In this episode, I talk to the great comedian, WILL DAVIES. The comic has a deadpan, dry and very silly style on stage that is infectiously funny. His wonderful original comedy is absurdist and chaotic taking the audience on a journey of hilarity. I have watched Davies perform at the Sofa So Funny! showcase in London in 2023. Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. sociologist and political economist Will Davies. We spoke about his recent article in the London Review of Books, titled 'A Crisis in Credibility: Labour's Conundrum'. We discussed the nature of the economic agenda that Labour has adopted in its attempt to break out of the low-growth and low productivity rates that have characterised the UK economy in recent years. We chatted about the extent to which the Starmer-Reeves project emulates and diverges from the Biden administration's economic policies, and the left de-risking critique of so-called 'modern supply side economics'.

With special guest: Dr Will Davies… in conversation with Bill Kable Surprisingly little has been written about the last 100 days of World War 1. This is the time when the Australian Imperial Force had some of their greatest victories. It was also the time when Adolf Hitler was wounded in battle before coming to the unshakeable conclusion that Germany had been betrayed in agreeing to sue for peace. This imbalance in the accounts of the conflict has been addressed by Will Davies in his new book The Last 100 Days: The Australian Road to Victory in the First World War. In his book Will reveals why he has been described as being more than an historian because he has the rare gift of being a story weaver. As with his other books on the events of World War One this story will remain etched in your memory. Podcast (mp3)

Mark Hulton and Will Davies formed HBD partners with their strong experience in the hospitality business as their foundation. They know the blood, sweat, and tears that come with the hospitality industry, so they always dreamed of eventually scaling their business once they get the right revenues to add more people to their team. But the pandemic hit, and their industry was one of the most badly affected. Despite the hospitality industry shutting its doors, Mark and Will knew that they could bounce back from it. So when the pandemic ended, they immediately worked on looking for ways to hack their growth. They had no idea how to go about it, where to get started, and whether the risks were worth it. But they had to make it happen, so they signed up for the Rockit program. What a game-changer! They realized that they needed to implement a lot of changes to make growth happen. Their mindset and confidence started to shift, and they found themselves getting projects that they used to be afraid of taking. From working mostly in commercial roles, they have now included finance, revenue, and IT as part of their hospitality recruitment portfolio. In just 12 months, they doubled their year-on-year revenue while also doubling their headcount. They realized that waiting for more revenue before hiring an office manager was not helpful at all. They did the exact opposite and hired an office manager anyway, and that's what allowed them to rake in the revenue they want. Once they had the right people in place, Mark and Will had time to focus on the tasks that truly mattered to them. They were also able to add more structure to their business, accelerating the progress of everyone involved. Tune in to this episode to find out what kind of action Mark and Will took to scale their business and get the results they wanted in just 12 months. “It's so much more difficult to do something on your own without the knowledge, without the understanding. So use as much knowledge, advice, guidance, and mentoring as you can.” - Mark Hulton In this episode, Mark and Will talk about: How their foray into hospitality recruitment came from their mutual experience in the industry Their goal of scaling the business fresh from the pandemic, but are clueless about how to get started The challenges of bouncing back from the pandemic, knowing that their industry was badly hit How powerful mindset and confidence can be powerful tools in growth The biggest beliefs that they had to change to make a huge difference in their business growth The catalyst that pushed them to move out of their comfort zone and take the necessary steps to change and grow their business What kind of impact a supportive community can have on business growth The importance of knowing where and how to spend your time as a business owner The benefit of having a performance structure so no resource is wasted and clients get the solutions they need in a timely manner And so much more! With special guest: Dr Will Davies… in conversation with Bill Kable This book started when Will Davies’ insatiable curiosity got him wondering about a group of graves in the war cemeteries of northern France. These graves were all on their own, usually next to the boundary fence. When he went to have a look he found that they were erected for Chinese participants in the First World War. Since China was supposedly neutral in that conflict and did not have a seat at the table when the powers decided on war reparations what was this all about? Will gives us a fascinating account of the real story behind these forgotten men in his new book The Forgotten: The Chinese Labour Corps and the Chinese Anzacs in the Great War. Podcast (mp3)

