#278: Chris Parker - Creating Together

Chris Parker is an award winning comedian, actor, writer, show-runner and podcaster.  This past year Chris hosted the New Zealand Comedy Festival Gala, and toured his latest show, Give Me One Good Reason Why I Shouldn't Throw My Phone Off This Bridge, to full houses throughout Australia and New Zealand. He also made his prime-time Australian TV debut on Thank God You're Here (where he won the episode) and released the highly anticipated second season of Double Parked. Chris Parker is most commonly known for his funny Instagram and TikTok videos which built him a huge social media audience over the last few years. His legendary win on the hit New Zealand TV show Celebrity Treasure Island made history! His 2018 New Zealand International Comedy Festival show Camp Binch, was awarded the prestigious Fred Award for Best Show in the Festival and went on to play to 5-star reviews and sell-out crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Fun fact, the felt hat he made during the 2020 nationwide lockdown was acquired by and is on display at The Auckland Museum and Te Papa the National Museum of New Zealand. Kinda dramatic – don't you agree? Chris is a theatre graduate from the renowned drama school Toi Whakaari O Aotearoa and he has appeared in and written multiple theatre shows across New Zealand, most notably Hudson and Halls Live! Where Chris played one-half of the famous gay cooking duo, David Halls and won best actor at the 2017 Wellington Theatre Awards. Chris has appeared in feature films such as Baby Done, The Breaker Upperers and Nude Tuesday and has two feature films of his own currently in development. As a comedian and writer Chris is a regular face on New Zealand television appearing on 7 Days, Have You Been Paying Attention NZ, Jono and Ben, Funny Girls, Season 3 of Taskmaster New Zealand and the sitcom Golden Boy. Chris also co-hosts the podcast The Male Gays with fellow comedian Eli Matthewson, which has an upcoming digital video series in production. Chris was listed as The Herald's top 5 Entertainment Heroes of 2020 and in 2021, was nominated for Television Personality of the Year. In 2022, Chris was the recipient of the inaugural Topp Prize awarded by the New Zealand Comedy Trust for Aotearoa's most generous and gifted comedian. That same year released the comedy/documentary special Chris Parker: Back To School, about all boy schools in Christchurch. Chris embarked on an Australian and New Zealand national tour of his show Gentle Man to sold-out crowds and 5-star reviews and his debut novel Here for a Good Time was released through Allen & Unwin. In 2023, Chris toured his new show, Lots of Love, Chris Parker, to sold-out audiences in Australia and New Zealand. Chris's new comedy series, Double Parked, premiered in June and was created and written with Alice Snedden. He was the show runner and writer for the narrative comedy series Double Parked and is currently touring his live stand up (Stop Being So Dramatic) shows across New Zealand and Australia. Stop Being So Dramatic are four words the self-proclaimed People's Princess of Aotearoa Chris Parker has heard his whole life. Now those words also happen to be the name of his show touring Australia and New Zealand in 2025. At the culturally relevant age of 34, Chris is ready to address the drama queen allegations head-on. Stop Being So Dramatic promises to be an hour of high-intensity, feverishly paced and dizzyingly expressive comedy, it's a one-man variety spectacle, chill, stand-up hour of laughs. That doesn't sound dramatic at all – does it? Chris admits, there is some merit to the accusations, such as crying in every speech he's ever delivered publicly, and there may have been a situation this year where he slept on his neck weirdly resulting in a neck brace. Still, Chris is sure he's just a chilled guy, down to Earth and he's ready to prove it to you in Stop Being So Dramatic.   We chat about his evolving voice, performing on a broken foot (multiple times), being an improv king and his 10 hour improv day, being the felting guy, his upcoming tour, being a show runner and leadership, thriving on celebrity treasure island plus plenty more! It’s Episode 121 Anna Smith (Girls on Film, Metro, Time Out) and Scarlett (Sunday Times Style and Secrets of the Side Hustle) join Flixwatcher to review Anna’s choice The Breaker Upperers. The Breaker Upperers is a 2018 New Zealand comedy from Jackie van Beek and Madeleine Sami who wrote, direct and star the film. It also features the boy from Boy (Jordan Rolleston) and a cameo from Jermaine Clement. The Breaker Upperers is an agency run by Mel and Jen who provide an easy way out for people who can’t end their own relationships, in an increasingly bizarre situation including faking disappearances and fake pregnancy. The film benefits mainly from its two main characters willingness to go all the way, it’s closest comparisons would be Bridesmaids or the Wedding Crashers even, but without the need to go the gross-out gags. While on the outside it might be about people too lazy to break up their failed relationships it’s actually more about friendship and learning to grow with each other.   Scores [supsystic-tables id=126] There are really, really funny moments (dream sequence Celine Dion karaoke) and then some uneven less funny moments (striptease for a lesbian police officer that runs a bit too long) and it sometimes feels a bit like a sketch show rather than a feature film. That said if you’re a fan of this slightly quirky Kiwi humor you’ll find a lot to enjoy. Best enjoyed with a group of friends, The Breaker Upperers scores a very respectable 4.13 overall. Cinema experiences, the world over. Sarah Watt, William Chen and Jeremy Downing discuss the various films and cinema experiences from their trips around the world. Sarah opens the discussion by outlining her trip around Europe. She mentions La Dolce Vita, Drive and Avengers: Endgame. She talked about multiple masterclasses, including with steadicam inventor Garrett Brown, one with Rutger Hauer, another with Joe Dante and later with Francis Ford Coppola. William then shared about his trip to the United States, highlighting Los Angeles and its focus on cinema. He watched Toy Story, Story 2 and Toy Story 3 on the plane, which guides the discussion for a while. We chat about Thor: Ragnarok, Eagle vs Shark, The Breaker Upperers, No. 2 and Whale Rider. William then chats about Hobbs & Shaw, as well as the Fast & Furious connections. We talk about the jarring feeling of hearing the New Zealand accent in big budget films, like Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones, Aquaman and in Hobbs & Shaw. This moves into a discussion around Pacific Island culture representation, including the final act of Hobbs & Shaw and Moana. This moves into a conversation about Vai, including the progression of Pasifika cinema. We highlight The Orator, One Thousand Ropes, Three Wise Cousins, Hibiscus & Ruthless, and Take Home Pay. We unpack the filmmaking of Vai, comparing it to Waru. William then brings up the brilliance of Idris Elba in Hobbs & Shaw, including the rap that he wrote for the film. William raps. It is quite glorious. We wrap up the episode with Sarah sharing her experience at Festival de Cannes 2019. She mentions multiple films and her involvement in press conferences and interviews. This includes lining up for two hours to see Once Upon A Time... In Hollywood, Sarah's husband Doug getting the opportunity to interview Joon Ho Bong, director of Palme d'Or winning Parasite, watching the films Les Misérables and Bacurau, as well as seeing conversation with Sylvester Stallone. Sarah had the opportunity to see Apocalypse Now: Final Cut, as well as taking part in a masterclass with Francis Ford Coppola. She also watched The Piano and The Devil Thumbs a Ride, finishing her trip with a visit to a Stanley Kubrick exhibition.

