Keith and I were recently reminiscing about summers of the past. We both have fond memories of the weekly radio show Kasey's Top 40, hosted by Casey Kasem, that highlighted the Top 40 biggest hits on the pop music charts. We both remember enjoying tuning into this show on Saturday mornings. It got us thinking of WDFS Top Hits. For summer 2023 we are counting down our own Top 10 hits (we are a young podcast so the top 40 seemed ambitious!). Summer bounties are hitting our dinner, picnic and BBQ tables, and farmers are busy gearing up for another fall harvest season. But have you ever considered how much of the food we produce in Canada never even makes it to your plate? Or how much goes into the green bin? This year on Disruptors, an RBC Podcast, we tackled the challenge of food waste in a special series called “The Growing Challenge: How Canada Can Lead the Next Green Revolution in Agriculture.” We're showing good progress on limiting food spoilage and waste, but we can – and need to do – more.Listen in as host John Stackhouse hears from a variety of experts including Meeru Dhalwala, author, chef, and the co-owner of Vij's and Rangoli restaurants in Vancouver; Randy Huffman, the Chief Food Safety and Sustainability Officer at Maple Leaf Foods; Kevin Groh, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Loblaw Companies Limited; and Jeremy Lang, the founder and Vice-President of Sustainability at Pela Earth, the creator of a smart composting system called Lomi.

It's an issue that's estimated to cost Canada more than $21 billion per year -- nevermind the environmental impacts. But how much thought have you really given to the problem of food waste and spoilage, and how it could be hampering our country's effort to reduce emissions? Whenever wasted or spoiled food ends up buried in a landfill instead of decomposing while exposed to air, it generates methane — a potent greenhouse gas with 86 times the warming power of carbon dioxide. And it just so happens that Canada is one of the worst countries on the planet when it comes to wasted food. So what can be done about it?On this episode of Disruptors, an RBC podcast, co-hosts John Stackhouse and Trinh Theresa Do wrap up their special, three-part series called “The Growing Challenge”, with an in-depth examination of how both food waste and spoilage represent a huge and often overlooked obstacle to our nation's sustainability efforts. They'll also discuss new technologies and tactics helping food producers to address the issue — as well as how we as consumers all need to change our attitudes when it comes to things like best before dates, portion sizes, and so-called “rescued food.” In addition to some familiar voices from earlier episodes in the series like Sonya Hoo, Evan Fraser, and Kristjan Hebert, John and Theresa will also hear from Meeru Dhalwala, author, chef, and the co-owner of Vij's and Rangoli restaurants in Vancouver; Randy Huffman, the Chief Food Safety and Sustainability Officer at Maple Leaf Foods; Kevin Groh, Senior Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Loblaw Companies Limited; as well as Jeremy Lang, the founder and Vice-President of Sustainability at Pela Earth, which makes a smart, countertop-based composting system called Lomi. To learn more about Meeru Dhalwala you can visit her Wikipedia page or follow her on Instagram at @meerudhalwala. Maple Leaf Foods has much more information about its sustainability goals on its website. Loblaw Companies Limited has details on its efforts to reduce waste in both the textiles and food industries. The Hole in the Supply Chain with Deema Adada Deema Adada and Joe Lynch talk about the hole in the supply chain. Deema is the founder and CEO of GetSett a company that provided its customers with a complete, real-time snapshot of available inventory and location, labor resources and shipment arrivals to optimize dock appointments with greater accuracy. About Deema Adada Deema Adada, founder and CEO of GetSett has spent 15 years in the industry working with Coyote Logistics and Uber Freight in positions from sales to operations and strategy. In that time, she sat front row to the many pitfalls across the supply chain, where customers continuously shared the same frustrations: onsite congestion, missed appointments, inefficient labor management, and significantly rising costs. She has experienced first hand the disruptions that are occurring at both the first and final mile. There had to be a better way, so she created a female owned and operated tech-forward solution. About GetSett GetSett is a dynamic SaaS platform for the logistics industry that quickly and efficiently manages inventory at the most critical juncture for the entire supply chain; the dock door. Gone are the days of relying on phone calls, emails, and even faxes (yes, faxes). The fulfillment demand is skyrocketing and it is outpacing the available labor at the shipper. This puts pressure on the shippers to optimize their existing footprint and labor force. With GetSett, customers have a complete, real-time snapshot of available inventory and location, labor resources and shipment arrivals to optimize dock appointments with greater accuracy. Did a dock door open up sooner, or is a truck delayed due to