Last week I wrote about one of Dr John Gottman's books, “Why Marriages Succeed Or Fail And How You Can Make Yours Last.” That book lays out most of his foundational ideas about marriage, including the four horsemen of the apocalypse; Criticism, Contempt, Defensiveness and Stonewalling. And the different kinds of stable couples. If you're hearing about all this for the first time, it's probably worth reading that article first. Here's the link. This week I will talk about his other more prescriptive book called “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.” The principles he shares are based on the extensive research that he's done on couples in his “Love Lab” in Seattle, Washington. I'm mentioning this to signal the idea that it's not based on his hunches, but on well-researched data. Before we get into that, let's take another look at how Gottman predicts divorce. The signsLast week, I explained that Gottman can predict with over 91% accuracy whether a couple would stay together long term. Here are the signs he looks for. Harsh Start-up: How a conversation begins often predicts how it is going to end. So if someone starts a discussion with criticism, blame, sarcasm or accusations, it likely won't end well. The Four Horsemen: There's more detail on this in the previous article. Gottman looks for these horsemen in the couple's arguments. Flooding: If either partner gets psychologically or emotionally overwhelmed during the argument, it doesn't bode well. It's worse if the other doesn't pick up on this and drags it on while the counterpart is now flooded.Body language: Crossed arms, leaning away from each other, not making eye contact and not mirroring each other's movements. These are all signs that things aren't going in a good direction.Failed repair attempts: When tension rises in a conflict, sometimes a partner will attempt to de-escalate with anything; a silly comment, humour or even directly saying we need to take a step back and cool down. Those are called repair attempts and they help to prevent emotional flooding. If those attempts don't work to de-escalate the situation, it is a bad sign. Bad memories: Things were not always bad. The problem is that when bad things are happening, couples rewrite the past negatively, forgetting all the good memories and remembering all the bad ones. They can't seem to remember that earlier magic even when they're asked how they met, about their wedding day or other special moments. Everything is negative. Withdrawal: When one partner is distant, calm and completely emotionally disengaged during arguments that's a sign that the end is near. Is there anything a couple can do to fix things at this point? Yes! Gottman gives seven principles. The seven principles are not about focussing on these areas of negativity and difficulty. Rather, each of them builds trust and friendship, which is the bedrock of successful relationships. The seven principles for making relationships workMost relationship advice focuses on the same old pointers; better conflict resolution and communication skills. According to Gottman, getting couples to disagree more “nicely” might reduce their stress levels while they argue but frequently it's not enough to revitalise marriages that are on the rocks. In fact, after studying many couples whose relationships made it through troubled times he realised that they were never perfect unions. They still had significant differences in temperament, interests and family values. They had frequent conflicts, they argued over money, work, kids, housekeeping, sex and in-laws as much as the failed couples. “At the heart of the Seven Principles approach is the simple truth that happy marriages are based on a deep friendship. By this I mean a mutual respect for and enjoyment of each other's company. These couples tend to know each other intimately-they are well versed in each other's likes, dislikes, personality quirks, hopes, and dreams. They have an abiding regard for each other and express this fondness not just in the big ways but through small gestures day in and day out.” — Dr John Gottman, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.Gottman's principles focus on increasing the number of positive interactions that happen in a relationship. This is because he discovered you need to load up several positive interactions to counteract the effects of one negative interaction. In fact, there's a magic number here. According to the research, you need five positive interactions for every negative interaction. Here are the principles.1. Enhance your love mapsKnow your partner better. Know what they like, who they like to talk to at work, what they do all day, what their passions are and what their history is. Good couples are intimately familiar with their partner's world, which makes them able to weather the storms when they arise. With how busy life is these days, I think this is one area that needs to be watched closely otherwise we'll discover that we've been estranged from our partners. So even if it's not your favourite thing, teach yourself to take interest in the things your partner loves. You may not care much about spoken word poetry but if that's what your partner loves, you lose nothing by learning it enough to have a stimulating conversation with them about it. If you don't know where to start with learning it, ask them to teach you. I'm sure they'd love that and it will create an opportunity for you to bond. “… Although he's not religious, he accompanies her to church each Sunday because it's important to her. And although she's not crazy about spending a lot of time with their relatives, she has pursued a friendship with Nathaniel's mother and sisters because family matters so much to him. If all of this sounds humdrum and unromantic, it's anything but. In small but important ways, Olivia and Nathaniel are maintaining the friendship that is the foundation of their love. As a result, they have a marriage that is far more passionate than do couples who punctuate their lives together with romantic vacations and lavish anniversary gifts but have fallen out of touch in their daily lives.” — Dr John Gottman, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.It should go without saying that learning to relate to your partner's interests and even learning to love them will improve your friendship overall. And couples who are good friends experience a lot of positive sentiment override. Their positive thoughts about each other and their marriage are so pervasive that they tend to supersede their negative feelings. Therefore it takes a much more significant conflict to cause them to lose their equilibrium. I'm not suggesting that you should know as much about football as their Sunday social football teammates, but each interest of theirs that you choose to ignore is a connection opportunity missed. And it's one area of the love map of your relationship that you've chosen to be unfamiliar with. 2. Nature fondness and admiration You need to cherish each other and honour what is good and true and positive about your partner. After all, you chose them for many positive reasons. Try to remember those. The absolute foundation of all relationships is fondness and admiration and if you don't have those, the relationship will not make it. “Fondness and admiration are two of the most crucial elements in a rewarding and long-lasting romance. Although happily married couples may feel driven to distraction at times by their partner's personality flaws, they still feel that the person they married is worthy of honor and respect. They cherish each other, which is critical to keeping their Sound Relationship House intact and preventing betrayal. If fondness and admiration are completely missing, reviving the relationship is impossible.” — Dr John Gottman, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. It's very easy to forget or stop noticing your partner's good qualities, especially if you've been together for a long time. When you forget these, the negatives will start to seem more glaring and if you're not careful, after a while that's all you'll see. So talk about your partner's good qualities, tell them what you like about them. Complement them often. When they do something you particularly love, tell them about it. Reminisce on your past; how you met, what you felt on your first date, and what you told your friends when you first realised that you love this person. Even long-buried positive feelings can be exhumed simply by thinking and talking about them. This will help you keep that fundamental sense that your partner is worthy of being respected and loved. You'll need this during the storms of life. Finally, it's important to tell them about the things you love about them in private, but it is also important to tell them in public. Make your fondness and admiration publicly known. No one wants to only be loved behind closed doors. 3. Turn towards each other instead of awayA rare commodity in today's world is attention. Focus your attention on your partner when they make a bid for your attention. Listen without distraction, be helpful and be present. Sometimes bids for attention are wrapped up in anger or blame. When this happens, focus on the ask and not the negativity. Your attention is the most precious thing you can give to someone. I get particularly irritated when I'm try to get my partner's attention and they listen while on their phone or they turn to me while keeping their phone in their hand, the screen on ready to scroll to the next post in the feed. That irritation is heightened if they immediately reach for their phone the moment I stop talking. I know I'm overly sensitive because I've put a lot of intention into making sure I put my phone away during any kind of quality time so I feel like I deserve that in return. Especially in the moments when I clearly need my partner to be fully present with me. “In marriage, couples are always making what I call "bids" for each other's attention, affection, humor, or support. Bids can be as minor as asking for a back rub or as significant as seeking help in carrying the burden when an aging parent is ill. The partner responds to each bid either by turning toward the spouse or turning away. A tendency to turn toward your partner is the basis of trust, emotional connection, passion, and a satisfying sex life. Comical as it may sound, romance is strengthened in the supermarket aisle when your partner asks, "Are we out of butter?" and you answer, "I don't know. Let me go get some just in case," instead of shrugging apathetically. It grows when you know your spouse is having a bad day at work and you take a few seconds out of your schedule to send him an encouraging text. In all of these instances, partners are making a choice to turn toward each other rather than away.” — Dr John Gottman, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.If you ignore your partner's pleas for attention, eventually they will stop asking. 4. Let your partner influence youThis is also called power-sharing. Let your partner's feelings, thoughts and ideas influence your decisions. Co-operate and yield. Marriage should always be a partnership, not a dictatorship. According to Gottman, this is a problem that's most prevalent in men than in women. If you're in a relationship and you're only looking out for what matters to you, regardless of how it affects anyone else then you need to reconsider that if you want your relationship to survive. Being in a relationship comes with sacrificing some of what you want to make space for what your partner wants. That's how you make a life together. And that's how you ensure your lives grow in the same direction. A marriage can't work unless both parties honour and respect each other. This is true regardless of your belief system. 5. Solve your solvable problemsEvery relationship is a union of individuals who bring to it their own opinions, personality quirks, and values. All conflicts in relationships fall into one of two categories: either they can be resolved or they are perpetual, which means they will be a part of your lives forever in some form or another. Once you're able to identify and define your various disagreements, you'll be able to customize your coping strategies depending on which of these two types of conflict you're having. Gottman's research reveals that 69% of a couples' problems are perpetual. You want to have a baby but your partner says he's not ready yet and doesn't know when he'll be ready. She wants sex far more frequently than he does. He's very lax about housework and rarely does his share until she nags, which makes him angry. Despite these perpetual differences, couples can remain satisfied with their relationships if they learn to deal with their unmovable problems in a way that doesn't make them overwhelming. One solution to perpetual problems is to learn to live with them and approach them with good humour. “At times it gets better; on occasion it gets worse. But because they keep acknowledging the problem and talking about it, they prevent it from overwhelming their relationship. These couples intuitively understand that some difficulties are inevitable, much the way chronic physical ailments are unavoidable as you get older. They are like a trick knee, a bad back, an irritable bowel, or tennis elbow. We may not enjoy having these problems, but we are able to cope by avoiding situations that worsen them, and by developing strategies and routines that help ease them.” — Dr John Gottman, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. The remaining 31% are solvable problems. Work to solve these through compromise. Gottman gives a process for solving these which includes softening your startup, not including blame, criticism or contempt, making some repair attempts, de-escalating away from emotional flooding and compromising by finding common emotional ground. 