Traci's career started in 1992 when she was doing fashion commercials, work for TV stations and video B movies. However, Traci's big break came when she was working on The Witch and The Lighthouse, both directed by Robert Eggers. Traci's collaboration with Eggers on these productions landed her the position on Nosferatu, Traci's third feature with this director. Traci was not always aware that her passion for makeup would turn into a career. She attended school in a small program and a lot of her experience has come from self-teaching and repetition. Today, Traci's work is multifaceted, from beauty makeup to eerie and grimy special effects makeup as seen in Nosferatu. Traci has been recognized for her work in the past receiving a few Canadian Screen Award nominations and winning the CSA for Best Makeup in 2022 for her work on the film Night Raiders. However, her most prestigious nomination to date has come from her work on Nosferatu, as Traci and her team have been nominated for the Oscar for best makeup and hairstyling. This huge achievement is only one of the exciting things coming up for Traci as she is set to begin working on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Hosted by Curator and Impact Producer Nadia Denton, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. Featuring the insights from film creatives and professionals from Sápmi, Canada and Yakutia, this episode will shine a light on the ground-breaking work of the Witness Program, a film training and mentorship programme for emerging Indigenous filmmakers from the Circumpolar Arctic that is the fruit of a collaboration between Telefilm Canada and the Arctic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF). Designed as a professional development opportunity that allows Arctic Indigenous filmmakers to share their authentic perspectives on how climate change is affecting their communities through their own storytelling and in their own filmic and spoken languages, the programme supported a first cohort of 6 filmmakers who produced 5 films and were mentored by 3 Indigenous long-feature film producers and filmmakers, under the guidance of Liisa Holmberg, CEO of the AIFF. These conversations unpack the way in which these first-hand narratives convey the sense of urgency of climate change which Arctic Indigenous communities have been witnessing for decades and the ways in which their filmmaking practices can embody acts of resistance, resilience and language revitalisation. Key to understanding these films is the notion of a worldview. The speakers, Liisa Holmberg, filmmakers Sadetło Scott and Svetlana Romanova and mentor Danis Goulet, all share their experiences of how their communities' worldview, connection and deep relationship to the land are expressed in these and other films, which they made in a context of challenges to the land and Indigenous storytelling through the compounded effects of climate change and colonization. Film commissioner Liisa Holmberg (she/her) is working in International Sámi Film Institute (ISFI) in Norway. Liisa Holmberg is a Sámi film maker originally from Finnish side of the Saamiland. She has worked in the film business as a producer, production manager and film consultant from the year 1994. Big part of her work as a film commissioner is working internationally with Indigenous film makers in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Sápmi and Russia to establish an Arctic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF). Holmberg is a member of European Film Academy from the year 2018. Sadetło Scott (she/her) is a Tłı̨chǫ Dene filmmaker, who grew up and lives in Sǫǫ̀mbak'è, Denendeh (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada). Sadetło has a B.A. in Indigenous Governance and a Certificate in Heritage and Culture from Yukon University, and Certificates in Motion Picture Production and Cinematography from Capilano University. Sadetło's work, such as “Edaxàdets'eetè” aims to educate on the importance of Indigenous language and the Indigenous experience. Svetlana Romanova (Sakha/Even) is an artist and filmmaker born in Yakutsk, the capital city of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located south of the Arctic Circle. Her practice centers on the importance of Indigenous visual language, particularly in the Arctic regions and gravitates towards critical self historization. Writer/director Danis Goulet's films have screened at festivals around the world including Berlinale, Sundance, MoMA and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Her award-winning feature NIGHT RAIDERS premiered in the Panorama section at Berlinale and also screened at TIFF in 2021. For television, Danis has recently directed for the acclaimed FX series RESERVATION DOGS. She is Cree/Metis, originally from northern Saskatchewan. The host Nadia Denton is a film industry specialist with over a decade of experience as a Curator, Impact Producer and Author. Her focus has been on cinema of the African diaspora, she specialises in Nigerian Cinema and is author of two books The Black British Filmmakers Guide to Success and The Nigerian Filmmaker's Guide to Success: Beyond Nollywood. Nadia is also an official V&A African Heritage Tour Guide. As a Partner of Choice, Telefilm Canada is a Crown corporation dedicated to the success of Canada's audiovisual industry, fostering access and excellence by delivering programs that support cultural resonance and audience engagement. With a lens of equity, inclusivity and sustainability, Telefilm bolsters dynamic companies and a range of creative talent at home and around the world. Telefilm also makes recommendations regarding the certification of audiovisual coproduction treaties to the Minister of Canadian Heritage, and administers the programs of the Canada Media Fund. Launched in 2012, the Talent Fund raises private donations which principally support emerging talent. AIFF is a film fund dedicated to films and filmmakers with Arctic Indigenous origins. We believe it's vital to spread knowledge about Indigenous cultures, climate change, the environment, and land rights by the means of art. That's why we are committed to building capacity for Arctic filmmaking. We advance filmmakers' possibilities to produce and distribute their films by funding productions and offering training programs. Our aim is to promote high-quality film