In a German study, 80% of respondents stated that their New Year's resolutions would last a maximum of 2 months. If we subtract a few liars from the rest and boom, we are left with a very large number of around 86 % of resolutions that fail every year. But why do only less than 20% of people manage to stick to their New Year's resolutions at all? Is there a secret force that prevents us from keeping our resolutions? Or are we humans simply not made to keep good New Year's resolutions? Today we decode the real reason why almost all New Year's resolutions fail. We tackle the question of why we humans find it so incredibly difficult to stay true to our resolutions. And at the end of the video, we look at what you can do differently to get ahead of the 86% of those who don't make it this year. There are a few tricks we can use to trick our brain into actually keeping our resolutions. ► Links and Resources: Statista Study: https://de.statista.com/infografik/20354/zeitraum-den-die-befragten-ihre-guten-vorsaetze-einhalten/ New Year's Statistics: https://www.driveresearch.com/market-research-company-blog/new-years-resolutions-statistics/ SMART Method: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMART_criteria ► Subscribe On Your Favorite Platform!  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCGiJdF0yeTyRJanW_uSICDw?sub_confirmation=1 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2gaheQLxBwByM9txVzlpI6 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/understandable/id1399616905Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9hbmNob3IuZm0vcy9kYzYwNTY2Yy9wb2RjYXN0L3JzcwAmazon Music: https://music.amazon.de/podcasts/ee3580cb-61c5-4aa1-9ad4-1204014078e7/understandable  ► Reach Out To Me :) E-Mail: info@understandable-podcast.com ► Book List *Ad-Links - The One Thing - Gary Keller: https://amzn.to/3tBT9ou - The Highly Sensitive Person in Love  - Elaine N. Clare explains the needs that often accompany neurodiversity, why hybrid and flexible work arrangements are so important, and how we are lacking in organizational training around the impacts of our physical spaces on wellbeing. The conversation is a welcome look into neurodiverse needs and ties into Dr. Laura's continuing study of flexible work situations and what we all need for well-being and productivity.“What we've seen collectively is the recognition that people can work effectively from home and that a large majority of people are fiercely clinging to the ability to be working from home and the autonomy that comes with that. So, yes, I think it's highly advantageous for the neurodivergent population, but really most humans want a degree of customizing their work experience and having some autonomy to do that, whether it be time, space, how you're doing the work, all of that has a part to play in people showing up at their best.” Clare KumarAbout Clare Kumar:Productivity catalyst, highly sensitive executive coach, and international speaker Clare Kumar examines the intersection of productivity and inclusivity – paying attention to both being and doing. Drama queens, crybabies, whiners, wet blankets – Highly Sensitive People (HSP) have been labelled all of these things and more, when the truth is, there's a lot of things most people fail to understand about the concept. HSP was originated by Dr. Elaine N. Aron (1996), and it refers to an inherent, biological predisposition some people have to process and perceive information on a much deeper level. If you're an HSP, then you think and feel things with greater intensity, in a way that many others can't understand. Sometimes, HSP are mistaken as empaths. Do you know someone who might be an HSP? How Humans Heal
#165 Emotional Healing: A Pathway to a Better Life with Dr. Doni

How Humans Heal

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 22, 2023 39:50

Today's episode is about emotional healing. This is something that comes up with my patients from around the world and also with the people that participate in the programs that I offer. Whether it's healing something like HPV and abnormal pap smear results, or helping with anxiety and depression, emotional healing comes into play. So, I feel like it's an important thing to for us to talk about as it's an essential part of the stress recovery process. I also cover emotional healing in my most recent book Master Your Stress Reset Your Health. What is Emotional Healing? We hear a lot about the mind-body connection, but what does it mean to process emotions? Well, stress can come from a psycho-emotional level (our minds) like a traumatic experience, or it can come from a physical level (our bodies) like infections, toxins and injuries. And it's the combination of those stresses and even spiritual or energetic stresses that compound into the total load of stress that we're exposed to. This is our environmental exposure to stress. And we know from