In the early months of the pandemic, the government shut down whole sectors of the economy and started paying the wages of a huge proportion of Brits. Some worked from home, juggling homeschooling their kids and figuring out how to use Zoom. Others risked their health to travel to work. Meanwhile Big Tech and outsourcing companies raked in money through government contracts. What can we learn from moments when the predictable rules of economic life are suspended? Who wins and who loses in these points of crisis? And has the pandemic pushed us into a new form of capitalism? Ayeisha is joined by Sahil Dutta and Nick Taylor, lecturers in political economy at Goldsmiths University to discuss their new book "Unprecedented? How Covid-19 revealed the politics of our economy" - The book written alongside Will Davies and Martina Tazzioli is out now: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/691630/unprecedented-by-william-davies-sahil-jai-dutta-nick-taylor-and-martina-tazzioli/ - Find out more about Sahil and Nick's work here: https://www.perc.org.uk/ - Further reading on the care crisis and coronavirus by Emma Dowling here: https://www.versobooks.com/books/4031-the-care-crisis ----- Researched by Margaret Welsh. Aris Komporozos-Athanasiou, Professor of Sociology at University College London, argues in Speculative Communities (Chicago) that speculation is no longer confined to the sphere of finance, but has, through virtual marketplaces, new social media and dating apps, become an integral part of the most intimate realms of our lives. We analyse whether there was anything but jam tomorrow from the chancer Chancellor in his Spring Statement. During a historic cost of living crisis, has Rishi Sunak come anywhere close to meeting the moment? Plus, as scandals surrounding Boris Johnson and his Government resurface, we dive into the sleaze. Will Davies, a professor in political economy and co-author of Unprecedented?: How COVID-19 Revealed the Politics of Our Economy, is this week's guest. “This statement struck the wrong note for the challenge we as a country are facing.” – Alex Andreou “It is useful for Johnson to draw a line between himself and Europe, and the EU can get more done without Britain.” – Ros Taylor “Johnson will no doubt want to use Ukraine in any way he can to distract from partygate.” – Will Davies “Sunak had the choice of doing right by the country or right by the party, and he chose the latter.” – Alex Andreou www.patreon.com/ohgodwhatnow Presented by Dorian Lynskey with Alex Andreou and Ros Taylor. A lot of people in previous episodes have talked about how bringing talent into their businesses has been a game-changer, not only for revenue but for morale as well. In this mini-series I wanted to cover more practical advice, the ‘I don't know what I don't know'. In this episode, we hear from Will Davies, co-founder of HBD Partners as he not only works in recruitment but has also brought people into his business on PAYE. Will offers practical advice on how to tackle this very important area of starting a company. Advice: Before employing anyone make sure you have budgeted for at least six months of their salary The advantage of employing a contractor is more flexibility - but the downside is they may have other jobs at the same time, so will be less focused on your businessFull-time employees involve more paperwork for the employer however are more cost-efficient Take time to find the right person. A good first step is to write your company's handbook, write a contract, identify exactly your company's ethos and what sort of person will be a good fit. An employee handbook, together with a contract and an offer letter, will help the employee with their expectations so they can start work with confidence and clarityWhen interviewing, do not to be swayed by personality; if you need experience, then that is what to look forAn employer must be sure the candidate has eligibility to work in the UK; they must either have a British passport, or a working visa, or settled status. Go to the government website for advice on thisCheck their notice period in their current job and consider whether you can waitCheck whether or not they currently have a hands-off clause which could hamper them when working for youCheck their references. You are entitled to ask the previous employer a few character questions, although they are not obliged to answer themYou will need to build a HR file, containing their signed contract, GDPR statement and bank details Make sure before the candidate starts that you have the necessary equipment so they can start right awayYou will need to budget for National Insurance and pension contributions (as well as a possible one-off recruitment fee)You may want to consider Employment Liability Insurance, and Professional Indemnity InsuranceIf your employee is going to work from home make their targets clearEndeavour to have a good relationship with your employees, take time to get to know themYou can reach Will via will@hbdpartners.co.uk Head over to Speakpipe to leave your voice note for future guests too.LastPass the password-keeping site that syncs between devices.Google Workspace is brilliant for small businessesBuzzsprout podcast 'how to' & hosting directoryCanva has proved invaluable for creating all the social media assets and audio bites. For contracts check out Law Depot.Edited by Renale Mathurin.
