The WDW Radio Show - Your Walt Disney World Information Station
WDW Radio # 725 - Wayback Machine to Disney's Polynesian Resort - From the WDW Radio Archives On last night's WDW Radio LIVE show (WDWRadioLIVE.com), I brought you with me to and through Disney's Polynesian Resort for a walking tour at sunset of the grounds and Great Ceremonial House. We also looked at and discussed the construction of the new Disney Vacation Club Tower, and I remarked how the idea of a tower at this location was not something new, but was planned for from the very beginning, as early concepts for Disney's Polynesian Resort featured a 12-story tower before evolving into a more architecturally authentic “village” layout. So in the spirit of aloha and the origins of Disney's Polynesian Resort, I went back into the Archives this week to Show 111, where we boarded my Walt Disney World Wayback Machine and looked at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort through the years... at least up until 2009 when the episode first released. We turned back the clock to a time before Walt Disney World was even a vision in Walt's mind, and look at how his personal interests influenced what would become the model for themed resorts that would follow. We explored the Polynesian Village through the years and looked at some of its additions, changes and lost experiences. It's also interesting to hear how we discussed what the resort was like today (today being 2009), and then speculated as to what the future may hold... or should I say may have held. Were we right? Kris welcomes Joy Clore Willis, aka Mama Joy, Director of A Kids Gym in Oviedo, Florida. In between cruising around Alaska and spending time with her children and grandchildren, Joy is the busy mind behind A Kids Gym, where they incorporate activity and play as well as traditional physically-oriented services. Joy talks about the changes that came about when she joined Kris's community, and what she has done to grow her confidence and inspire her staff. Joy also talks about powerful marketing messages that have worked and finding structure during uncertain times. Key Takeaways: [10:57] Joy talks about opening A Kids Gym. She combined her background in PE and creative movement to open a special place where kids could come and feel welcome. She loves helping families see the many benefits that go just beyond the physical when kids enroll in the school. [14:52] Joy opened the gym for physical fitness and within a few months, she had a half-day preschool that ran gym, art, and storytime. That also outgrew itself in a short amount of time, and now they are at an enrollment of 120 kids, with 156 being the perfect number. [16:23] Fun Fact: Joy is not only a busy businesswoman, she is a mother and a grandmother! As she and her husband RV around Alaska, Joy talks about her past as a baton twirler. You may have even caught her twirling fire at the Polynesian Village at Disney World! [20:08] Joy shares some of the insights she has learned over the pandemic, and how she and her team rose up during some of the most difficult challenges. [24:57] How does Joy stay optimistic and keep her head on solid as a leader through the tough times? She credits her coaching with Kris and the community as a big help. Not only did she get the structures for success, but accountability buddies. [33:46] Start managing your company's core values, and share your why and purpose with staff. Hey guys, As you have noticed we have changed our schedule for the show. It will be posted on Monday's for now due COVID changing my work schedule. WE always make sure to get the show out to you as fast as possible. This show, we will be talking about the Don the Beachcomber's Pearl Diver cocktail. This cocktail was created by him when he opened his first location in California in 1930s. By the way, the address to that location is 1722 N. McCadden Place. It is now a dog park according to street view of Google. This location open December 5th, 1933 (anniversary coming up). WE are going to give you two recipes today from Don and.....Don!!! Yes, that is not a typo!! He created the Pearl Diver Punch in 1937 for his Don the Beachcomber's location. He created the Pearl Diver Cocktail in 1948 in Hawaii at the Polynesian Village bar or today known as Waikiki Village. Why two different brands? Listen to find out why!! This great cocktail has a Don's secret ingredient called Gardenia Mix. Thanks to Jeff "Beachbum" Berry we have the recipe now. Through his research, he found this unique ingredients recipe and I have to say its my first time using "butter" in a drink. Yes, Butter!! It has all kinds of elements such as honey, vanilla, cinnamon and pimento Dram. Around the Hub is a game show based on ESPN’s Around the Horn. Four contestants from around the WDWNT Network of Podcasts match wits in a game of competitive banter. Points are awarded for good arguments and points may be deducted if a podcaster loses their train of thought or says something the host does not agree with. There are 3 rounds of play, starting off with the Rope Drop (which covers the biggest news stories of the week from the entire Walt Disney Company) and ending with the Face-Off between the last two podcasters standing. At the end of each round the podcaster with the lowest point total is eliminated. The winner of each episode gets a thirty second Meet ‘N’ Greet to discuss anything from the World of Disney that is on their minds. Finally “The Hub” has returned to its intended format with a special FAN FRENZY episode. Join our panel of Disney fans, including Hub fans Kyle Duffield and Jeff Peterson as we discuss the following: Hard ticketed events at Disney World, the Polynesian Village, Hollywood Studios, new films coming to a theater near you, along with our usual exciting Disney duel of words. Joining the fans are Brandon Brush and Ben Harris. We also debut a new segment: “One Man’s Word”. You won’t want to miss this episode of classic Around the Hub!