6. Overcoming gridlockGridlock occurs with problems that haven't been solved well and have hardened into uncomfortable sore spots. This mostly happens with perpetual problems which centre around fundamental differences in personality or lifestyle needs. For example, we have what I believe to be a perpetual problem around how we spend leisure time. I like to be out and about around people and I gladly welcome any opportunity to do so without batting an eye. My wife is a homebody. She will take any opportunity to be at home relaxing and watching TV. So, whenever we go out somewhere, I get on edge at some point because I'm enjoying and would love to stick around till the end but I know I'll be getting a text soon about going home. And when we're home, anytime we have some free time, I'm sure she gets similar anxiety knowing I'll come saying let's go outside for a walk or I'll tell her of some invitation I just accepted somewhere. Now, I can obviously go out on my own and she can also relax at home on her own. The problem is that both of us don't want to be doing these things alone and we'd rather do them with each other. Many times gridlock happens when you have aspirations, desires and dreams that have not been acknowledged or respected by your partner. So, try to uncover those dreams with respectful and open questions and curiosity. Understand those differences so that you won't continually bash your heads in situations where you can't find a satisfying compromise for. You'll find it easier to accept them and even have some inside jokes around them. Perpetual problems are like an allergy, they're not going away but you can treat them so that they don't ruin your life. 7. Create shared meaning“We got along okay and really loved each other, but I didn't feel that connected to Kevin. It was like we were roommates who made love." Helen, a "devout feminist," had always prided herself on her independence. At first she thought it was great that she and Kevin had their own lives-separate careers, interests, and friends. But the longer they were married, and especially after they had children, the more she felt something was lacking. She didn't want to give up her strong sense of individual identity, but she wanted more from her marriage. After attending our workshop, she realized what it was: she wanted to feel more like she and Kevin were a family.” — Dr John Gottman, The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.Sometimes what is missing is a sense of shared meaning. People are happiest when they have meaning in their lives. Relationships are no different. In addition to everything else, relationships also have a dimension that has to do with creating an inner life together—a culture rich with symbols and rituals, and an appreciation for your roles and goals that link you and that lead you to understand who you are as a couple. Without that, you may feel lost, like your happy relationship isn't going anywhere. So how do you create shared meaning? Develop shared couple-based rituals, something that you do together and that holds meaning for the two of you. Be supportive of each other's roles. Discuss shared goals and understand the values and symbols that uniquely define your relationship. We usually think of culture in terms of large ethnic groups. But culture can also be created by just two people who have agreed to share their lives. Each couple can create its own microculture. and like other cultures, this small culture can have its own customs (like Saturday dinner out), rituals (like watching every new Marvel movie together regardless of circumstance), and myths—like the stories the couple tell themselves (whether true or false or embellished) that explain their sense of what their relationship is like and what it means to be part of it. Developing a shared culture doesn't mean you're aligned on everything. Instead, it's about creating a mashup that honours and incorporates each other's dreams. And it is flexible enough to grow as you grow. When a relationship has this shared sense of meaning, conflicts will be much less intense and perpetual problems less likely to lead to gridlock. Final thoughtsIt might seem like a lot of work but happy relationships are beneficial to almost every other part of our lives. From our mental, physical and emotional health to our financial and community wellbeing. So they're worth the extra work. Gottman has a variety of worksheets and questionnaires in this book so if you want to give his method a shot, you're guaranteed that a lot of work has been put into making it simple and practical. Gottman recommends intentionally spending time working on your relationship. He recommends at least six hours a week. I know that all seems a little textbookish for something that is supposed to be smooth and enjoyable but well, that's what the experts have found to be what works. And I'm sure none of us needs to be told that relationships can make our lives really, really miserable if we don't put in the time to make them work. Finally, don't let negativity slide. Better to address it early than to wait until it has turned into something way worse. Let me know what you think. I always appreciate comments and SubStack has a nice comment feature right on the article. But if you would rather keep your comment private, email me. 2022 Resolutions:As the number of subscribers to the newsletter is growing. Is hate being taught to our children in the public, and some private schools? A couple months ago my cousin brought to my attention a book that his 8th grade daughter had been assigned for a book review in her NW Iowa school. I was familiar with some of the toxicity that Ibram X. Kendi had been spreading, but I was not aware that his material was being used in our public school system, much less that it was being taught to 8th graders, and even younger. "Stamped" Racism, Antiracism and YouThis was not a book I had read, and I admittedly did not want to spend the money on it, but I didn't feel it would be right if I discussed it on my show without doing so. In the beginning, authors Ibram X Kendi and Jason Reynolds define in their terms, segregationists, assimilationists, and antiracists. For the remainder of the book, they use their version of revisionist history to attribute every perceived disparity and/or racial inequity since the beginning of time to "white privilege", segregationist whites, weak black assimilationists, or just the evils of white racism. To discuss this book, that again was assigned to my cousin's 8th grade daughter in a public school in NW Iowa, I invited to the conversation Yael Levin of No Left Turn in Education, Tony Kinnett of The Chalkboard Review, Moshe Levy (volunteer with FAIR) and author of a recently published article on "Stamped for Kids" on FAIR's Substack, and my cousin Chad.Nobody's life has ever been made better by convincing them they are a victim, and books such as "STAMPED" is nothing more than propaganda that is used to create a perpetual victim class in the name of diversity, equity and inclusion. This type of material, when used as learning material for young impressionable minds, drives a solid wedge of division and confusion into a space that should be focusing on unity and civility. Do not miss this conversation! What have you done today to make your life a better life? What have you done today to make the world a better place? The world is a better place if we are better people, and that begins with each of us leading a better life. What the Riff?!?
1986 - September: Bon Jovi “Slippery When Wet”

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 17, 2022 45:15

This is the album that turned heavy metal into pop, or started the hair metal genre of the 80's.  Slippery When Wet was the third studio album by Bon Jovi, and would be their best selling album to date. The band was David Bryan on keyboards, Tico Torres on percussion, Alec John Such on bass, Richie Sambora on guitar, and Jon Bon Jovi on lead vocals and rhythm guitar.Bon Jovi deliberately targeted a mainstream audience with this album.  They wrote 30 songs and auditioned them to teenagers in New York and New Jersey.  The album's songs were then ordered based on the opinions of this teenaged focus group. The band collaborated with Desmond Child, a hall of fame songwriter who wrote songs like "I Was Made for Loving You" by Kiss and Joan Jett's "I Hate Myself for Loving You."  Slippery When Wet would be the top selling album of 1987, and would go 12x platinum.  It would also make Bon Jovi the first glam rock band to have two number 1 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 with "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "Livin' on a Prayer."Bon Jovi - the band, and Jon Bon Jovi as a soloist - would never leave the rock pantheon A-list after this album.   Raise Your HandsJon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this one.  It was the B-side to "You Give Love a Bad Name," and was not released as a single.  If it sounds familiar you might be remembering it from a scene in the Mel Brooks film "Spaceballs."You Give Love a Bad NameThis is the first single from the album and would hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in November 1986.  Child, Bon Jovi, and Sambora re-wrote the song which started as a song for Bonnie Tyler called "If You Were a Woman (And I was a Man)"  The video was directed by Wayne Isham, who was also directing videos for Motley Crue at the same time.  Motley Crue felt betrayed that Wayne would direct a Bon Jovi video, since they were competing with each other at the time.I'd Die for YouThis song is a deeper cut with keyboard work reminiscent of the song "Runaway" from their first album.  Wanted Dead of AliveThis track hit number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and uses old west imagery to describe the lonely life of a rock star.  Bon Jovi and Sambora would perform an acoustic version of this tune on the 1989 MTV Video Music Awards, and would inspire the network to create their "MTV Unplugged" series.   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Glory of Love by Peter Cetera (from the motion picture The Karate Kid part II)This solo song from Chicago front man Peter Cetera was on the charts after being featured in the 1986 summer sequel starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita. STAFF PICKS:Wild, Wild Life by Talking HeadsWayne leads off the staff picks with a critically acclaimed song from the Talking Heads album, "True Stories."  The song was featured in the film "True Stories," a satirical comedy directed by David Byrne, front man for the Talking Heads.  This was the third and last top 40 hit the band would create.Higher Love by Steve WinwoodBrian's staff pick is Winwood's first number 1 hit in the United States.  Will Jennings wrote the lyrics, inspired by his experience with church in the deep South.  Chaka Khan provides the backing vocals, enhancing the gospel feel of the song - a modern day hymn.Sweet Freedom by Michael McDonaldRob's staff pick was featured in the buddy cop movie "Running Scared," starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines.  This was the last top 10 hit to date for McDonald.  In addition to his solo work, McDonald has worked with many musicians including Steely Dan, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross, and most famously as lead vocalist for the Doobie Brothers, with which he is touring today.Venus by BananaramaBruce finishes the staff picks with a number 7 hit from an English pop group formed by the trio of Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey, and Keren Woodward.  The original was released in 1969 by Netherlands group Shocking Blue.  Bananarama began covering this song when they first formed in 1980, but didn't release the single until they had recorded original songs so they would be taken seriously as musicians. COMEDY TRACK:Big Fat Blonde by The RainmakersThe Rainmakers released their debut album in 1986.  One of their fans was horror novelist Stephen King, who quoted the band's lyrics in some of his novels.

