Learning leaders get things wrong. And you already know, for many, it is hard to be wrong. Leaders make mistakes...and it's hard. And then there's uncertainty and emotional exposure you feel as a leader...that IS hard, too. Here's the thing: you can do hard things. In this episode, you'll be reminded that you can do hard things. You'll hear how leaders who seek to get things right often find themselves in hard conversations. Then, we'll help you understand what you need to participate in the hard conversations. We won't promise you'll avoid moments of awkwardness. Instead, we simply invite you to acknowledge it. Sometimes there are conversations that are uncomfortable. But, you can be courageous and learn the skills you need for hard conversations. We walk through four reminders for learning leaders to have hard conversations. Here's the good news: it's not that hard at all. Write it Down/Talk it Out What do you need to learn to have hard conversations? What are you learning about yourself as a leader? (Especially as it relates to diversity, race, politics, and theology).
What would you say about the power of being a learning leader? In this episode, we focus on the difference between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset for Christ-centered leaders. Join us for Episode 189 to explore how each of these characteristics can show up in Christ-centered leaders and what you may need to consider to continue becoming a learning leader. Carol Dweck, a psychologist at Stanford University, studies achievement and success. What she found was that people who have a fixed mindset believe that their basic abilities, their intelligence, their talent, are fixed traits. You have a certain ability and can't grow beyond that fixed state. In other words, what you have is what you've got. Change isn't going to happen - no matter how hard you try. In a growth mindset, people understand that their talents and their abilities can be developed through effort, good teaching, and persistence. They don't necessarily think everybody's the same or that anyone can be a genius by studying more. But they do believe that everyone can get smarter or grow if they “work at it.” If there is effort put forth, they believe people will grow. We all lean toward one of these mindsets. You might guess what we'll say next. You can work to have a growth mindset. If you're thinking, I don't have a fixed mindset, pause and ask yourself if you ever try to hide your insecurities or control a conversation. Often, those can be indicators of a fixed mindset. Because of the limitations of “what you have is what you've got” people with a fixed mindset can find themselves trying to protect their intellectual status. Whereas growth mindsets can show up in simply pausing to ask questions and recognizing you don't know everything. It also shows up as focusing on transformation. A growth mindset for a Christ-centered leader means you're focused on transformation. The experiences you have with others - how are lives being changed? The worship you lead - who is being transformed into the image of God? The classes you facilitate - how are people becoming more who God created them to be? As you can guess, we're encouraging you to focus on developing a growth mindset. There's power there and there's even more power in being a learning leader. Write it Down/Talk it Out What triggers you toward a fixed mindset? What transformation is happening in your leadership? Write it down/talk it out is an ongoing feature of LeaderCast. These are two or three simple questions to prompt you in reflecting throughout the week. Use these prompts however you'd like: as a journal prompt, a conversation starter with a colleague, or a question to consider with ministry leaders in your local context. Join us next week as we continue the conversation about being a learning leader and explore the big question, “What do you do when you don't know what to do?”

In different seasons of life, rest, relaxation, and play look different. What is fun when you're a parent of small children and serving youth in the church...during a pandemic? Join Sam Heaton as he shares his experience of leading, loving, and living as a follower of Jesus in the midst of seasons filled with change. If you ever found yourself worn out from a Zoom meeting, Sam offers reminders about our basic needs. Sometimes it is as simple as seeing the possibility for fun and faithfulness. At other moments, fun involves entering the world of his young son. What may have been fun years ago takes on new meaning as a parent. At the center of our conversation is a focus on authenticity. Sam reminds us what authentic community looks like and the needs of people seeking to live life in community. He shares how life can't be separated into neat quadrants. Instead, he models what an integrated life looks and sounds like as followers of Jesus. Sometimes it's messy. Other times, it's quiet moments of solitude. And still other moments, it's being self-aware enough to know why you're scrolling on social media. Finally, if you've wondered whether Sabbath is truly possible, Sam will help you see what it looks like as a parent, partner, and leader in the church. Write it Down/Talk it Out What does Sabbath look like for you in this season? What margin do you intentionally create with technology? Where are you finding mini Sabbaths during the day? Let's chat about joy for a second. What brings you joy? When you listen to a group of Christ-centered leaders, share their wisdom on rest, relaxation, and play, it creates an atmosphere of encouragement. This week, in part 2 of “What's your best wisdom for rest, relaxation, and play?” nine different leaders explore the challenges of rest and the joy of having fun. And you might be surprised by what some of them call fun! It's a great reminder that fun