projects that enhance the cultures, languages and societies of arctic Indigenous peoples. Part of our mission is also to support cooperation among Indigenous filmmakers. We bring together the most talented filmmakers, help them to achieve the best possible production terms and encourage co-production and exchange of expertise. The Witness Program is a professional development opportunity that allows Arctic Indigenous filmmakers to share how climate change is affecting their communities, to tell their own stories, and to meet and work with an international network of Indigenous filmmakers. This initiative aims to empower Indigenous filmmakers across the Arctic through training and workshops. The Berlinale's European Film Market is the first international film market of the year, where the film industry starts its business. Industry Insights - The EFM Podcast puts a spotlight on highly topical and trendsetting industry issues, thereby creating a compass for the forthcoming film year. AUNTIE: Wa'tkwanonhweráton Sewakwékon. On this edition of The Aunties Dandelion we visit with Danis Goulet – a Cree-Metis, award-winning director and screenwriter who is best known for her 2021 film Night Raiders which is set in a dystopian future. The widely popular movie had the highest budget of any Indigenous-led Canadian film and stars Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers as a mother who joins a resistance movement to save her daughter. In Night Raiders – as in all of her films – Danis focuses on how Indigenous worldview can bring new insight and practice to an industry largely devoid of human care and community. DANIS: The film industry was built to exploit and so if you want to work in the film industry. So if you want to go into the film industry how do we do this in a way that is driven by values and then obviously in Indigenous production you'd be looking at what are your values that come from your community or your specific culture that can inform the film process.  AUNTIE: Danis spent years advocating for Indigenous creators in the film industry and co-authored a 2013 report for Telefilm with Kerry Swanson that helped lay the ground work for funding, offices and initiatives that now support Native filmmakers – including The Aunties Dandelion – Nya:wen. Danis is a passionate visual storyteller who creates strong matriarchal characters and weaves her own Cree language into her productions as a spiritual guide. DANIS: It is good for the spirit and any time there is a chance to put it on screen its like those are my favourite things to shoot to hear it. To commit it to screen where you know it is going to live on through this medium.  AUNTIE: I'm Kahstoserakwathe and we are Yéthi Nihsténha ne Tekarónyakénare. The Aunties Dandelion. We're focused on revitalizing our communities through stories of land, language, and relationships. And we want to say Nyá:wenkò:wa – or big thanks – to Canada's Indigenous Screen Office – teyonhkiwihstekénha – for making this podcast possible through their New Media fund.  We make space here for real conversations to unfold like when we visit in our communities. So take a breath, make some tea –  and listen to your Aunties. And when you are done – please follow us, provide some feedback, and share these visits with others. It helps us continue these visits together.

Written and directed by Danis Goulet, who is Cree Métis from northern Saskatchewan, Night Raiders is a film about harm, abuse, violence, and/or intergenerational trauma due to colonial practices. It is one of the most important Canadian films made in recent times. A searing thriller set in the near future; it digs deep into Canada's painful past to craft a compelling, propulsive piece of genre cinema. After a destructive war across North America, a military occupation seizes control of society. One of their core tactics: taking children from their families and putting them into State Academies or forced-education camps. Niska (played by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) is a Cree mother desperate to protect her daughter Waseese (played by Brooklyn Letexier-Hart). But events force mother and daughter to separate, leading Niska to join a group of Cree vigilantes to get her daughter back. This story echoes the real forced assimilation of Indigenous children that colonizing powers undertook in Canada, the US, Australia, and beyond. It transforms the ugly reality of residential schools into remarkable, cinematic piece. Goulet's vision, combined with powerful performances from Tailfeathers, Letexier-Hart, and Gail Maurice, bring this speculative future into dialogue with our past. Night Raiders is not just a singular Canadian film, but a new view of Canada for the entire world. In good company after last week's episode with Marlene director Wendy Hill-Tout, and just in time for both Canadian Film Day on April 20 and this year's edition of the Hot Docs documentary film festival starting on April 28, this week, we're talking to a documentary filmmaker. You know about the COVID-19 pandemic, but another pandemic has been affected people a lot longer. This is one of those stories. This week's episode of the podcast features actor and filmmaker Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers. Her recent documentary, Kímmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy, is a homecoming of sorts as she visits the Kainai First Nation in Alberta, her people, who have been hit hard by the overdose crisis. It's also a personal story because one of the first responders in Kainai is Tailfeathers' own mother. Kímmapiiyipitssini, which is a Blackfoot word meaning "giving kindness to others", is a story about our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation and the generational trauma of our First Nations people. It's also a story familiar to every community in Canada regardless of location or ethnicity. It's an exhaustive case study of the systemic, cultural and governmental barriers thrown up to fight drug addition and how community leaders have had to be savvy and think outside the box in order to make an impact. This interview with Tailfeathers, which is a longer version of one that was played last fall on End Credits, covers the making of Kímmapiiyipitssini, how the director had to separate personal and professional commitments, and working with her mom as her film's main