On the radio show this week, we dive into the attacks on Planned Parenthood and how the Republican budget could close 200 health centers and impact over a million people's access to reproductive health care. We hear about the unprecedented emergency happening right now to our democracy and how the SAVE Act could disenfranchise 69 million women voters and threaten fundamental voting rights. We cover the expanding wage gap for moms and the economic implications, and how Republican budget cuts could further harm economic opportunities for women and families. We discuss the devastating cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and more in the Big, Bad Betrayal Bill, exposing how the Republican budget could eliminate health care for 16 million Americans and potentially cause 51,000 deaths annually.   SPECIAL GUESTS: Alexis McGill Johnson, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, @PPFA, @ppfa.org; Celina Stewart, League of Women Voters, @LWV, @lwvus.bsky.social‬; Jocelyn Samuels, Former EEOC Commissioner, @JSamuelsEEOC; Alex Lawson, Social Security Works, @SSWorks, ‪@socialsecurityworks.org

Hey, friend. Hello, Change Makers. In the words of Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown—Hey, Black girl. We often say it takes a village, but let's be clear—villages don't build themselves. They're shaped, sustained, and often revived by Black mothers who know what it means to care, connect, and carry more than their share. Today's guest, Jetaun Woodley, didn't just recognize the gap—she built something from it. As a veteran communications strategist and Senior Director at Planned Parenthood, Jetaun has spent her career making sure messages that matter reach the right people. But it's her work outside the boardroom that's building legacy: creating H.U. Mommies, a thriving community of over 800 Hamptonian mothers who show up for one another, online and in real life. In this episode, we're unpacking how Black motherhood is often the foundation of community organizing, mutual care, and everyday advocacy. From navigating health care systems and education challenges to disaster relief and doula recommendations, these mothers are doing far more than sharing parenting tips—they're reshaping what support looks like. Jetaun joins Dr. Rikesha Fry Brown and me for a conversation that's both grounding and galvanizing. We talk about the power of peer support, the courage it takes to create a space when one doesn't exist, and what it looks like to protect and evolve a community you've built—especially when the work is personal. If you've ever questioned whether your care counts or whether creating something small could really matter, this conversation is your reminder: it already does. Listen now and be sure to grab the National Black Girl Month™ Toolkit for more ways to connect at nationalblackgirlmonth.com. To our Hampton fam—we see you. And if you're a mama looking for your people, you just might find them in H.U. Mommies. Connect with Jetaun Woodly on Instagram Jetaun Woodly is an award winning public relations and brand communications strategist with 20 years of experience. She has an unwavering passion and focus on working with individuals and companies to translate business goals and objectives into strategic communications plans and deliverables. Jetaun started her career as a public relations coordinator for Novartis Pharmaceuticals' philanthropy and community development division. She spent many years working in healthcare managing public relations for brands ranging from prescription drugs and FDA approvals, to eye care and over-the-counter products before moving to the nonprofit sector. Currently, Jetaun serves as Senior Director of Brand Strategy & Projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of America, a reproductive health care nonprofit organization. Prior to joining PPFA, Jetaun served as Director of Network Marketing & Communications for National Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem (CASA/GAL) Association for Children, a non-profit organization that supports and promotes court-appointed volunteer advocacy so every child who has experienced abuse or neglect can be safe, have a permanent home, and the opportunity to thrive. Following the birth of her son in 2015, Jetaun started HU Mommies Group - a support group for Hampton University alumnae. The goal of the group is to share advice, empower Black women, and provide a listening ear as Hamptonians embrace and embark on their motherhood journey. With more than 800 members, the group has planned a number of volunteer efforts across the country, vision board meetups, kid-friendly outings, tailgates at homecoming and a host of other activities. For example, when Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in 2017, Jetaun coordinated a group donation to local organizations that support mothers and children. In 2019, the group collectively donated to Hampton University's marching band, and sent care packages to current students. In an effort to provide unique learning experiences for the children of alumnae during the nationwide shelter-in-place (COVID19), Jetaun created virtual learning classes on a variety of subjects. Jetaun was featured on Essence Magazine Online for her work with the group. In 2020, Jetaun was admitted into Hampton University's Forty Under 40 Alumni Recognition Society. Jetaun served as a volunteer for the I Have a Dream Foundation - a mentor program in partnership with Ebenezer Baptist Church and St. Luke's Church in the heart of Atlanta. She is currently a board member of Atlanta Birth Center, a birth center dedicated to empowering families and providing compassionate, individualized birth experiences. A native of New Jersey, Jetaun received a Bachelor of Arts in Public Relations from Hampton University's Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications in 2004. While at Hampton, Jetaun was involved in Student Union Board and served as historian for the National Council of Negro Women. She also holds a Masters in Communication & Leadership from Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Jetaun resides in Metro Atlanta with her husband, Dr. Shaun Woodly (HU '04), and their two children - Brayden and Brooklynn.

