In this episode of the Women in Safety Podcast, Alanna Ball and Amy Morris take a closer look at incident investigations and the bigger system issues that often sit behind safety events. Rather than defaulting to worker blame or behaviour-based explanations, they explore what happens when controls are poorly designed, hard to apply, or simply do not hold up in real working conditions. The conversation highlights why incident investigations need to go beyond surface-level findings and ask better questions about how work is actually done. Alanna and Amy discuss the importance of classifying incidents properly, understanding the difference between workable and unworkable controls, and looking at the wider organisational conditions that shape risk and decision-making.Episode HighlightsWhy correct incident classification matters when deciding where effort and resources should goHow many incidents involve controls that are difficult or unrealistic to apply in real-world conditionsThe difference between easy, difficult, and unworkable controls, and why that matters in preventionCommon examples of control failure, including broken equipment, impractical PPE, and the workarounds people create to get the job doneHow poor system design and organisational culture can weaken even well-intended controlsWhy investigation methods need to ask better questions, not just produce quick conclusionsHow strict rule enforcement can sometimes drive unsafe workarounds instead of safer workThe role of wider system weaknesses, beyond individual behaviour, in shaping incident outcomesPractical ways to build more resilient controls through stronger design and organisational learningWhy storytelling matters in incident reporting and helps reveal the full picture behind an eventThis episode is a strong reminder that incidents rarely make sense when viewed through blame alone. Alanna and Amy encourage safety professionals to look more closely at the systems, controls, and organisational conditions surrounding an event, rather than stopping at what the worker did or did not do. When investigations focus on the full story, including the pressures, design flaws, and control gaps involved, they become far more useful for learning and prevention. For anyone working in health and safety, this conversation is a call to strengthen investigations, improve control design, and build systems that work in practice, not just on paper.Connect with Amy:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/amyleahmorris Stay connected with Women in SafetyWebsitewww.womeninsafety.netVisit the website for upcoming events, programs, and community updates, and subscribe to the newsletter to stay informed throughout the year.Instagramwww.instagram.com/womeninsafetyFollow along for conversations, community highlights, and insights from women across the health and safety profession.Become an Empowered Memberwww.womeninsafety.net/empoweredmembersExplore Empowered Membership to access deeper learning opportunities, exclusive events, and meaningful connection within the Women in Safety community.
Quick SummaryIn this candid solo session, Kelsey answers your top marketing questions — covering pricing strategy, how to evaluate cold PR pitches, and what to do when your Instagram feels scattered and purposeless. Woven throughout are honest life updates: navigating her second pregnancy, the power of accountability, and how to embrace change as an entrepreneur. In This EpisodeWhy accountability partners (and assistant nudges) are the secret to getting things doneHow pregnancy #2 has looked very different — and why Kelsey is packing her calendar before mat leaveDebating winter babies vs. summer babies (she genuinely wants your input)The Picasso story and what it teaches you about price vs. valueHow to know if your prices are too low, too high, or just rightThe truth about cold pitch emails — when to say yes and when to runA step-by-step Instagram strategy for business owners who feel scatteredThe four-part Instagram sales funnel: Create, Connect, Collect, ConvertWhy showing up imperfectly beats waiting for perfect every timeKey TakeawaysAccountability changes everything. You'll cancel on yourself, but you won't cancel on someone else. Use that psychology intentionally — schedule with others, hire coaches, or create external check-ins to move your biggest projects forward.Pricing is a gut check. If you feel undervalued after every transaction, your prices are too low. If you feel like you're ripping someone off, they may be too high. When it feels like a mutual exchange of value — you've nailed it.Evaluate cold pitches with your wallet and your gut. Only pay for media opportunities you're 100% okay losing. Ask for traffic stats, audience demographics, and backlink terms. Some are incredible; many aren't.Brand pillars create consistency. Before you open Instagram again, define 3–4 content pillars — at least one professional, one personal — and some rules for what you won't post. Decision fatigue is the enemy of consistency.Don't stop at "create." Most business owners post and walk away. The real magic is in connecting with your audience, collecting intel on what they need, and then actually making an offer.Memorable Quotes"Picasso was pricing based on his value. He's put in thousands and thousands of hours — so to charge on an hourly basis simply does not make sense.""Once you make that leap, you can then decide: is this the right place for me, or do I need to keep moving forward? That's what you do through life — you just keep turning the next page.""The ratio of people who show up and create good content is probably 