Vineer Bhansali was recently among a small group of athletes who achieved the unthinkable, a 135 mile run in scorching heat, wind gusts and rain, all while traversing both the lowest and highest elevation points in North America. The Badwater 135 is considered the most difficult Ultra Marathon, an undertaking in which a guiding philosophy is, simply, “don't die”.As the CIO of LongTail Alpha, Vineer's investment philosophy is also not to die – or, translated to markets – don't get forced out at the wrong time. And in this context, he makes substantial use of derivatives, instruments that protect against the extreme events that markets all too often confront. Our conversation is a review of the August 5th risk event, exploring its causes and consequences. Unsurprisingly, Vineer sees the overconsumption of the Yen carry trade as a primary catalyst and he details the many ways in which printed, essentially free Yen made their way into risk assets of all shapes and sizes. He details how his firm navigated the flare-up, looking to trade VIX at incredibly elevated levels before the open. With a view that the market price of insurance has come back to Earth too fast and with concerns that the recent risk-off may just be an appetizer for a larger unwind to come, Vineer argues that embracing insurance strategies is an important part of a long-term strategic portfolio plan.  I hope you enjoy this episode of the Alpha Exchange, my conversation with Vineer Bhansali.

For Isha Bhansali, menswear styling was not part of the plan. Her roots lie in editorial styling. To this extent, she begins each project today with a moodboard – using it as a north star for the looks she curates on the celebrities she works with. Most notable is her work with Ayushman Khurana, whom she's been styling on the regular from the time they began working together. In this episode, Isha talks about her days as an editorial stylist (1:11), how celebrity styling differs from editorial styling (3:50), and how menswear styling happened for her (9:24). Vineer decided to follow the herd. The Fed increased rates, and Vineer kept buying until he lost his investment.LEARNING: Don't follow the herd blindly. Success in the markets is all about timing. Have an investment framework within which you operate. “You've got to be very humble and disciplined with your loss thresholds and risk limits.”Vineer Bhansali Guest profileVineer Bhansali is the CIO of LongTail Alpha. The firm was founded in 2015 to help provide risk mitigation strategies. Vineer was a partner at PIMCO and started their first hedge fund and also started and managed their quantitative investment portfolio teams from 2000-2015.He has a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from Harvard University and has written six books on finance. He has also run over 60 ultramarathons. He is also an Airline Transport Pilot rated to fly jets and helicopters and has over 4,500 hours of flight time.Worst investment everVineer started at Citibank in late 1992, just after the 1987 big stock market crash. He was participating in a bull market created by an extremely easy central bank policy. At that time, probably the easiest trade to do was just to buy anything like fixed income or stocks, and it would go up.Veneer was at some dinner in late 1993, and everybody in that room held a pretty significant long position on the Eurodollar futures contract, betting that interest rates would go down. That should have been a signal that something was amiss. But as a young trader, seeing everything was going up, Veneer also got long Eurodollar futures. Then as a surprise, the Fed got a little worried in February of 1994 and raised interest rates by 25 basis points. The Treasury market started to fall, and Vineer thought it was a good time to buy, so he bought some bond futures contracts. The interest was raised again in March, and the market sank a little bit more. He kept buying more, hoping the rates would soon go down again. Eventually, his trades were blown over, and he lost his investment.Lessons learnedHaving an original idea is always good because you create value by being different.Don't follow a herd blindly.Success in the markets is all about timing.Have an investment framework within which you operate. The markets are very demanding, and to survive, you need to take care of everything about yourself; your mind, your body, and your health.Andrew's takeawaysThe market is a predator.Original ideas create value.Markets are a human construct, and you never know which way they can go.Don't get too hooked on your creative idea because it may not be time right for it.Have an investment framework and follow it.Vineer's recommendationsThere's a lot of stuff that's on Vineer's website that can help with risk management. Her report is the sixth in the series of TEAIN22 year-end reviews and forecasts.  | Reorganizing and Reinvigorating India's Tea Sector – India's tea industry in 2021 recovered from severe setbacks due to the pandemic. Production totals rebounded in 2021 but exports lagged as global prices fell and logistics costs soared. A shortage of containers led to high freight costs. Export volume declined to a five-year low of fewer than 200 million kilos. Kenya undercut prices at auction for commodity black teas. Based on the chapters from Hussain Zaidi's book Mafia Queens of Mumbai, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi creates a world of its own that's sleazy violent, reckless but still overflowing with emotions. Starring Alis Bhatt in the titular role, the films shows the lanes of Kamathipura, one of the oldest red-light districts of Mumbai, and Bhansali captures them in the most extravagant way. The first half narrates Gangubai's story from being a barrister's daughter Ganga who was forced into sex trade and how she becomes Gangu with her shares of bruises and scars, the second half shows her rise as a 'gharwali' (Madame of a brothel) and eventually fighting the elections to be the president of Kamathipura. Alia delivers a superlative performance with her near perfect diction, dialect, expressions and how she emotes anger, rage, happiness and helplessness.