character. She also discusses the difficulties in rephrasing addiction as a health crisis, whether her film represents an inflection point with the crisis, and the recent mass cultural embrace of Indigenous stories, both real and imagined. So let's talk about the meaning of empathy on this week's Guelph Politicast! Kímmapiiyipitssini: The Meaning of Empathy is now streaming on the subscription version of the National Film Board's site, but if you're a student or teacher in either of the two local school boards in the region you already have free access. You can also see Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers work as an actor in Blood Quantum and Night Raiders, and you can stream both those movies on Crave. The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. First up though is SLUMBER PARTY MASSACRE a remake of the 1982 classic slasher. This one is directed by Danishka Esterhazy whose film The Banana Splits movie went down well around here!  Next is RED SNOW , a horror comedy in which a young novelist is "visited" by an injured vampire. NIGHT RAIDERS is a political allegory dressed up as a Dystopian sci-fi movie and gave us unsettling flash-backs of The Flood! Our final feature review is STEALING CHAPLIN, a caper movie directed by Paul Tanter (Kill Ratio, Once Upon A Time at Christmas), and starring Simon Philips alongside his brother Doug as a pair of conmen in Las Vegas. Our Short Shot is BOGLINS RETURN - This is from the MASE BROTHERS who gave us the excellent Cyborg: Deadly Machine. We recommend you click the link to check out their other work! As mentioned above, Sean Malloy joins us to talk about our DTV Throwback, the remake of GET CARTER starring Sylvester Stallone. Please note that I mistakenly call Stallone's character "John" when in fact it's Jack! You can find Get Carter on IMDB TV, and is free with adverts. On her first day on set, Danis Goulet knew she wanted to be a filmmaker. As she transitioned from casting to head a film festival in Toronto, she saw a potential path to making her own shorts, like Spin, Divided by Zero, Wapawekka, and Barefoot. Her first full feature as the writer-director, Night Raiders, the story focuses on a mother who joins an underground band of vigilantes to try to rescue her daughter from a state-run institution. In this interview, Danis talks about approaching films as experiments, failures and successes making shorts, how she used history to write a futuristic film, and her thoughts on being an indigenous storyteller. “Power has never given up without a fight. Indigenous people are in a unique position to offer a warning.” Danis Goulet is the writer and director of NIGHT RAIDERS - a near future dystopian fiction that is in theaters and on-demand now. Night Raiders tells the tale of an indigenous (Cree) mother and daughter - played by Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers + Brooklyn Letexier-Hart - making their way through the aftermath of a modern day civil war - where all children are being taken by the state. The film is allegory for 20th century residential school systems - North American government programs that pulled away 150,000 Indigenous children from their parents - dispersing them amongst Christian boarding schools and cutting all ties with their heritage. We're talking about moder day colonization of culture - which has recently given rise to the “Idol No More” movement. Night Raiders was executive produced by Taika Watiti (another prominent indiginous filmmaker) - and as Danis' first feature film is a powerful story. Danis is Cree/Metis - and was born in La Ronge, Saskatchewan and now resides in Toronto. Her films have screened at festivals around the world including Sundance, the Toronto International Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, - as well as the imagineNATIVE festival - where she is actively involved. After this conversation about fitting in and speaking out - and the dangers of what modern day white supremacy means for our future - you'll want to go see her film yesterday. If raising kids is priceless, why does it cost so much? That's the question we're diving into today for the 5th in an 8 part Masterclass with Meridian Credit Union. Nancie Taylor, Senior Wealth Advisor at Meridian Credit Union joins me to discuss the price tag that comes with kids, and how with a little planning you can avoid some major pitfalls. It's all part of our big plan to get you financially fit in 2021. In a world seemingly divided on just about everything, there is one ability that can inspire and connect, and is repeatedly being hailed as a superpower. That skill is empathy and my next guest, Erin Thorp, is on a mission to help all leaders learn this powerful skill and implement it in their leadership. She joins me to share how mastering empathy can get you further ahead at work and in life. This is the time of year that Anne Brodie works around the clock with TIFF in full swing. This week she joins me to share the best of the capsule reviews she's seen so far including Night Raiders, a disturbing story in its own right paralleling the traumas of the residential school system for generations of First Nations. Plus some new movies and shows you won't want to miss in theatres and at home. The negative thoughts we have about our body are not our fault. They are learned from the culture we live in where we've been conditioned to believe that our worth is in our appearance, SPOILER (it's not!). Summer Innanen, a professionally trained coach specializing in body image, self-worth and confidence joins me to share ways to break free of the noise. When the pandemic first hit, women across the country were forced into their homes and into their kitchens. After cooking roughly 1 MILLION Meals or at least it feels that way, we want a break. Thankfully Jannine Rane, co-founder of Zing, a Toronto based company that makes chef- prepared pantry shortcuts to help home cooks bring a meal from your fridge to your table in 15 minutes or less joins me to share the inspiration behind the company making cooking easier for at home chefs. Finally, Play is an essential part of child development, exploration and how we learn about the world and how it works. Sadly, it is often dismissed. Frances Fishman is the founder of The Play Base, a behavioural services provider that helps kids grow through what they need most: play.
