The Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC) is collaborating with Polish and Japanese researchers from the Warsaw University of Technology and Okayama University to develop an innovative technology called DISSIMILAR that uses artificial intelligence and data concealment techniques to help users tell whether a video is real or a deepfake. Social media nowadays is rife with the spread of fake news and misinformation, one of the most insidious forms of this being deepfakes. Deepfakes are videos which are edited in such a way, often with AI technology, to combine images, video footage, and audio to create a false or misleading videos. The DISSIMILAR project works to combat this. Professor David Megías, KISON's lead researcher and director of the IN3, said: “The project has two objectives: firstly, to provide content creators with tools to watermark their creations, thus making any modification easily detectable; and secondly, to offer social media users tools based on latest-generation signal processing and machine learning methods to detect fake digital content.” Currently there are two types of tools used to detect fake news – automatic, based on machine learning, and much more commonly, platforms using human moderators. Social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter use human moderators and fact-checkers to tell whether content is real or fake, but that calls into question the danger of biases. This human solution could be affected by “different biases” and encourage censorship, according to David Megías, who said: “We believe that an objective assessment based on technological tools might be a better option, provided that users have the last word on deciding, on the basis of a pre-evaluation, whether they can trust certain content or not”. “That's why we've opted to explore the concealment of information (watermarks), digital content forensics analysis techniques (to a great extent based on signal processing) and, it goes without saying, machine learning”, he continued. Professor Megías explained that the fake news detection needed to be carried out with a combination of multiple different tools, both machine and human. The use of digital watermarking can be used to verify a media file “easily and automatically”. For example by confirming it had been distributed by a legitimate news industry or whether it had been posted from a brand new Twitter account. This too makes it so the user can easily tell if the content is fake. DISSIMILAR will combine the development of digital watermarks with digital forensics to detect irregularities and distortions produced when modifying a file, using machine learning models to improve outcomes. First-stage test studies are to take place in Catalonia, Poland, and Japan, with the researchers taking a holistic view on the perceptions and cultural components around spotting fake news. Professor Megías said: “Firstly, we want to find out how users interact with the news, what interests them, what media they consume, depending upon their interests, what they use as their basis to identify certain content as fake news and what they are prepared to do to check its truthfulness. If we can identify these things, it will make it easier for the technological tools we design to help prevent the propagation of fake news”. The perceptions will be gauged in different cultural contexts, splitting the user groups between Catalonia, Poland, and Japan. Andrea Rosales, a CNSC researcher, said:”This is important because, for example, each country has governments and/or public authorities with greater or lesser degrees of credibility”. “This has an impact on how news is followed and support for fake news: if I don't believe in the word of the authorities, why should I pay any attention to the news coming from these sources? This could be seen during the COVID-19 crisis: in countries in which there was less trust in the public authorities, there was less respect for suggestions and rules on the handling of the pand...

The average person needs 7-8 hours of sleep per night. The easiest way to improve your sleep is to focus on sleep hygiene. Sleep hygiene is a set of behavioral and environmental recommendations intended to promote healthy sleep, and was originally developed for use in the treatment of mild to moderate insomnia, but is now used for all populations who have trouble sleeping. Because sleep hygiene is an inexpensive lifestyle intervention, it serves as a first-line intervention for people who want to improve their sleep but are not likely to qualify for, or seek, more substantial clinical treatment. Reduce Caffeine Intake Blood levels of caffeine peak approximately 30 minutes after oral administration, and the half-life of a single dose of caffeine is 3-7 hours, though this is influenced by individual differences in sensitivity, metabolism, and accumulation. Interestingly, studies have found that large doses of caffeine close to bedtime have an acute disruptive effect on human sleep, but the effects of lower doses of caffeine are smaller in magnitude and less consistent. The long-term effects of caffeine abstinence in habitual caffeine consumers are not yet known, but the limited evidence to date suggests caffeine abstinence may be more beneficial for light or intermittent caffeine users than for habitual users. If you find that you have difficulty sleeping, caffeine is something to stay away from in the afternoon Refrain from alcohol intake Alcohol consumption near bedtime is associated with decreased sleep onset latency and increased slow wave sleep during the first part of the night. You might think this is beneficial and some people use alcohol as a way to fall asleep. I finally hit a plate on bench and can get it for a solid 2-3 reps but have been stuck at that for a couple months. I try to do lower weight higher rep as well and just can't get stronger. I also get a pain in my collar bone during the movement. Any tips? 19:05 - Can you go over meal timing and how you do it with a busy schedule? 