Soter is a Portland, Oregon, native who began his remarkable 40-year winemaking career in the Napa Valley. After graduating from Pomono College in southern California with a degree in philosophy, Soter joined the staff at Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in 1975 to learn the trade. By 1982, he released his own wine under the Etude label, selling the winery almost 20 years later. In the meantime, Soter worked as consulting winemaker for such world-famous Napa estates as Araujo (now Eisele), Chappellet, Dalla Valle, Shafer, and Spottswoode, among others. After almost 30 years in California, Soter moved back to Oregon and founded Soter Vineyards in 1997, where he is still making some of the most heralded pinot noirs in the state.InfoSoter Vineyardshttps://www.sotervineyards.com/Come see The Restaurant Guys LIVE with Chef Scott Conant at the New Brunswick Performing Arts Center on Thursday, April 17! Gus Clemens on Wine explores and explains the world of wine in simple, humorous, fun posts

This is the weekly columnThanksgiving is the great American gastronomic holiday. Halloween is for foolishness, costumes, and candy. Christmas is for worship, family, and unseemly lust for gaudily wrapped material goods (somewhat antithetical to the Christian origin of the holiday).Thanksgiving is the quintessential harvest feast. Turkey and ham and cranberry sauce and corn on the cob and cornbread and pumpkin pie and whatever else you can conjure up from the cornucopia of agricultural abundance the good Lord bestows on American tables. The wine: pinot noir. I know arguments can be made for zinfandel and Bordeaux blends (American Bordeaux blends), even some whites and rosés. All well and good and maybe part of the groaning Thanksgiving sideboard of excess of everything. But if you want one wine for this bacchanalian extravaganza, it is pinot noir.Pinot is among the lightest of the red wines. It thus works well with a wide array of foods you conjure up for your Thanksgiving feast. It is especially suited for turkey, goes very well with ham. The stronger California versions of pinot can hang with slow-cooked brisket. It especially is nice for family members put off by tannic, assertive red wines. Thanksgiving is a meal of comity and convaiviality. Pinot noir encourages that.Pinot noir is a famously fickle grape, also one of the oldest varieties used for winemaking. The Catholic church was critical to its development beginning in monastery vineyards in the 6th century, then specifically named in the early 1300s. It spread to Germany as spätburgunder and in Italy as pinot nero. France's Burgundy region is the cathedral of pinot noir, but California's Russian River Valley and Oregon's Willamette Valley now produce some of the world's best pinots.Pinot noir is a challenging grape due to its thin skin—thus its reserved tannins—and susceptibility to various viticulture challenges. It is called the “heartbreak grape” for a reason, which means pinot noir can be expensive. It also is worth it for your biggest gastronomic celebration of the year.Tasting notes• Project M Wines Personify Oregon Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley AVA 2022: Delicate, silky on initial attack, rising to power, complexity later in the palate. $40 Link to my review• Dobbes Family Estate Eola-Amity Hills Cuvée Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley 2021: Excellent fruit effort. Nice tang, clean, precise, complexity, length. $45 Link to my review• Soter Vineyards Estates Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley, Oregon 2021: Juicy, concentrated flavors. Plush, complex, elegant, impressive structure, length. Warm vintage well played by Soter, producing a more assertive pinot noir that you anticipate from Willamette. $55-63 Link to my reviewLast roundWhat did the farmer say when he accidentally squashed his pumpkin? The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman
Are the kids all right? Vermont high school students speak out