The Midwest is a patchwork of different abortion laws—while some states like Michigan and Minnesota have protected access, others have completely banned care, like Indiana and Missouri. Garnet Henderson, Senior Multiplatform Reporter at Rewire News Group and host and producer of ACCESS: A Podcast About Abortion, sits down to talk with us about abortion access in the Midwest, including how it may be further impacted by recent funding changes to the National Abortion Federation and Planned Parenthood Federation of America.People residing in or near states that have banned abortion often travel to Illinois for care (although some may also travel to states like Nebraska, Minnesota, and Kansas), which was the state with the single largest increase in its abortion rate after Dobbs due to out-of-state travelers. These states are having to absorb skyrocketing rates of traveling patients on top of in-state patients seeking care. Iowa's abortion restrictions and abysmal access rates to OB/GYN care and maternity care has resulted in maternity care deserts across large swaths of the state, and a shocking 61% of hospitals in rural areas having no labor and delivery service. Simultaneously, the Justice Fund, a financial assistance fund for low-income patients which is shared between PPFA and NAF, has been reduced with less than a month's notice from 50% coverage per patient to 30%. This leaves patients with an even more shrunken lifeline to access.Support the Show.Follow Us on Social: Twitter: @rePROsFightBack Instagram: @reprosfbFacebook: rePROs Fight Back Email us: jennie@reprosfightback.comRate and Review on Apple PodcastThanks for listening & keep fighting back!

Margaret Sanger, the controversial founder of the PPFA  held the beliefs of Eugenics. A set of beliefs and practices that aim to improve the genetic quality of a human population also called scientific racism. The Eugenics movement later became associated with Nazi Germany and the Holocaust. The Eugenics Movement in the United States was more about preserving the position of the dominant groups in the population. The people that found themselves to be the targets of the eugenics movement were those who were seen as unfit for society- the poor, the disabled, the mentally ill, and specific communities of color and a disproportionate number of those who fell victim to eugenicists' sterilization initiatives were women who were identified as African American, Asian American, or Native American. With the landscape of abortion access changing almost daily in the United States, hundreds of thousands of people are not receiving the basic healthcare they need. Danika Severino Wynn, midwife and VP of Abortion Access with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, talks to us about the current state of abortion access in the U.S. and how different states and communities are disproportionately feeling the harm of restrictions and bans. It may come as no surprise, but in states where abortion bans are already in place, abortion care is extremely difficult to access. Many are having to piece together information about how and where to receive care before driving or flying out-of-state. At the same time, purposeful misinformation is pushed by anti-abortion advocates and politicians in order to shame and confuse patients. In states where abortion hasn't been banned, providers, clinics, and abortion funds are having to overextend their capacity to provide care and support for those traveling from out-of-state. This results in longer wait times for appointments, which is particularly troubling for time-sensitive abortion care.  Other sexual and reproductive healthcare is being impacted by these bans, as well. In states where abortion is severely restricted or banned, Planned Parenthood is still on-the-ground and providing a range of sexual and reproductive health care, including birth control prescriptions, cancer screenings, STI testing/screening, and more. In states where abortion is still legal and are seeing increased volume of patients, there are some increased wait times for services, but don't worry-- Planned Parenthood is still working diligently to ensure appointments are scheduled and kept.  LinksPlanned Parenthood Federation of America on TwitterPlanned Parenthood Federation of America on FacebookPlan CAbortionfinder.org Ineedana.com Repro Legal Helpline Repro Legal Defense Fund Digital Defense Fund Take ActionFollow Planned Parenthood Federation of America on Twitter and Facebook. Go to bansoff.org or text ACCESS to 22422 to learn more about how to fight back. There is power in storytelling. TaLeah Christine Harris was only 15 when she died. A vibrant young woman, she enjoyed art and fashion, but suffered from anxiety and depression. On April 30th, 1998, she gained access to an unsecured firearm — her father, law enforcement officer, Dennis Harris' duty weapon —and died of suicide.   In the years that followed, Dennis and the whole Harris family became committed advocates for suicide prevention and for safe storage. Now retired after 41 years in law enforcement, Dennis runs T-Lock, a company that produces smart gun locks with motion sensor alarms. In this episode, Dennis joins  hosts Kelly and JJ to share TaLeah's story, his experiences as an advocate, and his hopes that T-Lock (and products like it) will prevent other families from experiencing the suffering that he has.  