Lundi 5 juin 2023, BE SMART reçoit Frédéric Encel (Géopolitologue, Sciences Po Paris) et Étienne Wasmer (Économiste et professeur, NYU Abu Dhabi)
• Pete Wasmer just wanted a burned-out pool light fixed • “Nobody else has a mobile app that the customers can use to have what I call an ‘Uber-like' experience” (Total Recorded Time is 21:00) When a light burns out in your swimming pool, replacing it is usually a job for the pool guy. When you can reach him. Veteran businessman Pete Wasmer was faced with that problem. And while he eventually reached the pool maintenance company, the hassle that was involved led Mr. Wasmer to develop unique software that is now being used by many service companies. “Nobody else has a mobile app that the customers can use to have what I call an ‘Uber-like' experience,” he says. Pete Wasmer talks about his software and being an entrepreneur in this edition of Bizgnus Interviews. Please click here to watch the interview: https://youtu.be/abul00nxkGk Earlier, Mr. Wasmer developed a national platform that he says changed the powersports industry by leasing – not selling or renting -- Harley-Davidson motorcycles. “We focused on creating a single system where data was input one time. It created all the documents that you needed,” he says. Funny how things will sit in the back of the brain, only coming out when they can be applied to a different set of circumstances. The data management Mr. Wasmer created to deal with leasing Harleys has become the foundation for a new cloud-based software-as-a-service company, Pure Coastal, which sells ProValet, software that lets its users deal with job scheduling, payments and more, especially customer communications. Peter developed a national platform that changed the powersports industry and created strong corporate identity through transformational visioning. He also re-branded and re-engineered sales and management processes for existing corporations through technology, marketing and process improvement.Being a serial entrepreneur doesn't always mean being successful; he admits that his clothing line “failed miserably.” But the entrepreneurs who make it are the ones who dust themselves off and get back to work. “You're driven by your own dreams,” he says. “You're not driven by somebody else telling you what to do.”Introducing the ProValet.io app to help RISC™ (Regular Interval Service Companies) business owners put more time and more money back into their lives via easy-to-use technology. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/electromonkeys)

Syrus Akbary is the founder and CEO of Wasmer, the startup behind the open-source web assembly runtime that's doing for WebAssembly what Docker did for LXC. Syrus explains what WebAssembly is, why it matters outside your browser, and how it compares to other virtualization technologies. He shares the pains that motivated him to look into WebAssembly and eventually led him to create a new WebAssembly runtime and a new company around it. We dive deep into WebAssembly as a technology, its portability and performance characteristics, and talk about the importance of prioritizing community and developer experience when building new development platforms.Show notes and transcript: https://about.sourcegraph.com/podcast/syrus-akbary

In this episode Crash's own Head of Engineering, Dave Wasmer joins Isaac to talk about how he launched his career in tech. When Dave graduated from college with a degree in economics, he wasn't sure where he wanted to go in his career. He used his self-taught programming skills to get an opportunity at a large corporation, but he soon realized that the corporate environment wasn't the place for him to flourish. He was feeling the itch to find a new opportunity, but it wasn't until a serendipitous blog post connected him with a start-up that everything fell into place. In this episode, Dave shares the stories of how he Crashed his career and built his way to a great career in tech. Connect with Dave at: * https://twitter.com/davewasmer * https://davewasmer.com/ Discussed in this episode: * How Dave crashed his career to get his first job in engineering for a software startup. * How blogging an idea led to a unique job opportunity. * Increasing your luck surface area: you can't replicate someone else's luck, but you do things that help you create your own. * How Dave decided to take a corporate job after college and how it helped him learn that working in startups was more in line with his personality. * The uncertainty in moving from working at a big company to a startup. * Dave's advice for people feeling the itch to make a career change: 1) Learn out loud: Don't just consume content while you're learning. Find ways to contribute to projects. 2) Focus on people: Invest your relationships. Get to know the people you're working with. Through your career, those relationships will matter more than almost anything else.

We’re talking with Syrus Akbary about WebAssembly and Wasmer — a standalone just in time WebAssembly runtime aiming to be fully compatible with Emscripten, Rust, and Go. We talked about taking WebAssembly beyond the browser, universal binaries, what’s an ABI?, running WebAssembly from any language, and what a world might look like with platform independent universal binaries powered by WebAssembly.

What’s a portfolio without a bond position? It’s incomplete and potentially riskier than necessary. We field so many questions about your portfolios and asset allocation and while stocks may seem sexier because of their upside potential, you always hear me stress that everyone needs exposure to bonds as well. We rarely dive into bonds in great detail--what they are, how they work, and why you absolutely need them, which is why I thought it would be time for a little Bond Boot Camp. Our leader for this mission on today’s podcast is Justin Land, aka the ultimate bond guru. Justin is the Director of Tax Exempt Portfolio Management at Wasmer, Schroeder & Company, an investment advisory firm based in Naples, FL. In the current environment where it seems like the Dow is setting records on a daily basis, there’s probably a lot of people out there who want to be 100% invested in stocks. But what happens when the Bull turns into a Bear -- what will help protect you then? What if I told you that by owning a bond position, you’d only miss out on a little of the upside, but in return, your downside would look far better when that eventual correction occurs. And make no mistake...it’s coming. It’s a matter of when, not if. After hearing this chat with the bond guru, if you don’t already, I hope you add some to your portfolio and start out 2018 on the right financial foot! “Better Off” is sponsored by Betterment.