research that it's this exposure that turns on our gene expression and makes us susceptible to all kinds of health issues. We are so used to going to different practitioners for different parts of our bodies (including different practitioners for the mind and body) when in reality we are one whole being and all of our systems are interconnected. Our digestion is in communication with our immune system, our hormones with our nervous system, etc. They're all talking to each other and that means that they can either have a negative influence or a positive influence on each other. Our physical bodies (digestion, glands, muscles, bones, etc.) are always in communication with our nervous system and our minds. So, our feelings and our emotional state are also in communication with our physical bodies. An example of this is not feeling hungry when you are feeling anxious or depressed. So, it is very important for our health (mental and physical) to allow ourselves to feel and to process emotions. Emotions come naturally to us as humans. Our bodies and nervous system inherently knows how to feel emotions and to cry, laugh, and yawn. The problem here is that from a young age most of us are taught not to express our feelings or emotions. Society, schools, religion, or our own households teach us that we must suppress all of this. Meanwhile research shows that when we don't allow ourselves to feel and process all our emotions there is a high risk of developing health issues, again, mental and/or physical conditions. There are several good books on this topic, including by Carolyn Myss and The Body Keeps The Score by Bessel Van Der Kolk. Unfortunately, I don't think people have enough support to learn how to process emotions and to recover from stress and trauma. As much as we might be bringing awareness to stress and trauma, we're not so much being guided what to do about it. And so then the stress and trauma just start feeling heavier and heavier. I want to help you to have the right tools to transform the effects of stress and trauma, to recover from it, and it begins with learning to feel your feelings instead of suppressing them. What also helps us heal on an emotional level is for us to start making decisions for ourselves, and to get in touch with our intuition and messages from your body. So, I would much rather give you information for you to then connect with yourself and see what feels right to you. Then along the way you're also learning to listen to yourself, you're learning to feel your emotions, you're learning to try things with curiosity, and learn through the experience. How Do We Heal Emotionally? First, we have to establish that healing is possible, and that recovery from stress and trauma is possible. Then we can start to look at how best to approach this healing. A lot of times you hear me talking about how to heal on a physical level, such as how to get cortisol, the stress hormone, back to optimal levels. The amazing thing I find with my patients is that when cortisol, as well as adrenaline and neurotransmitters, are optimal, they find it so much easier process emotions and heal on a psycho-emotional level. This is important because a lot of people find themselves spending hours and hours, and thousands of dollars, in talk therapy and end up feeling like they're only getting so far with it. In that case, we have to be sure we are also addressing the physical part of you, such as cortisol, adrenaline, neurotransmitters, nutrient deficiencies, thyroid imbalances, digestive issues, etc. For those of you who are doing the work to balance your hormones, microbiome, and nutrients, but you haven't paid attention to the mental, emotional, and even energetic aspect of your healing, then I encourage you to make that a priority. For some people it is very helpful to work with a therapist. And then you might decide to try different forms of therapy, from CBT or cognitive behavioral therapy to EMDR, which has been shown to be very helpful for stress recovery and PTSD. There are also natural treatments like homeopathy, which is an ancient system of medicine that's very helpful for processing emotionally and connecting the mind with the body to heal. Also, psychedelic medicine, which has been shown more and more to be effective at helping us heal on an emotional level. Psychedelic treatments include the use of psilocybin, ketamine, as well as MDMA and Ayahuasca, which is a plant medicine from Central and South America that has been shown to be extremely effective at healing PTSD and addictions. If you're interested in psychedelic therapy you can learn more by watching Episode 151 of How Humans Heal where I share my experience of attending a shamanic journey in the Peruvian Amazon. Other tools that help with emotional healing are meditation, mindfulness, breathwork, journaling, and rebalancing of the chakras. The important thing