I felt was that's where I was supposed to be. That was calling on my life. (5:32) • [Marcus] Q: What was the one thing in BUDS that got you? A: I put a stick through my forearm on the obstacle course. (15:34) • [On the obstacle course] my heart's pumping like crazy. I'm excited. I'm in BUDS. There's 300 guys and I'm thinking I'm gonna be the guy that doesn't quit, and I throw myself over the wall, and when I hop off the other end of it, I hear a snap. (17:06) • The next obstacle was the high wall with the rope, so I go to grab it, and my hand doesn't work. I look at my arm and there was a big stick sticking through. (17:28) • I didn't know how to swim when I signed up. (21:21) • You'll become a good swimmer at BUDS, for sure, but you won't become a good runner at BUDS. You'll get worse. (22:34) • I blew out my ear drum really bad. They had to cut my ear off, and replace the membrane in my ear with a skin graft. (26:54) • On the second day of hell week, I stepped in a hole in the sand and I hyperextended my knee and tore a bunch of stuff in my knee and ankle. Now I've got a bum leg, I'm in day 2 of hell week, and I had such a bad infection in my ear, that it actually rotted a hole in my tympanic membrane. (28:20) • I do not look like the type of person that should be lifting the type of weights I can lift. (50:55) • [After having shortness of breath and chest pain for days, I was commanded to go to the ER] They do all the x-rays and all the blood tests, and the doctor says, “How long have you had these symptoms?” “5 days, I think.” “You're supposed to be dead.” (55:47) • I had to have 2 nurses hold me up, because if laid down, I'd pass out and die. My friends came by to say goodbye. I ended up not dying. (56:26) • I was a SEAL tech advisor for Hawaii 5-O, Magnum PI and a couple of other shows. (58:44) • Everybody has fear, Team guys have fear. We're not fearless. What we do is that we overcome our fear because we have courage. Courage is not the lack of fear, it's what you do in the face of fear. (62:35) • We're the only operation [Trident Adventures] – I think in the world – that's allowed to have civilians jump out of a helicopter into the ocean or a body of water. (63:28) • I used to love free diving, but I lost most of my lungs when I had the pulmonary embolism, so my breath hold now is embarrassing – maybe 30 seconds. (64:32) • [Marcus] In SEAL teams, we will name something funny like Seal Transport Device (STD). 65:11) • I choose to take my previous chapter of my life, and thru my entrepreneurship and my company and how I conduct myself. Through my integrity and my character I want to be that guy that makes people look at the teams in a higher regard because of how I carry myself. We're back with a new episode with a really fascinating guest - Professor Marc Berman, who runs the Environmental Neuroscience Lab at the University of Chicago, which studies how the physical environment affects the brain and behavior. You've probably heard Marc's name before as he has been one of the go-to experts over the last few years when it comes to understanding how time in nature can improve our cognitive capabilities. This was an interesting chat as Marc came to nature through education, through research with Dr. Steve Kaplan, who specialized in environmental psychology, while he was a student at the University of Michigan. In the episode, we talk about some of the psychological and cognitive benefits of interacting with nature, the difference between voluntary and involuntary attention, the type of natural experiences that are beneficial (spoiler - they can be as simple as your local park) and how some of these benefits can be derived by simply looking at pictures of nature. We also talk about an amazing app that Marc has been working on. If you are a software developer or in the tech world, make sure to listen to the end. In some respects, Steve and Danielle Kaplan seemed a very unlikely couple. He was a free spirit who'd take off alone for weeks at a time on daring motorcycle adventures. She was no daredevil, worked in acute care hospitals, and knew all too well the consequences of a trip gone bad. So, what happened a decade ago? I think you can guess. It's all chronicled in Danielle's new book, "I Married a Thrill-Seeker: A Cautious Wife's Memoir of Her Husband's Risk-Taking and Their Long Road to Recovery." The couple discusses the book and their experiences.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A riveting story of defying all odds, three miracles, and the power of love. Danielle Kaplan is my guest, and we tell her story in three parts. We begin by talking about her roots, a South African growing up in a life of privilege but living with the guilt of apartheid, and why she and her husband came to Canada. The second part is when Danielle Kaplan's thrill-seeking husband, Steve Kaplan, crashes his motorcycle on a solo trip that has taken him from Toronto to a deserted road in the Yukon. Steve is thrown off his bike, breaks his spine, and damages his heart. Hungry Grizzly Bears are nearby. No one knows where he is, and he has zero chance of survival. What happens next is spellbinding and genuinely miraculous. The third part is about how Steve survives the crash, but at the Vancouver General Hospital, his organs begin to shut down. Danielle credits the team there, EMCO, a miracle healthcare invention that took over his heart and lungs until he could get stronger and the healthcare workers who made it all happen. She also reminds us how fortunate we are to have universal health care. And my three takeaways from Danielle Kaplan's sharing excerpts from her book I Married A Thrill-Seeker is how much anxiety thrill seekers create and leave in their wake for their family and friends to almost drown in when they chase their dreams. The second is how important it is to have love, a caregiver and an advocate on your side when you fight back from death's door. And finally, how remarkable Danielle Kaplan is. To provide further context, I invite Amy Deacon, Founder and CEO of Toronto Wellness Counselling, back to Chatter that Matters to talk about how opposites attract, and why some people are addicted to risking all that matters for the chase of a thrill. Late last year, a federal district court ruled that securitization trusts holding student loans might be liable for the alleged unfair and deceptive collection practices of the trusts' servicers. This is the first time that the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has sought to hold a securitization trust liable for acts of its servicers and the first judicial decision addressing the CFPB's argument that such trusts are covered persons subject to the CFPB's UDAAP authority. The decision could have broad-ranging implications not just for this asset class but for the securitization of consumer loans generally. Mayer Brown partners Barbara Goodstein, Ori Lev and Steve Kaplan discuss the background of the case, the court's recent ruling and the potential implications for both primary and secondary market participants in consumer loan securitizations.

