This week Bryan and Dave take a look at John Carl Buechler's swing-and-a-miss for the Charles Band dynasty, Troll. It's supposed to be filled with whimsy, adventure, and high-fantasy but is instead filled with crappy rubber monsters and cringe-inducing performances by actors tenured enough to know better by this point. Noah Hathaway casually throws away any goodwill he earned with his portrayal of Atreyu in The Neverending Story. Michael Moriarty seems to have no idea what he's even doing there. It's all a jumbled mess that somehow managed to be a smash-hit at the box office for Empire Pictures and a video rental gem of the 1980's. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bring-me-the-axe/message
(11/13/23) - In honor of actor Noah Hathaway's birthday - and his portrayal of "Atreyu" in the 1984 film The Neverending Story
HAPPY HOUR FLIX is a podcast all about the movies you love. A nostalgic look at what we grew up watching and how they still impact us today.Today we jump back to one what is quickly becoming one of our favorite years to review movies, 1984....with movies such as the top-grossers Ghostbusters, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Karate Kid, Police Academy, Footloose, Beverly Hill Cop, Star Trek III, as well as The Terminator, Amadeus, Nightmare on Elm Street, This is Spinal Tap, Starman, and two we've talked about before, Gremlins and the Last Starfighter, The Never Ending Story is in good company. And our special guest is the man behind the work you hear every week, the Wizard of Oz himself, partner in crime, writer and producer extraordinaire, James Allerdyce. And just like the Wizard he knows just about everything about this movie, sharing a ton of personal insight during the very spirited and imaginative conversation. And of course, a thanks to our good friends over at Misguided Spirits, today's cocktail comes over from Jake's Dilemma 430 Amsterdam Ave, one of the best local spots on the Upper West Side for so long, mixed courtesy of our friend and bartender, PAIGE CORWIN. Also a sick RB singer by the way. With a new single out “Unlearn how to Love You.” You know all the amazing clouds and colors we see in the opening credits? That's the inspiration for today's drink: THE NOTHING SUNRISE1 part Whiskey1 parts blood orange oj2 part oj1/2 part grenadine Orange wheel Build in order over ice in a highball. Grenadine float. Garnish with an orange wheel.Okay back to the movie. Come with us as we explore the setting of Fantasia, the incredible characters, phenomenal performances, the meta upon meta themes that still blow our mind today, and the legendary music and score that, admit it, when you hear it you know exactly where you are. One of the most imaginative movies of the 80's it's approach to grief, loss, hope and fear there is so much to explore. From urban legends about Artax to truly terrifying experiences of Atreyu. There is so much to unpack in this movie, we literally had to cut ourselves off...so come with us as we stretch the world of Fantasia back over the Nothing and ask two of the most important questions of all our discussions: how truly involved was the otherwise never mentioned Steven Spielberg, and does the movie hold up?Now pour that cocktail and enjoy with us!A quick reminder, no matter where you are listening to us, if you could rate us and drop us a review on Apple Podcasts, we'd be so grateful - it really helps us spread the good vibes. Thank you!HAPPY HOUR FLIX is produced by James Allerdyce and Lori Kay, and hosted by Steven Pierce and Matt Mundy.Main Title is by Johnny Mineo.Happy Hour Flix | Movies You Love
Yep, "tarantula" has to be our winner on the "strange foods people have eaten" topic. A lot of good listener participation on this one! We also talked about the 1984 movie "NeverEnding Story" on this, the birthday of the lead kid Noah Hathaway. Being World Kindness day, Tim offered to send Laura and her husband (still living states apart) to Disneyland for their Christmas events, plus side hustles like Posh Mark, Mercari, and adult babysitting. Pufnstuf (also known as Pufnstuf Zaps the World) is a 1970 American comedy fantasy musical film produced by Sid and Marty Krofft Enterprises and released by Universal Pictures. It is based on the children's television series H.R. Pufnstuf, a show that features a cast of puppets on a "living island." The NeverEnding Story is a 1984 fantasy film co-written and directed by Wolfgang Petersen (in his first English-language film), and based on the 1979 novel The Neverending Story by Michael Ende. It was produced by Bernd Eichinger and Dieter Giessler, and stars Noah Hathaway, Barret Oliver, Tami Stronach, Patricia Hayes, Sydney Bromley, Gerald McRaney and Moses Gunn, with Alan Oppenheimer providing the voices of Falkor and Gmork (as well as other characters). It follows a boy who finds a magical book that tells of a young warrior who is given the task of stopping the Nothing, a dark force, from engulfing the wonderland world of Fantasia. At the time of its release, it was the most expensive film produced outside the United States or the Soviet Union. It was the first in The NeverEnding Story film series. It adapts only the first half of the book, and consequently does not convey the message of the title as it was portrayed in the novel. The second half of the book was subsequently used as a rough basis for the second film, The NeverEnding Story II: The Next Chapter (1990). The third film, The NeverEnding Story III: Escape from Fantasia (1994), has an original plot not based on the book. Steal the most unwieldy leather-bound tome you can find from your mysterious neighborhood bookseller and hide in your school's spooky attic as we fly off into a serious childhood touchstone, 1984's The NeverEnding Story. Is the raw egg swilling dad in this a secret alcoholic? Do we all have deep deep horse girl feelings? Why does this movie swing between scaring the crap out of kids, and making them bawl in utter grief? And for all the great puppetry in this—hello Falkor, you amazing fantasy steed—why does the evil Nothing wolf look like a Chuck E. Cheese side character? We're sure the answers will come from this heartrendingly plaintive child ruler named after our hippie mom.

