Matt Nelson (@dogfather) dropped out of college because he effectively monetized a twitter account where he numerically objectifies dogs. The popular account *We Rate Dogs* (@dog_rates) on Twitter is followed by over 8 million people, including JK Rowling and Cole Sprouse. Each tweet of him rating a dog out of ten, often exceeding the scale with a 12/10, generates multiple hundreds of thousands of likes and retweets. His Twitter account @dog_feelings, otherwise known as Thoughts of Dog, has 2.5 million followers because, as he says, he’s “good at writing like a dog and embodying that behavior.” Like We Rate Dogs, each tweet generates multiple hundreds of thousands of likes and retweets. He has similar accounts with millions of followers on Instagram as well. His work has been featured in scores of major media publications like CNBC, Money.com, Yahoo Finance, BBC, and Entrepreneur. He makes six figures rating dogs on social media. How? Find out in my conversation with the man Time.com called the “dog king of the internet,” 22-year-old Matt Nelson. Visit Matt at WeRateDogs.com.

For those of you who never knew something like WeRateDogs existed, it does. More than 3 million Twitter followers eagerly await the internet phenomenon of dog photo submissions being paired with witty captions — and the final products are brilliant. Not only is WeRateDogs used as a “joy outlet” for it’s followers, Matt has also ventured to use his online presence to converse and bring awareness to global conversations. In this episode, Branden chats with Matt on the creative craft of molding your words to convey your embarrassingly quirky thought or idea in 140 characters for your unpredictable audience. The account shares images of cute dogs with a rating on a scale of 1-to-10… although just about every dog gets a rating above 10… because, well… Matt believes dogs are pretty great. At 20 years of age, he just finished his sophomore year of college and he's juggling this side project he started a year and half ago—with a full course load and internship. Despite all of his competing priorities, he's been able to amass an incredible social following including 173,000 followers on Instagram and 167,000 followers on Instagram. AND, he's monetizing his audience—over the past four months, he's generated $50,000 in revenue—largely from the sale of merchandise from his website, weratedogs.com.

Debbie is a designer, author, educator and host of the podcast, Design Matters where she's interviewed designers, creatives, entrepreneurs like Malcolm Gladwell, Seth Godin, Steven Heller, Tina Roth Eisenberg and many more. Debbie spent 20 years as the President of Design at Sterling Brands, one of the world's top branding firms where she landed the company business with clients like Pepsi, Gilette, Star Wars and more. But Debbie's no stranger to the side hustle… she actually started freelancing on the side of her very first day job straight out of college—she did design work for small local businesses in her neighborhood in New York City. Since then, she's grown to having numerous side projects including her podcast, writing 6 books, teaching the Masters in Branding program at the School of Visual Arts, being the creative director at Print magazine, a blogger for Fast Company, and president emeritus of the American Institute of Graphic Arts, to name a few. This week on the MashReads Podcast, we read and discuss Angie Thomas' new YA novel The Hate U Give. The Hate U Give follows Starr Carter, a black teen who witnesses her unarmed friend Khalil get shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop. In addition to having to face the trauma of witnessing the shooting, as the sole witness to the incident, Starr finds herself at the center of the trial against the cop that shot Khalil. But after speaking to her police department about the incident, Starr quickly learns that any sense of justice following the shooting is going to be hard fought — rather than investigating the officer, the authorities conduct a character attack on Khalil, who was a drug dealer at the time of his death, with rumors circulating that he may have been in a gang. Now, mourning the loss of her friend, Starr must figure out how to find her voice and speak out, even while both cops and people in her neighborhood seek to silence her. Then, inspired by the way The Hate U Give addresses gun violence and police brutality, we discuss our favorite socially conscious literature including Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander, Citizen by Claudia Rankine, White Teeth by Zadie Smith, and Shrill by Lindy West. Aliza recommends Harry Styles' solo album Harry Styles. "His stuff is so good. It's got this '70s/ '80s vibe. I was literally listening to it on loop for a good two days." Martha recommends Amandla Stenberg's cover of Mac DeMarco's song Let My Baby Stay. "She directed the video and edited it, and it's so amazing. She's so talented." You can watch the performance here. Martha also recommends watching The Bachelorette. MJ recommends the Twitter account WeRateDogs™, a Twitter account that gives very optimistic and absurd ratings to dog photos.
