Hosted by Curator and Impact Producer Nadia Denton, it delves deep into the rapidly evolving film industry. Featuring the insights from film creatives and professionals from Sápmi, Canada and Yakutia, this episode will shine a light on the ground-breaking work of the Witness Program, a film training and mentorship programme for emerging Indigenous filmmakers from the Circumpolar Arctic that is the fruit of a collaboration between Telefilm Canada and the Arctic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF). Designed as a professional development opportunity that allows Arctic Indigenous filmmakers to share their authentic perspectives on how climate change is affecting their communities through their own storytelling and in their own filmic and spoken languages, the programme supported a first cohort of 6 filmmakers who produced 5 films and were mentored by 3 Indigenous long-feature film producers and filmmakers, under the guidance of Liisa Holmberg, CEO of the AIFF. These conversations unpack the way in which these first-hand narratives convey the sense of urgency of climate change which Arctic Indigenous communities have been witnessing for decades and the ways in which their filmmaking practices can embody acts of resistance, resilience and language revitalisation. Key to understanding these films is the notion of a worldview. The speakers, Liisa Holmberg, filmmakers Sadetło Scott and Svetlana Romanova and mentor Danis Goulet, all share their experiences of how their communities' worldview, connection and deep relationship to the land are expressed in these and other films, which they made in a context of challenges to the land and Indigenous storytelling through the compounded effects of climate change and colonization. Film commissioner Liisa Holmberg (she/her) is working in International Sámi Film Institute (ISFI) in Norway. Liisa Holmberg is a Sámi film maker originally from Finnish side of the Saamiland. She has worked in the film business as a producer, production manager and film consultant from the year 1994. Big part of her work as a film commissioner is working internationally with Indigenous film makers in Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Sápmi and Russia to establish an Arctic Indigenous Film Fund (AIFF). Holmberg is a member of European Film Academy from the year 2018. Sadetło Scott (she/her) is a Tłı̨chǫ Dene filmmaker, who grew up and lives in Sǫǫ̀mbak'è, Denendeh (Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada). Sadetło has a B.A. in Indigenous Governance and a Certificate in Heritage and Culture from Yukon University, and Certificates in Motion Picture Production and Cinematography from Capilano University. Sadetło's work, such as “Edaxàdets'eetè” aims to educate on the importance of Indigenous language and the Indigenous experience. Svetlana Romanova (Sakha/Even) is an artist and filmmaker born in Yakutsk, the capital city of the Sakha Republic, Russia, located south of the Arctic Circle. Her practice centers on the importance of Indigenous visual language, particularly in the Arctic regions and gravitates towards critical self historization. Writer/director Danis Goulet's films have screened at festivals around the world including Berlinale, Sundance, MoMA and the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Her award-winning feature NIGHT RAIDERS premiered in the Panorama section at Berlinale and also screened at TIFF in 2021. For television, Danis has recently directed for the acclaimed FX series RESERVATION DOGS. She is Cree/Metis, originally from northern Saskatchewan. The host Nadia Denton is a film industry specialist with over a decade of experience as a Curator, Impact Producer and Author. Her focus has been on cinema of the African diaspora, she specialises in Nigerian Cinema and is author of two books The Black British Filmmakers Guide to Success and The Nigerian Filmmaker's Guide to Success: Beyond Nollywood. Three news stories summarized & contextualized by analytic journalist Colin Wright. The World Food Program will end its main assistance program in Syria in January, affecting millionsSummary: The United Nations' World Food Program has announced that it will halt its main efforts in Syria beginning in January, due to financial constraints.Context: The agency previously cut food assistance to the approximately 5.5 million Syrian civilians it was supporting back in July, and then in August it cut the financial aid it was providing to Syrian refugees in Jordon, both cuts the result of insufficient funding; in a recent statement, the World Food Program said that these cuts are arriving at a moment in which food security in the region is “worse than ever before”—about 90% of Syrians live in poverty—and that it will continue to maintain its smaller, less expensive programs, like providing school meals and rehabbing irrigation systems in Syria, but that ever-shrinking agency budgets and donor fatigue have made those efforts precarious, as well.