As a human being, our brains, our behaviors, and sense of reality are oriented around stories. The stories we tell describe what happens, what is happening and what will happen. For the most part though we experience our stories as THE TRUTH yet in actuality they are a narrative, a perspective we've adopted and may or may not be grounded in "facts."In this episode coach Daniel D'Neuville talks about the nature of our stories and our compulsion to answer the question "WHY?" He talks about the difference between stories that report or describe what is, and generative stories. Generative stories are stories that we tell that don't seem to be true at the moment but in our telling of them, generate a new future. Most people tell stories that describe the past and the present, that was created by past stories, then we take stories of the past and then forecast them into the future. In this episode, Daniel gives a prescription to begin identifying your stories and where the empower you and/or disempower youThis episode is the beginning of a series on self-concept self-identity and our stories that help define them. It's time to talk science on the Yay For Business Podcast. Today I am discussing one of my favorite topics that I have researched quite a bit: energy management. We always hear about how to manage our time and squeeze more hours into the working day, but it turns out, that is not what we should concentrate on. Consider this episode your entrepreneurial intervention for pivoting your focus from time management to energy management. Contrary to what so many entrepreneurs say, you don't need to find more time; you need to maximize the time you have by using your energy efficiently.   Energy is a vital resource for business and life. By the end of today's episode, you will have a better understanding of where your energy comes from and how you can use that energy to benefit your business. I am excited to share both my personal experiences and scientific research about why our bodies need to feel both stress and rest. By tuning into our energy cycles, we can prepare ourselves for stressful work and restful vacation times.  In today's episode, we're specifically coveringWhere energy comes from at the atomic levelThe importance of paying attention to your energyFight or flight vs. rest and repairThe limitations of working too muchHow energy works in a cycleUsing energy to build a business that grows without youThis episode is part 3 of 4 in our Secret to Freedom series. New York native Joe Satriani had previously recorded an album in 1986, and ran up some credit card credit card debt in the process.  He paid off the debt from his earnings as a member of the Greg Kihn Band, but stayed on a low budget of $13,000 when he recorded his second and all-instrumental studio album, Surfing with the Alien.  This would be a break-out album for the guitar virtuoso.Satriani began playing guitar at age 14 under the inspiration of Jimi Hendrix.  Supposedly he heard of Hendrix's death at football practice, and announced he was quitting the sport to become a guitarist.  Satriani taught guitar to a number of students including Kirk Hammett of Metallica, David Bryson of the Counting Crows, and perhaps most notably fellow Carle Place High School alumni Steve Vai.This album relied on drum machines rather heavily, with percussionist Jeff Campitelli recording overdubs to flesh out the pieces.  Satriani played on two Kramer Pacer guitars and a Stratocaster guitar for the album, and would change the pickups to get different sounds.  The cover artwork was originally a picture of Marvel Comics' Silver Surfer until the price for renewal grew too hefty in 2018, at which time it was replaced with a silver guitar.Satriani has been a "hired gun" with a number of groups including Alice Cooper, Blue Oyster Cult, Deep Purple, the Yardbirds, and even Spinal Tap for their 1992 album.  He is also known for his work with the supergroup Chickenfoot, and for founding the G3 tour. Surfing with the AlienThis is the first and title track to the album.  The title popped into Satriani's head when he was thinking about what it would sound like if aliens came to Earth but were just looking for fun rather than global conquest.Always with Me, Always with YouThis is the most popular track off the album.  Joe Satriani wrote it as a love song for his wife, Rubina, and it is an instrumental power ballad.CirclesIf you haven't heard the album as a whole, you likely have not heard this deeper cut.  It has a slow start and finish, with a hard thrashing center.  It will give you a good sense for Satriani's playing style when using a slower tempo.  Satch BoogieSatriani composed this hard rocking song after a car accident in 1986 when he was in a neck brace and on pain medication.  Supposedly the concept was about what it would sound like if there was a horn section trying to play with Gene Krupa (the jazz drummer on "Sing, Sing, Sing") while his drum set was falling down a flight of stairs.  This is the only track which uses live percussion. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sweet Little Sixteen  by Chuck Berry (from the motion picture Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll)This documentary film featured two of Chuck Berry's 1986 concerts in celebration of his 60th birthday. STAFF PICKS:It's A Sin by Pet Shop BoysRob's synth-heavy staff pick is from the English duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, known as the Pet Shop Boys.  The song off their second album covers the struggle of a gay person in a Catholic environment.  It was intended as a campy song, but perhaps had more meaning than the duo intended.Paper In Fire by John MellencampBrian brings us back to small town USA with a hit off Mellencamp's album Lonesome Jubilee.  The first single released peaked at number 9 in October 1987.  Paper in fire is a reference to Hell from the Bible, taken from the book of Ecclesiastes 7:5-6.  Big Generator by YesAll roads lead to Wayne's staff pick, and the title track from the Yes album.  The Big Generator album followed their immensely successful album 90125, and the lyrics from this song reflects the band's take on the pressure the record labels received to continue producing pop hits.  "Praise, oh praise this anthem generator."I Don't Mind at All by Bourgeois TaggBruce's staff pick is a one-hit wonder from the duet Brent Bourgeois (keyboards, vocals) and Larry Tagg (bass, vocals).  This song is off their second album Yoyo, which was produced by Todd Rundgren.  This is their biggest hit, which peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Blues For Salvador by Carlos SantanaThis instrumental is from another long-running guitar virtuoso who would remain an active force in the rock world for decades.  This is the title track from Carlos Santana's album.