and joy are individual traits. But, often, when we're doing something that doesn't necessarily bring us joy, we end up having fun because we are with people we love. As you listen to Part 2 (you can find Part 1 here), be ready to be surprised, encouraged, and challenged by leaders who are doing their best to embody a rhythm of rest, relaxation, and play in the midst of their ordinary days. As we dive into part 1 of this 2-part mini-series, we hope you'll reflect on their insights and be encouraged to know you're not alone on this leadership journey. Whether you need some encouragement to finally get a rhythm of rest, relaxation, and play in your life or you're celebrating the fun that summer brings, these leaders will offer you nuggets of wisdom. Are you ready for a different angle on rest, relaxation, and play? This week, tune in as we talk to someone whose work it is to facilitate the experiences that most of us participate in for entertainment, relaxation, and fun. Amy Burgess is a mom, the Rosie Red mascot for the Cincinnati Reds, as well as an Executive Director and Choreographer for CAST, a theater company in the greater Cincinnati area. You'll quickly learn the things other people do for rest, relaxation, and play, Amy can be found on the other side, working. Amy shares what makes those experiences meaningful for her and the people she seeks to entertain, empower, and educate. She also explores the challenges of rest, relaxation, and play. Listen for several important reminders from Amy. One of those reminders is this: being good at everything isn't the goal. Nor is it fun to do things outside of our skill sets. So, how does she accomplish things that she's not great at? Listen in to explore how Amy's self-awareness and other-awareness guide her interactions. Amy's examples come from choreography and bringing the Rosie Red mascot to life. And woven through her stories, you'll hear the heart of a Christ-centered leader. Amy is mastering the improvisational art of creating space for others to experience joy. At one moment in our conversation, Amy pauses on the idea of kinesthetic awareness. In her role as Rosie Red, Amy's capacity to express emotion without saying a single word is what creates an experience for guests. You'll hear how listening is integral to creating a space for others to experience rest, relaxation, and play. The take-aways from this episode are endless: from improv to listening to kinesthetic awareness, and much more. Write it Down/Talk it Out What does fun look like for you in this season of life? What has the last year taught you about rest, relaxation, and play? What did Amy's example of kinesthetic listening teach you about the importance of listening and expressing emotion? Try having a conversation where your response is, “Yes, and…”
Holy Moments. You’ve experienced these moments. Time stands still. You’re overcome with the presence of God. You might even question whether the moment is really happening. You’re standing on holy ground (ok, in this case, we were sitting, recording a podcast). Holy moments can’t be crafted, predicted, or rehearsed. They simply unfold. And when they do, you experience a connection to a community that you haven’t experienced before. In episode 179 we experienced one of these moments - and we hope you will too. Listen and consider what has changed about church and community in the last 30-47 years (yes, 47 years, not 45 or 50 -lol). Explore the shift from “come to church” to “get out of doors” and how one of us first experienced God beyond the church walls. Then consider how our aspirational values can confuse us and our inability to accurately assess diversity - if we are in majority, the tendency is to overestimate our diversity. So where do we begin? Begin with the desire to learn and grow. Perhaps you’ll have a conversation about a book. Here are two of April's suggestions: Building a Healthy Multi-Ethnic Church I’m Still Here by Austin Channing Brown Then, listen to the stories of people around you. If you are white, ask someone who is a person of color, with whom you have a relationship, to tell you their story. Then, LISTEN. No commentary is necessary. The only thing needed is curiosity. April offers a wonderful example of how to enter into these conversations. She also offers an abundance of grace, reminding us that we’re not always going to get it right. Holy Moments Finally, in the experience of a holy moment, we talk about everything from letting go of expectations, being right and what being fully seen can feel like. We name fear and explore how to remove any barrier that stands between a person and an encounter with God. Yes, the barriers can take the form of doubt, worry, fear, expectations, unwritten rules, perceptions, and stereotypes. How then, do Christ-centered leaders remove these barriers, let go of the filters and expectations to create space for people to encounter the holy. You see, your story intersects with God’s story. In those holy moments, we not only encounter God but we experience Christ in one another - even online. Write it Down/Talk it Out Who do you want to invite into a conversation as a result of “being aware of things in a new way?” What recent experiences of God (personal or by others) point to transformed lives and community? What is a transformation story you can share? For example, it can be simple as the transformation from self-centered to God-centered thought last Tuesday after a meeting. Think about daily life, current responsibilities, personal experiences, ongoing learning, etc. What is being transformed in your life? In ministry? In the local church? Talk it Out What is your hope for the church in the next 10 years as it relates to diversity and inclusion? What barriers exist in the community that are stopping people from encountering God? How will you find out?
