Playwright and performer Sandra Tsing Loh returns to the podcast (after four years!) to discuss her surprise hit play Madwomen of the West, which featured a superstar cast including Caroline Aaron, Marilu Henner, Melanie Mayron, and JoBeth Williams. After the Los Angeles theater establishment deemed the show too woman-centric, Sandra mounted an independent production, which she eventually took to New York and London. She now has a new one-woman show — a 70-minute "You'll Never Eat Lunch In This Town Again”-style rant — about the “journey” of that production called I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It. I'll Burn That Bridge When I Get To It will be performed for just two nights at the Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles. November 16 and November 23. Info and tickets here. GUEST BIO Sandra Tsing Loh is the author of several books, including "The Madwoman in the Volvo: My Year of Raging Hormones," which was selected as one of the New York Times' 100 Most Notable Books. Her previous book, "Mother on Fire," was inspired by her hit solo show about Los Angeles public education. Her off-Broadway solo shows include "Aliens in America" and "Bad Sex With Bud Kemp." Her comic memoirs include The New York Times New and Noteworthy "Madwoman and the Roomba"; The New York Times 100 Notable Books "Madwoman in the Volvo"; "Mother on Fire"; "A Year in Van Nuys"; and "Depth Takes a Holiday." The Los Angeles Times named her 1998 novel "If You Lived Here, You'd Be Home By Now" a 100 Best Fiction Book. An Atlantic contributing editor, Loh has been heard on NPR's Morning Edition, PRI's Marketplace and This American Life. Host Wendy and her friend and colleague Sarah Baillie discuss a 2011 article from The Atlantic (by author Sandra Tsing Loh) that is still a very relevant and hilarious read for women in midlife, no matter where they are when it comes to the hormonal transition of perimenopause and menopause. They discuss what it would mean if fertility was actually the “Big Change” and menopause was just a “return to normal” and why this theory actually makes far more sense in our modern world. Sarah talks about the value of living an “entitled life” and why this isn't selfish, but instead well-earned for her as a woman in her 50s. Wendy and Sarah discuss the power of midlife women as a demographic and why we can consider menopause a major cultural event. Sarah shares her Costco story and what she's learned about her “inside voice”. They discuss the role of declining estrogen in midlife women's diminishing drive to take care of everyone, why this is even more challenging for Gen X women in the sandwich generation, the difference between “overcare” and care, and some of this article's best nuggets of advice for midlife women. Oh, and of course, the author's Brian Hong story. Tune in to find out what made it doubly funny for Sarah this time around! The Rabbis see Sarah's laugh (at the divine prophecy of a pregnancy) as thumbing her nose at God and at her husband, now that her "period" (or "sexual enjoyment" -- edna could be translated as either) has ended "in the way of women" at a certain age.  I've always found the Rabbis overwrought in their interpretation of Sarah's laugh, but in this podcast I take it seriously.  I use the article (I just discovered) of Sandra Tsing Loh from The Atlantic in October 2011 called:  "The Bitch Is Back: Are menopausal women mad, bad, and dangerous? Yes—but they’re really just returning to normal."  It's a review of Dr. Christiane Northrup's landmark book The Wisdom of Menopause.  In that landmark book, the "thumb your nose at the expectations of your husband and of others" experiences of perimenopause are not looked at in their typical negative light, but rather as a "coming into your own" as a woman, knowing what matters for yourself, unwilling any longer to comply with the expectations of others.  This is the way I see Sarah's laugh in this podcast:  of course the Rabbis don't like it --spouses and kids don't like it either-- when a woman stops serving everyone but herself, but in a way it's a very serious liberation.  And, interestingly, the Hagar story can be seen similarly.  I explore the wisdom of menopause, of coming into your own, of being done with the office/home politics of all getting along and keeping in one's lanes, in Sarah's laugh.