1% of Instagram users. The people who want to consume? The work we produce gets all the attention. But the real question is: what's happening behind the scenes that makes that work possible? In this episode of The Handbook, Harv sits down with creative operations expert Nicky Russell, co-founder of WDC, We Deliver Change, and chair of the Creative Operations Summit in London. Together they explore the discipline of creative ops – the systems, culture, and leadership required to help creative teams do their best work. What starts as a conversation about creative teams quickly expands into something bigger: how operations leaders create the environment where great work can actually happen. Here's what we dive into:What creative operations actually is – and why it's becoming a strategic role inside agencies, brands, and consultanciesWhy ops is fundamentally about culture – not just processes, workflows, and systemsWhy happiness and psychological safety matter more than most leaders realise when it comes to producing great workHow creative ops and business ops are converging as technology and AI reshape how work gets doneHow learning to speak the language of different stakeholders is often the key to unlocking real influence.Whether you work in a creative environment or not, the themes in this conversation will resonate with any ops leader trying to build a healthier, more effective organisation.Additional Resources:

God is into the details—and this episode of The VIBE will change how you see the signs, nudges, and moments you've been overlooking. If you've ever asked God for clarity, direction, or reassurance when visibility feels faint, this conversation is for you.In this Vibe episode, I share a deeply personal story about my mama, my daughter McKenna, a simple prayer for a sign, and how God answered through the smallest details—on a dog walk, through a friend, a phone call, and unexpected encouragement. These aren't coincidences. They're confirmations.Rooted in Proverbs 7, we unpack what it really means to seek, store up, and apply wisdom—especially when life gets dark and temptation sounds smooth, convincing, and harmless. Wisdom keeps you filled. A lack of it leaves you vulnerable. My mama used to say, “God knows your name—and He won't leave a stone unturned.” Turns out, she was right. We talk about:Why God speaks through detailsHow wisdom sharpens your awarenessThe “dimmer switch” effect of temptationWhy pleasure can dull pain until the damage is doneHow anything contrary to God's will can quietly pull you off purposeThis episode is a reminder that God knows exactly what you need, exactly when you need it. If you're looking for signs, cues, nods, or confirmation—He's already providing them.God is into the details. Always has been.

On paper, Vickie and her business partner Lisa look almost identical in Human Design: they are both 2/4 Manifesting Generators. Same Type. Same Profile. Same label. But in real life, they move through business very differently. In this episode of Unjaded, Vickie walks you through a side by side chart comparison to show you just how nuanced Human Design really is. She breaks down the differences in their channels, Centres, definition, and energy so you can stop reducing yourself to “just” your Type and Profile and start understanding how your specific design actually wants to operate. You will hear how things like a defined Root vs undefined Root, split definition vs single definition, and an undefined G Centre vs a heavily defined G Centre change the way two “identical” 2/4 Manifesting Generators experience pressure, direction, identity, pace, and partnership in business. If you have ever wondered why you do not resonate with generic Human Design Type descriptions, this episode will feel like a deep exhale. What You'll Learn in This Episode:Why “I'm a 2/4 Manifesting Generator” is just the beginning of your Human Design storyHow the 2/4 profile actually shows up in real life through community, hermitting, and long term relationshipsWhat happens when two big Manifesting Generator auras share a business and a physical spaceHow the 34–57 channel (powerful intuitive response) operates differently than the 34–20 channel of charismaThe impact of defined vs undefined Root Centres on pressure, urgency, and getting things doneHow split definition vs single definition changes the way you process, decide, and move in businessWhy an undefined G Centre questions identity and direction while a defined G Centre quietly holds the lineHow dormant gates get “lit up” in relationship and what that means for your patterns in intimacy, boundaries, and conflictPractical ways to use Human Design in partnership so you stop expecting other people to work exactly like youKey Takeaway:Two people can share the same Type and Profile and still be wired completely differently. Text us your questions! What happens when the foundation of your identity crumbles beneath you? When the lens through which you understood the world no longer works? Psychologist Dr. Daryl Van Tongeren joins us to explore this profound transition that one-fifth of Americans have experienced—leaving religion behind.Drawing from eight years of groundbreaking research across multiple countries, Van Tongeren walks us through what he calls "the great disillusionment," which he documents in his book Done: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion. We discover that most people who check "none" on religious surveys were previously religious believers—what he calls the "dones." Their past faith doesn't simply disappear but leaves "religious residue" that continues influencing