I realized that I was holding my shoulders level with my ears. This won’t do!I’m reminded of a story about a team of pack animals struggling their way up a mountainside. The last pony in line was wearing just a saddle but the horse ahead of him was burdened with boxes and bags and baskets. The pony said: Hey brother, that’s a heavy load you’re carrying! The pack horse turned it’s head and asked: What load? Like a pack horse we get used to carrying so much we don’t even realize what we’re carrying.Practical Tip: Right here, right now, stop and drop your shoulders. Breathe in and out and smile to your shoulders. Thank them for what they’ve been carrying for you. Tell them that in the future you will take care to burden them less. Feel them smiling back at youThis is the place to thrive together. This week, we're beginning a series about the mindset of success. Today's show takes a closer look at the 3 types of people you need in your support network- and the naysayers that need to be booted from your inner circle!Every successful business owner needs plenty of support, and that comes in a lot of different forms. I'm breaking it down into the 3 basic layers:The people that inspire youThis group consists of the people that have already achieved the kind of success that you want for yourself. They are top business owners, leaders and visionaries that inspire you with their achievements. The people that understand youThis group is filled with people that are in the same place you are- namely business owners that are working hard to grow and expand their brand. You understand each other's frustrations and struggles, share ideas and advice, and celebrate each other's accomplishments. The people that love youThis group is by far the most personal and the most important. This group holds the friends, family, and loved ones that are by your side no matter what. They believe in you and support your goals and ambitions, and they've got your back through anything!Once you've created your 3-part support network, it's time to clear out the sources of negativity in your life! https://youtu.be/ldjHba_BFf8 Worship through the Battle. 2 Sam 22 - worship battleYour life is hard- You are going to go through struggles- If you wrote a psalm after going through it what would it say? I trusted myself, I was scared, I was lonely, God did nothing, I lived for myself broke busted and disgusted. This psalm is a summation of the struggles of David- He's recollecting the wins and losses to the point of his life through the lens of song. He's singing a song as he's coming through the battle. Its not exceptional- This is common in the Bible- Song of Israel by the sea (Exodus 15:1-18) Song of Moses (Deuteronomy 32:1-43) Song of Deborah (Judges 5) Song of Habakkuk (Habakkuk 3:1-19)Song of Hannah (1 Samuel 2:1-10) Song of David (2 Samuel 22; Psalm 18)2 Sam 22 is very close to Psalm 18 and speaks to how David got through his struggles and wars.It spoke volumes to the people at the time-and speaks to us today as well. There's a lot to cover- but what I'd like to do is just cover the main themes of the psalm, because the overall themes are the framework by which we understand the entirety of the Psalm. Lets walk through it together and see what David shares with us through this Psalm I praise God He keeps me safe. Read V 1-3 - worship battle He is my fortress, deliverer, strength, I trust him, he's my shield, my refuge, savior from violence,God protected David in many ways- A friend in Jonathan who gave him wise counsel, A wife Michal, a wife who protected him, Samuel who was a great mentor and the Spirit of GodGod kept him safe from Saul, his enemies, distracted people and stopped armies.Psalm 17:8  Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,When you're the apple of God's eye he is going to watch over you. He will protect youThis idea of God's protection is all throughout the OT because God had big plans for Israel to go and conquer nations and even when they had problems- God promised they would endureIsaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, Nor shall the flame scorch you.Nahum 1:7  The Lord is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble; And He knows those who trust in Him.Proverbs 18:10  The name of the Lord is a strong tower; The righteous run to it and are safe. What does it mean to youDo you see how God has kept you safe? How he has watched out for you- looked over you?Do you see the hand of God upon your life? You are still here. He has looked over youDeployed- Psalm 91:7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you. GOD DID THAT FOR ME- HE PROTECTED MEAnd If you don't feel safe- you need to appropriate the scriptures to get some FAITH-God protects his own- he watched out for David and he will watch out for YOU.Deuteronomy 31:6  Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”2 Timothy 4:18  And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!Psalm 121:7-8   I was in trouble, I called on him, He rescues me, he hears me, and saved me READ V 4-20 - worship battle When I call I'm saved from my enemies- surrounded by death Floods of ungodliness Sorrows of Hell and snares of death HE HEARD ME- why? Because those things make him angry! And he did something about it and delivered me!When we see sin and it upsets us, it upsets God even more. He hates wickedness Psalm 11:5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. When we are upset about ungodly behavior, God is even more upsetDavid Called out to God when he was in distress and God heard him. God saved him from it.Psalm 143:9  Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; [a]In You I take shelter.

https://youtu.be/ldjHba_BFf8 Worship through the Battle. 2 Sam 22 - worship battleYour life is hard- You are going to go through struggles- If you wrote a psalm after going through it what would it say? I trusted myself, I was scared, I was lonely, God did nothing, I lived for myself broke busted and disgusted. This psalm is a summation of the struggles of David- He’s recollecting the wins and losses to the point of his life through the lens of song. He’s singing a song as he’s coming through the battle. There’s a lot to cover- but what I’d like to do is just cover the main themes of the psalm, because the overall themes are the framework by which we understand the entirety of the Psalm. Lets walk through it together and see what David shares with us through this Psalm I praise God He keeps me safe. Read V 1-3 - worship battle He is my fortress, deliverer, strength, I trust him, he’s my shield, my refuge, savior from violence,God protected David in many ways- A friend in Jonathan who gave him wise counsel, A wife Michal, a wife who protected him, Samuel who was a great mentor and the Spirit of GodGod kept him safe from Saul, his enemies, distracted people and stopped armies.Psalm 17:8  Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,When you’re the apple of God’s eye he is going to watch over you. He will protect youThis idea of God’s protection is all throughout the OT because God had big plans for Israel to go and conquer nations and even when they had problems- God promised they would endureIsaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. GOD DID THAT FOR ME- HE PROTECTED MEAnd If you don’t feel safe- you need to appropriate the scriptures to get some FAITH-God protects his own- he watched out for David and he will watch out for YOU.Deuteronomy 31:6  Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”2 Timothy 4:18  And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!Psalm 121:7-8   I was in trouble, I called on him, He rescues me, he hears me, and saved me READ V 4-20 - worship battle When I call I’m saved from my enemies- surrounded by death Floods of ungodliness Sorrows of Hell and snares of death HE HEARD ME- why? Because those things make him angry! And he did something about it and delivered me!When we see sin and it upsets us, it upsets God even more. He hates wickedness Psalm 11:5 The Lord tests the righteous, But the wicked and the one who loves violence His soul hates. When we are upset about ungodly behavior, God is even more upsetDavid Called out to God when he was in distress and God heard him. God saved him from it.Psalm 143:9  Deliver me, O Lord, from my enemies; [a]In You I take shelter.

There are only two words that come to mind when I think of Lily Christensen: girl power. Being the only woman dance leader in the Seattle salsa community has made Lily a go-to for dancers looking for a place where they can thrive and feel empowered. As a Latina business woman, Lily stands up to sexism, keeping her professionalism and voice on the forefront to carve out her own place on the dance floor. While her business is dance, a lot of her passion lies in the preservation and continuation of Latin Culture, which is why she focuses on Latin dance and Latin music. She uses storytelling, movement, and modern culture to keep her style fresh. Studio Azul is a place where you can build your confidence through dance, fitness, and community. This conversation is special to me because I spent 10 years competing, performing, and social dancing in the Seattle Salsa scene. It’s a place I always loved, but I definitely felt alone there. When Lily came to the scene, she opened up the inclusive space I wish I had known at the time I started. There are so many great topics in this episode, but here are a few of my favorites:-How Studio Azul builds a space to set people free and is an inclusive environment-The difference between being sexy and sexualized-How Instagram has fueled her advertising for free-The challenges of being a woman leader in a male-dominated industry-What to do when a workout isn’t for youThis episode is so empowering. If you want to find out more about Lily...Check out her Instagram @lilymarie19 or find her on her website. December is around the corner; Christmas trees are popping up everywhere. Everything gets a little bit more intense day after day.Planning, buying presents, cooking, decorating, eating and drinking.‘Tis the season to be…. busy busy busy!’If you like it this way: then great. But if a part of you is already tired about the frenzy and seasonal imperatives, I would like to invite you to do things differently this year… Instead of pushing and keep doing and over-doingI want you to give yourself a big dose of PERMISSIONPermission to relaxPermission to slow down Permission to simply be youThis is the most freeing thing to me...And you can do that in any given situation, but the holiday season sure is a perfect and much needed time to practice it!More than a way to cope with the stress and overwhelm of it, it is a perfect opportunity to connect to who you are at your core, to connect to how you are feeling underneath. And to go there we need first to give ourselves permission. Permission to feel through the body. Instead of focusing on pushing and «improving» oneself in order to be «good enough», we shift the focus on relaxation and release. In this week’s podcast episode, I am exploring the topic of giving ourselves permission. Here’s a sneak peek at what you’ll learn (in only 10 min):· How to cope with seasonal overwhelm and why you need to give yourself permission to relax daily· How to use this as an opportunity to meet yourself under the layers · How you bring your nervous system into a downward stress spiral (and how to stop it)· And bonus: a gentle Solar Plexus relaxation practice to help you connect to this important part of your body (#secondbrain)Click here to listen to today’s episode: However you are able today, make sure you take time for yourself and savor the incredible flavor of permission. Major bonus here: when you live and choose to gives yourself permission you invite others to give themselves some, too! :)Love,CamillePS: Stay tuned, next week I’ll tell you all about my visit to the Vagina Museum that just opened in London! New Zealander Neil Finn founded the indie rock band Crowded House with Austrailian drummer Paul Hester and Australian bassist Nick Seymour. For their third studio album Woodface, Neil's older brother and Split Enz alumnus Tim Finn would join the band. In fact, much of the material recorded for Woodface was originally intended for a Finn brothers album, and made it onto the this album after Capitol Records passed on many of the new songs that were originally intended for the album.Neil Finn has always been a strong singer-songwriter through many bands (including Crowded House), and is currently touring with Fleetwood Mac.Eric Von Haessler from WSB Radio and The Von Haessler Doctrine joins us again on What the Riff to cover this excellent and underrated album.Chocolate CakeThe opening track on the album was an album about the excesses of America and the West. “The excess of fat on your American bones will cushion the impact as you sink like a stone.” It's a bit of a novelty track with a “National Enquirer” feel. Its Only NaturalThis beautiful track reflects a long relationship. “It's only natural that I should want to be with you. It's only natural that you should feel the same way too.”Weather with YouThis track with an eastern-influenced sound and a vocal duet encourages the listener to not be affected by circumstances, but instead to “take the weather with you.”4 Seasons in One DayAnother “weather related title” brings the lyrics, “Even when you're feeling warm, the temperature can drop away like 4 seasons in one day.” There's a distinct Beatles inspiration from this track, and the lyrics are incredibly deep. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“7 and 7 is - Love” (from the movie, “Point Break”)The movie Point Break was a surfing-themed film, and this track reflects that surfer image.STAFF PICKS:"Saving My Heart" by YesWe say, “All roads lead to Yes,” and it is true for Bruce's staff pick. This song is from the album “Union,” which combines the current Yes members with former Yes members John Anderson, Bill Bruford, Rick Wakeman, and Steve Howe.“Walking in Memphis” by Marc CohnBrian's staff pick takes us 10 feet off of Beale. The song is somewhat autobiographical, describing Marc Cohn's experience on a trip to Memphis, Tennessee; where he met Muriel in The Hollywood Cafe, and attended a service by the Reverend Al Green.“Too High” by The Mighty Lemon DropsWayne brings us a deep and psychedelic cut from the Manchester scene that would eventually become popular with The Stone Roses and Oasis. This is off their fourth studio album “Sound...Goodbye to Your Standards.”“More Than Words” by ExtremeRob finishes our staff picks with this acoustic ballad from Gary Cherone and Extreme. This is the third single from their album “Pornograffitti.” The band would eventually come to resent the popularity of the song.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Kind of Bird” by The Allman Brothers BandAn instrumental jam with a Southern flair takes us out on this week's What the Riff.