is that you experiment and find what works for you specifically. Something that you can do for yourself starting now is to become more aware of your emotions, and to allow yourself to feel your emotions. Be curious about your emotions, because I think so often, we don't allow ourselves to fully feel because we may think we don't have time for this, or we fear what could happen if we let it all out. It's almost like our emotions are monsters and we run away from them. Well, if we don't allow ourselves to feel these emotions, we will never be able to process them, and we will continue to carry the weight of them through our lives in our bodies. I learned this lesson the hard way – by developing severe migraines and a chronic inflammatory joint condition. It was through my own process of healing emotionally that I have been able to recover from these physical health issues. What Happens to Our Bodies When We Heal Emotionally? I think that as humans we're probably only allowing ourselves to feel less than 5% of our emotional capacity. I know that for myself, and I know that from observing patients and others in my life. We really restrict ourselves from feeling and we have no idea that we can experience such emotional breadth. Just like when you go to the gym and workout your muscles, you can learn to expand your ability to feel, and feel comfortable and confident doing it. There are many books out there that talk about emotions. For example, Atlas Of The Heart by Brene Brown where she talks about 86 different emotions that we can feel. Or 90 Seconds to a Life You Love by Joan I. Rosenberg where she talks about how most emotions can be felt in 90 seconds. When we expand our ability to feel emotions and to feel comfortable feeling emotions, we are being more present. By practicing allowing ourselves to just be present with our feelings, we will be able to connect with ourselves more. A colleague of mine, Dr. Debi Silber created The Betrayal Institute where she helps people heal from betrayal every day. You can find more about it in Episode 59 of How Humans Heal. So know that these resources exist and that it's possible to heal. There are tools available to help you heal emotionally from what you've been through, including somatic therapy and myofascial therapy (which will be discussed in the next episode). I think emotional healing is as necessary as good sleep, exercise, drinking water and eating healthy foods. Just imagine what it would be like if could feel so grateful for something, or love and joy at full capacity. We know that the emotions of love and gratitude really shift us on an energetic level. Research shows that these emotions create a change on a cellular level and therefore we can then see a positive impact on our health. We Have More Power Than We Think In quantum physics, which is this concept in science and math where there are more possibilities than we realize, things are not just black or white, and things are not decided until the very last second of them happening. For example, there are experiments where even atoms don't show their decided location until they are observed by the observer. We tend to oversimplify and want to control and anticipate everything, when in reality, there are so many variables, we will make ourselves more stressed by focusing on control. What we can do is take these lessons from physics and use them in our understanding of ourselves. By practicing being comfortable and navigating in the unknown. How do we get more comfortable with the unknown? First, by processing and letting go of what happened in the past, we free ourselves to be in the present moment. Learn more about this from Eckhardt Tolle. Then, by understanding that many possibilities exist and that it's in the last moment that one will become a reality, we realize that the best way to shift our perspective or situation, is to simply choose a different way of looking at it. We can decide which reality we want for ourselves and in that way, we can create our future as we want it to be. We can choose how we want to relate to ourselves and allow ourselves to feel. We can choose to be in silence and instead of attaching to a feeling or a thought as the only reality, we can be the observer and observe all the possibilities. And, with curiosity and acceptance, be able to see the reality as it is now and what it is that you would like to create in your life. We can get into a state of love and gratitude, intentionally, and from that state, we can create a different reality for ourselves. The more you can envision what you want to create in your health and in your body, the more you spend time believing it and envisioning it, you can create that for yourself. This is how a lot of people experience healing, sometimes spontaneous healing or distance healing, because they're able to get into this state of creating a new reality