Wolfgang Peterson traumatized scores of children with his harrowing depiction of Atreyu losing his horse Artax in the Swamp of Sadness, but is there any truth to the urban legend about the real-life horse dying in the scene? No, but there is a lot you might not know about what went into that iconic moment, which included a dangerous close call to actor Noah Hathaway. In episode 192, Luke & James relive their childhood with this important 80s fantasy gem and try to recapture the magic. Finally, is this adaptation superior to Michael Ende's original novel? This week on Total Movie Recall, we take a big shit on Boomers and their cheap nostalgia for a “better time.” A time when a bunch of baseball-loving kids' black friend would have had to walk home to his segregated neighborhood. A time of nuclear anxiety because our megalomaniacal leaders were determined to blow up the world. A time when women were openly sexually harassed with no consequences. But hey, wasn't baseball fun? Welcome back for our first FULL episode of 2019! We trust that you are suitably over the festivities and that regular service can now resume? Good! It's Episode 35 and we are delighted to be joined by Dread Central/Horrorhound journalist/host of the awesome Horror Happens Radio Show (which holds Andy among its esteemed alumni), it's Jay Kay! His chosen film? Sushi Girl! Surely fitting the remit for the show by being painfully overlooked and underseen, Kern Saxton's Sushi Girl is a crime thriller, firmly in the vein of Tarantino which features a mind-bogglingly impressive cast that features Tony Todd, Mark Hamill, Noah Hathaway, Cortney Palm, Danny Trejo, Michael Biehn and Jeff Fahey! The synopsis is as follows: Fish has just served out his prison sentence for his part in the heist, after refusing to give up information on his accomplices or the whereabouts of the missing diamonds. After release, mob boss Duke invites him along with the rest of the gang, including Crow, to a dinner of sushi served on a the naked body of a seemingly catatonic woman, by chef Sonny Chiba. But Duke still wants to know where his diamonds are, and when Fish doesn’t have them, the party turns sinister. Fish soon finds himself tied up and systematically tortured, as the gang try to work out who is telling the truth, and more importantly, who has the diamonds. Episode 153: “The Devil's Rejects” This week Host Dave Bledsoe makes a deal with the devil for his soul, only to find out his soul already repossessed to pay his bar tab at the Nancy Whiskey Pub in 2009. On the show this week we enjoy the misery of America's worst citizens, not the Kardashians, the other ones. Along the way we examine the travails of trailer park life (and remind you that your Host used to live in a trailer!) and why it is probably bad to bang your stepmother in law. (Solid advice) Also, we say to hell with the Devil and the Devil says “Thanks, but no thanks” to Nazis. (Even the Devil has SOME limits.) We also have some questions about whether or not modern Satanists are TRULY committed to the Dark Lord Satan or are just doing this to piss off their parents. (Hint: It's the parents) Also, Dave is apparently VERY upset about Noah Hathaway's stellar performance as Boxey on the original Battlestar Galactica. This seems to us very hyperbolic when the REAL sin against Science Fiction was the monkey in the Daggit costume. (What the hell is a Daggit anyway?) Our Sponsor this week is the Dark Lord Satan who wants you to know Nazis are not welcome in Hell. We open the show with a salute to Spring in the Reich and close with Morrissey whose political views are overshadowing his music. Are the trolls of ancient legend and fairy tales more menacing and relevant, or will the Internet trolls of the 21st century emerge victorious? Judge Darren Ewing hears expert arguments on both sides as Jeremiah Johnson argues the case of 1986's Troll, and Scott Baer debates on the side of 2012's Smiley, in this inaugural episode of Horror in the Court. The original Troll movie (not to mistaken with the non-sequel Troll 2 starring our own Judge Ewing) is a tale of a wizard-turned-troll that possesses the form of a young girl as he attempts to turn the world into a Troll universe. It is directed by John Carl Buechler and stars Noah Hathaway of Neverending Story Fame (ATREYU!) as the Harry Potter, Jr., 11-years before J.K. Rowling's boy wizard character of the same name. Other notables are Julia Louis Dreyfus, best known as Elaine from Seinfeld, and Sonny Bono.Smiley, directed by Michael J. Gallagher, contains a young cast of fresh-faced actors and is a 4Chan-inspired story of a band of Internet trolls and an urban legend killer called Smiley.Which troll will prevail?Be sure to come back next month when Judge Ewing will hear the case of Ravenous v. Feast, a battle of the people eaters!
