We skip the usual format to hear from Ivor about how the club was formed, the team names which were discussed, the trials on Wimbledon Common and the pitch invasion after the very first match versus Sutton! We also hear about the play off final against Luton, a result which got the club into the Football League. As you may know Wimbledon's ground suffered significant damage following flooding earlier in the week. In 1992, Rachel Nickell was out for a walk with her dog and 2 year old son on Wimbledon Common in London, when a man came out of the blue and stabbed her to death. She was found with her son by her side, holding her hand. What followed was a shambles of an investigation by the Met Police, in which they decided to focus all their efforts on one (innocent) man, as the true perpetrator went on to kill others.

In this episode of the Data Malarkey podcast, data storyteller Sam Knowles meets Professor Angela Gallop, CBE, the forensic scientists' forensic scientist. Over the past four decades, the teams she's led have solved some of the most complex, difficult, and intransigent cold cases in British criminal history: Rachel Nickell on Wimbledon Common, Roberto Calvi under Blackfriars Bridge, and Damilola Taylor in Peckham. And perhaps most notoriously of all, Stephen Lawrence, stabbed by a gang of racist thugs on the streets of Eltham.   The details of how Angela and her teams cracked these cases – often bringing pioneering new techniques into play – are recorded in (ahem!) forensic detail in all manner of media. They're in Angela's 2019 book When the Dogs Don't Bark, her 2022 book How to Solve a Crime, and in any number of TV documentaries and specials. Most recently, this included the three-part ITV1 series, Cold Case Forensics, in February of this year. Not to mention Angela's appearance on the legend that is BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs last November. Links below.   Our conversation was recorded remotely, via the medium of Riverside.fm, on Friday 15 September 2023.   Thanks to Joe Hickey for production support.   Podcast artwork by Shatter Media.   Voice over by Samantha Boffin.   Angela tells us how her interest in solving crime was perhaps first kindled by the lurid stories in the now-defunct British tabloid Sunday newspaper, The News of the World, and her love of science was enflamed by an inspirational, sixth-form biology teacher at school “just in the nick of time”. This passion for working things out combined with an intense sense of natural justice saw forensic science take over her life after she joined the Home Office Forensic Science Service in 1974.   As her skills developed and as she founded and scaled some of the country's first and most successful private forensic science businesses, Angela became an international expert in blood and other bodily fluids – who they could and couldn't have come from, and the patterns they make and leave behind at crime scenes.   Forensics cover so many different areas in “offences against the person” – bodily fluids, of course, but also weapons, clothing – textiles, fibres, and fragments – toxicology, drugs, footwear, documents, and firearms. Increasingly, criminals leave digital traces of their activity, but the biggest single development in Angela's long and stellar career has been the rise to prominence of DNA evidence.   In perhaps the most memorable, moving, and intricate part of our discussion, Angela details how – after repeated examination and failures to identify the killers – she and her team unpicked the evidence that led to prosecution in the Stephen Lawrence case.   Angela also maintains that real forensics is much more subtle, time-consuming, interesting, and collegiate than the CSI TV drama series are ever able to portray.   EXTERNAL LINKS Angela's books https://www.waterstones.com/author/professor-angela-gallop/4009171   A ‘Long Read' on Angela's career, from The Guardian https://www.theguardian.com/science/2022/mar/24/queen-of-crime-solving-angela-gallop-forensic-science   Angela on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs from 4 November 2022 https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001dmpl   2023 ITV1 series Cold Case Forensics covering how Angela and her team cracked the Rachel Nickell, Lynette White, and Stephen Lawrence cases https://www.itv.com/watch/cold-case-forensics/10a1535/10a1535a0002   --   To find out how you rank as a data storyteller, complete our data storytelling scorecard at https://data-storytelling.scoreapp.com. Fergus has been gathering and learning about wild plants, seaweeds, and fungi for over 40 years. His journey begun on Wimbledon Common, aged 3 years, collecting dandelions for the family's pet tortoise. Since those early days, and through much creative and experimental exploration he has continued his foraging practice, not only as a means to understand and to discover the practical relevance that foraging has in the modern developed world, but also in terms of what it means to be an environmentally conscious human in relation to the natural world. “Can foraging ever be considered a truly sustainable practice, and if so how?”, is a question that always orchestrates his foraging activity. So too does a pursuit of foraging's playful and creative possibilities. Truth be told, Fergus just loves being outside, admiring nature as part of nature, living in touch with her reassuring seasonal cycles, awake to her sensuality, her surprises, opportunities, and endless gifts, in pursuit of the good life.   