Interview with Kara Kalin, RCC, EMDR. In this episode we dive deep into the trauma that is associated with infertility, IVF, miscarriage, stillbirth, and as well as birth itself. These traumas plant fear, sometimes to the point of paralysis, making life and the struggles at hand seem impossible to overcome. The idea that trauma from your past may also be playing into your current challenges and traumas should not only be considered, but worked through with someone who has the right tools. Kara uses EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) to help people process their trauma without having to talk about it. "In the realm of infertility many come to you already experiencing great loss in many contexts so what if we got curious about how we could treat that before the IVF journey begins?? The internalized belief systems that are connected to the small or big t traumas are held in the body. We can spend all this money trying to get our body pregnant and still not see how the mental-emotional part is actually a major factor. The AIP model according to Shapiro is clear that we cannot “out talk” trauma… so talk therapy can actually re traumatize a person. This is an important element to understand, and why EMDR is such a great tool." For anyone facing challenges trying to conceive it doesn't take long to understand the basic biology behind the mechanism of how stress can negatively impact fertility. In summary, the physiology of any animal in distress results in the same end: the valuable resources intended to nourish and strengthen the reproductive system are allocated to vital organs for survival (heart, lungs, brain, muscles), leaving fertility function deficient. This impacts egg quality, ovulation, and uterine receptivity. Then starts the search for ideas, tips and tricks, techniques and lifestyle choices, treatments and therapies that may deliver on the promise of reducing stress, therefore improving fertility. This inevitably leads all people to the vast blossoming world of holistic medicine and healing, a necessary component not only to a successful fertility journey, but a life of health, well-being, and limitless potential, fully realized. Today, we focus on what I believe to be one of the most important elements in any persons lifetime if they want to achieve their dreams, whatever they are; meditation. If you are one of the many who may be saying to themselves; “I've tried meditating, it was hard” or “it didn't work for me” or “I don't have time” then today is your lucky day! By the end of this article you will see meditation in a new light, easy to integrate into your life, easy to do, and a knowing that it is something you just cannot live without, especially if you are faced with a challenge such as infertility. Observation includes medical testing, self-assessment, technology to track your health, traditional Chinese medicine, and some other assessment tools. This is the first step in your infertility journey. It usually you usually start coming across, well, how do I know what's going on? And you want to answer to specific questions about yourself as to what may be between you and your ability to get pregnant. In my eyes, the first step in applying precise medicine to your individual needs is this step is starting to observe. Starting to do the testing self qualification and quantification are essential to moving forward most effectively and efficiently. I said "if you don't specialize, you won't specialize:". If I you want to know a lot about something then you have to put your heart and soul into learning everything you can. So I did. Taking over ABORM after the death of the founder was a huge challenge. I was honored that Ray knew I could do it based on my business degree/experience and success running my own clinic, but to do and do it well during a time of grieving by a membership that respected him was uniquely challenging . There were a lot of sleepless nights and stressful days feeling the pressure to ensure the organization survived. My leadership skills just instinctively took over and I developed a foundational structure for the organization that hadn't existed before so that it could withstand the current team and time. I am honored that at this point in my career I have been asked to share some of my knowledge and wisdom with others. I have been asked to speak again at TCM Kongress for the 3rd time next year, recently spoke at the Evidence Based Acupuncture Symposium to help spread awareness of the research surrounding our profession and just completed writing an article in the Journal of Chinese Medicine on Unexplained Infertility that was a rewarding experience. I am passionate about our medicine and its ability to help fertility patients and love being a conduit, spreading the word in any way possible whether speaking to groups of patients or practitioners. Interview with Alice (Ally) Domar & Elizabeth (Liz) Grill The psychological journey through infertility for a man is a lonely confusing one. Most men recoil due to ignorance or ego, and the ones that try to step in and play active role do so with little support or understanding of how to 'be' with their wife through this difficult time. Well, Ally and Liz have gone to great lengths to try and remedy this situation. They have planted the seed and now it is all of our turn to help 'fertilize' the male mental-emotional side of modern reproduction. ~ Spence Email domar@domarcenter.com lizgrill@yahoo.com Websites ferticalm.com fertistrong.com ALICE DOMAR Professional Profile 1980 BA Colby College, Waterville Maine 1986 MA and Ph.D in Health Psychology, Yeshiva University, New York NY 1987 Massachusetts clinical psychologist license Author or co-author of seven books including Conquering Infertility Co-founder of the new apps FertiCalm and FertiStrong Leading expert on the relationship between stress and infertility Board Member for Resolve: The National Infertility Organization, 2006-2016 Currently Executive Director, Domar Centers for Mind/Body Health Director of Integrative Care at Boston IVF Senior Staff Psychologist, Dept of Ob/Gyn, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Biology, part-time, Harvard Medical School ELIZABETH GRILL Professional Profile Director of Psychological Services at the Ronald O.