What made Rob change his mind so drastically about Dirty John? Why does Dating Around lead Rob to conclude that Robbie is a cold sociopath who is unable to experience empathy? These and other questions will be answered in the March 2019 episode of New On Netflix UK (which is an entirely unofficial podcast - did I mention that already?) This month's reviews: 1) Breaker Upperers, a broad New Zealand comedy about a service to help people end their relationships. See the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKAjnXG3m4A 2) Dirty John, a TV dramatisation of a true crime podcast. See the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fG70KroYlik 3) Dating Around, a slick New York based dating show where one person meets five others and doesn't get changed in between, for some reason. See the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVmDZVcpeRs 4) The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind, a true story of a Malawi boy facing famine. Rob decides this is a good opportunity to deliver a lecture on sustainable development. It's a bit like when a stand up comedian tries to shoehorn in a bit from their routine to a normal conversation, except it's much less entertaining. See the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPkr9HmglG0&t=44s Another 'highlight' from this episode is Robbie's first attempt at a jingle (with apologies to Adam Buxton). The music at the start and end is by Jahzzar

This New Zealand comedy from Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Been does exactly what it says on the tin: 90 solid minutes of deliciously inappropriate humour about two women who run a business breaking up with people’s partners when they are too cowardly/useless to do so in person. Featuring some of your favourite NZ comedy talent and some behind the scenes help from Taika Waititi, using his power for good, this continues 2018’s run of comedies.

I'm back with a review of the latest hilarious comedy to come out of New Zealand, this time from writers/directors/stars Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek. Ratings System: Longneck of Melbourne Bitter - an excellent film. Sublimely entertaining, meaningful or both.  Pint of Kilkenny - a very good, highly recommended film.  Stubby of Reschs - a good film and worth your time.  Schooner of Carlton Draught - Not great aye. But perhaps an interesting idea or two.  Schooner of Tooheys New - Shithouse

Charlie, Jess, Daniel and Chris discuss the week's films, check out the surprises at this year's BAFTA awards, revisit Oscars history to look at the most shunned movies we love, and ask if our pure imagination is ready for a third incarnation of 'Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory'.Reviews▸ Game Night▸ Finding Your Feet▸ A Fantastic Woman▸ Winchester▸ 2:22▸ The BBQTrailers▸ Incredibles 2▸ The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society▸ The Breaker UpperersNews▸ Earlier this week, the BAFTA awards brought us to the final step before the Oscars, and the winners were quite predictable - in fact, in a lot of cases, they mirrored what happened with the Golden Globes. We look at the winners and ask whether the Oscars follow suit, or surprise everyone?▸ A recent Indiewire article delved into the greatest films of the 21st century that somehow missed out on a single Oscar nomination in their respective years. Now, with the 90th Academy Awards getting closer and closer, we thought it’d be a fine time to talk about our favourite films and their most infuriating misses.▸ In 1971, audiences were invited to “view paradise” with ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’ - the first big screen adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic. It was a box office flop, but found its place in our hearts, home movie collections and pure imaginations in the decades that followed. Then in 2005, Tim Burton (and Johnny Depp in an Anna Wintour wig) gave kids a chance to score a golden ticket once again. It was the remake no one wanted or asked for - it made millions, but not the cultural impact of its predecessor. Now it’s 2018, and a third adaptation is in the works, this time helmed by ‘Paddington 2’ director Paul King. It's been 13 years since we’ve visited the Oompa Loompas - is it time to explore the chocolate factory again?Stay Up-To-Datefacebook.com/maketheswitchAUtwitter.com/maketheswitchAUinstagram.com/maketheswitchAUmaketheswitchAU.tumblr.comThe hoststwitter.com/Charlie_Davidtwitter.com/MissJess_SWITCHtwitter.com/DanielLammintwitter.com/ChrisCEdwardsNext week's episode▸ Reviews of 'Red Sparrow', 'The Square' and 'Film Stars Don't Die In Liverpool'For more episodeswww.SWITCHCast.com.au