This morning I would like to share a poem I recently read entitled The Shoe Man by Leanne Freiberg My alarm went offIt was Sunday again.I was sleepy and tiredMy one day to sleep in.But the guilt I would feelThe rest of the dayWould have been too muchSo I'd go and I'd pray. I showered and shavedI adjusted my tie.I got there and satIn a pew just in time.Bowing my head in prayerAs I closed my eyes.I saw the shoe of the man next to meTouching my own. I sighed. With plenty of room on either sideI thought, "Why must our soles touch?"It bothered me, his shoe touching mineBut it didn't bother him much. A prayer began: "Our Father"... I thought, "This man with the shoeshas no pride. They're dusty, worn, and scratchedEven worse, there are holes on the side!" "Thank You for blessings," the prayer went on. The shoe man saida quiet "Amen."I tried to focus on the prayerBut my thoughts were on his shoes again.Aren't we supposed to look our bestWhen walking through that door?"Well, this certainly isn't it," I thought,Glancing toward the floor. Then the prayer was endedAnd the songs of praise began. The shoe man was certainly loudSounding proud as he sang. His voice lifted the raftersHis hands were raised high. The Lord could surely hearThe shoe man's voice from the sky. It was time for the offeringAnd what I threw in was steep.I watched as the shoe man reachedInto his pockets so deep.I saw what was pulled outWhat the shoe man put in.Then I heard a soft "clink"as when silver hits tin. The sermon really bored meTo tears, and that's no lieIt wasn't the same for the shoe manFor tears fell from his eyes.At the end of the serviceAs is the custom hereWe must greet new visitorsAnd show them all good cheer. But I felt moved somehowAnd wanted to meet the shoe manSo after the closing prayerI reached over and shook his hand.He was old and his skin was darkAnd his hair was truly a messBut I thanked him for comingFor being our guest. He said, "My names' CharlieI'm glad to meet you, my friend."There were tears in his eyesBut he had a large, wide grin"Let me explain," he saidWiping tears from his eyes."I've been coming here for monthsAnd you're the first to say 'Hi.'" "I know that my appearanceIs not like all the rest"But I really do tryTo always look my best."I always clean and polish my shoesBefore my very long walk."But by the time I get hereThey're dirty and dusty, like chalk." My heart filled with painand I swallowed to hide my tearsAs he continued to apologizeFor daring to sit so near.He said, "When I get hereI know I must look a sight."But I thought if I could touch youThen maybe our souls might unite." I was silent for a momentKnowing whatever was saidWould pale in comparisonI spoke from my heart, not my head. "Oh, you've touched me," I said,"And taught me, in part;"That the best of any manIs what is found in his heart." The rest, I thought,This shoe man will never know.Like just how thankful I really amThat his dirty old shoe touched my soul. God charges us to be careful with the hearts of people to not judge people by their appearance and not measure a man based on assumptions in...Read James 2:1-9

It’s time for another mini-coaching session on How She Did That! Today’s question was submitted by Tamsin Parry. A Business Strategist, Agency Owner, and OBM, Tamsin currently services as a mentor at Business Blueprint, Australia’s #1 Business Program, and is featured as an expert on the Bizversity Business Education app. She submitted her question after trying to go the agency route and having it not go as planned, (and who can relate to that, right?!). Even though she had the tools she needed to create such an amazing agency, there are some things that you just learn on the job. Asking questions like these are crucial to being a CEO, and by asking questions and getting the information you need, you will be able to become an even better leader and CEO. Keep asking questions- that’s the only way you’ll grow! Take a look at a few of the questions that Tamsin had and see if you have the same ones! Do you ever wonder if you're the problem in a relationship when you know that the other person is forever pushing your buttons, blaming and shaming you? You may be suffering from "Reactive Abuse," and that's a cycle that you can put a stop to. You are patient. You give the benefit of the doubt. You take the blame. You apologize when you have done nothing wrong. Any of those sound familiar? Do you do them too often? Do you find yourself on the apologizing, even begging, end of abuse? Well, when you engage in Reactive Abuse, it can get totally crazy-making. It's really hard to tell which end is up once that cycle revs up. And, that's definitely NOT a good thing! My definitions of Reactive Abuse: When an emotional abuser abuses you, and you get react to their abuse by getting angry. Then they react to your anger and say that you are being abusive. ORWhen an emotional abuser pushes you to the edge, and tells you you're unstable and abusive when you fall off. Nasty! Sad. Shady. And, just wrong! It's important to see this cycle because it can be endless unless you