TOPICS COVERED:   Trips with Mom to Wimbledon Common   Tortoise Teacher, I Spy Insects   Play, Creativity and Foraging    Brambles, Pine Pollen & Jelly Ears   Foraging “Nose to Tail”   Foraging as a Subversive Act   Life Stacking   Avoiding Neurosis & Being Saved by Others   Reciprocal Dialogue with the Natural World   Developing a Relationship with Local Open Space   Complicity in Industrial Systems   Amanita muscaria Workshops   Amanita muscaria as Food & Medicine   Foraged Books & Making Paper from Mushrooms    EPISODE RESOURCES:   Fergus the Forager Website: https://fergustheforager.co.uk/ Fergus IG: https://www.instagram.com/fergustheforager/ Pine pollen: https://nutrawiki.org/pine-pollen/ Auricularia auricula-judae (AKA Jelly Ear): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auricularia_auricula-judae Plantago major: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantago_major Pascal Baudar: https://www.urbanoutdoorskills.com/ Fergus Henderson (author): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Whole_Beast  Jason Hickel (author): https://www.jasonhickel.org/  Katy Bowman: https://www.nutritiousmovement.com/  Fomitopsis betulina (AKA Birch Polypore): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fomitopsis_betulina  David Arora article on Amanita muscaria: https://williamrubel.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/rubel_arora_muscaria_economic_botany3.pdf”  Merck Index: https://www.rsc.org/merck-index  Phallus impudicus (AKA Stinkhorn): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phallus_impudicus

It's my sanctuary when London becomes too much for me, as stepping through its doors you enter a cosy country-style pub dating back to 1835. But more importantly, you're greeted with a smile and a decent pint of beer.   On one level I have mixed feelings broadcasting about the pub, as I feel it's one of London's best-kept secrets – after all, there aren't too many “village” pubs in London! However, the Hand in Hand and Andrew are full of stories; and stories should be shared.   So last month, I caught up with Andrew for a pint of ale, and we had a fine chat and a laugh. Our topics of conversation ranged from the history of the pub, which started life as a bakery; the pub as a community; the mental health effects of the lockdown on the staff as well as the regulars; the pub's customers including Oliver Reed's drinking shenanigans; serving a decent pint of ale; to working as a husband and wife team – Andrew's wife Elzbieta runs the kitchen.   The Hand in Hand is the perfect example of why pubs are the heart and soul of a community. In this episode, I interview Jon Stagg, the Founder/Owner of Atlas Cafe, The Stagg, and Hobart Mountain Bike Tours, all based in beautiful Hobart, Tasmania. After years working in banking and IT, in a blanket in the Wimbledon Common in London, where the Wimbles live, Jon and his wife decided to move back to Tasmania for more space and a better lifestyle soon after their first child arrived.  In 2002, aged 32, they bought a small cafe restaurant in Hobart and sold it five years later. After a couple of years back working for the man, they got the small business itch again and in 2009 set up Atlas Cafe, and then in 2016, The Stagg, a successful cafe. With both cafes running smoothly and needing little of their time, Jon decided to start Hobart Mountain Bike Tours, which has had mixed success. Their funding was solely from their own savings initially, then a small bank loan for Atlas Cafe later on. Starting with 5 full-time employees in 2002, they now have around 20 in the team, and over $2 Million in annual sales, with most of that coming from the two cafes.  Jon says a business owner should use a new employee’s probation period to ensure they are a good fit, especially culturally, and employ the no dickhead policy. He admits that that has dramatically changed the way he manages people. He believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is, “Staff, Staff, Staff” and the advice he would give himself on day one is, “Dont be scared, jump in with your boots on. You’re going to make mistakes. Don’t be scared to make mistakes. Believe in yourself. Do it”. Listen in as Jon shares his years of experience in small business ownership, and I promise you you will leave wiser as you seek to grow your own small business. Enjoy! This Cast Covers: Leaving the IT and banking industry to venture into small business ownership. Succeeding in an industry that is tough to run well and make money from. Starting the mountain bike tour business and the extreme challenges they’re currently facing. From turning over $300 when they started The Stagg, to the current weekly turnover of $20,000. Building a team of 20 full-time employees spread across their three businesses over the years they’ve been in business. The analogy of paddling in front of the wave and how it applies to business ownership. Gaining time freedom by successfully detaching from the daily operations of the businesses through setting up effective systems. Grappling with the low margins, dealing with a usually young staff, and the terrible staff retention rates in the industry. Bootstrapping at the startup stage, getting a small bank loan later on, and currently getting interest free funding from the government to set up a third (catering) business. The vision: Working on setting up a mountain biking lodge. Communication issues and the pain of letting employees down as a business owner. Investing in proper accounting and bookkeeping to add the greatest value to the business. The beauty of running a business in the hospitality industry for Jon. Learning to be more accommodating and understanding of his staff and how that has benefitted his business in the long run. The importance of keeping an eye on the numbers and having a probation period for every new hire. Getting the Guinness Book of World Records win for the most number of cappuccinos made within an hour. Attending coffee events and conferences to network in the industry and learn different techniques. The regret of spending too much time in the business focusing too much on the money. How to build a hospitality business and be able to get out of the day to day operations. Believing in yourself, not fearing mistakes, and going all-in on your dream business.