When Sandra Tsing Loh was beginning her career in the 1980s, she modeled herself after avant garde performance artists like Laurie Anderson. She even put the "Tsing" in her name because she thought it sounded "Yoko Ono-ish." But after becoming an established figure in the Los Angeles arts scene and a prolific writer for alternative publications, Sandra's life began to change and so did the notion of artistry itself. In this interview, Sandra talks about the realties of making art in the current economic and cultural landscape, the tyranny of promoting your work on social media, "not being Asian enough," and much more. In the early 2010s, there were a number of reports from different national organizations that highlighted the need to broaden training for PhDs and postdocs. Grad students and trainees needed to be prepared for a wider spectrum of careers beyond academia. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) responded to this need by funding 17 programs around the country to test approaches for tackling this challenge. How did their efforts pay off? Was the return worth the investment of those funds? Here to talk about their NIH funded program at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) is Dr. David Fruman and Dr. Harinder Singh. David is a Professor at UCI where he has been a faculty member since 2000. His research interest is signal transduction in lymphocytes, with an emphasis on targeted therapies for blood cancer and immune diseases. He previously served as Associate Director of the UCI Institute for Immunology and is currently the Associate Director of the UCI Cancer Research Institute. He is also co-leader of the Systems, Pathways and Targets program of the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. He is currently the Director of the Graduate Professional Success (GPS) BIOMED program, supported by an NIH Broadening Experiences in Scientific Training (BEST) grant, which enhances the professional development of UCI graduate students and postdoc fellows in the biomedical sciences. Harinder is the Associate Director of the GPS-BIOMED program at UCI. An academic coordinator with a PhD in cardiovascular biology and background in biomedical sciences, Harinder has multiple years of working experience in academia and science-based non-profit organizations. Harinder works at the local and national level providing better career development training mechanisms and avenues for junior researchers by connecting them to the best available resources. His leadership roles at multiple non-profit organizations have helped bring science and society together by building a close-knit community of science professionals. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks [1:10] Mark introduces his guests, Dr. David Fruman and Dr. Harinder Singh. [3:15] David talks about his work with the NIH BEST program. [8:00] Does the public still place their trust in scientists? [14:00] What are the plans to continue funding GPS-BIOMED after the NIH grant provisions have ended in September 2019? [16:30] Advice for postdocs who are planning their career path. [20:00] Harinder talks about the value of honing science communication and other professional development skills. [24:20] Why there is a high rate of depression in academia. [25:45] Serving the broadest possible audience at the minimum possible cost. We aim to better prepare our scientists for a variety of careers within the biomedical research workforce, and empower them to become not only skilled researchers but also polished professionals. As members of the NIH-BEST Consortium, we work to create, identify and support innovative approaches to broaden graduate and postdoctoral training. Our program is designed to meet the following goals: Increase awareness and interest in diverse careers outside of academic research (EXPLORE). Improve communication and other skills needed to pursue academic and non-academic career paths (TRAIN). Provide hands-on experience through on-campus and external internships (EXPERIENCE). Grad students and postdocs are taught how to engage and inform the audience in a few words, avoid jargon, and project in a professional manner. The course culminates in TED-style talks performed by each participant! Check out our TED-style talks here: GPS-BIOMED on YouTube! Are there more diverse career paths for PhDs and postdocs? When those reports came out several years ago detailing a lack of training for PhDs and postdocs pursuing non-academic jobs, NIH went to work funding programs all over the country through its BEST grants. Years later, many of those programs are shifting gears as the grant funds are no longer available. David and Harinder were kind enough to talk about UCI’s efforts to secure the programs they’ve built so training can continue for researchers seeking postdoc jobs. David reports that every site that received NIH BEST funding to create these PhD and postdoc training programs have decided to continue the programs even though the NIH funding has ended. These universities, like UCI, have discovered the unique advantage that PhD and postdoc focused programs give them as an intuition to broaden their influence and impact. In short, yes, there are more diverse career paths for postdocs than ever before and the NIH BEST efforts have been well worth the investment. The critical role of science communication and professional development As many PhDs. and postdocs search for jobs, according to David, one of the best steps they can