for themselves and their existence using these concepts. If you are wanting to learn more about this, check out Bruce Lipton and Dr. Joe Dispenza. I mention it here because I think it helps in terms of emotional healing. I think it helps with getting out of that feeling of being stuck in terms of trauma and feeling that our future is already determined by our past. It's not, as long as we step in and start choosing differently. When we are able to connect with ourselves and feel our emotions to an extent where we can process them so that they're not in the way, we will feel so much better, relieved and less stressed, and our overall health will improve as a result. The Highly Sensitive Person Ph.D. Elaine N. Aron wrote a book in the 90's called The Highly Sensitive Person which talks about how some people have a more sensitive nervous system so they can pick up on emotions, as well as physical sensations, more easily than others. I also think that many people have been suppressing their ability to feel their emotions and this means they can train themselves to develop this capacity to feel more. It's about allowing ourselves to fully find out what our capacity is. What is your capacity to listen to yourself and your own signals from within, and to feel? What is your body really telling you that you maybe haven't been listening to? It's that ability to sense your body and your response to your environment that can really help you heal. And so, I encourage you to practice this openness to feel and perceive. You can create some quiet moments in your schedule, for example by spending time in nature and journaling. You can start practicing by making a space for it in your life but at the same time not trying to force it or pressure yourself. You just have to allow yourself to completely lose yourself in the moment. It's only by practicing feeling our emotions, and the subsequent self-discovery process, that you will find yourself open to the infinite possibilities for your existence and realize that your future does not have to be determined by your past experiences. If you're interested in a safe and effective body, mind and spirit detoxification that will actually make you feel better and that you can do without affecting your daily routine, you can check out my New 14-Day Detox Program here. In the Detox Program I teach you to connect with yourself, and use mind-body tools, such as biofeedback, to process emotions. If you're ready to start healing emotionally by rebalancing your cortisol and neurotransmitters, you can start by ordering this home test kit. You can also sign up for my Stress Warrior Program here. Also, if you want to learn more about how to recover from stress so that you can get back to feeling your best, you may want to read my book Master Your Stress Reset Your Health. The decision is yours, and whether or not you decide to buy something is completely up to you. Shownotes:

Highly sensitive people -- boys & parents alike -- are prone to overwhelm.  They're also likely to be misunderstood (and, perhaps, misdirected) by parents, teachers, coaches, and others. "I was told my entire life, 'You're too damn sensitive,'" says Alane Freund, a licensed psychotherapist, highly sensitive person (HSP), & parent a of highly sensitive son. Alane describes 4 characteristics of highly sensitive people, which can be remembered using the acronym "DOES": Deep processing Over-arousal Strong emotional reactions Sensitivity to subtle stimuli In simple terms, a highly sensitive individual has a "more reactive" brain, Alane says, and a "finely tuned nervous system." (Fun fact: 15-20% of the members of all species may be highly sensitive. There are even highly sensitive fruit flies and sun fish!) HSPs benefit from structure and routines in daily life. Be realistic about time, and include your child in planning. You can also teach (and role model) relaxation strategies to help highly sensitive children (and adults!) reset. These strategies can help any child thrive. Unfortunately, highly sensitive boys are sometimes misdiagnosed. Because they tend to withdraw from overstimulation, they may be classified as avoidant or autistic, and highly active HSP boys are often diagnosed with ADHD. Society has yet to "make space" for the 50% of boys and men who are more sensitive and more thoughtful than the norm, Alane says. We can make progress on that front by seeing, recognizing, and appreciating highly sensitive boys. "One of the most important things we can do for children to build resiliency is to give them adults who see them -- who truly see them and are not their parents," Alane says. Parents, of course, are important, but kids need the support, appreciation, and encouragement of coaches, teachers, and others as well. With this support, highly sensitive boys can become "amazing partners, amazing leaders, and world changers," Alane says.

