From Sparks to Light - Inspiring Stories for Challenging Times
A month ago I had the opportunity to talk to Dan Mullins, a Sydney-based singer/songwriter, broadcaster, podcaster and writer. Dan is the host of My Camino, an Australian based podcast that is heard around the world.Having walked two Caminos, with another one in the planning stages, I can honestly say that we Camino veterans are an unusual sort. The Camino family is strong. There's a kind of psychic energy that seems to draw us together, even years after we've made our journey. It's an experience that never leaves you, as the multitude of podcasts and books testify to. At the same time, the import of that journey seems to take on new meaning as we find ourselves reliving those steps when we find ourselves in the company of other pilgrims. It's a yearning we all hold, as Dan says, ~ to find what we're looking for.Dan is a veteran radio producer, having worked on the Alan Jones Show - the number one program in Sydney - for more than 16 years. As a musician, he was signed with Sony Publishing in the 1990s, toured the world and Australia with acts like Bryan Ferry, Desiree, Michelle Shocked, Stephen Cummings, Violent Femmes, Hothouse Flowers and The Church.Dan still performs 80 shows a year - he's a storyteller, a six-string troubador with soaring vocals and lilting melodies. He's played thousands of gigs, non-stop weekend after weekend, year after year, plying his trade in pubs and clubs the length and breadth of the country.Dan wrote the single, Somewhere Along the Way (the Camino Song) after walking in the footsteps of millions of pilgrims before him on the Camino de Santiago. It can be found on his album, Duende. This weekend I'll have the opportunity to share Camino stories with the audience of Occidental Center for the Arts, in Occidental California. If you're in the area, please stop by. You can find the information on my website. I am so grateful to Dan Mullins for having me. I hope you enjoy our conversation. To learn more about Robert Maggio, the composer of our theme music, please check out his website. To learn more about Suzanne, visit her website. Join us, and Prof. Stephen Cummings, for Part 2 of this discussion on Lewin's classic article. Many working in the change management arena–scholars and practitioners alike–have likely heard of Kurt Lewin’s three main phases of organizational change: (1) unfreezing, (2) moving, and (3) freezing (also commonly referred to as re-freezing). And indeed, Kurt Lewin presented those phases in his 1947 article “Frontiers in group dynamics: Concept, method and reality in social science; social equilibria and social change.” But as explained by our special guest Stephen Cummings from the University of Wellington, New Zealand, this three-phased approach was not actually an important finding or outcome of the article. Without offering any empirical support or developing much detail into the phases, Lewin was simply offering ideas for further exploration. Yet these phases have been adapted into numerous change management models available in business literature.

Peter is a great storyteller (as well as a world-class drummer), who's been part of a string of iconic Aussie bands spanning several decades. In his early days he worked at a pickle factory and a bank, with the latter resulting in him being sacked for a 'bad attitude'. Peter threw himself into music lessons at the insistence of his father. Fast forward three years and he realised that everything he'd ever learned, he needed to un-learn if he was ever to be accepted into the world of rock. Peter admits to some shallowness in his motivation play in rock bands, saying "I wanted someone to set up my drums for me. And I wanted girls at our gigs." Instrumental is created and hosted by Amber Petty - sponsored by Yamaha Music Australia.
How exciting! The podcasters engaging in debate over whether centralizing is better or should organizations de-centralize? Learn about how this tension shaped the early days of the United States while Ralph and Pedro face off against Dmitrijs and Tom! A special Thank You also goes out to Todd Bridgman and Stephen Cummings who set the tone and questions for this very first TAOP debate!