Want to get involved?Urge your senators to expand and strengthen background checks.Urge senators to confirm a director to lead the ATF, the agency that oversees the gun industry yet has lacked leadership for years.Join a Brady chapter near you and sign up to attend our new volunteer session.Mentioned in this podcast:Retired lieutenant creates advanced gun lock after his daughter died by suicide (Fox)Firearm Access is a Risk Factor for Suicide (Harvard School of Public Health)How easy access to guns at home contributes to America's youth suicide problem (the Conversation) Locking up guns could reduce teen and childhood firearm deaths by a third (CNN)For more information on Brady, follow us on social media @Bradybuzz or visit our website at bradyunited.org.Full transcripts and bibliographies of this episode are available at bradyunited.org/podcast.National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255.In a crisis? Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been in the news again, this time as he sits in court for the first of three defamation damages cases against him. The cases have been brought by some families who lost children and loved ones in the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012. On December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, 26 people were killed including 20 students who were between six and seven years old, and 6 staff members. Within hours of that shooting, Jones had gone on-air and declared the shooting a hoax, a "false flag" meant to attack the Second Amendment, and more. These lies then led to survivors and victims families suffering additional trauma, from folks showing up at their home, to online harassment, to death threats. In this minisode, hosts Kelly and JJ break down why this case matters so much to gun violence prevention, and where we go from here with conspiracy theorists and misinformation. Want to get involved?Urge your senators to expand and strengthen background checks.Urge senators to confirm a director to lead the ATF, the agency that oversees the gun industry yet has lacked leadership for years.Join a Brady chapter near you and sign up to attend our new volunteer session.Mentioned in this podcast:Alex Jones concedes Sandy Hook attack was '100% real' (AP News)A jury tags Alex Jones with $45.2 million in punitive damages for 2 Sandy Hook parents (NPR)A Sandy Hook Mother Confronts Alex Jones (New York Times)Mom who confronted Alex Jones says he slipped her a note at trial (CNN)For more information on Brady, follow us on social media @Bradybuzz or visit our website at bradyunited.org.Full transcripts and bibliographies of this episode are available at bradyunited.org/podcast.National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-8255.Music provided by: David “Drumcrazie” CurbyVOTE for @bradybuzz's two proposed @SXSW panels on:

What Therapists Need to Know about Abortion and Termination for Medical Reasons: An Interview with Jane Armstrong Curt and Katie interview Jane Armstrong, LCSW, a clinical social worker in Texas, about terminating a wanted pregnancy for medical reasons. We look at the impacts of the overturn of Roe v Wade on reproductive care. We also dig into what termination for medical reasons (TFMR) is, how society stigmatizes these parents, and what therapists can do to effectively support clients facing this decision and the outcome of TFMR. Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! An Interview with Jane Armstrong, LCSW-S, PMH-C Jane is a termination for medical reasons (TFMR) mom, native Texan, & clinical social worker certified in perinatal mental health. Following the birth & death of her first child, Frankie, through TFMR, Jane opened Both/And Therapy, PLLC to provide individual therapy & support groups to other TFMR parents. These services aim to support clients through the unique barriers & grief of ending a wanted pregnancy, particularly in the state of Texas where such care is no longer accessible. She's passionate about building community, eliminating shame, & honoring grief for TFMR families.   In this podcast episode, we talk about Termination for Medical Reasons (TFMR) In the wake of Roe v. Wade being overturned, we reached out to Jane Armstrong, LCSW-S, PMH-C who specializes in TFMR and is based out of Texas, a state with some of the biggest barriers to this type of medical, reproductive care. What are the clinical impacts on individuals who are considering or who have had an abortion? Trauma related to pregnancy as well as abortion The differences between ending wanted and unwanted pregnancies The shame – societal and internalized What therapists can get wrong when interacting with the topic of abortion Unexamined bias related to abortion TFMR – is baby loss and TFMR parents are entitled to grief Disenfranchised grief and traumatic loss The impact of anti-abortion legislation on patients considering abortion and TFMR Lack of access to all types of medical care Logistics related to getting access to medical care The emotional impact of continuing to carry a pregnancy when it is known that the baby will die How late parents can find out about medical concerns that mean that TFMR is indicated The lack of time to make a decision What is Termination For Medical Reasons (TFMR)? “These are things [a health issue with the pregnant person or with the baby leading to TFMR] that may be fatal, it may not be. A lot of them you may