weather? GetSett gathers and optimizes data from facilities, carriers and vendors to create a holistic view that adjusts to the latest intelligence for smarter task management, and updates each party accordingly. Simply put, we take information that’s long been isolated and use it to keep inventory moving faster, while saving money. Key Takeaways: The Hole in the Supply Chain The hole: Friction between transportation and the shipping location Gap of communication, transparency, and coordination between truck and warehouse Planning and execution are not aligned Data allows to fill that gap Measure (in time) what's actually happening The problem going outbound Plan not matching execution Detention fees Delays on other shipments. The problem going inbound Trucks arriving before the schedule time Loss opportunities Spoilage when its food Wasted time Getting products out the door Understanding what it takes to get products out the door How much time does it take the forklift to execute a movement in the warehouse? Plan the workflow correctly to get the most out of the labor Smarter schedules based on data How orders affect on another? Measure from the time the driver arrives until they leave. Identify the bottlenecks to create solutions Applying software in the warehouse to fill that hole Allowing more products to be distributed Avoid spending time problem solving in the warehouse Learn More About The Hole in the Supply Chain GetSett Deema Adada GetSett LinkedIn Profile Retail, Supply Chain, and Logistics Expo The Logistics of Logistics Podcast If you enjoy the podcast, please leave a positive review, subscribe, and share it with your friends and colleagues. At last, some good news - Vaccine. That word gave everyone a lift - something much needed as we come to another year's end, and what a year! HOPE helps as we all know. However, now the difficult task - Logistics. From warehouse freezer to rolled-up sleeves. Deep freeze production and then storage and transportation networks. Costly production, unstable component, cold chain transportation - short shelf life. Spoilage risk will be the focus now as well. Big challenges. Financial markets rebound on the news - good signs moving forward although the vaccine topic will be around for some time and there will be strategic choices to be made subject to country and financial commitments. Need solid collaboration and coordination now right down to last mile. SkylightCair - initiative launches and let's hope it can help and make a difference. Further information provided and a new website is up and running - Skylightcair.com. Lastly - Happy Birthday Ramani and Shub Diwali

A significant portion of all food grown ends up in a landfill. It’s a problem the UN says costs the world ~$2.6 trillion each year, much of which stems from produce going bad before it’s consumed. Spoilage is also the reason why millions of people around the world go hungry — without cold storage infrastructure, the produce can’t stay fresh long enough while it’s being transported to rural areas.Enter Apeel Sciences, the company who’s developed a plant-derived, edible coating that can keep produce from going bad for weeks longer than usual, even without refrigeration.*This episode is brought to you by Bite Toothpaste Bits, the world's first, 100% plastic-free toothpaste tablet. This special BONUS episode of Food Safety Matters brings you a discussion about an application of next-generation sequencing — metagenomics. As the cost of DNA testing decreases, practical applications are increasing, with one of the most exciting applications available being the use of sequencing to identify microorganisms in samples, including unculturable organisms. The value proposition of the 16s metagenomic application is that you can identify spoilage organisms in your facility, eliminate them and reduce the possibility of spoiled products reaching your consumers thus reducing your overall cost of quality. We will be speaking with Joe Heinzelmann, Director of Business development for food safety genomics at Neogen. Joe began his career as a nanotechnology chemist and has since focused on marketing and business development efforts. He graduated from Albion College with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry and from Northwood University with an MBA. Joe tells us more about the practical applications of metagenomics in eliminating spoilage organisms in a food processing facility. In this episode we speak to Neogen's Joe Heinzelmann about: Adoption of whole-genome sequencing by federal regulatory agencies and food processing companies. How metagenomics differs from how agencies are using whole-genome sequencing. What 16s metagenomics is and how is it used in plants. What kinds of data are being discovered with 16s metagenomics? What food industry trends can benefit from next-generation sequencing. Understanding the differences in data provided by whole-genome sequencing vs. metagenomics analyses. 16s Metagenomics Resources: 16s Metagenomics Overview http://bit.ly/2xLMeqg Metagenomics for Food Safety and Quality: Webinar Series http://mkt.foodsafety.neogen.com/acton/media/30418/metagenomics-for-food-safety-and-quality-webinar-series-linkedin Sponsored By: Neogen http://bit.ly/2xLMeqg