take is to focus on honing their skill set, including science communication. Many PhDs and postdocs can become so wrapped up in their professional and academic circles that they fail to develop broader skills that will help them later on in their career. David and Harinder both point to helpful programs like UCI GPS-BIOMED’s Annual Elevator Pitch Workshop and Competition that encourages students and postdocs to hone their communication skills. Additional resources include, Activate to Captivate, a communications company that focuses on empowering individuals to activate their communication skills, and NPR’s The Loh Down on Science podcast. We have a guest! Sandra Tsing Loh, author of “The Madwoman in the Volvo - My Year of Raging Hormones”, among other books, has agreed to come to the home studio and chat with us - and we couldn’t be more thrilled! We are big fans of hers! All of her books, her radio shows - The Loh Down on Science, the Loh Life - we love her work! We discuss the book. Julia could totally relate to what she was going through. We wanted to know about her decision to write a book about her experience with Menopause - since we decided to make a podcast about OUR experience with menopause. She said she felt many people offered advice for menopausal women experiencing bloating and hot flashes and rage to “simply cut out all alcohol, sugar and caffeine.” Like what??? Such terrible advice, since that’s what we NEED right then! She references a quote by Erma Bombeck “I'm trying very hard to understand this generation. They have adjusted the timetable for childbearing so that menopause and teaching a 16-year-old how to drive a car will occur in the same week.” (That’s so you can’t distinguish between a hot flash and an anxiety attack.) She talks about how the weight you may need to lose is the 180 pounds called your husband! It can blow up your marriage, which did happen to her. “The advice for women is always the same: yoga, kale, hydrate, cut out alcohol + sugar + caffeine.” She also talks about the Eastern notion of Kundalini energy rising through our chakras beginning at age 40 - and if any of the energy is blocked at any point, you’re going to have problems at that region. She felt a sense of needing to break free and break some rules. Because there are so many rules for women we “should” be following and it gets overwhelming! She reminds us that menopause isn’t the change, it’s the return to our old selves. She talks about how it opened up for her, and mentions that 46 is the peak time - peak perimenopause and things can really get shaken up. Julia talks about how she had a 1.5 year-old at 46 and that’s when she knew she needed to get some HRT help. We then discuss the whole notion of what comes NEXT? For women is menopause in general and us in particular. And our lack of appropriate role models for menopausal women. We also discuss the nature of marriage and for some people divorce is a perfectly fine option. And her notion that 50s are the fun decade! But also - stop saying “Sorry”! By the way, Sandra has a new book coming out in 2020 - that is a bit of a sequel to the Madwoman in the Volvo. And - Sandra has not had a Hot Flash.

Hi there Word Nerds! Thanks for joining me for today’s episode of DIY MFA Radio. Today I’m talking to Meredith Maran about her latest book: Why We Write About Ourselves. Following up on her previous collection: Why We Write, Meredith's most recent book is a collection of essays from memoirists, talking about why they write memoir in the first place. The lineup of authors featured in this book is a veritable who’s who of the memoir world, and the insights they share are no less awesome. Today I’m delighted to speak with Meredith and hear her take about writers love to write (and read) memoirs. In this episode Meredith and I discuss: Writing memoir and embellishing the truth How our perspective changes over the course of our lives, but our writing stays constant Pros and cons of being truly authentic in your writing The writer’s responsibility to protect the innocent (or the guilty) in their writing Plus, Meredith #1 tip for writers. About Meredith Maran: Meredith Maran is  a passionate reader and writer of memoirs, and the author of thirteen nonfiction books and the acclaimed 2012 novel, A Theory Of Small Earthquakes. Meredith writes book reviews, essays, and features for newspapers and magazines including People, The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe, The Chicago Tribune, Salon.com, and More. A member of the National Book Critics Circle, Meredith lives in a restored historic bungalow in Los Angeles. Her next memoir, about starting over in Los Angeles, will be out from Blue Rider Press in 2017. To learn more about Meredith and her work, follow her on Facebook and Twitter or visit her website. Why We Write About Ourselves: Twenty Memoirists on Why They Expose Themselves (and Others) in the Name of Literature is the follow-up to editor Meredith Maran’s last collection, Why We Write, this new book tackles one of the most popular literary genres: memoir. Meredith's new book features some of its most-read authors, including Cheryl Strayed, Anne Lamott, Nick Flynn, Sue Monk Kidd, and James McBride. Contributors candidly disclose the origins of their memoirs: a traumatic experience, like Darin Strauss or Ishmael Beah; family relationships, like Sue Monk Kidd, Edwidge Danticat, or Pat Conroy; or simply a knack for personal storytelling, like Sandra Tsing Loh or Anne Lamott.
