue the conversation by joining our Discord Check out Hacker Valley Media and Hacker Valley Studio

Purpose comes in unexpected ways, but as I reflect on my life experience, I see a million moments that logically led to where I sit today. For our guest today Shaleen Shah, it started many decades ago with a love for horses. A love that led to a rescue of a horse named Haa-lee led to another rescue and eventually to the creation of Luvin Arms Animal Sanctuary located in Erie, Colorado. To date, Luvin Arms has rescued over 800 animals from circumstances of neglect, abuse, and the systematic terror of animal agriculture. They have exponentially raised awareness among humans that animals are individuals with families, emotions, and community needs. They have taught tens of thousands that these sacred beings have the same right as people to live peaceful and loving lives in their natural habitats. Steeped in the principle of Ahimsa, Luvin Arms is dedicated to a way of life that embraces nonviolence toward all living beings. As stated on their website, they provide exceptional lifelong social, emotional, and cognitive care to rescued farmed animals, and advocate for those who have not been rescued by sharing our residents' stories to inspire, educate, and empower others to embrace a more compassionate and sustainable lifestyle. Shaleen and his wife Shilpi founded Luvin Arms in 2015 with zero ideas of how to build a sanctuary. They faced an extraordinary task ahead but could not deny the circumstances that unfolded or the knowing that the universe was asking them to step into a completely new purpose in life. So with a deep calling on their hearts, two young children, and a mountain of obstacles ahead of them, they went for it. We are so grateful for the conversation before you; admittedly, my heart was deeply touched while researching for this show, and I shed a few tears along the way. Thank you for tuning in. In this episode we discuss: - a day in the life at the Farm Sanctuary - dairy industry practices - discovering and figuring out veganism - cheese addiction - rescuing horses from auction - cannot deny calls from the universe - how Luvin Arms was born - scariest moments in the transition from entrepreneurship to saving animal lives - stories of first rescues - animals learning to trust humans again - commitment to the practice of ahimsa - compassion for all beings - purity is within us, peace is within us - inspiration for the creation of Open Sanctuary - how to start a sanctuary - the purpose of antibiotics in the farming industry - living a full ahimsa life Thank you to all patrons on Patreon for keeping this podcast commercial-free, we are grateful for you. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is merging the Films Division (FD) the National Film Archives of India (NFAI), the Children's Film Society of India (CFSI), and the Directorate of Film Festivals (DFF) under the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC). The first four are public-funded bodies while the latter is a for-profit company that has been incurring losses. The four bodies are responsible for various functions such as production of documentaries and short films, organisation of film festivals and preservation of film archives. Even as the merger is underway, it is unclear what the end result will look like. In this episode of The Suno India Show, reporter Suryatapa Mukherjee speaks to Shilpi Gulati, a national award-winning documentary filmmaker and academic. Shilpi helped draft the letter from the film fraternity that highlighted the concerns with this merger and urged the government to reconsider. She talks about how this will affect the future of films in our country.
