The Netherlands has a unique relationship with water. One-third of the country lies below sea level, and almost 20% of the mainland is water – largely due to the 6,000 kilometers of waterways that support industry and recreation.Pumping and diverting and blocking water is what made the Netherlands possible, turning it into a vital European trading hub and top agricultural exporter. But now, the masters of controlling water are facing a new challenge: worsening drought. That's why Google partnered with North Water, a Dutch water treatment company, to harness water from a network of canals to cool its data center. The €‎45-million project featured construction of a pipeline that can carry 10 million cubic meters of water each year to the data center. It also required a new treatment plant to treat and filter the water. The project illustrates the creative, sustainable methods for cooling data centers that Google is deploying around the world.Learn more about Google's partnership with North Water and Google's water sustainability commitments. These are the folks that made The King's Speech, Lion, Widows, Macbeth, Ammonite, Slow West, Top of the Lake, State of the Union and more recently Jane Campion's ferocious gothic Western The Power of the Dog and Andrew Haigh's riveting TV series The North Water.  Sam started her career in documentary television before joining See-Saw in 2011 where she worked her way up from assistant.  We spoke about many things to do with marketing such as poster design, creating trailers, what good publicity actually looks like and how involved directors are, as well as several more broad topics such as mental health on film sets, how you can better value and advocate for yourself, and that time Sam produced a Steve McQueen-directed music video for Kanye West… This is episode 95 of Best Girl Grip.   Show notes Watch Sam's film recommendation Little Woods or Crossing The Line by Nia DaCosta on Amazon Prime.

Topics include the show's sharp depiction of masculinity and sexuality in Victorian England, its uncompromising approach to violence, stellar performances from O'Connell and Farrell, and more.

If baptism means dying to sin, what does sin mean for progressives? And how is our treatment of people we deem sinful any different from the judgemental Christians we don't want to be? Jonty meditates on this as well as the TV dramas The North Water and Midnight Mass. Plans for a massive water take to grow more avocados in the Far North could get the green light in the coming weeks, but there are major concerns among some locals about what that will mean for the environment. An application to take billions of litres from Te Aupouri aquifer, which sits right at the top of the country, is currently being considered by independent commissioners. A decision is expected in August. While there has been opposition from the Department of Conservation and many in the community, those wanting the water say the environment is their primary concern too.

Welcome to the final episode of Season 1 of the Female Founder Friday podcast! It has been an amazing season, where I had the privilege and honor of speaking with 18 incredible Female Founders. They each had unique experiences, insight, and golden nuggets to share which is why I wanted to dedicate this final episode to some of my biggest takeaways from these amazing women, and share it all with you! Celebrating our small wins! I even need to remind myself to pause and celebrate the wins along the way! This is why I intentionally took the month of June to pause and really celebrate the one-year anniversary of High Voltage Leadership! Reinvention. We can pivot and reinvent ourselves and our business at any point. It is NEVER too late! Denise Summers is a perfect example! She quit her corporate job and went back to school, in a class where everyone else was the same age as her kids! How inspiring! Self-Discovery. Truly embracing what makes us unique! Tracy Guillet is a self-proclaimed introvert and shared with us how she really struggled with embracing her introversion. Now she helps others embrace their introversion to see that's what makes them special! The willingness to fail. Kelly Sinclair explains that when she started, things did not go the way she had hoped. She capitalized on this by learning and proves to us all that there are always lessons to learn. Be bold, be brave, and take risks! Bet on yourself! Robin Devine shared how important it is to bet on yourself. Dig in deep and go big. She admittedly overbuilt her practice, even when everyone told her she shouldn't. But if you build it, they will come!! Work/Life blend. Susan Kandalaft is a woman who has incredible hustle and heart but the blending of work and life has proven to be challenging and I think we can all relate! The way she unpacks this is in her episode is truly incredible. Hope. Nobody embodies hope like Lindsay Recknell. She is an expert in hope and says it is really all about having a mindset of invitation. That is also what Pauline Greenidge shared, and she emphasized just really having the confidence and knowing you can get through anything. Things will sometimes get messy, chaotic – but there is magic in some of that messiness! Resilience. Every single one of the 18 women I spoke to this season is incredibly resilient! Kim Hayden shared how she created an entire resilience series where she gets to help entrepreneurs find their resilience and build resilient businesses. She really is the definition of resilient and shares how you can weather any storm! Relationships. All 18 of these incredible female founders have created and maintained remarkable relationships. Saawan and Linda of North Water are great examples! They are business partners who have an incredible relationship built on trust, connection, honesty, and hard work. They share how this affects the culture of North Water and what makes it unique and special, and how trusting your partner and your team is so important! I have had so much fun this season, talking to these amazing female founders, and would love to hear from you! What other themes did you pick up on? What discussions would you like to have in Season 2? I also wanted to take the opportunity to say that I am launching a new coaching program called the “CEO Inner Circle” for women who are looking to level up in their leadership and build an inspiring work culture. If you want to grow and scale your business while having a culture that is authentic and true to you, I promise you will NOT want to miss this! Check out the details here! Thank you for a phenomenal season and for being a part of the Female Founder Friday Podcast! It has been so inspiring to connect with all our guests – and all of you! On today's episode, I have the privilege of sitting down and speaking with not one, but two passionate and inspiring female founders - Linda and Saawan of North Water. Proud immigrants to Canada, they found each other 12 years ago. In their travels across the world, and to the Rocky Mountains, they noticed that there was a large amount of garbage and plastic bottles wherever they went – and it inspired them to leave their established careers to take action. Their purpose is truly inspiring, and it goes to show how passionate they are to dive in, and make something happen. That doesn't mean that decision, or their path, has been an easy one! North Water started March 1st, 2020 – and 15 days later there was a province-wide lockdown as a global pandemic swept swiftly into Canada. Nobody could have foreseen the world shutting down and starting a new business during a pandemic has proven to be challenging. Linda and Saawan's practical advice is to: - Surround yourself with a high-performing team, with people you can trust that have the entrepreneurial spirit. You will always make mistakes, but your team helps you get through everything a little bit faster. They make the challenges easier to tackle. It's the people that make the magic happen. - Find a confidant you can share the journey with, a solid support network. - Remind yourself that your mental health is so important; you need to take care of yourself. - Celebrate the small wins! Be grateful, and put your energy behind the small wins, so you can get after the big ones ahead. - Believe in yourself and, more importantly, be your true authentic self. - Don't lose sight of your vision, your goal. North Water is local, glacier water from the Rockies. Our Canadian glaciers are clean and pristine, giving us the best water in the world. The bottles are made without plastic, from infinitely recyclable aluminum. Aluminum can be recycled many different times without losing its integrity and doesn't have to be recycled and made into a new bottle – it can be reused as many different things, making it an incredible sustainable option! You can find Linda and Saawan on their website, Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram – or if you want to send them a message, email them here! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/femalefounderfridays/message