One of the most famous of the British "mod" groups, Small Faces was founded by Steve Marriott, Ronnie Lane, Kenney Jones, and Jimmy Winston (although Winston had been replaced by Ian McLagan by this album). Small Faces was solidly in the psychedelic rock category. Small Faces toured with The Who, a group also known as a "mod" group. The name comes from the fact that all the members were under 5' 9". There Are But Four Small Faces was an international alternative to their eponymous second album released in 1967 in Britain.Talk to YouThis song was a more blues-oriented track than psychedelic. Here Come the NiceThis track is a more typical psychedelic song, and was surprisingly able to make it past the censors of the day, since it was a tribute to a drug dealer.Itchycoo ParkThis song is a tale of kids skipping school and drinking in a place they called Itchycoo Park. They really didn't intend to release this track, but it went to number 16 in the U.S. anyway. However, this song was banned by the censors in the UK.Tin SoldierMarriott wrote this more rock-oriented song, and took it with him when he went to Humble Pie. It was written for a model named Jenny Rylance, whom he would later marry. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Theme from Rowan & Martin's "Laugh-In" This edgy show premiered in January 1968STAFF PICKS:“Think” by Aretha FranklinBruce's staff pick is from the Queen of Soul, off her 13th studio album. This was the only song off the album that was written by Franklin.“Different Drum” by The Stone Poneys featuring Linda RonstadtRonstadt's vocals on this track make this style of performance the sound that would define this song, though it would be covered multiple times.“Judy in Disguise (with Glasses)” by John Fred and His Playboy BandBrian's staff pick was a parody of the Beatles' "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," a parody that John Lennon enjoyed. Brian knew John Fred during his childhood in Baton Rouge, so this is a staff pick with special meaning.“Bend Me, Shape Me” by American BreedThis horn-driven piece is another song that was recorded by a number of groups, but this is the best known version. American Breed would be a one-hit wonder, but would have success writing commercial jingles.INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:“Love is Blue” by Paul Mauriat and His OrchestraThis orchestral instrumental song was a top hit at the time.

Have rental properties and want to set up a company and an associated self-directed 401(k)? Good idea… but the IRS might stand in your way. I’m Bryan Ellis. I’ll tell you all about it RIGHT NOW in Episode #315 of Self-Directed Investor Talk---Hello, Self-Directed Investors, all across the fruited plane. Welcome to another action-packed, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride into the fantastic world of tax-free alternative asset investing. This is Self-Directed Investor Talk, the SHOW OF RECORD for savvy self-directed investors like you, and today we have an excellent show for youThis is Episode #315, so to get the transcript and other resources for today’s show, visit SDITalk.com/315, that’s SDITalk.com/315 for all of those resources, provided to you with our compliments. So…I regularly hear from rental property investors who want to use a self-directed 401(k). The idea is that they want to form a company connected to their rental properties since one must have a business in order to establish a self-directed 401(k). On the face of it, this isn’t a bad idea.My regular listeners will, of course, know that I am a huge proponent of self-directed 401(k)’s as being the absolute crème-de-la-crème of self-directed retirement accounts versus any type of IRA in Every Single Way……Except one.“Well Bryan, what is that one exception?” I can practically hear you asking right now? It is this:Far fewer people actually QUALIFY to set up a self-directed 401(k) in the first place. The qualifications aren’t complicated – really, all you have to have is a business that you own which has no full time employees other than you and maybe also your spouse, and your business has to have earned income. That’s really about the size of it.But therein, there’s a pretty big GOTCHYA for rental property owners who want a self-directed 401(k). What is it? Well, it’s that caveat of having EARNED INCOME.Earned income, as you may know, is the type of income that results whenever an employer gives you a paycheck or, if we’re talking about a business rather than a person, it’s the type of income that results whenever a business is paid for the purchase of a product or a service. It’s income that’s earned on the basis of active effort. You’ll note that that definition doesn’t directly apply to rental income. Rental income is, under the tax code, what’s known as UNEARNED income. Not unearned in the sense that you’re unworthy of receiving the income, but unearned in the sense that rent is payment for the use of an asset rather than for the purchase of a product or service. From a tax perspective, there’s no active effort involved in receiving rental income. So that’s a problem. If the only income you are receiving comes from rental income, then all you’re receiving is UNEARNED income rather than EARNED income. And it really doesn’t matter whether those rents are being paid to you personally or to a company you form to own the properties. Either way, the nature of the income itself is still UNEARNED.And if that’s the only kind of income you’re receiving, that’s not sufficient basis to establish a self-directed 401(k), I am sorry to say.But NEVER FEAR, my friends. As always, I have a solution, which Self-Directed Investor Society clients have been using quite productively for years now, and it is this:While RENTAL INCOME won’t qualify you to set up a self-directed 401(k), what COULD qualify you to do so is to establish a PROPERTY MANAGEMENT company which serves your rental properties. In other words, let’s imagine you have one or ten or a thousand rental properties… you could very realistically and legitimately establish a company that provides property management services to your rental properties, for which it receives payment, usually in the form of a percentage of rents collected. And in your quest to set up a self-directed 401(k), that will go along way. Because while RENTAL income is UNEARNED and doesn’t qualify you to establish a self-directed 401(k), PROPERTY MANAGEMENT income is distinctly of the EARNED variety… and thus is a legitimate qualifier for the “earned income” requirement to set up a self-directed 401(k).Capiche? The idea is simply to segment a small portion of your income and do something to convert it, in a legal and legitimate sense, to the form of income that will allow you to qualify to establish a self-directed 401(k).But even this solution has a rather serious drawback. Two of them, actually. Did your investing guru – who isn’t an expert in self-directed retirement accounts – mention these drawbacks to you? I didn’t think so. But I, your exceptionally well-informed, highly opinionated, always lovable and deadly accurate host won’t hold back the goods from you.But you’re going to have to listen in tomorrow to get THE GOODS because I’m out of time for today. And that reminds me… if you haven’t SUBSCRIBED to Self-Directed Investor Talk, please do that now so you get a notice when we publish new episodes! As I suspect you can tell, this isn’t information you can afford to miss, and it’s not information you’ll get anywhere else. And second… if you like this show… and hey… YOU KNOW YOU DO! Hehehehe. Seriously, if you like this show, please consider giving us a nice 5-star rating and review in Apple Podcasts… that really, really helps to get the word out and brings in more listeners, which motivates me to make this show better and better with each passing day. That’s all I’ve got for you today my friends, except for this one parting thought:Invest wisely today, and live well forever! On this episode, I'm joined by yoga teacher and holistic health coach Rosie Acosta. Rosie shares her personal story of growing up in East L.A. in the 90s where chaos and violence surrounded her daily. By the time she was a teen, she'd been arrested, she was physically unhealthy, and she didn't see much of a future for herself. And yet, here she is now, living a bright, fulfilled life. Her story is inspiring and speaks to the power of the human spirit and the power of a dedicated yoga practice. ✨ "The minute I walked into that [yoga] room, I felt like I was home." ✨Rosie shares:- How one of the biggest mistakes of her life as a teen was actually a catalyst for positive change- The internal conflict of wanting to create a better life for herself while knowing that he family feared losing her if she "got out"- How growing up with instability created a deep internal craving for stability- How she juggled several jobs and explored different paths before finding the right fit with yoga- Her advice for finding the right yoga teacher for youThis interview is a must-listen for anyone who has ever felt the odds are against them. Using botsI hate bots. Hate them. Yes they can help bring you followers, but most of the time the followers are empty and non-engaging.Pro tip: The best way to bring organic followers is to actually interact!Mistake 2. Not putting your location on your accountIf you are a local based business or honestly any business, make sure to put your location on your instagram.I run a local based business and I easily follow people who show that they are in the same location as me. If you don't list your city, you could be losing followers, even if you sell beyond your local market.Pro Tip: Make sure to have a business account and add your city in the settings, this way it doesn't take up space in your descriptionMistake 3. Not listing a website/linkAnother thing I see many times is that people put no link to their business or facebook page and have nothing there. If you have a blog or anything, make sure to putPro Tip: Use www.linktr.ee as your link. You can add a bunch of calls to action in one link!Mistake 4. Following more people than follow youThis is something I've heard from many people. Always follow less people than follow you. This comes off as more reputable and shows that you aren't desperate for followers.Pro Tip: What I do is make a separate private account for the beauty bloggers, fashion bloggers and celebrities I want to follow but won't add to my following list. This way I'm only following people in my industry and can actually keep up.Mistake 5. Not having a consistent looking feedInstagram can be your portfolio and first impression of your business. If it's full of family pics, shot in low light on an iPhone, you may be losing customers.By using the same consistent filters, and if you have graphics, using the same colors and fonts, you appear much more professional.Mistake 6. Not using instagram storiesBecause of instagram's algorithms changing, having an instagram story is so important because you are put on the top of everyone's feed and they won't miss your post/content. So double up!Pro tip: Create a iphone sized graphic in canva.com! I'll hopefully be posting a tutorial soon!Mistake 7. Not using HashtagsAlthough there