Steve Kaplan | Comedy ExpertI've been teaching and lecturing about comedy around the world for years. My first book, The Hidden Tools of Comedy is a best-seller in its field. I've also written, The Comic Hero's Journey: Serious Story Structure for Fabulously Funny Films and am currently working on a third, about writing comedy for television. In addition to having taught at UCLA, NYU, Yale and other universities, I created the HBO Workspace, the HBO New Writers Program and was co-founder and Artistic Director of Manhattan Punch Line Theatre. In addition to development projects for HBO, I've taught taught workshops at companies such as DreamWorks, Disney Animation, Aardman Animation, NBC's Writers on the Verge, and others. There are a number of people who teach screenwriting, but there are few who teach comedy. And most are teaching stand-up or improv. My course is one of the only places to learn about the art and science, the physics and philosophy of comedy: what it is, how it works, WHY it works, what's going on when it DOESN'T work, and what you can do to fix it.Dorothy Parker once described the ability to write comedy as being able to have "a sharp eye, and a wild mind." I'd add the perception to see the absurdities of the world we live in, the courage to include yourself as part of that absurd world, and the ability to share that truth with others. And the occasional bathroom humor.Unlike some, I teach principles, not rigid formulas. My equation for comedy—An ordinary guy (or gal) struggling against insurmountable odds, without many of the required skills and tools with which to win, yet never giving up hope—expresses not so much a formula but rather a metaphor that describes our existence in this world. We're all just ordinary people, struggling to live our lives as best we can without super powers or unlimited resources. The main difference between comedy and drama is how we face that struggle. In comedy, no matter what, there is hope.As metaphor, this perspective invites creativity rather than stifles it, and it allows artists as divergent as Greta Gerwig and Oscar Wilde to still tell tales about human beings struggling to make sense of an absurd world. The best comedies avoid conventional structures—they create their own. Eschewing formula, the best artists hold true to the basic principle of comedy: telling the truth about human beings. In addition to private coaching and one-on-one consultations, Steve has taught his Comedy Intensive workshops to thousands of students around the world, including--in pre-pandemic times--Los Angeles, New York, Australia, Rio, Moscow and Mumbai. Velma's involvement with the Muni began when she encouraged her first husband, Don Bailey, to audition for the first production back at the lake, The Music Man, in 1965. And then as they say, the rest was history. Velma's involvement mainly was backstage, but she did perform onstage in 1968's Oliver and played Abigail Adams in 1972's 1776 opposite her husband's John Adams. Don Bailey directed many Muni productions, and his favorite part was spotting young talent and casting many young people in their first shows, as he did with Steve Kaplan and Paul Presney. Don may not be with us anymore, but his impact on the organization lives on. Want to get involved in this project? Email history@themuni.org

Jennifer Fried, MBA '15, started her MBA at Chicago Booth with dreams of a career in venture capital. By the time she graduated, she had launched a healthcare tech company that helps ensure surgical procedures go smoothly — and today her product is becoming a must-have in operating rooms.Fried, MBA '15, took second place in the Edward L. Kaplan, '71, New Venture Challenge (NVC) with ExplORer Surgical, a digital playbook that helps surgical teams coordinate and communicate during procedures. The Chicago-based company recently closed a $2.5 million round, bringing its total funding to $11 million. In a conversation with Steve Kaplan, her former Booth professor and co-founder of the New Venture Challenge, Fried discusses how she went from having no medical experience to being a healthcare entrepreneur, and how the NVC helped steer her toward a viable concept.“We got destroyed in our pitch presentations,” Fried recalled. “The judges just ripped apart everything we did, and it made us so much stronger as a company to push on our business model and think through the problem and what evidence did we have to show and how could we validate it.”Fried, who left her “dream job” at a VC firm to run the company, reveals the sweat that went into finding the right investors, the challenge of making sales and the hardest part of being the boss. She describes how the company found a foothold by partnering with medical device reps and how the COVID-19 pandemic catapulted her business as hospitals sought ways to go virtual.“I think 2020 was the inflection point for us where we went from, candidly, I think, a nice-to-have product that might've been a little bit ahead of its time to being a must-have product that the entire medical device industry needs and is looking for,” Fried said.
