Today on the show we have director, writer, comedian, and actor Jay Chandrasekhar has contributed to and appeared in a wide variety of critically acclaimed television programs and films throughout his career.Chandrasekhar assembled the sketch comedy troupe Broken Lizard, which includes Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske. Together they performed comedy across the nation until they set their sights on producing television and feature films.Under his Broken Lizard banner, Jay directed and co-wrote Fox Searchlight Picture's comedy cult classics Super Troopers, Super Troopers 2, Club Dread, and Warner Bros' Beerfest. He also directed the Broken Lizard comedy special, Broken Lizard Stands Up.Super Troopers hit theaters in February 2002 and went on to gross $23 million with glowing audience reviews (and $80 million on home video.)Jay continued on to direct The Dukes of Hazard, direct and star in Millennium Entertainment's The Babymakers, and appear in DreamWorks' comedy hit, I Love You, Man. It's call Vouch Vault."When my film, Super Troopers, showed at Sundance, it played to big laughing crowds. But when it was released to the public, the reviews were only so-so. On Rotten Tomatoes, Super Troopers, got a 38%-fresh aggregate score from less than a hundred reviewers. With the public, though, the film garnered a 90% fresh rating from more than 250,000 non-reviewers. This 38% reviewer-number stuck in my craw. I remember thinking, “Who are these reviewers, these strangers with outsized power, and why are we listening to them? Seriously. This week John''s Chugging Maple Syrup and Mark's the Rookie Biotch with 2001's Super Troopers. --- Super Troopers is a 2001 American comedy film directed by Jay Chandrasekhar and written by and starring the Broken Lizard comedy group (Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter and Erik Stolhanske). Marisa Coughlan, Daniel von Bargen and Brian Cox co-star while Lynda Carter has a cameo appearance. In total, Fox Searchlight paid $3.25 million for distribution rights of the film and it grossed $23 million at the box office.

Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Jay Chandraskhar and Kevin Heffernan of Super Troopers 2. It's no coincidence that this film is being released on 4/20! It's been 17 years since the original Super Troopers film was released but the original gang is back: Jay Chandraskhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erik Stolhanske aka The Broken Lizard Comedy Team. These guys wrote and starred in the first one and are back on double duty for the second as well. Jay Chandraskhar is actually a triple threat as he is also back in the directors chair! This time around the story line is as current as it could be: "After an international border dispute arises between U.S. and Canada, five wacky state troopers set up a new highway patrol station in the disputed area of Canada." There are some big names appearing this time around including Lynda Carter, Rob Lowe, Fred Savage, Jim Gaffigan, Brian Cox, and Emmanuelle Chriqui from Entourage!
Two weeks ago, the guys from Broken Lizard came to Boston to hand out doughnuts and coffee to a bunch of appreciative fans to promote their new movie, Super Troopers 2, which is out this Friday, April 20. The guys were there for nearly two hours, taking pictures with fans and signing everything from DVDs and beat up old VHS copies of the original film to baseballs and bottles of maple syrup. When that was winding down, I got to speak with Erik Stolhanske and Steve Lemme about the sequel, and the legacy of the original film. What added an extra level of fun to this was that sixteen years earlier, I had covered the troupe when they originally previewed Super Troopers in Boston. I interviewed them back then on their tour bus – Boston was the 18th stop on their college tour. I reminded them of that, and they had a couple of memories of their trip here. I dug up that tape, so after the most recent interview, you'll get a couple snippets of Broken Lizard from February of 2002. It is an actual cassette tape, so I had to clean it up, but there is a bit of tape noise leftover.