The Vermont Conversation with David Goodman

Are the kids all right? This question is foremost on the mind of parents, educators, and young people themselves. Students today are still grappling with the lingering effects of the covid pandemic, during which their schools closed and their education continued alone — or in many cases, their education and development stalled. Significant covid-related learning gaps continue to pose a challenge for many students. As graduation and summer approaches, the Vermont Conversation wanted to hear from students in their own words about their lives, concerns and challenges. We spoke with four high students from around Vermont, all of whom volunteer with Up for Learning, a nonprofit that brings together youth and adults to transform education with a focus on equity and justice. The student guests are: Auishma Pradhan, a junior at South Burlington High School who is a member of the Winooski Antiracism Steering Committee; Harmony Devoe, a freshman at Harwood Union High School, who was recently named Vermont's first Youth Poet Laureate; Jacoby Soter, a sophomore at Bellows Free Academy in St. Albans who is a student member of the Maple Run School Board; and Mea Ree Jan, a junior at Winooski High School and the Center for Technology at Essex who is also a member of the Winooski Antiracism Steering Committee. The students made clear that the problems of the world do not stop at the school house. Failed school budgets, racism, and Israel's war in Gaza were top of mind for many of them. Soter said the effects of covid on learning “is honestly much bigger than the actual covid crisis that was two years long. We're going to be feeling this for the next 10 years.” He said he sees a “disconnect between (students) that were that were able to have people in the house and help them with covid learning and everyone else. …There are a few kids who are really thriving and excelling socially, emotionally and in their academic career, and then there is everyone else who is really far behind.” Among the problems Soter sees are an increase in vaping and substance abuse that contribute to “behavioral problems inside school and many students not feeling safe around their peers because of those behavioral problems.” Auishma Pradhan said that she is deeply concerned about and affected by Israel-Gaza war. “This is the type of education that should be taught in school where it's very immediate and it's happening right now.” She said that “students would want to know about" it. "It's not okay.” “We should be able to show support,” she added. Mea Ree Jan agreed and said that she empathized with suffering Palestinians. She noted that her family “comes from a long history of ethnic cleansing from Myanmar.” She is now studying health care and hopes to work with a group like Doctors Without Borders. “I would like to be able to directly help.” Several of the students attend schools that have had their budgets voted down multiple times. Soter said that people are protesting rising taxes by voting against school budgets but “it only affects students because people in Montpelier, they don't take those no's as negatively as the students do.” Vermont Youth Poet Laureate Harmony Devoe read one of her poems. “It's about being Asian and being proud of my heritage,” she explained. “I wrote it when there were a lot of Asian hate times in the news. And that just affected me mentally.” Almond EyesBy Harmony Belle DevoeYou are born And into this life ofAlmond eyesCaramel skinDark chocolate hairA trifle of colorYou growAnd into this life ofSwitching of tongueBeads of phrases strung“Where are you really from?”You hear of gunshotsIn the streetsAdzuki bean sweetsThe surrenders and defeatsBow down to the white man's feetThey gave you your life Now you pretendYou don't feel the cuts of the knifeThey colonize their Asian wivesNow we riseThey must do more than just apologizeTheir wrongs will never be rightsWe realizeWe must fight for these rightsWe descend Like the godsAnd we growLike the cherry treeWe dissent We're not robotsAnd we knowWe cannot be controlledWe dieAnd from this life ofAlmond eyesCaramel skinDarkest chocolate hairWe leave Our legacy;Be proud Of your Asian heritageWe will build the bridgeYou will tread itMight have to mend itMentallyBut eventually, This will beOur legacyI stand in my Asian soulFullOf the foods and smells of the kitchenKare-kareScallionsHalo-haloPerfumeGolden sun medallionsSesame oilWe toil EndlesslyRelentlesslyFor the Western's greedNowFor equity, equality, and peaceI stand in my Asian soulMy head held highMy almond eyes

And Jesus came into the quarters of Caesarea Philippi: and he asked his disciples, saying: Whom do men say that the Son of man is?Venit autem Jesus in partes Caesareae Philippi : et interrogabat discipulos suos, dicens : Quem dicunt homines esse Filium hominis?  14 But they said: Some John the Baptist, and other some Elias, and others Jeremias, or one of the prophets. At illi dixerunt : Alii Joannem Baptistam, alii autem Eliam, alii vero Jeremiam, aut unum ex prophetis.  15 Jesus saith to them: But whom do you say that I am?Dicit illis Jesus : Vos autem, quem me esse dicitis?  16 Simon Peter answered and said: Thou art Christ, the Son of the living God.Respondens Simon Petrus dixit : Tu es Christus, Filius Dei vivi.  17 And Jesus answering, said to him: Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven.Respondens autem Jesus, dixit ei : Beatus es Simon Bar Jona : quia caro et sanguis non revelavit tibi, sed Pater meus, qui in caelis est.  18 And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.Et ego dico tibi, quia tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram aedificabo Ecclesiam meam, et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam.  19 And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose upon earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven.Et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum. Et quodcumque ligaveris super terram, erit ligatum et in caelis : et quodcumque solveris super terram, erit solutum et in caelis. St Soter was martyred in the second century under Marcus Aurelius A.D. 174, and St Caius was put to death A.D. 296.