25:55 - What intensification techniques are your favorite to include in a program? 30:40  - I've been videoing myself to check on form and it looks like coming up from the hole I seem to fall forward a little and as I come up I go back into place. I've tried to lighten the load and continue videoing myself with my feet pointing forward, shoulder width apart and trying to make it more quad dominant as before I would have used more of a hinge when squatting! I've tried to elevate my heels slightly and it seems to make the forward lean at the bottom of the movement worse! I've also tried pause squats but I just get fatigued quickly there. I'm also not a fan of front squats just because I can't seem to keep the bar up and chest upright to stop it tipping and my lower back hurting. People meditate for different reasons. We're going to focus on using meditation to reduce psychological stress and stress-related health problems. There are a few types of meditation: Breathing meditation: A practice where you focus your attention on the sensations of breathing. Body scan: A practice where you focus on each individual body part in turn, from head to toe. Loving-kindness meditation: A practice designed to foster positive feelings of love and care, initially toward a close loved one and then extended to yourself, others, and eventually the whole world. Observing-thought meditation: A practice that teaches you to notice as thoughts arise, label them—for instance, as positive or negative, focused on yourself or others—but avoid getting absorbed in them A recent systematic review and meta-analysis sought to determine the efficacy of meditation programs in improving stress-related outcomes (anxiety, depression, stress/distress, positive mood, mental health–related quality of life, attention, substance use, eating habits, sleep, pain, and weight) in diverse adult clinical populations. 47 trials were included with 3515 participants. The review found that meditation programs can reduce the negative dimensions of psychological stress.   The holidays are a busy time for people. From normal stressors such as working long hours to fighting traffic, caring for aging parents and paying the bills, just when you think your life is stressful enough, the holidays arrive, adding an additional layer of stress to our already busy lives. Indeed, people in the United States are more likely to feel their stress increases rather than decreases during the holidays. The holidays can be a hectic time for many, and a lack of money, a lack of time, and the hype and commercialism of the season causes increased stress for people in this country. Holiday humbugs keep working straight through the holiday. They cram work around meals and family time. Don't be a humbug. Couch potatoes send their last work email before the holidays, they flip the off switch and completely disengage. You need meaningful social interaction, physical activity, and active contemplation, among other things. Workaholidayic takes their workaholic tendencies and simply applies them to a different context. Rather than rushing from one work meeting to next, they rush from one holiday party to the next. Your new holiday to-do list: Goals around how much you want to sleep, how much you want to exercise, how much you'll allow yourself to do “real work,” among other categories of importance to you. Take time to clear your mental inbox. Set goals for the next year and spend more time planning how to achieve your goals than you do setting your goals. Today's episode dives into what science says about one of the most common training questions we get as coaches… How long should you rest between sets? Generally speaking, short rest periods reduce the amount of reps you can do in subsequent sets. Longer rests 3 are better for developing strength and when you're training at high intensities to failure. For hypertrophy, you are free to choose your rest interval. You can choose shorter rests, but you have to account for things like:  Study 1: Shorter rest intervals resulted in greater reductions in the number of repetitions completed and higher RPE scores for all exercises -  Senna et al., 2011 - compared 1, 3, and 5 minute rest intervals and found that shorter rest intervals reduced total # of reps. Study 2: A meta-analysis - Grgic 2017 - found that rest intervals > 60 seconds resulted in almost double the hypertrophy of < 60 seconds. However, there weren't a lot of studies so we have to take that with a grain of salt. Study 3: Short rest intervals might work better for single joint exercises. - Fink 2016 - found that shorter rest intervals in untrained people caused double the hypertrophy. 684 - What's Better, Full or Partial Range of Motion? (Research Review With Dr. Brandon Roberts)