have been many posts recently about shadow bans (google it!) I still believe hashtags are an amazing way to find other instagram accounts as well as for accounts to follow you!Download our free Hashtag GuideMistake 8. Not engaging with others or replying to commentsIf all you do on instagram is post pictures, you are really missing out! Instagram is a community and you need to treat it as such. Take some time, even if it's 5 minutes, each day, comment on posts, like pictures and respond to your commenters!Mistake 9. Not refollowing/engaging with accounts you want to follow you backOne thing I've found that isn't super spammy and although it takes some time actually works, is getting the app Followers and tracking who isn't following you back. Every month I scroll to the bottom of the list and unfollow and refollow a few people. Then I comment on those peoples post. This helps people know about me and they may have missed me following the first time.I wouldn't do this more than 2x so only do it for accounts you want to get the notice of.Mistake 10. Not being consistentPosting at least once a day is very important if you want to build a following. If you only post weekly, you are way less likely to build an audience quickly.Pro tip: plan out your feed with a planning appMistake 11. Not posting at the right timeTiming on instagram is super important. I usually post between 7am-9am or after 7pm. These are when the most people are online.Pro tip: check your instagram analytics to see when the most people are online!Mistake 12. Only using graphicsI usually don't follow accounts that only use graphics. It tends to look messy and none of them look alike. I prefer accounts that have photos and use clean graphics occasionally.Mistake 13. Not coming up with original contentUnless your account is strictly a curated account (mine is for the Twin Cities Collective, a community group) you need to put out original images if you want to grow your account. I have never featured an image that isn't mineMistake 14. Not having pretty picturesInstagram is truly a visual site. If your pictures are less than desirable, you may stall in terms of followers. One easy way to have pretty pictures is by using stock photos. Check out my stock shop for inexpensive photos you can use to make your instagram page look super professional!Mistake 15. Not selling your products/servicesOne recent thing I've realized is that many of my followers don't realize what I actually do! Don't be afraid to promote your services but don't have every single post be self-promo. Mix it up! For every 3 posts, 1 should promote something, even if it's another social media account

You don't just have a complete puzzle, you have to go piece by piece, right? But you have to start with one piece.Lesley Logan 00:28Hey you, how are ya? Welcome back to the Be It Till You See It Podcast. I am so excited. I think I say that every episode, and I'm gonna keep saying it. Because, first of all, this podcast is still very new for me. So it's freaking exciting that we get to do this and that you are joining us and I get to introduce you to some of my favorite people on this planet, including today's guest, Erica Hood, the founder of HoodFit. I cannot even wait for you to listen to this. So what I'm gonna say is, please check out all of her goodness in the show notes below. She has an incredible fitness company - it's dance cardio, it's so fun. I don't even like to dance, and I take her classes. And also check out on the Gram, you will love her and be inspired by her. She's one of the sweetest people, she just got a puppy. So I'm all about checking out her puppy pics. If you need a puppy fix, that's what you should do. Anyways, what I can't wait for you to hear in this podcast is really how she went from being someone who worked for other people to working for herself. And I think a lot of times we get scared about, how do we do that? And we probably wonder, how do you do that? And you're going to hear how she did it. And I think you're gonna hear a lot about a lot of something that feels familiar to you. So what I want you to do is make sure you're being present, listen to this. And then afterwards let me know how you liked it because Erica and I, we just really want you to hear this information, hear her story. You're gonna hear the interview right after this brief message.Welcome to the Be It Till You See It Podcast, where we talk about taking messy action, knowing that perfect is boring. I'm Lesley Logan, Pilates instructor and fitness business coach. I've trained thousands of people around the world. And the number one thing I see stopping people fromLesley Logan 02:15achieving anything is self doubt. My friends, action brings clarity. And it's the antidote to fear. Each week, my guest will bring bold, executable, intrinsic and targeted steps that you can use to put yourself first and Be It Till You See It. It's a practice, not a perfect. Let's get started.Lesley Logan 02:43Hello, everyone. I can't wait for our next guest just to start talking. She is one of my favorite women on this planet. And I have to say this: you're someone who I was so intimidated to meet. And when you all hear her voice and start getting to know her there's like nothing intimidating about her. But Erica has this like elegance and grace and just an ability and she's beautiful. And we both were, we both are ambassadors for this one fitness business Carbon38. And, you would just take pictures and be so beautiful. And they're like, okay, and they had to tell me how to pose everything like, Now put your shoulder here, do this. And then Erica, you come up and like, just do all the right things. And I'm like, This girl is so beautiful. And then you start talking and you're also so freakin nice. And so what I can't wait to chat about is the many adventures we've had together. And one of the reasons why I brought you on here. But first will you introduce yourself, tell everyone who you are?Erica Hood 03:42Thank you for that lovely introduction. You're so sweet. Hi, everyone. My name is Erica Hood. I'm the creator and founder of HoodFit, which is a women's based fitness company. We focus on moving to the rhythm connecting to our mind, body and soul by moving to the music and to the beat. You can expect to get in my classes, kind of that dance, Pilates Barre vibe throughout the class, you're going to sweat, move to feel good. It's just all about programming my workouts to deliver to women to connect to themselves on a deeper level. So like yes, the workouts are gonna be intense, and it's gonna be sweaty, but it's gonna have you feeling so good from the inside out - that energized movement where you just kind of allow yourself to tap into that place where you have that moment of freedom. And I think that's where I come from in that place. When you say oh, you would just jump up and do things is like, I would just move and open up and not think about things. I would just express myself through movement. So I love sharing that gift with people and that's kind of what HoodFit is all about that I built.Lesley Logan 04:54Yeah, I love that and it's so true because when I have taken Dance during your dance classes with you those cardio dance classes, once I get over the fact that like, I can't dance and I just try to keep up, it is so much fun and you catch yourself smiling and sweating. And I think that it's a permission that a lot of women have a hard time giving. So I really love that you are on a mission to do that. We both recently moved to the desert where queens have desert life now. We're making desert life look a little different. Um, and I remember it because you live in Palm Springs now. And I'm in Las Vegas, we moved about a month apart from LA. And it was a couple years ago that you and I were on a drive to Palm Springs together to go on a retreat, we had the top down on the Jeep, maybe this is three years...this is before I got rid of my car. And you had just launched your company. And you know, I want to talk about the story. Because I think it's really interesting. A lot of people think they have to know all the things that they...all the parts of what they want to do. But when we did that drive you didn't, I'm just gonna blow it. You didn't know anything about what HoodFit would be. You're just like, I'm like, I'm launching HoodFit! So can you share a little bit about like, what it felt like and what that was like, a couple years ago, when you didn't know all the parts?Erica Hood 06:22This, this really is one of my favorite things because now seeing how far we've come and like what we've built. Now I have moments where I reflect back, and I'll never forget the drive in the Jeep with you. Because I literally was like, I think I'm just gonna push live and we're gonna go live on the phone, right that like, I'm gonna launch my socials, everything's gonna be live like and out to the world. And I was asking you all these questions like, Well, wait, how do I do this? And you were telling me all these fundamental business things that you were implementing. And I was like, I don't even know how to do that. Well, what is that, and I'm and there was this moment that like rushed over me of like, I don't know what I'm doing. But you know, what I'm going to do and commit to is that I've worked my way up in all the years of experience that I've had in my fitness professional field, which was already, you know, eight plus years of working for other people and gaining that experience, you know, being the head trainer and other places, but it's different when you finally go off on your own. And when you're building something from the ground up. I think that you just have to take that leap of faith and just dive in again, without overthinking it. And you were the best person that could have been in the car with me at the moment. Because as much as I felt like there was that part of me going, she's talking all these things in these words and I don't know this fancy business lingo and like what she's saying. And then there was this part of me that says, I just have to do this. And then once I put it out there, I'm going to continue to like I'm not, you're never going to know anything right away. When you do something, you have to like, take that first jump. And then as you go, you start to put the pieces together because there's just an abundance of things for you to have to figure out and pieces to put to..it's like building a puzzle. You don't just like you don't just have a complete puzzle, you have to go piece by piece. Right? But you have to start with one piece.Lesley Logan 08:26Oh, absolutely. And you know, I think there's like a curse of too much knowledge and, and you had like gone live. And then we were talking about it. And I was like, Oh, thanks. So glad she posted before we started talking about all these things. Because if I think some people are like, no, I need to know all the information. I think of like, if you ever read the book by Gretchen Rubin, about four tendencies, like the questioners. They have to ask all the questions, and I feel for them because like, having all the information doesn't actually make it easier for you to like, take that first step. And in fact, puzzles like you brought up