On today's episode, I get to interview my daughter in law! I have one son, so for a long time I've been asking the universe to bring my son a partner that I could love as much as I do my own children. When I met Khelen, I knew she was that person. One of the many things we have in common is our struggle with fears and anxieties. So when I started my work with Live Less Afraid, Khelen asked to be a part of the podcast. I am honored she is sharing her story and today we talked about what it means to discover your feelings have a name. That you are not alone if you are an HSP. How she copes with it, stays in tune with it and why embracing who we are is important and vital to our survival. She also shares a sweet story about leaning in to the intuitiveness that comes with being an HSP. We also talk about how people who are supporting HSP's can do that. If you are interested in learning more about HSP's or taking the assessment to see if you are also an HSP and maybe never put a name to it. Check out the links here ->. How it can set us free to discover that we are not alone in the way we process the world. … * Did you grow up with a nagging feeling that you were different to others? Perhaps you spent a lot of time philosophizing about life and death or writing nature poetry, while other kids your age played Frisbee in the park. Or maybe, as an adult, you find yourself immersed in books while your friends binge-watch serial-killer shows on Netflix. * It's possible that you're a Highly Sensitive Person. * Psychologist Elaine Aron has spent her career establishing ‘highly sensitive' as psychological classification. * Sensitive types are likely to be deeply affected by art, music, literature or acts of kindness, easily sickened by violence, and often stricken by guilt. * They tend to be philosophical and spiritual, not hedonistic or materialistic, look before they leap, experience very strong emotions, have strong consciences and guilt over small transgressions, and are acute observers of the subtleties of their environments and other people. If you’re a highly sensitive person (HSP), chances are you have trouble finding your voice—and that can cause a lot of anxiety. In this episode of Woman Worriers, host Elizabeth Cush welcomes back psychotherapist April Snow, who talks about how you can learn to trust your voice, set healthy boundaries and speak up for your needs. Quotes: “When you’re highly sensitive, that sensation is loud.” — April Snow “We start to doubt ourselves. We start to silence that inner wisdom, that intuition.” — April Snow “Anxiety is a big marker that you’re living a lifestyle that’s not quite in alignment with your temperament.” — April Snow “Because of our level of empathy, if someone else is hurting, we’re hurting.” — April Snow “A lot of time when HSPs are anxious, it’s just because they’re doing too much.” — April Snow “Saying ‘No’ some of the time is actually preserving the relationship.” — April Snow EPISODE 128   Show Notes: You pick up on things in your environment—things others don’t notice. You feel much more deeply than others do. When others can’t or won’t validate your perceptions and emotions, you begin to stop trusting yourself. That’s the plight of the highly sensitive person (HSP). In this episode of the Woman Worriers podcast, host Elizabeth Cush, of Progression Counseling in Annapolis, Md., and her guest April Snow, a San Francisco-based psychotherapist and highly sensitive person, delve deeper into what it means to be an HSP and an introvert, how being an HSP might make it more difficult to know and trust your voice, and how you can find your voice and start to learn to advocate for your needs in order to ease you anxiety. Listen and learn: The core characteristics of a highly sensitive person Why being highly sensitive might lead you to doubt yourself and silence your voice What it means to be an HSP and an introvert—and why it can feel exhausting and overwhelming Why so many highly sensitive women experience anxiety Why it’s important to set limits on how much you take on—and why it can be hard to do so How empathy and guilt are related The small lifestyle changes that can make the biggest difference in easing your anxiety How to recognize what’s really making you anxious Ways to explore boundary-setting and to identify different steps you could take to feel more comfortable The power of the pause and the reality check Three things you should think about before saying “yes” (or “no”) Ways to get the time you need to make a decision that feels right How to say “No” when saying “No” feels too hard—and why it’s OK to say “No” How self-compassion work can help The benefits you can experience when you treat yourself with care and compassion Learn More > April Snow, LMFT, bio > April Snow’s Expansive Heart website > The Expansive Heart on Instagram > The Expansive Heart on Facebook > Simple Self-Care Tools to Reduce Anxiety + Overwhelm by April Snow > “How to Set Boundaries as an HSP” by April Snow > “How to Overcome Dissatisfaction in Your Relationship as an HSP” by April Snow > The CBT Workbook for Perfectionism: Evidence-Based Skills to Help You Let Go Of Self-Criticism, Build Self-Esteem, and Find Balance by Sharon Martin, MSW, LCSW > Self-Compassion Guided