their thoughts, behaviors, fears, and values long after they've walked away. This conversation ventures beyond theory into practical wisdom for navigating life's deepest questions. Van Tongeren shares his personal journey through faith crisis after his brother's tragic death and how it shaped his research. We explore why rigid faith systems often collapse under scrutiny while flexible faith proves more resilient, how former fundamentalists frequently jump into new ideological extremes, and why developing "existential distress tolerance" might be the most crucial skill for our anxious age.Whether you're questioning faith, have left religion behind, or simply want to understand this massive cultural shift, this episode offers profound insights into finding meaning and purpose at the intersection of psychology, philosophy, and spirituality. Van Tongeren challenges us to courageously engage life's existential realities rather than avoiding them—suggesting this honest confrontation might be the only path to flourishing.=====Want to support us?The best way is to subscribe to our Patreon. Human beings are meaning-seeking creatures. This search is at the heart of religions all around the world. Over the past century or so, however, religion, especially in the West, has been in decline, and many commentators have marked the rise of the “nones” and “dones”--those who have no religious affiliation and those who have abandoned religion with no intention to return. What factors are behind these shifts? What does the search for meaning in the absence of religion look like? What is spirituality and what is its relevance in our contemporary context? In this episode, I interview a psychologist and philosopher who are trying to make sense of these trends.Daryl Van Tongeren, PhD, is a professor of psychology at Hope College and the director of the Frost Center for Social Science Research. A social psychologist, he has published more than 200 scholarly articles and chapters, and four books, on topics such as religion, meaning in life, and virtues. Most recently, his work has focused on the psychological and social processes of leaving religion and undergoing religious change, culminating in his newest book, Done: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion. His research has been covered by numerous media outlets, including the New York Times, BBC, Hidden Brain, Washington Post, The Atlantic, NPR-affiliated radio stations, Scientific American, and Men's Health. His work has been supported by numerous grants from the John Templeton Foundation, and he has won national and international awards for his research. He is also an associate editor for The Journal of Positive Psychology. He enjoys running, biking, and hiking near where he lives with his wife, Sara, in Holland, MI. David McPherson is Professor of Philosophy in the Hamilton Center for Classical and Civic Education at the University of Florida as well as Affiliate Professor in the Department of Philosophy. McPherson works in the areas of ethics (especially virtue ethics), political philosophy, meaning in life, and philosophy of religion. McPherson is currently the project leader for a three-year Templeton-funded grant project on “Spiritual Yearning and the Problem of Spiritual Alienation,” which will result in his third book monograph titled Spiritual Alienation and the Quest for God as well as an edited volume titled Spiritual Yearning in an Age of Secularization: Philosophical, Psychological, and Sociological Perspectives. In this second part of our conversation, we talk about:The Search for Meaning and Spiritual YearningSpiritual Alienation and the Struggle for AuthenticityThe Role of Yearning in Psychological GrowthThe Existential Challenge of Living FullySpiritual Practices and the Path to ReceptivityThe Future of Spirituality in a Secular AgeTo learn more about Daryl and his work, you can find him at:Website: http://darylvantongeren.com/Instagram: https://instagram.com/darylvantongeren/X: https://x.com/drvantongerenDone: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion: https://www.apa.org/pubs/books/done To learn more about David and his work, you can find him at:Website: https://davidmcpherson.weebly.com/X: https://Support the show

This week I had the pleasure of being joined by Dr. Daryl Van Tongeren to discuss his latest book "Done: How to Flourish After Leaving Religion". It is no secret that Americans today are deconstructing and leaving religion in record numbers. This shift comes with a high price as people's entire meaning making system is being taken away from them. How can people who are done with religion find meaning and purpose in the world? How can they process the grief that plagues these religious changes? Daryl draws from extensive research and psychological theories to examine the emotional and social processes involved with religious change and offers science-based guidance for building a new life after religion. What happens when we do this though is we tend to fall off a little bit.My voice is also pretty weak right now, but I know that I need to focus on what I need to prioritize. I can control:Time I put into my podcastTime I go to bedTime I put into researching guestsBut there are some things that are not in my control. I cannot controlExternal events I wasn't aware of until the moment - what's done is doneHow people respond to meThe weather outsideWhen I remember this I am much more able to enjoy things - because I put the bulk of my energy into things I'm able to control - instead of things that can change out of nowhere.Accepting this brings freedom.Support the show
