Razorpay, a leading fintech name in India, providing a payments platform and banking-as-a-service software to some 10 million businesses, in the country, yesterday elevated Rahul Kothari to the position of chief operating officer for India and Malaysia. Kothari was previously chief business officer at the company. He will report to founder and CEO Harshil Mathur, the Bengaluru company said in a press release yesterday. This appointment sharpens Razorpay's focus on the Southeast Asia region, where it's looking to expand. The company also aims to implement a deeper integrated strategy to step up growth by improving customer experience across its different lines of business and products. In January, I wrote that Razorpay was at an inflexion point. About a month before that Shashank Kumar, the other founder, and Murali Brahmadesam had spoken about sustaining the culture of engineering at the company as it became bigger. Brahmadesam came in from AWS, earlier last year, and he'd taken on the CTO's role from Kumar, who was looking to free himself up from day-to-day engineering to focus on products strategy. The company has about 1,000 engineers among its 3,500 staff, or “Razors” as they're called internally, including several senior engineering leaders. Kumar had talked about how over the next five years, Razorpay would seek “tremendous scale.” And imports such as Brahmadesam will be playing a critical role on the engineering front. Razorpay is stepping up its expansion into a broader financial services platform, from its flagship payments business—it accounts for most of its revenues and is making money on a standalone basis—to facilitating loans, and banking software. The company is expected to go deeper into the emerging hot area of ‘banking as a service,' which accounting giant Deloitte defines as provisioning of banking products and services through third-party distributors. This opens up the possibility that a large number of new niche finance startups can partner large, established banks and financial services companies, and help each other tap a significantly larger market than they could individually. Razorpay could emerge as a facilitator of this growth, and benefit from it. To throw the story forward, while Razorpay has made a name for itself in India, “We want to see how we can create a global engineering brand while we are working out of Bengaluru and India,” Kumar had told me a year ago. Organizational changes such Kothari's appointment are important incremental steps in that direction on the business front. Kothari has a degree in chemical engineering from IIT Kanpur, and an MBA from Indian School of Business. Over the last 20 years or so, he's worked in the US, Europe and Australia. Currently based in Pune, he's into his fifth year with Razorpay. Previously, Kothari played a critical role in making the payments business profitable at PayU, according to Razorpay's press release. He's also worked at security software company Symantec, BPO company WNS, and Boston Consulting Group. Next year, Razorpay will be 10 years old. Technically, it was started in 2013 in Jaipur, but Mathur and Kumar, alumni of IIT Roorkee, moved base to Bengaluru quickly, and the company is widely considered to be founded in 2014. They were one of the first Indian startup founders to be part Y Combinator. Investors including Lone Pine Capital, Alkeon Capital, TCV, GIC, Tiger Global, Peak XV Partners (formerly Sequoia Capital India), Ribbit Capital, Matrix Partners, and Salesforce Ventures have invested a total of $741.5 million in the company in six rounds of funding. In December 2021, the company was privately valued at $7.5 billion, making it one of India's most valued startups. The company reported close to Rs. 1,500 crore in FY22 revenues, a 75 percent growth over the previous fiscal, and it was profitable on a standalone basis, for the flagship payments business.

