Good afternoon, I'm _____ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 65-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 23,449 on turnover of 4.8-billion N-T. The market rebounded on Tuesday after a slump a session earlier as artificial intelligence-related stocks were the center of investor focus on the back of a rise in Nvidia's share price on Wall Street overnight. Investors took cues from a 2.87-per cent increase in Nvidia shares on Wall Street, but the main board failed to sustain its early gains by the end of the session on the capped upturn by semiconductor stocks .. .. which dealers are attributing to lingering concerns over possible massive tariffs on chips by U-S President Donald Trump. Ministers hold talks to promote cultural diplomacy in Japan, Europe Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung and Culture Minister Li Yuan have held talks to discuss "cultural diplomacy" -- with a particular focus on the upcoming Expo 2025 in Japan and cultural events in Europe. According to the foreign ministry, it was the first time the two ministries have held minister-level talks and Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu and Deputy Culture Minister Sue Wang were also in attendance. The ministry says, both sides talked about combining their resources to boost Taiwan's visibility (能見度) on the world stage and one focus was the upcoming Osaka World Expo, which will be held between April and October. Another topic on the agenda was how Taiwan could took advantage of the National Palace Museum's upcoming exhibitions in the Czech Republic and France later this year. CDC reporting highest weekly flu-related medical visits in a decade The Centers for Disease Control says the number of outpatient (門診) and emergency visits due to flu-like illness recorded last week was the highest number for the same period since the 2015-2016 flu season. According to the C-D-C, a total of 181,995 flu-like illness-related outpatient and emergency visits were reported from February 2 to 8. C-D-C Epidemic Intelligence Center Director Kuo Hung-wei says the number of flu cases with severe complications is also rising, with 128 severe cases and 28 flu-related deaths recorded from February 4 to this past Monday. Most of those cases were linked to H-1-N-1 infections. Russia Frees American Prisoner Russia has freed American detainee (被拘留者) Marc Fogel. The 63-year-old school teacher was released from prison on Tuesday, according to US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz. He'd been arrested for the illegal possession of cannabis back in 2021 and was given a 14-year prison sentence, which the United States viewed as "wrongful." Benji Hyer reports. UN Warns of Congo Displacement The U.N. says more than 110-thousand displaced people have in recent days left settlement camps in eastern Congo's cities controlled by Rwanda-backed rebels after the rebels were accused of forced camp closures. The U.N.'s humanitarian aid coordination agency said Tuesday that the M23 rebels issued a 72-hour ultimatum for people to leave the camps but later clarified that such movement is voluntary. Associated Press journalists witnessed some of the displaced people packing up what is left of their belongings and dismantling makeshift shelters. The forced camp closures have worsened (惡化) what is already one of the world's largest humanitarian crises. At least 500-thousand people have reportedly been displaced in the region following the M23's advance. That was the I.C.R.T. John chats with veteran Hong Kong-based journalist and author of The Island (2024) Mark O'Neill, who tells us what Taiwan was like in the early 1980s, when he first came to study Chinese. Despite a mysterious knife attack and various authoritarian elements (such as “mail boxes” for reporting spies and subversives), he loved the country. Over the next four decades, he made numerous trips back, witnessing and reporting on Taiwan's transformation from one party rule to an admirable democracy. The Island is not Mark's first Taiwan book – earlier works include ones on Buddhist charity Tzu Chi and the National Palace Museum – so he brings both depth and breadth to his entertaining look at the country.