featured Wiki of the Day

fWotD Episode 2509: Attalus I Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Monday, 18 March 2024 is Attalus I.Attalus I (Ancient Greek: Ἄτταλος), surnamed Soter (Greek: Σωτήρ, "Savior"; 269–197 BC) was the ruler of the Ionian Greek polis of Pergamon (modern-day Bergama, Turkey) and the larger Pergamene Kingdom from 241 BC to 197 BC. He was the adopted son of King Eumenes I, whom he succeeded, and was the first of the Attalid dynasty to assume the title of king, sometime around 240 to 235 BC. He was the son of Attalus and his wife Antiochis.Attalus won an important victory, the Battle of the Caecus River, over the Galatians, a group of migratory Celtic tribes from Thrace, who had been plundering and exacting tribute throughout most of Asia Minor for more than a generation. The victory was celebrated with a triumphal monument at Pergamon (The Dying Gaul) and Attalus taking the name of "Soter" and the title of king. He participated in the first and second Macedonian Wars against Philip V of Macedon as a loyal ally of the Roman Republic, although Pergamene participation was ultimately rather minor in these wars. He conducted numerous naval operations throughout the Aegean, gained the island of Aegina for Pergamon during the first war and Andros during the second, twice narrowly escaping capture at the hands of Philip V. During his reign, Pergamon also repeatedly struggled with the neighboring Seleucid Empire to the east, resulting in both successes and setbacks.Attalus styled himself as a protector of the freedoms of the Greek cities of Anatolia and portrayed himself as the champion of Greeks against barbarians. He funded art and monuments in Pergamon and in Greek cities he sought to cultivate as allies. He died in 197 BC at the age of 72, shortly before the end of the second war, having suffered an apparent stroke while addressing a Boeotian war council some months before. He and his wife Apollonis were admired for their rearing of their four sons. He was succeeded as king by his son Eumenes II.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:55 UTC on Monday, 18 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Attalus I on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Arthur Neural.

"The new thinking is around circularity. The idea of circularity is the circulation of materials at their highest value for the longest period of time.  And when you design with circular systems in mind, you are thinking about the end at the beginning, meaning what's going to happen to this product that we're making? What's going to happen to this house that we're designing at the end of life? Can any of these things be reused again? Can they be made into something else? Can you take and use... send the furniture back to the manufacturer and they'll repair it or even keep it and resell it to somebody else.  There are companies that do that. " - Kathryn Soter About a year ago, I interviewed Katie Story, a founder of Good Future Design Alliance, which she created to educate the professionals in the building and designing industry to reduce the massive waste this industry generates forging a radical new path in the world of design.  The new executive director, Kathryn Soter, gives us the update on the organization's missions as well as some practical tips when designing, redesigning and renovating homes or even when we need to replace a piece of furniture to help reduce waste.  Construction and demolition waste is a massive problem, with 500 million tons generated annually in the US alone. This is equivalent to 100 Great Pyramids of Giza per year. There are major health impacts from construction waste, including landfill pollution, emissions, and plastic waste. GFDA aims to connect and educate interior designers, architects, contractors, and manufacturers to adopt low-waste practices. Homeowners should plan carefully, salvage and reuse materials, and hire trained professionals to reduce waste. Resources mentioned: Chairish Renovation Angel Rheaply FirstDib

FlySense 286 Product Suite includes 4G/LTE, LoRaWAN, and YoLink capabilities to address worldwide connectivity and security needs Recently, Soter Technologies, a leading provider of innovative environmental sensor and software technologies, today released its FlySense 286 product suite incorporating expanded wireless network connectivity options. Addressing the needs of schools and enterprises around the world, FlySense is the first vape and bullying sensor in the market with embedded global cellular (4G/LTE), LoRaWAN, or YoLink support. In this podcast, Derek Peterson, chief executive officer of Soter, discusses how FlySense 286 not only delivers needed detection of vaping in places and spaces where vaping is strictly prohibited, Soter's innovations sets the product independent of the organization's network. Many organizations follow cybersecurity best practices or mandates to minimize the variety of devices attached to a network that also carries proprietary or private information such as email, browsing, cloud connections, and server access. Operating FlySense devices over wide area networks such as cellular or LoRaWAN, and alternative local networks using YoLink, provides this physical separation without raising concerns about any cybersecurity risks. “We're excited about our product roadmap,” adds Peterson, pointing out several verticals including education (school campus and facility), food service (including making detecting employee vaping), hospitality and more. We learn that selling and installation are “easy peasy”, and that the product line is makes for a ready sell for channel partners. Visit Soter Technologies