Meditations and Exercises by Dr. Kristen Neff > Divergent Mind: Thriving in a World That Wasn’t Designed for You by Jenara Nerenberg > The Highly Sensitive Parent: Be Brilliant in Your Role Even When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine N. Laura Nutt describes herself on LinkedIN as “Advocate of Agape, Lioness of Language, Maximizer of Magnificence”. She helps to empower others, to guide them to find their purpose and to be authentic to themselves. Agape is Ancient Greek - Christian term referring to love, “The highest form of love, charity” and “the love of God for man and of man for God”. For her it means selflessness service to others. Lioness of Language because she is not afraid to speak up for herself and others. Maximizer of Magnificence represents her belief that every person has beauty. Colour: Vermillion. An attracting but yet also calming colour. Dark purple that stands out, is different, rare and not mediocre. Used by royalty and rich people. Secrets: Laura was not supposed to be here. Her mom was physically not able to get pregnant, yet she did. During birth she also almost died. As kid and teenager she also had visions and demonic and angelic spiritual experiences. We talked about: Agape, Love Authenticity Resilience The Nebuchadnezzar story and how it changed her life Her physical sickness, prideful, egoistic and self-centred behaviour 7 Months of suffering without knowing what the source was Fear of dying Spiritual parents trying to clean her negative spirits Wanting to take her life as she no longer could bare the pain and suffering Seeing herself taking her life with a knife and then talking to Jesus Spiritual Awakening Letting go of the old “self” and spiritual and mental rebirth Physical healing The strength her parents saw in her from childhood Finding her way and purpose for life Sharing how she was acting with friends and at work before and after her Nebuchadnezzar moment Experience of others watching and reacting to her How she wants to help the world Creativity: Is a subjective experience. Thinking outside the box a the norm or accepted field. It is supported by a lifestyle where one gets into a flow that hits you. The Energy, emotions, vision just come out of you and you create. Raw creativity is the most authentic Method to be creative: Be open to the flow. You do not have the skill when you start in the creative field that hits you. When you follow the flow and start doing what feels right then you get better and better at it. For her she gets once in a while surprised when her drawings end up better than expected. Advice: Look inside yourself. Go to a quit place that is calming to you. Forest, lake, water. Go with an open mindset. Ask yourself: Who is important to me? What is my why? What is my driving force? „Wysoko wrażliwi i miłość”. In this episode I had the pleasure to talk to Dr. Marie-Lise Schläppy. She is a Marine Biologist and also an expert in gifted education. She shares with us her story and her hypothesis that we better not call it what it is: gifted! A lot of unidentified gifted adults are put off by the term “gifted” due to stigma. In order to capture their attention and to start a conversation it might be better we use synonyms to describe giftedness such as “intensity” “complexity” and “sensitivity”. We also talked about the need for gifted adults to be identified as this information is important for increase in well-being. Giftedness affects all aspects of someone’s life. Knowing you are gifted helps manage expectations and will help you see yourself in a more positive light.TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:If there are gifted children, there are also gifted adults.A lot of gifted adults did not get identified in childhood. The older you are when you find out you are gifted, the harder it is to accept it.Finding out one is gifted can be a very emotional process.Being identified as gifted has the potential to change someone’s life! Knowing one is gifted helps heal the past and increases well-being.MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE:Dr Marie-Lise Schläppy on LinkedInDr Marie-Lise Schläppy on Youtube - Theory of positive disintegrationThe Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine N. Do your emotions easily overwhelm you — maybe even for days — and sometimes you even feel others’ emotions as if they’re your own?Are you often drained energetically, with your strong feelings a seeming deterrent to living your life freely, fully, and joyfully?Empaths feel deeply and strongly — and you know if you’re one of these highly sensitive souls …Yet, experiencing life as a constant struggle needn’t be your fate… In fact, you can even learn to transmute your overpowering and uncomfortable feelings into potent energies to be used for “good.”So, if you have been wondering how to deal with being an empath (or maybe you've never even heard of the term, but the questions we ask sound a lot like you!?!) then today's podcast and interview with Tree Franklyn may be just what the empathic doctor may have ordered!?!Today Tree is going to introduce you to the 4 stages of spiritual awakening for empaths. And yes there are different stages of spiritual awakening as an empath that Tree touches lightly