Harrisons dramatiska historia

The treasures of the National Palace Museum, originally the Forbidden City, followed China's path. They escaped the invading Japanese by leaving Beijing, first for Shanghai, then Nanjing and then followed southern, central and northern routes to Sichuan and safety. The Chinese government followed a similar path, as did countless Chinese individuals and families. Japanese bombers followed these refugees west, devastating China. But the Chinese people, Chinese government, Chinese culture and the antiquities from the National Palace Museum survived the Sino-Japanese War. This is the story of China's survival during the war.Topics like wartime inflation, the Chinese victory at Taierzhuang and the government decision to breach the Yellow River dikes and to flood Chinese land are also discussed.Image Source: National Palace MuseumMain Source: Brookes, Adam. A new branch of the Palace Museum has been under construction since December 30, 2022, set to be a brand-new addition to the national museum complex housed in the Forbidden City, in Beijing. The whole construction area of the new branch is more than 100,000 square meters. Work is expected to be completed in 2025, in time to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Palace Museum.2022年12月30日,立项筹备已近十年之久的故宫博物院北院区正式破土动工。 The Palace Museum is built on the Forbidden City, the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It is the largest ancient architecture complex in China with more than 1,000 cultural relic buildings, covering an area of more than 100 hectares. At present, over a quarter of the Palace Museum is used as offices or warehouses. After the new branch is built, many cultural relics will be placed there. Museum officials said that the northern branch will provide much bigger spaces for exhibition curators and relic conservators. Du Haijiang, deputy director of the Palace Museum and chief supervisor of construction, said in an interview with China Central Television broadcast, "It's the key to solving problems faced by the Forbidden City." The collection of cultural relics in the Palace Museum is large in number, rich in categories, and highly precious, which is unique in the world. The Palace Museum has 1.86 million pieces of cultural relics in its collection. With time elapsing, the materials of calligraphy, painting, textiles and other cultural relics will gradually dim, and traditional adhesive will fail, which increases the demand for the protection and restoration of cultural relics. However, the artifact restoration is subject to many constraints. Qu Feng, deputy director of the relic restoration department of the National Palace Museum, said that the restoration of cultural relics depends on seasons. Spring and autumn are relatively good seasons for relic restoration because the temperature and humidity are more appropriate. Things will change when the new branch is built. Du said, the new branch will help solve the museum's lack of space for the restoration and repair part of the cultural relics. In addition, visitors to the new branch will be able to view the artifact restoration process and gain first-hand experience of the workers' exquisite techniques. The conditions for exhibitions will be greatly improved as well. Now it is estimated that only 10,000 cultural relics can be moved out of the museum's warehouses for public viewing each year. The new branch was designed to house 12 exhibition halls within a display area of around 35,000 square meters. Du said, "After the completion of the new northern branch, the number of relics on display each year will increase to 20,000 to 30,000." In addition to that, the Palace Museum itself is also a cultural relic. Sun Miao, deputy director of the exhibition department of the Palace Museum, introduced the Palace Museum as the world's largest and best-preserved wooden palace complex. When holding exhibitions, the top priority is to protect the Palace Museum itself. After repeated discussions and rigorous analysis, the construction site is settled on the north side of the Cuijiayao Reservoir in Beijing's Haidian District. It is a piece of land with a natural look. Though the new branch is not boxy as the Palace Museum, its designing inspiration comes from the traditional features of the Palace Museum, including elements like the skyline and the central axis. The new branch of the Palace Museum will fully integrate modern technology and green architecture, becoming a modern exhibition space with multiple functions to provide relic preservation, restoration work, and visitor services.

The song is "Step Aside" (擱淺), which was first released in 2004. The list is based on the 10 most requested songs at Party World KTV clubs in Taiwan for Oct. 25-31. The PTT member also observed that half of the songs are by artists from China. Chinese singer Xiao Ah Qi (小阿七) seized the No. 1 spot with her song "Once upon a time" (從前說). In second place was "Red Scarf" (如果可以) by WeiBird (韋禮安), followed by Power Station's (動力火車) "Love me true" (我很好騙), Zhang Yuan's (張遠) "Jia Bin" (嘉賓), Ren Ran's (任然) "Fei Niao He Chan" (飛鳥和蟬) rounding out the top five. In sixth place was Crowd Lu's (盧廣仲) "Your Name Engraved Herein" (刻在我心底的名字), followed by the aforementioned "Step Aside" by Jay Chou, and Jing Long's (井朧) "Bu Shan" (不刪). Taking the 10th spot was A Rong (阿冗) with his song "Yu Wo Wu Guan" (與我無關). What is your go-to song at KTVs?What's your favorite memory of the National Palace Museum? Powered by Firstory Hosting

