Jay takes a seat at the world's most uncomfortable dinner party courtesy of Mike's latest cinematic punishment: Sushi Girl (2012), a post-Tarantino crime flick where the tension is raw, the violence is extra crispy, and the titular sushi girl lies perfectly still while a bunch of washed-up crooks yell at each other in between flashbacks. Mark Hamill wonderfully hams it up, Tony Todd tries to class up the joint, and somewhere in the middle a rogue's gallery of B-movie/slumming A-list stars arrive; including Michael Biehn, Danny Trejo, Sonny Chiba, Jeff Fahey and Noah Hathaway, the now all-grown-up guy who played Atreyu from The Neverending Story! Jay tries to figure out if this is a crime thriller, a food safety violation, or both, and then the guys count down their Bottom Five Meals—cinematic servings of food so unappetizing they'll have you reaching for antacid. And if all that weren't enough to settle your stomach, the guys close out the show by paying tribute to the recently-passed Tony Todd with a memorial tribute round of Kick Two, Pick Two. So grab your chopsticks, question your life choices, and join the podcast that wields films like deadly weapons where, like sushi, revenge is served cold.

Golgothan Guastini Special Effects Get M.A.D. with Chris Graves 8-28-2022 Vincent GuastiniThis podcast is uncut and slightly longer than the standard one-hour show we usually get from Chris.Notes By Chris Graves:I'd like to welcome motion picture/television makeup & special effects master, Vincent J. Guastini! I once had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Guastini in 2007, for filmmaker Kevin Smith's official news website, Newsaskew, now defunct, unfortunately.Vincent started his own special make-up effects company at the age of 22, originally in New Jersey and New York for 15 years, and then later in Hollywood for 19 years. Specializing in prosthetics, creature effects, design, and animatronics. His big breakthrough film came in 1991 when asked to take over the prosthetic effects for Michael Mann's 60-million dollar film "The Last of the Mohicans" for 20th Century Fox. After this film, Vincent went on to supervise and design creature effects for various studio and independent films. In 2001 Vincent moved his company to the West Coast and is now one of the top effects & design studios in Hollywood where Vincent lives and is based for the past 20 years.Vincent's practical effects work is mostly known for his 30-plus years in the business of creating the groundbreaking animatronic wings and creature effects in Kevin Smith's film "Dogma" and for Darren Aronofsky's film, "Requiem for a Dream", he designed sculpted and applied prosthetics changing Oscar-nominated actress Ellen Burstyn into a thinning decaying woman. The prosthetic transformation made Vincent an Oscar hopeful that year and is looked at as one of the most convincing transformations in prosthetic makeup history for subtlety and realism. He later worked with Aronofsky again on the film "Aftermath" starring Arnold Schwarzenegger where Vincent's team created silicone bodies for a graphic plane crash.Guastini's other groundbreaking effects include the first use of silicone technology with fire victim effects for Clint Eastwood's "Letters of Iwo Jima" and "Flags of Our Father". Other films include the Bryan Singer-produced horror film hit "The Taking of Deborah Logan". With the help of prosthetic silicone appliances and puppets, Vincent and his team transformed actress Jill Larson into a crazed demonic possessed creature.Film History & Background:V.G.P. Film & TV Projects: Vincent's film and T.V. credits include either as an effects technician, or supervisor and designer are, Dogma, Requiem for a Dream, The Last Of The Mohicans, Letters Of Iwo Jima, Flags of Our Father, Stephen King's Langoliers, Stephen Kings Thinner, Stephen Kings Mr. Mercedes, World War Z, Scary Movie 4, Super Mario Bros The Movie, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Child's Play 3, Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, Virus, Man On The Moon, The Taking of Deborah Logan, V/H/S/ Viral, Cabin Fever Patient Zero, Sushi Girl, The Devil's Carnival 1& 2, Till Death, Silent Night, Night of The Tommyknockers, NIX", Saturday Night Live, Third Watch, Dr. Phil Show, The Howard Stern Show, The Rosie O'Donnell Show, Law and