She also discusses how she's completely changed the game being a feminist, talks about not giving in to play small parts to her male counterparts. In fact, she reveals she rejected Ranbir Kapoor starrer Sanju, Salman Khan's Sultan after which Aditya Chopra apparently told her that he 'would never work with her'. Not just that, she also talks about a film with Bhansali co-starring Shah Rukh Khan that couldn't take off and why she dreams of playing Madhubala with Aamir Khan essaying the role of Dilip Kumar. Vineer’s insights on the manner in which the system of risk taking may now be set to interact with the economic fundamentals in a negatively reinforcing manner is critical to appreciate.  Thank you for listening

In the current market cycle dating from 2009 coming out of the great financial crisis: - Equities dominated bonds and commodities. - The U.S. trumped international. - Growth outpaced value. - And large U.S. tech companies dominated just about every sector and security. As in previous bull market periods, money flows to the best performers and flees the laggards. This record-setting U.S. bull market has also accentuated the attraction of index investing, as mutual funds and ETFs based on the S&P 500, in particular, have been among the decade’s stars. However, [Asim](http://www.twitter.com/asimburney), [Sujoy](https://twitter.com/9e3k) and [Amrita](https://twitter.com/Amritaiq) begin the podcast with a raucous discussion of Salman’s latest blockbuster, (the widely and justifiably reviled) Race 3. A bro-laden movie so terrible, it drives Salman-lover Asim into enraged incoherence while Sujoy and Amrita try not to die laughing. Please excuse the f-bombs in this family-friendly podcast. Tired out from all the emotion, we examine Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s debut feature: a sensitive depiction of a tragedy-magnet family. Featuring several themes Bhansali would go on to explore with better budgets, Khamoshi nevertheless manages to retain some of its charm at this long distance of 24 years. The songs have withstood the test of time and the performances are better than any of us expected. Amrita, however, maintains her irrational dislike of Manisha. In Episode 82, we welcome trader, fund manager, and author, Vineer Bhansali. Per usual, we start with Vineer’s backstory. It involves his physicist-origins, an unexpected move to an assortment of trading desks, and a run-in with the great, Fischer Black. Meb soon dives in, asking about main strategies Vineer uses with his group, Longtail Alpha. Meb reads a quote from LongTail’s website… “LongTail Alpha’s sole focus is to find value in the tails of financial asset return distributions. Either in the left tail as a risk mitigation hedge on multi-asset portfolios, in the right tail to add convexity to an investor’s risk exposures, or in both the right and left tails to produce alpha from convexity and volatility opportunities in a hedge fund structure.” Meb asks Vineer to use this as a jumping off point, explaining his framework, and how he thinks about tail strategies. Vineer tells us that, at LongTail, they believe the probability distribution of returns for asset classes and multi-asset portfolios is actually not bell-shaped. Rather, there are many imperfections and anomalies in the market. And the tails of the distribution are quite different than the central part. While the central part of the curve tends to have many, smaller moves, the tails tend to be dominated by infrequent, large events. With this in mind, the goal is to implement various options strategies to help you position yourself for these tail vents. Keep in mind, there are left tail and right tail events (and a hedged strategy in the middle). Vineer references them all. Meb mentions how, right now, most investors are more concerned with the left tail events. So how should an investor think about implementing a tail strategy? And is it even necessary, given Vineer’s statement in a recent Forbes article: “…people generally feel better when they believe that they have portfolios with built-in insurance, i.e. protection against losses, even though the expectation (or average return) of a portfolio with or without such insurance is the same.”    Vineer discusses the difference between “volatility” and “permanent loss of capital.” What you want from a left-tail paradigm is a methodology that keeps you in assets, serving your long-term benefit. Generally, you want to be invested in the stock market. Vineer tells us the name of the game is to be able to survive the relatively short-but-harsh pullbacks, and even accumulate more assets during those times. Given this, Vineer has a 4-lever framework he uses to help create a robust left-side portfolio. You won’t want to miss this part of the discussion. As the conversation unfolds, you’ll hear the guys discuss how, even though there is some concern about a correction now, the markets are still severely undervaluing the price of a sharp downturn. And option premia are incredibly cheap by historical standards. Meb then asks for more details about actually implementing a left tail strategy. Vineer’s answer touches on understanding and identifying how much exposure one wants to equity risk and inflation risk. Then, there’s the need to understand one’s risk threshold tolerance – the “attachment point” at which you cry uncle, whether that’s being down 10%, 15%, 25% or more. Given this attachment point, an investor could then go to the options market and buy “insurance” at this level, for a duration of time suitable to the investor.  