see it and stop it. That begins by taking charge of your part in it and learning to respond rather than react to their abusive behaviors. Not easy, but do-able! Have you ever been pushed to the point where you simply lose it by an emotional or verbal abuser? That's them exercising manipulation and control, hoping that you'll respond with rage, blame, name-calling, and all the things you'd likely rather not do. This is the cycle of Reactive Abuse. As soon as you lose it, #Hijackals have you where they want you: they have the upper hand. Everything you do or say will be held against you, and a story about it concocted to make the Hijackal out to be the victim. Listen in and understand fully how Reactive Abuse works, and what you can do to stop the cycle. HIGHLIGHTS OF TODAY'S EPISODE:What is Reactive AbuseHow does reactive abuse come into playWhy you feel so badly about yourself when reactive abuse plays outWhat you may mistakenly do that doesn't help at all in the face of reactive abuse When you snap, lose it, and tell it like it is and the tables get turned on you What to do to reframe from Reactive Abuse Are you seeing the cycles of reactive abuse clearly now? What would you do if a Google doc you made went viral, and suddenly groups across the country were implementing your ideas to plan political action in their communities? If you’re Leah Greenberg, you’d found Indivisible—the national nonprofit she started with her husband Ezra Levin after the 2016 election. Now Leah and Ezra have co-authored a new book about what they learned creating Indivisible and supporting thousands of local Indivisible groups around the country, and how all of us can join the fight for more inclusive democracy. It’s called We are Indivisible, A Blueprint for Democracy After Trump, and it’s just in time to kick you into gear for the 2020 election. We started off resisting Trump, but we know that Trump's not the problem. We know that Trump is a symptom, and that if we had a healthy democratic society that valued the lives and equality of all of its people, Donald Trump would never have gotten remotely close to the White House. And so fundamentally we felt like what was crucial for us, and what was crucial for the movement, was that we were moving from resisting Trump to resisting Trumpism, and tackling the kind of fundamental flaws at the heart of democracy that were making our country vulnerable to Trumpism.—Leah Greenberg, co-founder and co-executive director of Indivisible We talk about: What made Leah and Ezra create the Indivisible guide—even though peers warned them it could ruin their careersHow to put pressure on elected officials, and why working with a community group makes political engagement more successful and more sustainable Why it’s crucial to get out of campaign mode and avoid burning staff and volunteers outWhat it’s like to run an organization and write a book with your partner Plus: It’s our last show of the year! Sara and Katel talk about what they’ll be bringing with them into 2020, what they’ll be leaving behind, and what all of you should listen to while Strong Feelings is off the air this winter. Podcast: Do You Enjoy Sitting at Your Computer All Day?In this video:00:30 – A traders’ journey and why so many give up01:19 – Sitting for hours watching charts01:47 – When I started trading02:30 – You find it doesn’t work out03:12 – Our approach to trading: Less is More03:34 – I’ve traded just the daily and weekly charts this week04:00 – A lack of knowledge05:02 – Trading a variety of charts05:44 – Have a life and trade wellAs a Forex trader, do you really enjoy sitting at your computer all day waiting for trading set ups? If you do that's fine. But if you don't and you'd like to know how to change your trading so it's more enjoyable, I have exactly what you need. Listen up, let's get into it.Hey traders, it's Andrew Mitchem here, the Forex Trading Coach with video and podcast number 325.A traders’ journey and why so many give upNow this video is all about how people progress from absolute beginners through to good traders and the reason why so many people tend to give up trading too early, probably. So natural progression is this; you probably have heard about trading, you might have been and done a course maybe it's online, maybe it's in person somewhere, big group of people. You may have known someone that's traded, you've looked on forums. All those type of things, you see an ad online somewhere. Whatever is you get into trading with this huge hype and expectation of it's going to be fun, it's going to be easy and you're going to set out your charts and you're going to see some trades and make some money. That's how it's all going to plan out.Of course the reality is that doesn't happen, pretty much in all cases actually.Sitting for hours watching chartsMost people when they start because they have the buzz and the excitement of trading is that they think they're going to have to sit there and they do sit there and make yourself have time to sit there watching charts. The problem is is that when you're sat at your computer