not know, but you do know that there is the potential for tremendous suffering.” – Jane Armstrong, LCSW Terminating a pregnancy due to health issues with the pregnant person or with the baby For the pregnant person: fatal Hyperemesis Gravidarum, requirement for treatment, mental health conditions For the baby: 12 week genetic screenings or subsequent testing, scans, etc. can point out chromosomal abnormalities, neural tube deficits “In my own experience, we did do an amniocentesis, but we knew that we likely wouldn't get the results until after my pregnancy had ended, because it would be typically about two weeks, which would have pushed us over the limit in our state. So, there is a very loudly ticking clock over most of these parents on what should be – and is – the most important decision they've ever made. And it leaves very little room for compassion for the time these parents need to research and get second opinions and really understand what this diagnosis means.” – Jane Armstrong, LCSW How can therapists work with TFMR clients? The conflict between the laws and a clinician's own ethics Make sure your clients know you will be a support resource to them The importance of the client being able to tell their story Recognizing that TFMR is typically not talked about and opening space for these clients Trauma, grief, loss – sitting with the client with their hard stuff Helping clients to make this impossible decision Affirming parenthood and the challenge of the decision Decision versus “choice” and the ways in which bias can enter the conversation about decision-making Our Generous Sponsors for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. Any person who believes in and values a person's inherent right to control their own bodies, their lives, and their futures recognizes this decision for what it is: a disgrace to our society, to our health care system, and most importantly, to patients. This decision robs our right to control our bodies and personal health care decisions, giving it to lawmakers and leaving millions without access to safe, legal abortion. Overturning Roe means dozens of states could swiftly move to ban abortion — including 13 states with laws that will go into effect immediately or shortly thereafter. That's half the country where people may no longer have power over their own bodies and their own lives.  We know the harm that will come from this decision because we've seen it play out in Texas: People who do not have access to the financial resources and support they need to travel out of state are forced to carry pregnancies against their will, and some will seek abortion outside of the health care system. Where you live should not determine your ability to control your reproductive future. There's no one way that a person feels emotionally before, during, or after having an abortion — their feelings are unique to them. But we know that being denied an abortion can cause physical harm. And we also know that being forced to continue an unintended pregnancy can cause financial, mental, and emotional harm. People from Black, Latino, Indigenous, LGBTQ+, and other communities historically targeted by racism, bias, and discrimination will disproportionately feel the effects of abortion bans and restrictions. This might feel like a scary and confusing time. But while we are devastated, we are not deterred. Abortion is health care, and as the nation's leading provider of sexual and reproductive health care for all, Planned Parenthood is committed to meeting the health care needs of as many people as possible.  This is a crisis moment for abortion access. Organizers, advocates, providers, and patients need supporters and fellow providers across broad disciplines to channel outrage into action and send a clear message: We won't back down. In the 2022 state legislative session, over 500 abortion restrictions were introduced, with many extreme and restrictive anti-abortion bills passing. Rachel Sussman, Vice President of State Policy and Advocacy at Planned Parenthood Action Fund, talks to us about what the recent Supreme Court leak that threatens Roe v. Wade means for multiple states in the South and Midwest United States. Many states have gotten a head start on introducing harmful anti-abortion legislation. In fact, Oklahoma and Idaho have enacted copycats of Texas's S.8.—a bill that bans abortion after only six weeks of pregnancy and allows for private citizens to enforce the law against each other through legal action. Oklahoma's law is officially in effect (PPFA has asked for a stay on the law and is waiting on the decision), while the Idaho law has been stopped at the state court level. Florida, Kentucky, and Arizona have all enacted 15-week abortion bans which will go into effect with the upholding of the case at the center of Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. In addition, Louisiana is contemplating a law that would allow patients to be charged with homicide (which comes with the death penalty in the state) if they receive an abortion. The bill could also criminalize emergency contraception, invitro fertilization, and birth control. (Since we recorded Louisiana lawmakers have taken a step back from this bill for now.)  