This leads Meb to wonder why people think of portfolio insurance differently than life, car, or home insurance. We all pay those insurance premiums without thinking much about it, but there’s so much resistance to paying for portfolio insurance. Vineer actually wrote a paper on this challenge. He tells us part of the issue is an aggregation, disaggregation problem. The right thing to do would be to lump the cost of insurance into the portfolio and look at the overall portfolio returns. But people fixate on the “lost” cost of insurance when option premiums expire worthless. Next up, the guys discuss the current volatility environment. Vineer address two questions from Meb: “why is volatility so low?” And “is there a sweet spot on the option scale (how far out of the money) for investors looking to purchase portfolio protection?” There’s way more in this episode: option selling strategies (instead of buying insurance, you’re the one selling it in order to generate yield)… A great piece from Vineer about selling bonds as a way to hedge your portfolio… How the traditional inverse relationship between market direction and volatility might not be holding up as much (look at Japan recently – surging markets and volatility together)… Vineer’s thoughts on artificial intelligence and “how to beat the machines”… And of course, his most memorable trade. All this and more in Episode 82.

Today on Trend Following Radio Michael Covel speaks with Vineer Bhansali. It is Vineer’s second appearance on the show. He brings a world of experience to the subjects of behavioral finance and tail investing strategies. He believes strongly that sustained portfolio performance comes from expecting the unexpected and hedging both left and right sides of tail risks. Vineer’s firm, Long Tail Alpha, is based on exploiting values from the tails of the probability distribution and also exploiting how human behavior distorts the markets.Michael starts the podcast off breaking apart Vineer’s white paper, “A Behavioral Perspective on Tail Risk Hedging.” Vineer says the way markets actually trade have very little to do with the idealized models that have been presented in the academic community. Those models are presented because they are easy to solve. All interesting things that go on in the markets are beyond the idealized scenarios. Vineer talks Michael through the idea of the “Three Investors.” His study is based on how people account for gains and losses. The study concluded that people are more adverse to losses than they are to gains, also people like security. Next, Vineer speaks to work done by Kahneman and Tversky that dovetails into his own studies. This work allows him to rationally explain the existence of tails in terms of very persistent behavioral biases.Michael and Vineer comment on oil and how significant the price of oil has been in the last few years. Where does the behavioral aspects come into play? He says that both kinds of investors, rational and irrational, create market dynamics. He gives an example of a gambler that leaves the casino while he is up a lot, as opposed to the gambler that is down and keeps gambling trying to get it back. “You have people in this commodity market casino who are going in with a certain plan, but they can not execute on that plan.” He goes on to say that people who have a trend following plan are going to do very well. They can go short or long. Their portfolio’s tend to be more dynamic, and unless you know a whole portfolio you cannot make a rational decision. Michael says aggregation is the key word. You can’t look at a price for a hedge in isolation. That doesn’t do anything for anyone.Michael then asks “What about the timing in Tail Risk?” Vineer says you have to be very open minded in how you construct a portfolio, and the timing relates back to the valuation. These concepts are well known in the finance world, they are just not widely practiced. Tail risk, hedging or insurance is what investing is all about. Michael ends with asking, “We all know everything we know about Oil, China and Rates could go in another direction. What will happen if your thesis doesn’t materialize? If things bounce back to the way they were?” Vineer says that at some point markets overshoot and his firm is set up for when that happens. He is always asking himself, “Where is the valuation? What signals are you getting? What objective framework and model can you build?” In this episode of Trend Following Radio: Is trend following mean reverting? Tail risks Tail hedges Human behavior and biases Importance of a dynamic portfolio
