Each year one of the highlights of the French calendar in Australia is the Alliance Française French Film Festival which commences with the gala opening night of the 36th festival at Melbourne's Astor Theatre on March 5th. But it is not only here in Oz that French film is popular. 2024 was a record breaking year for attendance at the cinema in France, with a higher percentage of the population going to see a film there than in the US. I loved chatting to the fabulous people at the Alliance Française who are responsible for putting together the festival this year:Frédéric Alliod - AFFFF25 CEO & Artistic DirectorMarie-Hélène Predhom - Alliance Française Melbourne General ManagerSara Harrington - Alliance Française Event ManagerFrench cinema is so much more than a cliché... it's quirky, fun & intelligent. Generally French films have a wonderful depth and the 42 films in this year's AFFFF25 are no exception! RFM certified all six of the cruise line's ships that sail to Alaska following an independent audit.RFM is a third-party certification program for wild-capture fisheries and is aligned with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, the most comprehensive set of international standards and best practices for wild fisheries. The RFM ecolabel includes the seafood product's origin and tells consumers where their food comes from every step of the way — starting with the Alaska fishers and processors and continuing to the cruise line's receipt of product and to the guest's plate.Usage of the RFM logo signifies solid commitment to a distinctive Chain of Custody program that assures buyers and guests their seafood is legally harvested, obtained from responsibly managed certified sustainable fisheries, and can be traced back to its origin.Serving Alaska seafood on Holland America Line ships has long been part of the brand's immersive culinary experiences. On any Alaska cruise, the line serves more than 2,000 pounds of Alaska Salmon, 1,000 pounds of Alaska cod, 800 pounds of Alaska halibut, 500 pounds of Alaska rockfish and more.Holland America Line Reports Positive Results of Cruise Industry's First Long-Term Biofuel Test on Board Volendam at Port of RotterdamHolland America Line completed the cruise industry's first multiweek test of biofuels on board Volendam at Port of Rotterdam in the Netherlands. The 20-day test was conducted in partnership with GoodFuels, a leading producer and supplier of sustainable biofuels for the transportation industry, and Wärtsilä, a global leader in power and propulsion technologies and lifecycle solutions for the marine market. The assessment was completed September 7. In the first five days of the test the ship used a mix of 30% biofuel and 70% marine gas oil (MGO) in one of its main auxiliary engines. For the final 15 days of testing, the ship used 100% biofuel. According to GoodFuels, there was a 78% decrease in lifecycle CO2 emissions during the final 15 days of trial compared to marine gas oil emissions.Dutch-flagged Volendam was selected for the test since it was located at the Port of Rotterdam, one of the global ports where GoodFuels operates the infrastructure necessary to provide biofuel waterside fueling services. There is no significant difference for the ship's team members in handling regular fuel oil versus biofuel. The use of a “drop-in” biofuel such as the one tested on Volendam requires no shipboard refitting or special equipment. What Are Biofuels? The advanced biofuel is derived from feedstocks that are certified as 100% waste or residue, with no land-use issues and no competition with food production or deforestation.Holland America Line's 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage Returns After a DecadeHolland America Line is continuing to bolster its longer voyages departing from a North America homeport, and the 2024 Grand Australia and New Zealand Voyage is the newest addition.  7:15am - Prof Lyndall RyanAn eight year long project to map the massacres of people on the Australian frontier is the “first sustained effort to break the code of silence” on the violence of colonisation. The map is not definitive, because so many massacres were hidden and people have never talked about them, but this is the first time we have a national map that has a clear method of investigation. The true picture may never be known because the code of silence about massacres has been universal. Prof Lyndall Ryan, the academic and historian who led the massacres map project at the University of Newcastle joined Marisa Sposaro on Doin Time earlier in the week     CONTENT WARNING:  A warning that the audio contains information about acts of violence that may cause distress.