How should we be training, to optimize results? Specifically hypertrophy (muscle growth) results? Should we ALWAYS use a full range of motion? Or can we use partial ranges as well, in some context? The answer goes both ways, but definitely leans heavily on the full ROM side of things - which is what we dive into today; a study on full vs. partial ROM. Example 1 + Study: if increasing the ROM causes a deloading of the muscle then using a shorter ROM may be more beneficial. Skullcrushers (supine lying tricep extension) - Goto et al., 2019 found that partial ROM caused about 20% more hypertrophy in the triceps. Example 2 + Study:  if increasing the ROM results in more loading in the stretched position. Leg extensions - McMahon 2014 - full ROM resulted in 22% more hypertrophy compared to half ROM. Biceps curls - Pinto 2012 - full ROM resulted in ~5% more hypertrophy than partial ROM. Meta-analysis:  A recent meta-analysis from Pallares et al. that examined 16 published studies reported that “full range of motion” resistance training over multiple weeks tended to result in more muscle growth and strength improvement in the lower limbs compared to partial range of motion training. Muscle Strength: People tend to gain the most strength in the range of motion they consistently train in which is underpinned by the principle of training specificity. Summary: At present, the consensus of the research that has compared muscle growth outcomes between training at long muscle lengths versus short muscle lengths indicates training at long muscle lengths is superior for hypertrophy. When in doubt, use full ROM. If decreasing the ROM means you end up missing out on loading while the muscle is stretched, then you're going to impair your gains.  But if decreasing the ROM means keeping the muscle in more constant tension and not having it unloaded for parts of the ROM, then you may improve your gains. Other Discussion points: Is it better to train in a ROM that is appropriate for your joints rather than try to force ROM too much, and end up having to take significant time off due to injury? This is a common myth that we're going to completely rip apart, today! Listen in on this research review to better understand the role of insulin, what actually causes obesity, and why you can't blindly take advice in the fitness and nutrition industry. Background: The carbohydrate insulin model (CIM) states that  increasing fat deposition in the body—resulting from the hormonal responses to a high-glycemic-load diet—drives positive energy balance. Said differently, Diets with a high proportion of carbohydrate elevate insulin secretion and thereby suppress the release of fatty acids from adipose tissue into the circulation and direct circulating fat toward adipose storage and away from oxidation. This altered fuel availability is theorized to lead to a state of cellular ‘internal starvation' leading to adaptive decreases in energy expenditure and increased hunger.  Concept: High glycemic load (GL) foods (e.g., high carbs) raise insulin, suppress glucagon, and elicit glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) response. This cascade drives glucose into muscle/liver/fat cells for about an hour. At about 3 hours post-meal glucose rapidly decreases to (theoretically) lower than pre-meal state which tells the brain “I need food” and induces a hormone response increasing the drive to eat(ghrelin, etc). The carbohydrate-insulin model suggests that endocrine dysregulation of adipose tissue is the primary driver of positive energy balance. Overlap: Both theories suggest that changes in food quality drive weight gain. However, according to the CIM, hormonal and metabolic responses to the source of dietary calories, not merely calorie content, lie upstream in the mechanistic pathway. In the Energy Balance Model (EBM) all calories are metabolically equivalent. Everyone tends to believe that your metabolism slows down as you age and therefore stops you from being able to get leaner or lose weight… So, is this actually true? Does research truly support this? Yes, it does - but only on the extreme ends (young/old). And today, we dive into this question and a recent study that comes from the Pontzer study in Science - listen in for details and read below for more information on the specific study we're reviewing. Study Design: Data was taken from the IAEA Doubly Labelled Water Database in April of 2020. At this time the database had 6,742 measurements of TDEE, fat free mass, fat mass, sex, and age. The authors investigated the effects of age, body composition, and sex on TDEE and its components, using a large (n = 6,421; 64% female), geographically and economical diverse (29 countries) database of doubly labelled water measurements for subjects up to 95 years old, calculating total expenditure from isotopic measurements using a single equation. Analysis: The authors used segmented regression after their initial analysis, which identified four distinct phases over the life span: neonates (0-1y), juveniles (1-20y), adults (20-60y), and older adults (60-95y). Application: Total expenditure rises in childhood, is stable through adulthood (20-60y), and declines in older adults. This study provides very good evidence that fat free mass accounts for a very large portion of our TDEE (83%). Yet, this has been known for quite some time, so it isn't anything new. However, the novel aspect of the study—and the reason it's in the journal Science—is that this is the first study to demonstrate that metabolism declines after age ~60, independent of fat free mass. This study provides evidence that the reason people gain weight is not due to their metabolism “slowing down” as you may commonly hear. Limitations: this was a cross sectional study so to really know we would have to track people across their lifespan rather than use a cross-sectional approach. Overtraining is a major issue for athletes who participate competitively in any sport. It has found its way into recreational fitness as well with the rise of competitive class models for fitness. Overtraining can lead to various different health complications and it can play a major role on your ability to perform everywhere from the workplace to the bedroom. “Most people don't know what it feels like to feel good when they wake up in the morning!” Jason said on this episode. Jason Phillips owns IN3, a nutrition coaching service that manages for the practical application of nutrition knowledge for its clients. In this episode Jason and I speak about how to know if you are overtraining and what you can do with your diet to combat some of the negative issues associated with it.