New Perspectives on the Zheng He Voyages: A Conversation with Sean Cronan

In this episode, Sean talks about some of the new scholarships and perspectives on the famous Zheng He voyages. Zheng He is widely known to history as the eunuch admiral who led several large-scale voyages to Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean. For many Chinese, the story of Zheng He and his travels to the Indian Ocean (鄭和下西洋) is often seen as a symbol of China's friendship and diplomatic and commercial engagement with Southeast Asian, the Indian Ocean, and east African polities. For many in the West, Zheng He's voyages represent a period in time when China dominated the maritime world. But for both Chinese and Western audiences, the end of the voyages in the 1430s marked the end of China's engagement with the maritime world and is often viewed as the Ming's turn towards isolationism. However, new scholarships have emerged challenging this narrative. Sean discusses how these scholarships have led us to reevaluate the Zheng He voyages and what we can learn about the early Ming and early Ming diplomacy from them. Disclaimer: We apologize for some of the audio issues in this episode. A few parts may sound a bit distorted. We're now in the Best 20 Chinese History Podcasts on Feedspot! Check the list out here. Contributors: Sean Cronan Sean Cronan is a Ph.D. student at the University of California, Berkeley. His work focuses on East and Southeast Asian diplomatic encounters from the thirteenth to eighteenth centuries, tracing the development of new shared diplomatic norms following the Mongol conquests of Eurasia, as well as how rulers and scholar-officials in the Ming (1368- 1644) and Qing Dynasties (1644-1911) institutionalized and challenged these new norms. He explores how ideas of multipolarity, regime legitimacy, and the makeup of the interstate order came under debate throughout the Mongol Empire, Ming China, the Qing Empire, Chosŏn Korea, Dai Viet (Northern Vietnam), Japan, the Ayutthaya Kingdom of Thailand, the Pagan Kingdom of Burma, and beyond. He works with sources in Chinese (literary Sinitic), Japanese, Thai, Burmese, Manchu, and Dutch. Yiming Ha Yiming Ha is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His current research is on military mobilization and state-building in China between the thirteenth and seventeenth centuries, focusing on how military institutions changed over time, how the state responded to these changes, the disconnect between the center and localities, and the broader implications that the military had on the state. His project highlights in particular the role of the Mongol Yuan in introducing an alternative form of military mobilization that radically transformed the Chinese state. He is also interested in military history, nomadic history, comparative Eurasian state-building, and the history of maritime interactions in early modern East Asia. He received his BA from UCLA and his MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Taipei, Taiwan-8+3 Awesome Things To See/Do

Taipei, Taiwan is a vibrant city that is rich in culture, history, street food, and religion. It’s safe, super-friendly, convenient and probably undervalued compared to the super Asian city destinations of Hong Kong, Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul. Ironically many residents of those cities choose Taipei as a destination, enjoying some of those qualities that their city once had or simply lacks. Why the title 8+3 Awesome Sights To See/Do? Well most in Asia would be clued in to the significance of the number 8 and 3. In Chinese,(Mandarin), the word eight sounds similar to the word for prosper or wealth. It’s also similar sounding in Cantonese. The number 8 is an auspicious number. The number three sounds similar to the character for birth and is also considered a lucky number. There are three stages to a person’s life-birth, marriage, and death. So my wish is for prosperity and good luck for all those that visit Taipei, Taiwan and for the people of the city that have treated me with such great kindness and hospitality for the past 4 years. Would love to get your feedback on the video and ideas for future content. Also what other countries do you like to visit in Asia? Thanks again with many blessings to you!   In this episode Gary Bembridge of TipsForTravellers.com, provides a historical overview, need-to-know facts as well as inspiration, advice and tips for visiting Taipei Taiwan. This is a revisit to Taipei and has all new information and suggestions. On my recent visit I came to appreciate the city more and found new and exciting areas and sights to explore. I was struck by its modernity and energy. Although there are not many western tourists, it is a big tourist destination for Asian visitors, but was welcoming and easy for English-speakers to explore. It has a fascinating and dramatic history when the government of China fled here with around 2 million refugees after losing the fight against the Communist uprising in 1949. In the podcast hear about the must-see sights including: Taipei 101. Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, with the National Concert Hall and National Theatre in same park complex. Presidential Office Building. National Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall. Longshan Temple, Xingtian Temple and Dalongdong Baoan Temple. National Palace Museum. Taipei Zoo. Shinlin Night Market.