Music: Victim pascali laudes

Background • Pergamum was the seat for the Roman Governor for the region. So, if Ephesus was like New York (Financial and commerce center), Pergamum would be like Washington DC (governing and legal center). • They had the 2nd largest library at the time (Alexandria had the largest) • In 29 AD Pergamum was the very first city to erect a temple to a Caesar (Augustus) • Those in Pergamum also worshipped the god Asclepius, who was a healing God in the form of a serpent. They also were the center for medical practice. This God's temple had a medical spa connected to it and a 3500-seat amphitheater for musical therapy. o Asclepius was given the title Soter (savior)for his “healing power”. This would have put early Christians at odds with this cult claiming Jesus was the healer and savior. • On the highest peak of the hillside around Pergamum was the temple to Zeus. It had a huge altar that looked like a throne. Smoke would rise day and night from the temple from the sacrifices being made. • On another hilltop near Zeus' temple was Athena's temple the goddess of victory. • As well there was a massive temple to the god Serapis who was also a god of healing. Today this temple is known as Red Basilica. It contained a massive 30-foot statue that the priest could make “talk” by entering the base and speaking through a pipe. NT Wright describes the impact this environment might have had on the church in Pergamum: “Many local inhabitants in the first century must have been proud of all of this. But for the little Christian community it represented a threat- and a threat with which, it seemed, the Christians were not coping particularly well.” All of these temples, smoke, talking idols, altars and more must have seemed overwhelming and intimidating to the believers here. It's no wonder Jesus describes Pergamum as the place where Satan dwells. Not only was it the governing center for the imperial cult but also a major center for false worship and some of the Christians are struggling to maintain a faithful witness in this culture. Revelation 2:12-17 Description of Jesus (v12) Antipas the Faithful Witness (V13) Balaam/Nicolaitans (v14, 15) Call to Repent (v16) Reward: Hidden manna and New name (v17) Conclusions: How to apply this to the Church today

“Our first main goal was to keep people safe,” says Derek Peterson, Chief Executive Officer, Soter Technologies. In this podcast we learn how Soter Technologies is taking a fresh take on security and sensors, with products that detect bullying occurring on a school campus, the use of e-cigarettes or tobacco products, whether internal environmental conditions are safe for workers in an office building. Soter's products can summon the HVAC system to ionize the air after particulate matter indicates the presence of pathogens. Peterson argues that employers, school boards, anybody managing an office building, or a campus need to bring management real-time awareness to a new level, moving beyond traditional security measures such as motion detectors and perimeter devices. Soter offers MSPs a fresh take on security and building a robust portfolio. In this case the MSP can pick up revenue for the sale of the product, the product's maintenance, and installation, not to mention on going recurring income. We learn that the company will soon be releasing related solutions that will take these measures to a new level. “We're giving the MSP something unique to sell,” adds Peterson.

Francis, who is 85 years old, has been suffering from pain in his right knee, causing him to take smaller roles in some Vatican liturgies and to remain seated more often. The pope's movements have been visibly more limited since the start of the year. Pope Francis has also received more assistance walking and going up and down stairs in recent weeks. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251035/pope-francis-agenda-canceled-for-needed-medical-checkups Pope Francis met with a delegation of Metis Indigenous people from Manitoba, Canada on Thursday. Plans for a previous visit were canceled in 2021 amid reports of possible undiscovered graves at the sites of residential schools, run by Catholic and Protestant groups and funded by the government with the goal of forcibly assimilating Indigenous people. On April 1 of this year Pope Francis voiced his “indignation and shame” at the treatment of the Indigenous people and asked forgiveness. He is expected to visit Canada this July to meet with residential school survivors. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/251033/more-indigenous-canadians-meet-with-pope-francis-amid-talk-of-papal-visit Today the Church celebrates Saints Cauis and Soter, Popes of the early Church, who are both venerated in tradition as martyrs, though no reliable account of their martyrdom survives today. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/saint/sts-caius-and-soter-449

Today on Soundtracker it's time to dig into Wes Anderson's films, and I'm staring with RUSHMORE. Joining me is Broken Lizard's Paul Soter (SUPER TROOPERS, CLUB DREAD, WATCHING THE DETECTIVES, among others) who brings an inside perspective on the process of how songs end up in films, and how some don't. We also discuss Coconut Pete, get some very charming Brian Cox anecdotes, talk about our upcoming Faygo/chewing tobacco podcast, and, as always, talk about the film and the soundtrack. Hopefully this episode just made your list of things to do today. You can find Paul on Twitter at @PaulSoterTacoma F.D. is streaming on HBO Max but can also be found here: https://www.trutv.com/shows/tacoma-fdWatching the Detectives can be found here: https://watch.amazon.com/detail?gti=amzn1.dv.gti.48b5c203-b933-10c1-db9c-500e00d3c7e2&ref_=atv_dp_share_mv&r=web