—The Associated PressOne Sentence News is a reader-supported publication. In Earth, Ice, Bone, Blood, Charlotte Wrigley considers how permafrost—and its disappearance—redefines extinction to be a lack of continuity that affects both life and nonlife on earth. With a look at the coldest regions in the world, Wrigley examines the wild new economies and mitigation strategies responding to thawing permafrost, including such projects as Pleistocene Park, Colossal, and Sooam Biotech, and offers a new angle on extinction through the concept of discontinuity. A team of Russian scientists recently examined something extremely unusual: the frozen body of a brown bear that lived thousands of years ago. The cold preserved the body almost perfectly in the frozen lands of eastern Siberia for almost 3,500 years. Maxim Cheprasov is the laboratory chief at the Lazarev Mammoth Museum Laboratory at the North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk, eastern Siberia. "This find is absolutely unique: the complete body of an ancient brown bear," he said. In 2020, reindeer herders found the female bear on an island in the Arctic Ocean. Part of the animal was sticking out of the frozen ground, or permafrost, on Bolshoy Lyakhovsky Island. The island is around 4,600 kilometers east of Moscow. Because it was found just east of the Bolshoy Etherican River, it has been named the Etherican brown bear.Low temperatures helped preserve the bear's soft tissue for 3,460 years. It also let the scientists know about its final meals - bird feathers and plants. The bear is 1.55 meters tall and weighs nearly 78 kilograms. "For the first time, a carcass with soft tissues has fallen into the hands of scientists, giving us the opportunity to study the internal organs and examine the brain," said Cheprasov. The scientific team in Siberia looked at the bear's brain, skin and internal organs so they could study its cells, genes, viruses and other organisms that lived inside it. Genetic analysis has shown that the bear does not differ in mitochondrial DNA from the modern bear from the north-east of Russia – Yakutia and Chukotka," Cheprasov said. He said the bear was about three to four years old when it died from an injury to its back. It is unclear how the bear came to be on the island, which is now divided from the mainland by a 50-kilometer-wide body of water. It may have crossed over ice, it might have swum over, or the island might still have been part of the mainland. The Lyakhovsky Islands contain some of the richest treasures in the world for the field of paleontology. The area attracts both scientists and ivory traders hunting for the remains of woolly mammoths, a kind of hairy elephant that disappeared long ago.“基因分析表明,这只熊的线粒体 DNA 与来自俄罗斯东北部的现代熊——雅库特和楚科奇熊没有区别,”Cheprasov 说。
The permafrost is a thriving ecosystem, teaming with life, mythology, histories and futures, hidden just below the surface. Yet unlike tropical rainforests or the deep oceans, this frozen expanse rarely appears in the cultural imagination. Curator Sophie J Williamson ventures on a journey to discover the life of the permafrost. In -40° winter of the Canadian Yukon Valley, ancient forests, perfectly preserved by the permafrost, are uncovered by miners and 10,000-year-old grass seeds sprout into life. In the blustery remote Artic town of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard (the world's northernmost settlement) cryomicrobiologists drill boreholes hundreds of meters deep to explore the deepest and oldest of earthly ecologies, bringing to the surface living microbes that are hundreds of thousands of years old. And in unceded Sápmi lands of northern Finland, permafrost mounds decompose into marshy peatlands, while biologists trace the shifting bio- and geoacoustics of a changing ecology. From the piercing-white tundra and the hundreds of thousands of lakes across the vast expanse of Siberia, indigenous folklore emerges from the unknowns of the icy underlands. And scientists in Yakutsk (the world's coldest city), travel the icy landscapes to discover the stories secreted within the still fleshy, visceral carcasses of mammoths and ancient creatures that are exposed as the millennia-year-old ice thaws. With contributions by Hannu Autto, Jonathan Carruthers-Jones, Tori Herridge, Karen Lloyd, Sanna Piilo, Svetlana Romanova, Nikita Tananaev, Peter von Tiesenhausen, and other members of Sámi, Sakha and Yukagir communities of unceded Sápmi territory and Northern Siberia who prefer not to be named. On May 9, when Russia celebrates the USSR's victory against Nazi Germany, several regions across the country announced that they were renaming local streets in honor of soldiers and political figures from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DNR). For example, the cities of Grozny, Yakutsk, and Omsk dedicated streets to Alexander Zakharchenko, the DNR's leader until his assassination in August 2018. Other cities announced streets named after Vladimir Zhoga, also known by his nom de guerre "Vokha," who commanded the Sparta Battalion, a pro-Russian separatist force in Donetsk, until his death in March 2022 in combat with the Ukrainian military. Also on May 9, Zhoga's father met personally with Russia's president. Meduza has learned that these dedications and Vladimir Putin's sit-down with Artem Zhoga are parts of a strategy developed by the Kremlin to "prime public opinion" for Russia's annexation of the separatist "republics" in Donetsk and Luhansk. By Davy Crockett In 1873, Jules Verne published his classic adventure novel, Around the World in 80 Days, which captivated imaginations of the possibility of traveling around the world in a given time and the wonders that could be seen. Also at that time, Pedestrianism, competitive walking, was in its heyday. Starting in 1875 individuals began to discuss if it would be possible to somehow walk around the world. Wagers were made and attempts began. They had no true idea how far it was or how long