Timestamps: "The Last of Us": (00:00:53) "Ip Man": (00:32:00) Series Synopsis: "The Last of Us" is an American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. Based on the 2013 video game developed by Naughty Dog, the series is set twenty years after a mass fungal infection sparked a global pandemic and follows Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. The supporting cast features Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother Tommy and Anna Torv as Joel's smuggler partner Tess. "Ip Man" (Chinese: 叶问 / 葉問) is a 2008 Hong Kong biographical martial arts film based on the life of Ip Man, a grandmaster of the martial art Wing Chun and teacher of Bruce Lee. The film focuses on events in Ip's life that supposedly took place in the city of Foshan during the Sino-Japanese War. The film was directed by Wilson Yip, and stars Donnie Yen as Ip Man, with martial arts choreography by Sammo Hung. The supporting cast includes Simon Yam, Lynn Hung, Lam Ka-tung, Xing Yu, Hiroyuki Ikeuchi, and Tenma Shibuya. The film was a co-production between China and Hong Kong, and was the last film to be distributed by Mandarin Films.

In this episode of Midnight at the Movies, I give my raw thoughts and first impressions of the film Ip Man 4: The Finale (2019), directed by Wilson Yip, starring Donnie Yen, Scott Adkins, Vanda Margraf, and some other people.

When ex-US Marine and martial arts instructor Chris Collins took his Wing Chun pupils to see the film Ip Man 3 in 2015, he joked that he would be appearing in the next film in the Ip Man series - if another sequel was ever made. Fast-forward several months and Chris is sitting in front of director Wilson Yip, who is offering him a role in the fourth and final instalment of the hit kung fu movie series starring Donnie Yen. Chris, who plays one of the villains in the film, says his rapid rise in the Hong Kong film industry is because of his intense focus and determination to achieve his goals, honed after serving nine years in the US Marine Corps. As a combat specialist, Chris toured the globe learning the fighting arts from some of the world's toughest martial artists, using this knowledge to inform the marine training programme. He still teaches martial arts to this day from his base in Hong Kong and his satellite schools around the world, instructing in mostly boxing, Brazilian jiu jitsu, Filipino weapons systems and Wing Chun. It was his role as a fight trainer, stunt performer and choreographer which eventually saw him befriend and work with some of the Hong Kong film industry's top talent. On this episode, listen to Chris share his fascinating life story; from being the bullied son of Chinese-American parents growing up in a predominantly white neighbourhood in Ohio and Florida, to joining the army and fighting in some of the US military's most intense conflicts. We also discuss his love of Hong Kong, and how the movies saved him after he stepped away from the competitive fighting circuit; a career decision which has seen him work with the likes of Tony Jaa and Sammo Hung in 2017's Paradox, and Donnie Yen and Scott Adkins in 2019's Ip Man 4. We also highlight his many upcoming projects, one of which is Benny Chan's Raging Fire, which also stars Donnie Yen. In this installment of Catching Up On Cinema, Trevor has Kyle catch up on the modern Hong Kong martial arts classic, Ip Man (2008)! Directed by Wilson Yip, and starring the inimitable Donnie Yen (with fight choreography by the legendary Sammo Hung) the film is a personal favorite of Trevor's. Full disclosure, this episode is less comedic than most, with Trevor mostly using it as an excuse to talk about his love for martial arts films in general.

Ponemos punto y final a la década de los 90 hablando de uno de los lugares en donde el "tema zombi" continuó sobreviviendo; Asia. La influencia de cosas como Resident Evil (del cual hay un homenaje muy poco velado en esta película) mantuvieron a la figura del no-muerto durante la sequía cinematográfica de hace dos décadas. Aunque Wilson Yip sea ahora más conocido por su asociación con la mega estrella de los mamporros Donnie Yen, también hizo sus pinitos en la comedia de terror. Bio Zombie narra la consabida (y ya clásica) invasión de no-muertos en un centro comercial con bastante economía de medios pero con muchísima energía.