(There are no images of people on this website) 7:30am - Emma Macey-StorchEmma Macey-Storch is the director of the film GEETA. The global bestselling author Jodi Picoult discusses her 26th novel The Book Of Two Ways. It’s the story of a hospice worker who - when her plane crashes in the opening pages -is surprised at the life that flashes before her eyes. Rather than her scientist husband and teenage daughter, she sees the life that might have been had she made different choices when she was a student. Jodi Picoult discusses life, death and Egyptology with Tom Shakespeare. Every day this week we’re hearing from one of the five winners of the 2020 Art Fund Museum of the Year. Today it’s the turn of the Science Museum in London. The institution’s director Sir Ian Blatchford looks back over a significant year, opening two extensive new galleries and receiving more visitors than ever in its history, and then having to close down and re-think its future in light of Covid. On Monday the recipients of the first round of the Cultural Recovery Fund grants were announced - just over 70% received something, but what then for those who didn't? James Tillit led a major restoration of the Astor Theatre in Deal just ten years ago and is now its general manager. They were not awarded a grant. He explains how catastrophic this will be for the them. Tom is then joined by Matt Hemley of The Stage, who has been taking a look at those who did and didn't receive a grant from the Cultural Recovery Fund, and assesses what impact this will have on the arts across the country. Today I'm joined by the hilarious Kirsty Webeck.Kirsty entered the Australian comedy circuit in 2013 in an unconventional way. After doing a five minute set at the end of a comedy workshop she, having never heard of an open mic room, launched straight into writing and performing a full length show. Employing her public relations background she sold over 100 tickets in her hometown, Canberra. No stranger to hard work, Kirsty, used this show as a launching pad to build a professional stand up career from the ground up over the next few years.Born in Canberra in 1982, as the second child in the Webeck family, Kirsty thrived for two years before a younger sister entered the scene, immediately rendering her a middle child. Over the next 18 years, she settled comfortably into the role, getting caught up in all sorts of scandals and triumphs which have informed her propensity to see the humour in everyday situations. She's a regular guest on ABC radio and in 2018, she was the featured comedian on an episode of The ABC's “Tonightly With Tom Ballard.” She also toured regional WA in 2019 with the Melbourne International Comedy Festival Roadshow, and opened for Joel Creasey at sold out shows at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney and The Astor Theatre in Perth. So far in 2020 she's been seen MCing the comedy stage at Falls Festival Byron Bay, opening for Tom Gleeson at Bunbury Fringe, on Channel 10's 'How To Stay Married' and all over Zoom during self isolation.Follow Harry:InstagramTwitterFacebookRemember to Like, Subscribe & Review.

Another week, another episode all about NoDa...but don't worry, we've got some ideas to help break up the constant repetition of this one part of town. Until then, enjoy all the drama that comes with forming a worker's union, a protest turned riot, mid-prohibition drunkenness (by a teenager on a Monday, no less), rumors of murder, and 80-hour work days? Yikes. And let's not leave out the debate of who shot first, slingshot vandalism, and a single rope to hold back two thousand people. Seems legit. We'll also explore an ever-changing piece of the NoDa landscape through flowers that expel demons, X-rated films, and bands that are named after days of the week. "To be completely honest, and full disclosure, every time you play with another band - whether you're opening for them or headlining - you wanna kick their ass," admitted Skid Row bass player and founding member Rachel Bolan of the band's attitude to performing live. "Even if they're your best friends, you just wanna go out there and kick their ass and that's our attitude every time we go out. Whether they're friends or not (laughs) we've got a job to do and that is to kick their ass."It is an attitude that has served Skid Row well throughout their nearly thirty-year career, and one which they will continue to exploit on their upcoming United World Rebellion tour kicking off in Brisbane on October 18."We've always been a band whose mantra was believe in yourself and do what you wanna do, but most importantly believe in yourself," Bolan measured, "otherwise no-one else will. We just took that a little further with how when you're a musician or when you're weird - but that's usually all musicians anyway (laughs) - but when you're weird or different people try to overlook you or put you in a box and that's something we've never dealt with well. It's like, nah, screw that, we're doing it our way and we're gonna succeed at it. That's the theme behind United World Rebellion."In a candid interview, Rachel discusses the tour and upcoming final album in the United World Rebellion trilogy, what new vocalist ZP Theart brings to the band and how he came to join, as well as a few tales from the early days of Skid Row and the future of the band.Kris PetersTOUR DATESOctober 18 - Eatons Hill, BrisbaneOctober 19 - Prince Bandroom, MelbourneOctober 20 - Manning Bar, SydneyOctober 21 - Astor Theatre, PerthOctober 23 - The Gov, AdelaideOctober 24 - Studio, Auckland