it would take. It wouldn’t be until more than 100 years later that some guidelines would be established for those who truly wished to walk around the world. Yes, such an activity was real and still is today. How far is it to walk around the world? Today the World Runners Association has set a standard that it must be at least 16,308 miles. Early pedestrians were estimating that it would be between 14,000-18,000 miles. Today the fastest known recognized time is 434 days returning to the point of origin. It all started in earnest around 1875. During that year, circumnavigation ultrawalkers emerged along along with frauds who fooled the public to win wagers and made a living off giving lectures about their "walk." Most American transcontinental walks of the 1800s involved fraud and fabrication. Some examples are covered in: "Dakota Bob - Transcontinental Walker." The same was true for most early attempts to circle the globe on foot, but their tales are still fascinating. This multi-part article will share the stories and make some corrections on false claims that have been published in many books. Corporal Lediard - 1786 The earliest known attempt was made more than 230 years ago. During the winter of 1786-87 an English marine corporal named Lediard, an American by birth, started from London with the plan of walking around the globe, or going as far as possible. He planned to cross Europe and Asia, and then be ferried across the Bering Straight to North America, continue to New York and return to England. A sum of $250 was raised for him and he started out. He walked to Hamburg Germany, to St. Petersburg, Russia, and continued into Siberia as far as the city of Yakutsk where he stopped for the winter of 1787-88. But in January 1788, he was arrested by the order of the Empress of Russia. "In half an hour's time, he was carried away under the guard of two soldiers and an officer, in a post sledge (sled) for Moscow, without his clothes, money, and papers and then taken back to St. Petersburg." He was expelled from Russian, sent to Poland with orders not to return to Russia, and thus his walk around the world was foiled. "During all this time, he suffered the greatest hardships, from sickness, fatigue and want of rest, so that he was almost reduced to a skeleton. He said it had been a miserable journey but was very disappointed to not achieve his daring enterprise." Christian Frederick Schaefer - 1866 Christian Frederick Schaefer was a German who spent much of his entire life traveling. In 1866, about the age of 30, he said that he had been traveling the world for the previous 15 years. He reached Kansas and it was reported, "He has visited nearly all countries in Europe, Asia and Africa and is now en route to the Pacific coast. He estimates that he has traveled over 68,000 miles on foot. He has passports in fifteen different languages and his autograph book contains recommendations and signatures of a large number of the most distinguished men in this country and in Europe. He is a small man and has been suffering since his birth with a deformity of the spine. But he has unbounded energy and perseverance, is thoroughly impressed with the idea of making a tour around the world, and will succeed." His autographs included Andrew Johnson, Ulysses M. Grant, and Brigham Young. After crossing America he claimed to go across China and to Singapore. It 1867 he made it to Australia. In 1882,
According to Peter Wilson in Cleveland, Russian miners unearthed a gemological oddity—a type of rare diamond called a Matryoshka diamond. It is thought to be the world's first diamond within a diamond and the first of its kind. Named for the famed Russian nesting doll toys, the Matryoshka diamond is a tiny, tabular-shaped diamond encased within a larger diamond. Incredibly, there is enough space within the larger diamond, that the smaller specimen rattles inside, the report said. The outer gem is roughly .62 carats, but the inner gem is much smaller, weighing only about .02 carats. It was pulled from the depths of the Nyurba mine in Yakutia, Russia. The diamond was discovered only later as it was being assessed in Yakutsk—often referred to as Russia’s diamond capital—by specialists at the Yakutsk Diamond Trade Enterprise. It was then given to the Research and Development Geological Enterprise of ALROSA, who used raman and infrared spectroscopic imagery and x-ray microtomography to get a closer look at the gem. The most interesting thing for us was to find out how the air space between the inner and outer diamonds was formed,” Oleg Kovalchuk, Deputy Director for innovations at ALROSA's Research and Development Geological Enterprise said in a statement. According to the Peter Wilson in Cleveland, scientists believe the diamond to be around 800 million years old and suspect that either the smaller diamond formed first and was surrounded by the larger diamond or a layer of crystal within the larger diamond dissolved to reveal a cavity. Diamonds form deep below Earth’s surface in the upper mantle at depths of around to 100 miles. Some rare types of diamond, like the Hope diamond, are formed even farther below the surface, as deep as 1,800 miles. The combination of high pressure and temperature creates the perfect conditions for the crystals to grow. All of Earth’s diamonds are formed under these high pressure and temperature conditions and are thought to be brought up to the surface during an explosive type of deep-rooted volcanic eruption.