Hello and welcome to Cause of Death – 100 Seconds to Midnight. I'm your host, Jackie Moranty. In the last episode, I briefly mentioned White Nose Syndrome. It's a terrible disease that has killed off about 90% of some species of bats in North America. If you haven't listened to the last episode, I suggest that you go back and give that one a listen before we start this one. It gives a pretty good overview of the importance of bats to several ecosystems and to people. If you have listened to that episode, then you already know how invaluable this order is. Without them, we wouldn't have several species of plants, nor would we have many vaccines, we may not have echolocation technology. Bats have given us so much. Now, we need to think about what we can do for them. Let's begin with the etiology and pathology of White Nose Syndrome. White Nose Syndrome is caused by a pathogenic fungus called Pseudogymnoascus destructans that was formerly known as Geomyces destructans. After close study, the fungus was reclassified because it more closely resembles other fungi from the Pseudeurotiaceae family. P. destructans is a psychrophilic, or cold-loving, fungus that forms asymmetrically curved conidia. SPONSORED CONTENT MEDIA headlines earlier this year called for a pause in the development of artificial intelligence because of fears that it will “tear humanity apart”. The most tech-savvy minds on the planet, having unleashed the beast, are having second thoughts. What's the reality for AI and machine learning as they apply to the shipping and logistics business? What is their past, who is using these processes today, and where will AI be most effective in future? Although the transportation sector is only on the cusp of implantation with the technology, there are plenty of instances where AI is not only needed but essential. In this podcast, Jaison Augustine, head of shipping and logistics business unit at WNS, and Thomas Heydorn, global head of operations and process transformation at ECU Worldwide, lift the lid on AI and identify where it is most likely to be used. Not surprisingly, they argue that AI won't replace human contributions to the workplace — or even tear the workplace apart — but by managing information super-effectively, it will equip people better to make well-informed decisions. Take the monster that drives every business in every town and city on the planet: emails. For the largest logistics business, it's not uncommon to generate more than a million emails a month on a plethora of topics from shipping instructions to amendment requests via invoice disputes, claims and complaints. That's the playground for AI to create recognisable patterns and direct traffic to the correct workstreams. It would transform the working lives of thousands of employees struggling to respond to and meet customer expectations. In maritime, AI will become an integral part of autonomous shipping, predictive analytics and information management. This will require a flow of clean data, new tech skills and a willingness to throw out legacy business processes in favour of new thinking. AI is not without its challenges, Augustine and Heydorn agree. However, as shipping and logistics become even more complex amid geopolitical and climate crisises, and as workplace skills shift and shape, the case for information management on a scale not seen before becomes overwhelming. AI is divisive even before most people in shipping and logistics know what it is capable of doing. Opting to continue struggling with emails as customers demand greater engagement might not be the best plan. Perhaps AI is the answer. Find out the latest thinking on AI for shipping and logistics on this Lloyd's List podcast.

Facing record levels of attrition, India's second-largest software services firm Infosys is reportedly invoking the non-compete clause in the employment agreements to curb attrition. A Pune-based IT union, The Nascent Information Technology Employees Senate (NITES), has written to the Union Labour Ministry seeking the removal of the clause, calling it “arbitrary, unethical and illegal”. While Infosys has had the clause for a long time, the union claimed that the company is now enforcing it and that it has received 65-70 complaints from employees. The non-compete clause bars employees from accepting offers from any of the named rival companies for a period of six months after leaving Infosys, if the new job involves working with a client with whom the employee had worked during the last 12 months of their stint with Infosys. For the said duration, the employee also cannot accept a job offer from any customer with whom they had worked in the 12 months immediately preceding the termination of their employment with Infosys. According to reports, Infosys has named five competitors including TCS, Accenture, IBM, Cognizant, and Wipro for IT services employees and nine companies including Tech Mahindra, Genpact, WNS, TCS, Accenture, IBM, Cognizant, Wipro and HCL for business processing management (BPM) staff. Non-compete clauses are not valid in India as per Section 27 of the Indian Contract Act, which states that any agreement that restrains anyone from practising a lawful profession, trade or business is to that extent void. The courts have time and again trashed such clauses and held that post-termination non-compete clauses are not enforceable. Infosys, on its part, said that it is a “standard business practice” for employment contracts to include “controls of reasonable scope and duration to protect the confidentiality of information, customer connection and other legitimate business interests” It denied that the clause prevents employees from joining other organizations. The attrition rate at Infosys touched a record high of 27.7% in the March quarter on a last twelve months basis. In FY22, Infosys hired around 85,000 freshers and has planned a fresher intake of more than 50,000 in the current fiscal. As of March 31, Infosys had 3.14 lakh total employees, while TCS had 5.92 lakh people on its rolls. Most IT firms are jostling to hire employees and retain existing ones in a tight job market. Employees have previously opposed the long 90-day notice period standard in India's IT industry. Invocation of the controversial non-compete clause despite its legal validity being under question can bring down employee morale, restrict the movement of labour between companies and dent the growth prospects of employees. After all, there are only so many large employers in the IT services and BPM sectors and most employees tend to switch between this limited set of companies.