There are 26 states that are positioned to ban abortion with the overturning of Roe v. Wade, mostly throughout the Midwest and the South. This will leave entire regions of the country geographically stranded when it comes to access to abortion care. Abortion providers, clinics, and funds in states that will continue to provide abortion care will undoubtedly experience extreme logistical and structural challenges while attempting to absorb the patients traveling from out-of-state. Still, there are several states that are working to support and protect abortion in direct opposition to the Supreme Court's leaked decision. New Jersey, Maryland, Washington, and Connecticut have all voted to expand the type of medical practitioners who can provide abortions (such as nurse practitioners). Meanwhile, Oregon, California, and Connecticut are discussing usage of state dollars to directly support patients in accessing care. LinksPPFA on TwitterPPFA on FacebookBansoff.orgKeepourclinics.orgNational Network of Abortion FundsTake ActionFind advocacy opportunities at bansoff.org and follow PPFA on Twitter and Facebook. If you are in a state that is hostile to abortion, find groups that are actively protesting and join. In place of listening to me bore you for a half hour, why don't you go listen to a couple guys having fun interviewing a third guy who doesn't really know how to. In the episode, we talk about my book "Who Made the West"; why I write; why I write footnotes; what I think of the state of politics; what I hope to accomplish when I teach; how I try to efficiently balance family, work, and PPFA; and more. Please give it a listen, and have a great holiday weekend.

How the Parties Switched, Parts I-III

In this first part of a three-part series, Presidential Politics for America provides, as usual, an agonizing amount of context for its chosen topic. Before explaining how the Republican and Democratic parties switched ideologies, PPFA first does the following: defines the term "liberal" and conservative (4:00); provides a brief history of political parties (13:00); and analyzes political patterns of colonial America (18:00). And that's just this episode! These three parts set up the next episode, which will look at how our first political parties evolved into the Republicans and Democrats. Please rate and share this podcast to better ensure I finish this long, ambitious, and surely ill-advised series.

In the Public Interest welcomes Partner Kim Parker, who speaks with Helene Krasnoff, the Vice President of Public Policy Litigation & Law at Planned Parenthood, and Dr. Amna Dermish from Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas. Planned Parenthood is a nonprofit organization that provides reproductive healthcare services in the United States and around the world. The organization has also been a key player in challenging laws that restrict abortion rights and access in the United States. Their discussion focuses on two recent US Supreme Court cases with major implications for reproductive rights: Whole Woman's Health v. Jackson, a case that challenges a Texas law that bans abortion once cardiac activity is detectable in the pregnancy, typically at 6 weeks, and Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, a case that involves a Mississippi law that bans abortions after 15 weeks, with Mississippi also asking the Court to overturn longstanding precedents like Roe vs. Wade, which would then potentially allow states to ban all abortions. https://www.wilmerhale.com/en/people/kimberly-parker (Parker) is the vice chair of WilmerHale's Litigation/Controversy Department and co-chair of the firm's Pro Bono and Community Service Committee. Parker has represented Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health providers in numerous legal challenges over the past 20 years. In the Jackson Women's Health Organization case, Parker and a team of WilmerHale lawyers helped several leading medical organizations file a brief in support of Jackson Women's Health, arguing that access to abortion is a critical part of reproductive healthcare. At Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), Krasnoff leads a team of attorneys who challenge attempts to restrict access to reproductive health care, advise Planned Parenthood affiliates around the country about the legal issues raised by such attempts, and assist with PPFA's efforts to influence state and federal legislation in order to improve access to reproductive health services. She has been with PPFA since 2000 and has been in a lead counsel, co-counsel, or supervisory position in dozens of challenges at every level of the state and federal courts to laws and policies that limit the availability of reproductive health care services. She has also worked with members and staff on Capitol Hill on many pieces of legislation, including the Affordable Care Act. Dr. Dermish is a board certified OB/GYN with fellowship training in Complex Family Planning. She received her medical degree from the University of Colorado, followed by residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia and fellowship training at the University of Utah, where she also completed a master's degree in Clinical Investigation. Dr. Dermish is currently the Regional Medical Director for Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas where she also provides abortion care and oversees their transgender healthcare services, including gender affirming hormone therapy. Her clinical and research interests are in addressing barriers to accessing reproductive and sexual healthcare.