Amanda and Jenn discuss fantasy, diverse kids books, awkward romances and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Lady Rogue by Theresa Romain and Everywhere You Want to Beby Christina June. Questions 1. My husband loves fantasy but hasn’t read much recently. He has a long road trip this summer and is looking for a new series to dive into on audio. His past favorites have included Game of Thrones (of course!), anything by Patrick Rothfuss, Anne Rice books and Lord of the Rings. I had him try NK Jemisin Fifth Season and he couldn’t get into it. Any thoughts?? --Sara 2. Hi! My "deadline" for this question is June 2018, that is the first birthday month :). Two of my best girl friends have made me the proudest Auntie of three beautiful little boys. Ages 4 years, 8 months, and 2 months old. I love to gift them books, I always try to send at least one for each birthday/Christmas. All three of my nephews are multiracial, and two (4 years old and 8 months old) are brothers. I want to gift them books that have one or more of the following themes: ~ unique story lines ~ characters that are not white (bonus points for multiracial characters) ~ Stories that provide a broader view of the world/culture curated for little people I do not have a very deep knowledge of children's literature and find myself a little stuck, can you suggest books/authors for me to gift to my nephews? Below is a sampling of the books I have gifted them in the past: ~ The Day The Crayons Quit by Drew Daywalt, Oliver Jeffers~ The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, Michael Martchenko~ Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History by Vashti Harrison (decidedly too advanced for a two month old, but it is breathtakingly beautiful and he will grow into it!) Thanks! --Melissa 3. Hi Amanda, Hi Jenn I am taking woman's history, and my professor is focusing on American woman who influence history. She assigned a project on women we don't talk about but have influenced or changed society. I have been left wanting more because I want to learn more about women who have influence outside America. I would love to read more on Mexican women, British women, African American women who have influenced history. I have already read Code Girls, Wonder Woman, The Wolves at the Door, Headstrong. --Grace 4. Hello, my son's birthday is coming up towards the end of May, and I am looking for book recommendations. He will be turning 21. Lately, to my excitement,I have been able to find my way through a few books that we have both been able to form a connection over. We both seem to enjoy them and like talking about them together. But as of late I am now stuck. Could you help me with some recommendations? Among his favorites are the Night Circus by Morgenstern, and Little, Big by Crowley. I have not read those yet, but from how he describes them I would like to read them. Some books I gave him that we both like are the short story collections of Edgar Allan Poe, and Shirley Jackson. Also, the Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things ( which are a collection of Japanese ghost stories with a mythological and traditional background). Graphic novels are a big plus, because of his love for art. I'm not sure if this will help but we both like Tim Burton's work. Thank you for your help --Melissa 5. Hello! First things first, I absolutely love this podcast! Thank you so much for always have great recommendations! I have recently read "Me before you" by Jojo Moyes and really enjoyed it especially the controversial subject of assisted suicide that's legal in Switzerland. I have also previously read "The Universe Versus Alex Woods" by Gavin Extense that has the same subject in the book. I got very interested in this subject and haven't been able to find any great books that deal with this matter. I was wondering if you'd be able to help me with that! Thank you so so much! --Fabiola 6. Jenn and Amanda, Though I used to read a lot of urban fantasy romance in the past, more recently I tend to just dabble in romance. One of the things that I’ve really wanted to see is a heroine who is not instantly great at the sexy times. I thought I had found the perfect heroine in Lady Philippa in One Good Earl Deserves a Lover by Sarah MacLean, but unfortunately as soon as the steamy scenes became physical, our heroine is very not awkward and somehow instinctually knows what to do. I don’t know if this is a weird request, but I think I would like to see some more awkward and not-intuitively-good-at-sex sexy times between the romance hero and heroine. Can you ladies help me out?? --B 7. Hello Ladies! I'm sure you've gotten a few of these already but... Black Panther, Afrofuturism, please! Black Panther has long been one of my favorite superheroes and I am so f****** pleased that the movie was so good and that so many people are excited about it. I've heard it described as afrofuturism which is a term I've heard before, but am maybe not as familiar with as I'd like to be. I think I'm a little more interested in a novel, but I'll take a comic if you've got one you are excited about. I'm not even sure if these qualify under that genre (as my understanding of the term is loose), but I've read N.K. Jemisin's Broken Earth Trilogy (well, the first two so far, third will be soon) & Octavia Butler is on my list. What have you got? Thank you! --Violet Books Discussed So Lucky by Nicola Griffith (out May 15) History of the Philippines by Luis H. Did Abraham Maslow actually ever draw a pyramid of hierarchy of needs? Did Kurt Lewin devote substantial work on the development of a change management theory? Why do we omit or misrepresent important features of the work of Adam Smith, Max Weber or Frederick Winslow Taylor? What is the forgotten origin of Harvard Business School case method? I was joined by two of the authors—Stephen Cummings and Todd Bridgman— ofA New History of Management (Cambridge University Press, 2016), a great new book that answers those and many more questions. The book is a very important contribution to critical management studies that uncovers the inaccuracies and simplifications (if not actual inventions) that populate management and organization textbooks. A New History of Management is not a conspiracy theory, but rather it is the result of rigorous historical research on how the field of management studies was constructed in the past century. The authors argue that the existing narratives about how we should organize are built upon, and reinforce, a concept of “good management” derived from what is assumed to be a fundamental need to increase efficiency. But this assumption is based on a presentist, monocultural, and generally limited view of management's past. This book is for both scholars and practitioners, tutors and students. Academics will be able to reflect critically on the nature of business education and on conformism in teaching and research. Practitioners and students will be able to challenge what they have been taught as a scientific rather than ideological artifact. Both students and scholars will be able to discuss alternative approaches for managing and organizing in the twenty-first century. Animated videos on the book are available on here. Andrea Bernardi is Senior Lecturer in Employment and Organization Studies at Oxford Brookes University in the UK. He holds a doctorate in Organization Theory from the University of Milan, Bicocca. He has held teaching and research positions in Italy, China and the UK. Among his research interests are the use of history in management studies, the co-operative sector, and Chinese co-operatives. His latest project is looking at health care in rural China. He is the co-convener of the EAEPEs permanent track on Critical Management Studies.