Hi, it's Adalya with my second review from this years Man Booker Prize shortlist. This week I'm looking at Deborah Levy's Hot Milk. Hot Milk follows Sofia and her mother Rose as they travel from England to clinic of questionable merit in Spain, seeking answers to Rose's litany of mysterious ailments. Set in the searing heat of Southern Spain, Sofia undergoes a twisted iteration of the classic beach sexual awakening narrative while Rose undergoes Dr Gomez's treatment. As the reliability of the mother who so shapes Sofia's life and identity becomes shaky, the importance of her relationship to her father and his Greek heritage becomes a new fixation. Levy's writing is lucid and evocative. Images recur, morph and intermingle in unexpected ways. Her exploration of what it means to form an identity around illness and what it means to form an identity in inverse to somebody else is arresting and important. We are drawn immediately into Sofia's inner world, a stilted filter on reality. Even the dialogue felt unnatural, characters voices indistinguishable from Sofia's own. At times this claustrophobia was transfixing, but at times it felt like there were links we were missing. Perhaps it was the many strengths of Levy's work that left me feeling so ambivalent towards the end product. Despite its compelling subjects and beautiful prose, Hot Milk lacked any real sense of cohesiveness. Ideas and narrative were not coherently woven together and the result was just a sense of loss at what could have been. The scenes in Greece, for example, could have occurred at almost any place in the book, so separate they were from any other element. Hot Milk is by no mean's Levy's first work, so I think these failures felt greater than they would have had it been a debut. To be honest I am surprised and a little disappointed that Hot Milk made the shortlist. I haven't read the full longlist, but for me, The North Water and My Name is Lucy Barton at least were both stronger works than Hot Milk. All that said, I know there are lots of people who have loved and will love this book. I think perhaps a difficulty in reviewing book and especially books nominated for a prize is that the craft of the work is placed on equal footing to that craft's effect, whereas I think when we read a book without this consideration the effect is our primary interest. Hot Milk did not come together for me, but perhaps it would have if I had not had reviewing it in the back of my mind as I read it. With last years Booker for example, lots of writers I saw felt that, although they had been profoundly emotionally involved in Hanya Yanigihara's A Little Life, that the strings used to emotionally effect us were too present for Yanigihara to deserve the win. I think this is a reasonable and even important consideration to make, but I guess it does beg the question why or even whether it is worth paying attention to these awards at all if their priorities are so different to that of the average reader. I guess the very fact that I've undertaken this project means that I must think they are, but I think it is important to act in dialogue with the institutions you give power to. Please stick around next week as I continue to discuss the rest of the Man Booker shortlist and question the very premise of this project!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