Order, Conan O'Brien, Animal Planet's Lost Tapes, Comedy Central's This is Not Happening, and the Get Shorty T.V. We've had the pleasure of hanging with the man on a few sets, and sharing his love and passion for the cool practical effects that he creates. Vincent's not only a way cool, down-to-earth guy, but he also has been effectively keeping the beauty of real, actual creatures and effects in film, making new strides and creating never-before-seen visuals that just wouldn't look the same in CGI. We applaud him for that. You may recognize some of Guastini's effects in the View Askew flicks Vulgar, Dogma, and Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back. He also MIGHT be on board for "Red State" (lips tightened but fingers crossed) and even designed some test stuff for the Green Hornet flick that never was. On this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, the Buzzards rip it up with venerable character actor and musician James Duval who has had one helluva career. His career starts with what would become a lifelong cinematic relationship. His work with filmmaker Gregg Araki has spawned four feature films, one MTV pilot and one television series including TOTALLY F***ED UP, THE DOOM GENERATION, NOWHERE, KABOOM, "This Is How the World Ends" and "Now Apocalypse". Jimmy would go on to a career that spans over 30 years and over 175 credits. Some of his other most known films include early trangressive masterwork MOD FUCK EXPLOSION, INDEPENDENCE DAY (as Randy Quaid's son), Doug Liman's GO, the GONE IN 60 SECONDS remake (with Nic Cage and Angelina Jolie), SLC PUNK and it's sequel PUNK'S DEAD: SLC PUNK 2, the Sundance horror film MAY, he won an award for the film THE DOE BOY, SUSHI GIRL, TALES OF HALLOWEEN, and, most recently, I, CHALLENGER (see episode 302!). There is one movie that he can never quite shake. It was a small Sundance film that rolled out to deathly box office numbers but over time has steadily become one of the most well-known cult films of all time. That, of course, is DONNIE DARKO where he plays Frank the Rabbit. Then there is the music side of Jimmy. As a guitarist he led a band called Antoneus Maximus & The Nuthouze Band and played in another called Gene Wilder with fellow filmmakers Brian McGuire and Bret Roberts. He associated strongly with jangle pop band The Jazz Butcher and worked with David J from Bauhaus and Love & Rockets. So get out your yoga mat, light some incense, drink some herbal tea as we venture into the career, loves and passions, and overall positive and energetic state of mind of one James Duval on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ. Please remember to hit "like" and "subscribe" on our YouTube Channel, Spotify and iTunes. Tell your friends. If you have any comments, questions, ideas for topics or guests please email us at FIVEDOLLARBUZZ@gmail.com. We'll get back to ya as soon as we ask Frank the Rabbit about this nuclear warhead that just rose up in our fucking living room

Welcome back for our first FULL episode of 2019! We trust that you are suitably over the festivities and that regular service can now resume? Good! It's Episode 35 and we are delighted to be joined by Dread Central/Horrorhound journalist/host of the awesome Horror Happens Radio Show (which holds Andy among its esteemed alumni), it's Jay Kay! His chosen film? Sushi Girl! Surely fitting the remit for the show by being painfully overlooked and underseen, Kern Saxton's Sushi Girl is a crime thriller, firmly in the vein of Tarantino which features a mind-bogglingly impressive cast that features Tony Todd, Mark Hamill, Noah Hathaway, Cortney Palm, Danny Trejo, Michael Biehn and Jeff Fahey! The synopsis is as follows: Fish has just served out his prison sentence for his part in the heist, after refusing to give up information on his accomplices or the whereabouts of the missing diamonds. After release, mob boss Duke invites him along with the rest of the gang, including Crow, to a dinner of sushi served on a the naked body of a seemingly catatonic woman, by chef Sonny Chiba. But Duke still wants to know where his diamonds are, and when Fish doesn’t have them, the party turns sinister. Fish soon finds himself tied up and systematically tortured, as the gang try to work out who is telling the truth, and more importantly, who has the diamonds.