that's when you're making a trade happen, like you're almost forcing a trade to happen, you're wanting it to happen, you're waiting for it to happen. So people tend to take trade set ups that are not really that good a quality. When I started tradingNow back when I started trading, 15 plus years ago, we only had dial up internet. Of course if you were lucky enough to get dial up to actually have a stable connection, and you only had a very small data plan like a gigabyte a month let's say. Which back then was actually really quite good. I did the same. I was looking for trades and kids were in bed, I'm ready, computer's working, internet's working, let's take a trade. What are we going to do? Of course the danger is that the market wasn't ready or there were no set ups. That's what people still do today. But you have the ease of high-speed internet and fibre, and cheap data plans and mobile phones et cetera. So you're wanting to take more and more trades. You find it doesn’t work outWhat actually you find out is that over time that doesn't work. Unfortunately before you find that out, most people actually give up because they're losing too much money, they're blowing their accounts. Or they are just spending so much time that it's not sustainable. Either you get that or they start absolute hiss and roar, go really crazy, and then find that real life continues and jobs and family and whatever it might be and I cannot commit that amount of time to sitting at my charts or I get home from work and the last thing I want to do is then sit down in front of a computer looking at charts. All of that is very understandable. That's why so many people give up.Our approach to trading: Less is MoreOur approach is the complete opposite to that. You'll find that most full time traders and most good traders,

For the past two episodes, the Getting Smart team have envisioned what the future of learning might look like with the authors of Education Reimagined’s new paper, “School’s Out.” On their final episode of their three-part series, Tom speaks with Tom Rooney, the Superintendent of Lindsay Unified Public Schools. Lindsay Unified is located in the central valley of California. They are situated in one of the highest poverty areas in the nation. 100% of their learners are on free or reduced lunch, 53% come to their doors not speaking English, and about 33% come from the migrant farming community. They have a deep understanding that many learners have not been receiving the level of education that leads to success in life. With that in mind, their work focuses on meeting learners at their level, with student-centered and performance-based work to lead them to success — and it’s proven successful! They’ve gone from having a 67% graduation rate to a 94% graduation rate this past year. In today’s episode, Tom and Tom speak about lessons learned from Lindsay Unified and how the community can play an active role in the future of learning, as well as key learnings from Tom’s paper: “School’s Out: Who Takes Responsibility for the Education of Young People?” Key Takeaways: [:14] About today’s episode. [1:00] Tom welcomes Tom Rooney to the podcast. [1:09] Tom explains the origin story of the student-centered, performance-based work he’s doing at Lindsay Unified Public Schools. [6:06] About Lindsay Unified’s vision of meeting learners at their level and how that guarantees success. [8:36] How Lindsay Unified’s teachers seamlessly work together and the incredible benefits of that. [11:06] Tom speaks about the support they’ve received from various organizations and how it has helped Lindsay Unified. [13:52] The work that Tom and Lindsay Unified have accomplished with the help of Empower Learning. [15:30] Tom and Tom dive into Tom’s paper: “School’s Out: Who Takes Responsibility for the Education of Young People?” Tom first speaks about the role professional educators might play if the current system was reimagined. [19:33] Tom’s ideas (from his paper) on the two new roles of personal life coaches and opportunity creators. [22:04] Barriers and opportunities to Tom’s vision for the future of learning in Lindsay. [24:49] Will there be any transportation barriers in Tom’s vision? [26:55] As Tom thinks about the School’s Out conversation, he offers some practical pieces of advice for those in education could work on this week. Matthew 28:16-20 What we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. (2 Corinthians 4:5) We exist to Proclaim and Display Jesus UP — IN — OUT 1. UP = Worship -Worship and Doubt -Worship and Power 2. IN = Discipleship -Goal is Life Transformation, not behavior modification -People learn/grow in different ways 3. OUT = Missions -Crossing Boundaries -Focus on Sending, not just seating Why is this important? 1. Trinity- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -Gloria Dei = Glory to God (Father) -Imago Dei = Image of God (Son) -Missio Dei = Mission of God (Spirit) 2. Church Strategy -How do we facilitate and balance UP, IN, and OUT? 3. Personal Goals -Does my life reflect UP, IN, and OUT? -What areas need the most focus?