puzzles, those 1000 piece puzzles, I don't even buy them. Like you couldn't ever even get me...I'm like, that's, that's, I don't know. And I have the picture and the steps and you can do the frame really quickly. And I'm like, No, this is too much. I definitely love a messy action kind of taking. And so since then, you've been really working hard and growing this and you have a following and so many people, you know, right before COVID we were at this amazing event, where you had like rep your womanhood and I just I love how you bring women together and how you really encourage them. But I want to go back like pre HoodFit, pre you being a trainer. Tell us a little bit about like when you were growing up, how you kind of like maybe what there was signs of like you were destined to do this.Erica Hood 09:48Oh, well, I can think back to you know, it was like middle school days. Where I started off as a dancer at the age of three. And my mom, she tried to put me in sports. And she, you know, she was like, because I always asked her I'm like, Did I just always dance like, Did I not ever want to do? And she's like, I would try to enroll you in soccer and you would say, well, am I gonna wear a pink uniform? And my mom would say, Well, I can't promise you anything, you know? And I'd say, well, then I don't want to play. So I mean, I kind of always have this thing for wanting to wear fun things and move my body to the music. And I would rush home to catch...Do you remember that show TRL?Lesley Logan 10:34I do remember it. But my parents wouldn't buy cable so I could only watch it at my grandparents house.Erica Hood 10:41Oh, I tell you, I would rush home to watch TRL. I mean, this was when music videos were like the thing. And you would watch all of your favorite artists. I mean, Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, I would learn the dances, the back like I would like learn the dances on the thing and like be dancing around in the living room. And like my brothers...Lesley Logan 11:00This is before YouTube. Before you could even rewind and like do it again. You had to like learn it on the fly,Erica Hood 11:06Yes. You had to learn it on the fly. Or if you were lucky, you could get your VCR and record it. Like sometimes I would record an episode of TRL on the VCR. And I would play it back to learn the steps. And I was so...Like, I just love the performance aspect. I love seeing the artists, the music moved me and I was like I want to know those steps. And it was true. There wasn't a way to connect like we can on our phones to find something so quickly, and to pause and stop. And so I was learning the dances and I wanted to be that backup dancer so badly. I wanted to be that. I saw that. And I was so cool because it came so full circle for me, like many years later, after I had gone to college, and I got my dance degree and I focused on that. Then I moved to Los Angeles, and I pursued my dance career. As a dancer I got signed with an agent. And I actually got to perform in music videos. And it was just this like,Lesley Logan 12:05Oh, we have to go into which music videos. I mean, people are gonna wanna know.Erica Hood 12:11I mean, I did some random music videos. Like so, for an artist, she's not random, Luciana, she's kind of a techno, deep house kind of artist. And I did a ton of music videos for her like we were doing Pointe work where you're like in your pointe shoes on the wooden box on concrete for eight hours until my toes were bleeding. I mean, but I was like, as much as it was painful I was like in this state of bliss. Just being..like so amazed that like that little girl. That little girl that would dance in her living room was now dancing in the music videos with artists. That's another...Lesley Logan 12:56Like watching and like on their toes trying to be because you know that.. the music videos haven't stopped. They're still going. People are now watching TikTok videos.Erica Hood 13:09I can't imagine what it would be like if we had TikTok when we were little.Lesley Logan 13:13You know, um, your whole story made me think of...Did you ever watch the movie Girls Just Want to Have Fun? Yes. Oh, I mean, when they're like changing their clothes on the bus, and then they're like, going and like watching. I love that. I love everything about that movie.Erica Hood 13:31It's so good.Lesley Logan 13:33Yeah. So Erica, um, I think there's a lot of fear in taking that leap. And like, what if this doesn't work? So what did you have to tell yourself back when you, back when you launched and you really didn't know all the steps? And then even even recently, because now you've launched your app, and it's not like, you know, if you build it, they will come...that is not how it works, y'all, it doesn't work like that.Erica Hood 14:02No, no, I wish.Lesley Logan 14:05I wish. I mean, I wish. Remember, like, probably in the 90s when everything was new? People would develop something and everyone would come and get it. But now there's just so many things and so many distractions that you have to really like, like it's a risk every time you do something and it's a real one. And so the fear is real. Yes, but what isn't? What did you tell yourself every time you've taken a leap when you don't know how it's gonna turn out?Erica Hood 14:29Well, you know what, the fear is so real and I have to say like, I am one that kind of struggles with that because as much as I am free spirited and will go in when something feels right to me and like it. You know? I felt like when I was younger, and I didn't overthink things as much, I was more daring and I did...like fear wasn't a thing. Like as you gain more responsibilities when you're older. I feel like everything becomes more real and you're like, oh, if this doesn't go right like..That fear creeps in and then you feel super responsible for messing something up. But for me, I had to have a little bit of encouragement from my partner. So, Mr. Jordan Hood, my husband, just like the best, most supportive husband, ride or die best friend that I've ever had. I remember before we launched HoodFit, and like before I went with you on the trip in the jeep, like officially, like put everything up. So I love that. I just love that I did that in the car, like top down, I'm like, here we go. We're watching.Lesley Logan 15:37We had our very expensive lattes, and we were driving to Palm Springs letting the sun just really beat on our faces.Erica Hood 15:46We really baked. I was able to do that, because I had this encouragement from him. And I, you know, I have to talk things through. A lot of times I like to keep them inside and all it does is just mull around in my head. And then I go into this spiral where it's like negativity and fear. So I started telling Jordan all these things and it became this like, well, what if it doesn't succeed? And what if people don't like it? And what if nobody actually signs up? Or like, does my workouts or does my classes, and he stopped me. And he goes, you're already doing it. And I was like, What do you mean? He's like, you already have a client base, you're already doing sessions, you're already teaching people and you've been doing this for like, literally half your life when you started teaching dance at the age of 15. And like, you're just making it official and calling it your business. And like doing that. And he goes, and even if you fail, you have me, you have our familys' support. So like, nothing can really go wrong. It's not like you're gonna hit rock bottom, we're not gonna let you do that. Like, you have to take this and just try. And I'll be here right here with you through it all. And I'm like, okay, like I needed that pep talk. Because then I was able to let go of all those spiraling what ifs, and you know, fear in my head, I...Lesley Logan 17:21I love that you shared the story. I didn't know that you had this conversation with him. But I think it's really important. When we play things out in our head it..for most people, I am one of the most positive people anyone would ever meet. And if I told you the story that I tell myself, the things, you'd be like, you think that? And I think, yea I'm a human being. We're human beings. And especially, you said it. Like, the more responsibility you get, the more those fears can take hold, like, every time we take another leap and another level, the responsibility of what we could lose,if it doesn't go well. It's a bigger risk, right? And so your story reminded me of this time I was in this place. This is three years ago now. It's probably about when you were in my jeep. We were in Denver. And it was one of the first events that I've been to where I was brought in for the energy and the community and something I totally aligned with and I had 85 people in my class 85. Now, I had not..I've never taught 85 people at once, right? And in the front row are people who like, had been teaching as long if not longer than me. Right? And it wasn't like they're there to be like my front row like, no, like, they were there to support me, but like, my brain was like, Oh, my God, these people are so, they're like so known. They're so huge. And then next to them was a bunch of our friends from Carbon, who had never done Pilates before. So now I've got people who have no idea what they're doing. I've got people who know, way too much, and 85 people. And Brad was there. He was doing the filming. But he was there to help mic me up and I said, is this thing on? He goes no. And I said, I'm really nervous. And he's like, why? And he's like, how is this different than anything you're already doing? And I was like, Well, when you put it like that. It's, Yeah. But it's so funny, because if I hadn't said anything to him, I would have just been nervous. It would have in my head like, Oh my god, all this stuff. And it's like, hey, so important. I hope anyone listening...it's like, whatever you're afraid of whatever's going on in your head. You have to have someone, if it's not your partner, you need to find a friend. If you don't have a friend, well, tell me on Instagram and I'll help you find a friend like. Like that is something that I really love about like, even the communities I created. Like, I really want to make sure that there's a space where people know it's okay to say I'm afraid I can't do x. Like because then when you get it out, first of all, it takes a lot of its power away because nothing that we're creating...It's like, it's we're not afraid....We're not brain surgeons. Right? Like, the reality of it going wrong is like, you know, we're not saving the world or making a decision about other people's lives. Like it's really all coming from a good spot. So thank you for sharing the story. It's so, it took me back. And it's something I have to remind myself and I try to do it more often. I try to tell even my team like, Hey, I'm really worried that we're not doing x. And then they're like, Well, here's all the ways that we are. And sometimes you just, you are too close to something to actually see that what you're fearing isn't real. So yeah,Erica Hood 20:39I love that. I mean, I think, too, because I mean, I'm the same as you, I'm a super positive person. But that doesn't mean that I don't have the doubts, the fear, all of