Karolis Mieliauskas, an adventure motorcycle rider from Lithuania, covered a distance of 1000 km riding from Yakutsk to Oymyakon, which is considered the coldest inhabited place on earth. He completed the trip in just four days on his Yamaha XT660Z Tenere in a land where temperatures reach below -50C in winter. Riding on a section of the Road of Bones, a road through the Russian Far East that serves as a memorial to the people who built it, it was an epic adventure of the coldest kind. An event that carries risk can generate harm or a loss. A certain level of risk has to be accepted by, for example, a bank, in order to generate profit. Risk is calculated by assessing the probability that a borrower will default on its repayments.Did you ever take a calculated risk? Whether you were at the top of a ski slope or invading Yakutsk in a game of “Risk,” you probably have done so. But can you really calculate risk? This episode is about how banks and other financial players tot up their risks—and guard against potential losses. In fact we'll learn that there are a lot of different kinds of risk. They have very specific names, like credit risk and liquidity risk. But don't worry. The European Investment Bank's experts will define them all for you. The podcast will also tell you what a black swan is…To talk about risk, we turned to two senior EIB managers. Luigi Armeli is in the Transactions Management and Restructuring directorate, while Giancarlo Sardelli works in the Risk Management directorate. Here are a few of the subjects these clever fellows touched upon in the podcast:The risk appetite of a bank, says Luigi, represents the boundaries of the risk the bank is willing to take as part of its ongoing business.Exposure is the credit that a bank has lent to a given counterparty, as it appears on the bank's balance sheet. This does not coincide exactly with what the bank risks losing in the case of a default. Normally a bank wouldn't expect to lose the full exposure in the event of a default, Luigi explains. How complicated is the maths involved in all this? To estimate risk involves mathematical modelling, though calculated risks aren't only about maths. Giancarlo tells us common sense is just as important to a risk manager, as well as knowledge of law, accounting and other fields.A black swan is a risk that is highly unlikely or almost impossible—until it happens. Where does the phrase come from? For centuries swans were thought only to be white. Black swans were considered an impossibility—until they were discovered in Australia. When a black swan event happens, it has disastrous financial consequences.Liquidity risk is the capacity at any time to ensure the funding of the portfolio of assets on your balance sheet.Credit risk represents the likelihood of getting back money a bank has lent. In this episode, I talk about my final leg of my 3 month trip after being deported from Germany. After finishing my meeting with my mom in Mongolia I went back to finish off the rest of Russia. Through Chita where I was on a TV news program, to the frozen swampland of Yakutsk, to the Alaskan-sister region of Kamchatka, and finally to Vladivostok. I also talk about my epic 164 hour (7 day) Trans-Siberian train ride all the way across Russia. It has been a good trip and although it might be too long for others to manage, I highly recommend it.
Translippers is a psy-dub project of Arthur Mustafin, a composer and music performer from Saint-Petersburg, Russia. In 1984 he gained experience in jazz and rock`n`roll bands as a bass player, but in 2011 this changed with his trip to India, where he seriously got into ethnical instruments. This led to Arthur incorporating these instruments into his own production, which significantly transformed his sound. The perfectly mixed dub rhythm will relax your body, and the atmospheric electronica will inspire you. Prepare yourself to discover an entrancing blend of cultures through distinct flavors of Scandinavian and African drums, ethno-jazz vocals, chants of Miao from China and Chukchi from Yakutsk, Eastern and Latin American percussions, Indian sitar and Arabic oud, guitar, and harmonica.