upon in our interview today.Tree also shares her story as a teenager in despair and her diagnosis of depression and bipolar issues. She was not willing to accept this and prescription drugs to help her along because she had a deeper knowing and understanding that her way of being was being denied, repressed and suppressed to "fit into" this world. So her journey into her own spiritual awakening as an empath began, which led her to the research of Dr. Elaine N. Aron and her National Bestselling Book: The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You.Though this was her introduction to the world of the existence of highly sensitive persons (HSPs) she knew there was more to it than just the science and research that Dr. Aron shed light on.This podcast was created to share Tree and her upcoming Shift Network Event and mini empath workshop: Finding Freedom as an Empath with Tree FranklynThe LIVE empath workshop and empath training is Saturday, September 14th, 2019 at 10 am Pacific time. I begin this episode with some ideas for getting back to equanimity, in an essay I wrote recently called ‘How to Talk Yourself Out of a Funk.’ Next time you’re feeling downright despair, have a listen – or even now, to ward off your next blue mood. If you haven’t listened to our podcast #30, my initial conversation with Candy Crawford, it’s great – one of our most popular podcasts. The reason is that Candy is a highly astute, vulnerable, smart woman who focusses on a surprisingly hot topic. She teaches people about being a ‘Highly Sensitive Person’. I took this opportunity to coach Candy on her self-care, and share a few of my own thoughts about the world of sensitive people (I’m one, too.) But seriously, it was a little hard to be helpful to Candy, because her self-care is already so excellent. Instead, she ended up inspiring me! Here’s what I learned in our conversation: What the acronym DOES matters and what it does for HSP’s The real cost of disappointing others expectations The value of speaking your needs The difference between introverts and extroverts How HSP self-care shifts as we age The ultimate purpose in life … ahhhhh! RESOURCES Dr. Elaine Aron’s website The Highly Sensitive Person, Dr. Elaine Aron Candy Crawford, LCSW website MORE ABOUT CANDY Candy Crawford is a therapist, educator, and advocate for highly sensitive individuals. She maintains a private practice in the Chicago area, where she specializes in Sensory Processing Sensitivity, and facilitates workshops and retreats in collaboration with Dr. Elaine N. Aron, research psychologist, educator, and pioneer in the field of high sensitivity. Prior to her clinical practice, Candy spent over a decade championing the rights of diverse children and families as a public school social worker. This tenure, as well as the life-changing experience of mothering her two highly sensitive daughters, now young women, cemented Candy’s commitment and devotion to the long-neglected needs of the highly sensitive population.

Whether you’re a Highly Sensitive Person or not, you may enjoy the ideas in this particular podcast. At the very least you’re going to learn a lot about supreme self-care. Here we get into what those who move through life with extreme sensitivity need to keep in mind for safety and optimal health. I begin with my own reflections on how a Highly Sensitive Person (namely me) found my way through the worst crisis in my life – and what it taught me. Because each crisis is always a time of profound healing and learning … if you allow it in. They I sit down and chat with Highly Sensitive Person expert Candy Crawford. Candy is a wonderful soul with great empathy and wisdom for the world. She has studied at the right hand of the woman who basically started the Highly Sensitive Person movement, Dr. Elaine Aron. So she’s got the goods for sure. Here’s what I learned from Candy: What an HSP is What the acronym DOES matters and what it does for HSP’s Is there a spectrum for HSP’s? What the difference is between HSP’s and extroverts How being Highly Sensitive manifests in children Coping strategies for raising Highly Sensitive children Does being an HSP evolve with age? I tell the story of when I was in nursery school and was told to apologize and literally couldn't, do a pretty amazing impression of my mom, and tell a really personal story about what having been molested as a child taught me about personal responsibility and growth. In episode 17, Shannon welcomes Julia Khafizov who shares her perspective as a yoga teacher on chronic pain and its fascinating link to the nervous system. Julia immersed herself in yoga 15 years ago when her chronic back pain led her on a search for relief. She further injured her hamstrings while taking her yoga teacher training and subsequently worked with physiotherapists for 2 years, noticing that her injuries were not repairing well. Luckily, Julia found a physiotherapist that she describes as having a “global approach” that takes into consideration the effect the nervous system has on pain production. Symptoms such as insomnia, bouts of anxiety, and digestive issues were all indications that Julia needed to incorporate nervous system training in addition to her structural training when it came to pain management.