that, that goes into when you're stepping into your bigger and higher self. When you're evolving as a person there's always going to be those moments where you're having to change, and there's gonna be things that are emotionally going on inside you, it doesn't mean that you don't have your shit together, like you're still on top of your work. And you're still going to show up in the way that you know, to show up. But it doesn't mean that on the back end, that you're still having those feelings just like everyone else. So it's important for it to be talked about and shared more often.Lesley Logan 21:22I agree, I really agree. And I also think, like, the only way you can get to being the person that you like, maybe are thinking is enough, even though you already are enough, is to get out there and do it. Like you can't do it in your head. Like you can't become a better version of yourself just in your brain.Erica Hood 21:40No. You have to do the actions and you have to have good people around you.Lesley Logan 21:46Yeah, yeah. I mean, you know, I think we are lucky, we have husbands who are very, very supportive and very involved.Erica Hood 21:54Yeah, it's so true.Lesley Logan 21:58Um, what would you say? Do you have any advice or tips for people who maybe, maybe they're single, maybe they're alone? Maybe their family isn't..Super, like, my family wasn't super entrepreneurial. So I had to surround myself with entrepreneurs, because they're like, What are you? Why can't you just take time off? You just work for yourself. And it's like, I don't think you know what that means. So, like, do you have any tips or advice for people who maybe don't have a partner who can actually, like, calm the fears?Erica Hood 22:27Yeah, I would say, you know, try to start thinking about the circles of people that you're surrounding yourself with. And there was something...I'll bring up Lori Harder, because she had, she's such the most, I can't say, I almost can't even speak about her, because I think I just like... we went to her...Lesley Logan 22:50Oh, talk about that. That was so huge for us. Yeah,Erica Hood 22:53I was. Oh, my God. Oh,Lesley Logan 22:57That was okay. So this is probably when we really actually became friends. Because there was that modeling thing we were both at together where we talked. And then it was probably a month later, maybe a month and a half later that we were both, we won tickets to go to Lori Harder's bliss project. And oh, my god, that was, that was a whirlwind. And so you and I were there, we'd won the ticket, we got to do this event. And what, we'll have to go back and tell more about this. But I remember looking at you at the end of it going, Oh my god, we've already done this together. Like we've already been here before. And you and I had never hung out. So why I had this vision of us already being in that space in that room. And then you looked at me like and said I think you're gonna win another ticket. And I did! But anyways, that was a trip down memory lane. So explain to everyone how that helped you.Erica Hood 23:52Okay, so she does such a good job at putting things together and she's built businesses, she's come such a long way, from like, a place when you're talking about like, Oh, my family doesn't really understand it, or maybe support it, like she will openly talk about that with her upbringing, right? And like, my family supports me, but maybe they just don't quite understand, like this new space that I'm navigating and like, the business that I'm trying to build, you know, in a different way. So like kind of taking from stuff that I learned from her too, is she'll say, you have to think about the circles of people that you're surrounding yourself with, you get to choose that, like that's your choice. You know, if you're a shy person or not as an outgoing person, you may have to put yourself out there to open yourself up to meet people, you kind of have to step outside of your comfort zone to invest in yourself. If you want to really take it to that next level. And that can mean a lot of things when you invest in yourself. That can mean signing up for, you know, a weekend event like that, that we went to where you walk away with tools and encouragement, and you meet people there and you network, you know, it can be, you know, meeting people online, joining different communities like and groups on these social channels that, you know, there's there's so many out there, I mean, you can literally find someone that has a group that has an interest towards yours or something like...Lesley Logan 25:25And that's the thing. Imagine back in the 90s. If you and I were trying to do this back then there would be like, there was nothing. But now, it's just a symbol of like, you can look online and find other people that are doing something that you're interested in doing. And yes, it does mean like, saying, Hi, it's me, can I be your friend? But that's how we became friends. It's like being in this environment. I'm like, Oh, my God, look at all these women who are basically trying to do what we're doing. And, that's been like, if we hadn't done that, who knows? So it's like, that's it. I love that piece of advice. It's like, you can do a little research, you can find people but it's so true. Who we surround ourselves with really does make a massive difference and things and so if you don't have those people like naturally, because of the way you, the family you have, like you have to seek it out. So you can have those people around you to go to.Erica Hood 26:21Yeah, yeah. Okay,Lesley Logan 26:24So, before we go into some tips that I know people are going to love because they're so useful. Where can everyone follow you find you get to know more of you?Erica Hood 26:34So you can find me on Instagram, Erica, HoodFit. And then my company you'll see through there as well, at HoodFit. We have a YouTube channel that's accessible, we wanted to put workouts for people to do free at any time, you can find workouts there and on Instagram. And then we also have our app, which is just like an even deeper dive into connecting with our sweat-sisterhood community. And you can find that on our website, which is just at HoodFitLife.com.Lesley Logan 27:03Amazing. We will put all these in the show notes. So definitely, if you're out on a run, don't worry. I'm on it. Right. So I believe that Being It Till You See It is the way things actually get done. And the way we actually can have all that we want to have. And I think that you know Being It is like being bold, it's finding ways to be more executable, it's finding that intrinsic drive and you know, something is more targeted. So, do you have tips on how to be any of those things, or how to even just prioritize being it till you see it?Erica Hood 27:40I think you know, you have to get right with yourself. I think a lot of times we look externally for different things. And I love the whole be till you see it because to me, all I hear and see in that is action, taking actionable steps, like you're saying, be bold and be all these things. And that, to me is taking action. I think a lot of times, we can kind of like sit back, and maybe even like journaling and writing things down. Those are great things. It's so great to like manifest things, but to actually put into action to make those things a reality is what I feel like a lot of times people are sometimes missing. And you know, if I really kind of like gotta go back and deeper into that, I feel like it's it's knowing who you are, getting right with yourself, knowing what your what your mission is, what your values are, what your passion is, that drives you to then be able to open yourself up to take action to get to where you want to be. Like, I feel like it has to start in a deep rooted place.Lesley Logan 28:48Yea, I think I think that's so true. I think it gets um, you know, as you were saying that one thing that I don't know, that I knew on a conscious level, but subconsciously is like you to be it to use it. You have to be yourself and the place that you want to be, right? And so you have to like it. The only way to be yourself is to really take some time to get to know who you are. And like what that drive is. It's out there for you. And I think that it's easy to look externally at others to figure that out and really going inward and getting clear on that so that you can take that action. I love that so much. I love you so much. I'm so happy for you. Oh, I love that we are still like four hours away. And that we get to you to have another summer where we go okay, How hot is it where you live? I know. Erica Hood, you are amazing. You're my most favorite people on this planet. So thank you for taking time to share your journey and your wonderful wisdom with everyone listening, everyone. Relationships, jobs, social structures, anything built on shaky ground is destined to tumble down. It's happening to bring you back home to who you truly are so you can live a life in alignment with who you truly are. When you're in the thick of it, it can feel like a personal attack from the Universe. Have faith because the difficult times will be your defining moments. You will be reborn in the fire. You are being called to surrender. To stop trying to hold it all together. To loosen your grip. To let the crumbling occur. It may be difficult at first but in the end, the sooner you let go, the sooner rebirthing will occur. What are you trying to hold together? What are you doing your best to avoid? How are you trying to pretend everything is okay? You have what it takes to allow what is falling away to tumble and fall.Once the tower has crumbled you will be able to rebuild your home on solid ground with mighty foundations and a view that is so magnificent that it will take your breath away each new morn. Kali the goddess of destruction and the Black Madonna are with you now. Lay it all on their altar. They can hold it all.Leap: Life bends for the courageous. The Universe wants to support you, but first you need to leap. To throw your life up in the air. Perhaps you know what you are being called to leap toward or away from, but are scared to make the move. Or maybe perhaps you are waiting for a big fat sign or instruction manual, or permission to do so first. If this is you, then this card is your sign and permission slip to take a deep breath and leap into the unknown. It's scary to let go of all that we know in hope for something new. And it's normal to feel anxious at the thought of letting go of what we know for sure. But this is the unavoidable process of rising. And right now this is how you are being called to live.Birthing a new age: Often our path is exactly the one that we don't feel prepared to walk. Walk it anyway. Often what is rising feels far bigger than we could possibly hold. Be a container for it anyway. Often our creations seem to have wild uncontrollable consciousness of their own. Birth them anyway. Often what is ours to do is the very thing that most intimidates us. Be courageous and do it anyway. We are birthing a new age. It is time to give permission and space for what is beckoning within to be born. The Wisdom of Avalon Oracle Deck:Pulls: Protection + The MysteryThis show is produced by Soulfire Productions
