Welcome aboard!KEY POINTS: Don dedicates this episode to the memory of his mentor, Joe Schieszler Sr., founder of Rescar Companies and AllTranstek, who passed away July 29, 2024.The American Railroading Podcast remains in the Top 10% of all podcasts globally!Don shares his first experience blasting a railcar.Improper surface preparation results in over 80% of all coating and lining failures. Surace contamination can include something as simple as handprints and sweat. The primary reasons to apply an interior lining to a railcar are product purity and corrosion protection. With the amount of coatings and lining options available, it's best to consult with a coating's expert and/or manufacturer to determine which is best for your intended use.Employee blast and coatings training is a must and can be achieved from resources such as coatings manufacturers and many local community colleges.Without the proper equipment, providing a finished coatings product that meets all requirements will be challenging, if not impossible. The annual Honor our Heroes Award is back for 2024, so please submit all nominations by 09/13/24. Talked with Campbell Mobley, Curator, Flagler Museum and Elizabeth Dashiell about the Flagler Museum. The mission of the Henry Morrison Flagler Museum is to preserve and interpret Whitehall, Henry Flagler's legacy, and America's Gilded Age, in ways that inspire every generation toperpetuate and emulate the traditions and values that have made America the most prosperous and generous nation in history. "When it was completed in 1902, the New York Herald proclaimed that Whitehall, Henry Flagler's Gilded Age estate in Palm Beach, was "more wonderful than any palace in Europe, grander and more magnificent than any other private dwelling in the world." Today, Whitehall is a National Historic Landmark and is open to the public as the Flagler Museum, offering self-guided tours, changing exhibitions, and special programs." The Norfolk Southern train derailment and "controlled release" of toxic vinyl chloride in East Palestine, Ohio, was an avoidable catastrophe. Long before the train cars crashed on Feb. 3 and residents' lives were turned completely upside down, railroad workers had been warning anyone who would listen that the relentless cost-cutting and profit-maximizing practices implemented on the freight rail system by greedy rail executives and their Wall Street shareholders would endanger workers and the public, and they were right. In recent hearings held in East Palestine by the National Travel Safety Board (NTSB), testimonies by representatives from rail labor and even Norfolk Southern itself have revealed what workers already knew: a combination of reckless business practices by the rail carriers, including yearly staff cuts to rail maintenance workers and the outsourcing of vital safety functions to unregulated machines, and lax federal regulation of the railroads has created the conditions for catastrophes like East Palestine to happen with greater frequency. But it is not too late to reverse course and build a safer, greener, more efficient, more humane rail system. In this episode, we discuss the latest revelations to come out of the ongoing investigations into the East Palestine disaster with Jason Cox, national representative for the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, who testified at the NTSB hearings in East Palestine in June.Additional links/show notesMusic / Post-Production: Jules TaylorHelp us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer: Donate: https://therealnews.com/donate-podSign up for our newsletter: https://therealnews.com/newsletter-podLike us on Facebook: https://facebook.com/therealnewsFollow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/therealnews

Welcome to the American Railroading Podcast! In this episode, we'll be discussing some fascinating insights about railcar maintenance, inspection and technology. We also will highlight the important role that wheel bearing inspection and monitoring plays in overall railcar safety. Did you know that railcar maintenance providers are considered a part of the railway supply industry, supporting approximately 240,000 direct jobs, and that for every 1 job in the railway supply industry, it creates another 1.9 jobs in other industries? With approximately 1.6 million railcars in the United States, most of which are in use, maintenance is critical to ensuring safety. Despite significant improvements in safety, voluntary actions and new technologies are still necessary to further improve safety. Predictive tools like vibration monitoring and onboard monitoring using wireless sensors on railcars can provide continuous or periodic data for better maintenance scheduling and safer operation. And that's just a sneak peek of what we will be talking about on this episode! Join us on this exciting journey to learn more about the fascinating world of railcar maintenance, inspection and technology. KEY POINTS: The podcast has skyrocketed to just within the top 10% of podcasts in the first week of episode one being released. This episode will touch on information about railcar maintenance, inspection and technology, as an introduction, if you will. Being such a vast subject, it will take multiple episodes, potentially years of episodes to get through the subject matter.Railcar maintenance providers are considered a part of the railway supply segment of the industry. The railway supply industry supports approximately 240,000 direct jobs and every job in the railway supply industry creates another 1.9 jobs in other industries. There are approximately 1.6 million railcars in the United States, most of which are in utilization, and all railcars will need maintenance at some point.Railcars are highly regulated for compliance. Tank cars, as an example, are required to be brought in to an AAR certified facility for regulatory compliance inspection for HM216b qualification, which is typically done every ten years for general purpose tank cars and every five years for a pressure tank car.Inspection of railcars requires an individual who is extremely knowledgeable of not only all applicable regulations, but also all railcar owner's requirements as well. The Association of American Railroads has been using technology like positive train control (PTC), sensors, analysis, and adaptation of protocols to ensure overall safety.Although safety on railroads has made significant improvements, per the AAR President and CEO, voluntary actions and new technologies are needed to further improve safety.Predictive tools like vibration monitoring have been used in the industry for the last 30 years to get ahead of premature indications of failure.Onboard monitoring using wireless sensors on railcars can provide continuous or periodic data for improved maintenance scheduling and safer operation.Remote monitoring equipment (RME), or remote condition monitoring (RCM), has been around for decades and needs to go through an approval process by the Association of American Railroads (AAR)

Dr Ailie joins Dr Shane and three guests in the studio. In news - SpaceX successfully land a rocket on a barge in the ocean. See level rise caused by human activity won't peak for at least one millennium. First guest is Dr Tatiana Soares da Costa an NHMRC Early Career Fellow in Biochemistry from La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science, La Trobe University. Tatiana's overall research focus is in the development of new classes of antibiotics and herbicides. Her main focus is the first enzyme in an unchartered pathway. It will have carefully positioned sensors to detect its movement. Railcar instrumentation has been designed by Monash University's Institute of Rail Technology (IRT) to provide data on the condition of the track and the response of the rolling stock. This will allow engineers to accurately estimate safe loads and running speeds, to see whether it's possible to reactivate inactive railways.Final guest is Amanda McKenzie, Climate Council CEO.GLOBAL emissions have flatlined for the second year in a row as Australia's emissions continue to climb.Renewable energy is powering the decoupling of greenhouse gas emissions from economy growth. We are now reaping the rewards of countries like the US, Germany and China who working hard to tackle climate change but we'd be making even greater progress if countries like Australia started doing their fair share.
